#185 The Marketing of Aging & What Makes A Wellness Trend Investable?
2026/10/21
It's time for another special episode with Adrienne, Oli, and Sammi will be opening up the DMs and answering your questions! Send in your questions to @modernwellnesspodcast or email [email protected]. Today we have two great questions from the listeners. Up first, we’re looking at trends, and understanding how businesses should approach new frontiers and ideas. And secondly, women are given all sorts of information about aging - whether they’ve asked for it or not - so what part of the algorithm should we be paying attention to? Don't forget to rate/review and subscribe or follow! You can follow Adrienne @adrienne_ldn, Sammi @sammiadhami, and Oli @_olipatrick Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
#184 Doom Spending, Russian Plague Fears & Brain Measuring Wearables
2026/10/19
We’re back with another week of headlines and the latest in the wellness industry. We start with the news that the death of a 28-year-old lab technician, Darya Shipilova, at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia has sparked international concern over a potential pneumonic plague exposure. The facts of the story remain unclear, but as flu season is approaching - should we be taking better precautions? And more generally, there's a wider conversation about our exposure to news, and how that can affect our daily lives. Next up, we dive in to Lightberg Magazine’s article Your Next Wearable Might Read Your Brain. This is the news that after years of tracking our steps, our sleep, and our heart rate, wellness technology is moving into cognitive health. Consumer wearable devices can now measure brain activity through everyday form factors like behind-the-ear pucks, headbands, earbuds, and headphones. There’s various ways they work, EEG (Electroencephalogram) is one example, which reads fast electrical rhythms from the brain using tiny sensors woven into fabric or plastic pads. fNIRS (Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) tracks blood oxygen levels in the frontal cortex to measure mental effort. The devices aren’t necessarily sexy or cool yet, but this feels like the next frontier in wellness, wearables, and brain health. And lastly, are you a Doom Spender? In trending we look at the rise of the act of spending money on short-term, instant enjoyment, rather than saving it, to cope with economic stress and worries, and general pessimism about the future. It’s a worrying trend, but can certainly be understood - the question is who does the best out of it? And subsequently, does the wellness industry benefit from it? Hosted on Acast. #183 From Gym-Goer to Wellness Consumer: Trends, Data & Industry Predictions with Wellhub
2026/10/14
Today we're joined by Eamon Lloyd, VP of Partnerships at Wellhub, to unpack the findings from Wellhub's Fitness Business Growth Report 2026. We explore the shift from the traditional gym-goer to the holistic wellness consumer, how operators like Third Space, David Lloyd, and 1Rebel are evolving their propositions without losing their brand identity, and the growing role of AI in the fitness industry; from marketing content to deeper business analytics and churn reduction. We also discuss how Wellhub bridges the gap between employers and gym operators, making corporate wellness accessible to studios of all sizes — with more than 90% of the users Wellhub sends to their partners being incremental to that facility. Finally, Eamon shares his three trends to watch heading into 2027: AI adoption, flexible membership pricing, and the rising importance of corporate wellbeing as a business strategy. Hosted on Acast. #182 Dyson’s £420 Toothbrush, GLP-1 Pills & The Booming Business of Hair Loss
2026/10/12
First we start with the news that Dyson has launched a £420 toothbrush that films ‘live cleaning footage’ inside your mouth. The toothbrush will clean, floss and even spray tiny jets of mouthwash, but it’s an eye-watering amount of money for a mouth-watering piece of kit. What do the team reckon? Read more here. Next up, the UK has become the first country in Europe to approve oral GLP-1s, and are currently available via private prescription through UK pharmacies and online providers. NHS funding is still pending evaluation and cost-effectiveness review by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Good news for people that need them, but is it becoming too easy to obtain them? And what is the implication of that on the wider world, in the social media age? And in Trending, Adrienne discusses the hair loss business - it seems to be growing and growing, both for men and women. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
#181 Listener Q&A: Scientific Proof vs Anecdotal Evidence & What Wellness Trends Won’t Last The Next 10 Years?
2026/10/07
It's time for another special episode with Adrienne, Oli, and Sammi will be opening up the DMs and answering your questions! Send in your questions to @modernwellnesspodcast or email [email protected]. This week, we’re looking at a great couple of questions. Up first; if a wellness trend makes us feel better, but scientifically doesn’t have any proof, how should we weigh that up? And secondly, let’s look to ten years in the future, what wellness trends won’t last the test of time? Looking at you collagen… Don't forget to rate/review and subscribe or follow! #180 Apple Watch Series 12, Hotel Wellness & What Even Is Intrinsic Capacity?
2026/10/05
The Future Hospitality Summit in Dubai revealed that hotels with major wellness offerings generated more than double the revenue per available room compared to those without. The team breaks down what separates the destinations doing wellness well from those just buying gadgets and hoping for the best. Up next, Apple is coming in strong with its latest wearable announcement. Moving beyond activity tracking, the tech giant announced new Health and Apple Watch features as it takes on a new generation of wearables prioritising actionable insights. They’re adding readiness score, more frequent heart rate readings, and HRV scores while leaving out active blood pressure, for now. Read more at the brilliant Fitt Insider. https://insider.fitt.co/apple-adds-lab-testing-readiness-score-health-updates/ And lastly in trending, we’re looking at Intrinsic Capacity - the WHO's function-based framework for healthy aging is entering the wellness chat. #179 Hypertension, Wearables and Longevity: How Blood Pressure Monitoring Could Save Millions with Hilo's Josep Solà
2026/09/30
Today we tackle the world's biggest silent killer, hypertension, and explore how 22 years of research is transforming blood pressure monitoring from an occasional cuff squeeze into continuous, wearable insight. Sammi heads to Lausanne, Switzerland to sit down with Josep Solà, co-founder and CTO of Aktiia, the company behind Hilo, the world's first cuffless blood pressure monitoring bracelet. Josep shares the personal family story that sparked his journey and explains why hypertension is called the silent killer; responsible for 10 million deaths annually, with nearly half of those affected completely unaware. He breaks down the limitations of traditional cuff-based monitoring, from the white coat effect to patient non-compliance, and reveals the optical sensor technology and AI models that power Hilo's continuous, cuffless readings. Going deep on the science, they discuss the 22 years of research, 100+ scientific papers and 14 patents behind the technology, how the device captures up to 800 readings per month, and the striking data showing that app engagement directly correlates with blood pressure reduction. Josep explains where Hilo sits at the intersection of MedTech, wearables and longevity, how consumer demand is driving clinical adoption, and the company's recent US launch and NHS pilot ambitions. Plus there's a look at what's next for Hilo; from screening tools for the masses to Joseph's dream of a global reduction in hypertension-related deaths by 2050. Hosted on Acast. #178 Nike Shares Fall, Flu Camp & Are You Prepped for a National Emergency?
2026/09/28
Welcome back! It’s September, it’s time to lock in for the last part of the year, and so naturally Adrienne, Oli & Sammi are back for a new season of the Modern Wellness Podcast… Season 8! But the good news stops there. We start the series looking at the latest government announcements, advising the nation to get prepped for an emergency. How would you prepare for an emergency? How would you cope? And what about your relatives, friends, neighbours and colleagues? These are the questions the government wants people to ask themselves, as emergency planners warn of growing threats from heatwaves and flooding, as well as potential cyber attacks by hostile states that could cripple vital energy infrastructure. And from a wellness perspective - how much have you thought about this? Are you stocked up? Have you tried a trial run? And do you have a well? Next up, we look at the dramatic financial news that Nike exited the S&P 100 Index on September 21, 2026, ending an 18-year run due to a dramatic drop in market capitalisation. But what really has happened to get the company to this stage? What does thew market look like now? And what should Nike do next? And finally, in trending we’re talking about Flu Camp. Getting paid (thousands of pounds) to take time off work sure sounds good, and ten days alone was certainly tempting during the school holidays but what do our hosts make of it? Hosted on Acast. #176 Tap Water Safety, Wellness Dating & How Much Tinned Fish Are You Buying?
2026/07/20
It’s the last Monday episode of the series before we break for the summer! First up... would you go for a run on a date? The rise of the “wellness date” reflects a deeper redefinition of modern romance. As dating app fatigue sets in, an entire generation is craving more honest interactions—and a shared breathwork class, a yoga session, or a guided meditation for two often reveals far more than an hour of polite conversation over drinks. Next up… tap water. It’s a controversial topic in the wellness industry. Are you happy to plug straight from the tap or are you firmly filtered? The team dig in to the stats to uncover what really is going on, and should we really be worried about how much water we’re drinking rather than the quality of the water itself? Read the fantastic article in Stylist here: https://www.stylist.co.uk/fitness-health/nutrition/are-water-filters-a-health-con/1096743 And in Trending, Adrienne is looking at tinned fish. Whilst we covered the Sardine Diet earlier in the series, and did not advise that level of fish consumption, as a part of a balanced diet the stats really do not lie. There’s no denying the vibe for tinned fish has changed from world war rations to east London hipster, but will you be cracking open a can yourself? Hosted on Acast. #173 Navigating the Science of Gut Health Testing: Dr. Megan Rossi in conversation with Adrienne Adhami - REPLAY
2026/07/08
With our focus on the Oral Microbiome in this week's episode, we thought for our Wednesday bonus we'd look back to our episode with Dr Megan Rossi, queen of the Gut Microbiome where she joined Adrienne to discuss the current state of gut health testing and its potential, explaining the nuances and limitations of commercial gut health tests. Dr Megan Rossi (PhD, RD) founded The Gut Health Doctor in 2017 with a dream to empower everyone to take control of their health. As a scientist and practising clinician, she became frustrated that the ground-breaking research from her team and other colleagues around the world wasn’t reaching the public. Instead, dangerous myths and fads shared online were negatively impacting on the wellbeing of her patients. Her new business Smart Strains aims to revolutionise how people understand and use live bacterial supplements. Through this game-changing range, she is empowering everyone to care for themselves and their families, providing the right strain, at the right time, in the right way – and only when you need it. With an award-winning PhD in probiotics and a family of products that use only the strains backed by international health bodies, Dr Megan Rossi is bringing credibility and clarity back to live bacterial supplements. Then we turn to gains. The explosive “protein-maxxing” consumer trend and massive demand from GLP-1 weight-loss users has caused a severe global whey protein shortage. And lastly, in Trending, Adrienne is discussing our Oral Hygiene.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

2026/07/01
Today Adrienne is joined by Dr Mohammed Enayat, a London-trained GP and founder of HUM2N, a physician-led longevity and personalised medicine clinic, to discuss his shift from reactive, organ-based healthcare toward functional “root cause” and longevity/precision medicine using richer diagnostics. They explore how wellness has become mainstream, what people really mean by “longevity”, and how HUM2N integrates traditional care with functional medicine, advanced therapies, and specialist networks. The conversation covers peptides (licensed options like GLP-1s versus unlicensed, unregulated products) emphasising risks, self-dosing concerns, and the need for physician oversight, screening, and ongoing biomarker monitoring. They also discuss the future of luxury wellness and hospitality moving toward safer, medically guided programmes with diagnostics and follow-up, plus accessible daily habits like cardio and strength training, chewing food, hydration, and timing meals.
