I Finally Played Crystalis… And Now I Get It!
How did I go this long without playing Crystalis on the NES?
Released in 1990, Crystalis is an action RPG that has built a loyal following among retro gamers. But does it really deserve to be mentioned alongside some of the best games on the Nintendo Entertainment System?
After finally completing my very first playthrough, I'm sitting down with a guest to talk about everything Crystalis has to offer. From its surprisingly ambitious world and exploration to its combat, magic system, dungeons, and occasional frustrations, we're breaking down what makes this game so memorable more than 35 years later.
We discuss the things Crystalis does incredibly well, some of its more confusing design choices, how it compares to other classic NES adventures, and whether it still holds up for someone experiencing it for the first time in 2026.
Was Crystalis ahead of its time? Is it one of the most underrated RPGs on the NES? And most importantly, was it worth waiting all these years to finally play?
Grab a controller, settle in, and join us for another retro gaming conversation on The Overwhelmed Gamer Podcast!

Is November Big Enough for Zelda AND GTA 6?
2026/10/12
Is November Big Enough for Zelda AND GTA 6?Two legendary gaming franchises. Two very different generations of gamers. And potentially one very crowded November!
In this episode of The Overwhelmed Gamer Podcast, we're talking about the possibility of a new release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arriving in the same month as Grand Theft Auto VI.
On one side, you've got Ocarina of Time, a game that helped define 3D gaming and remains one of the most beloved adventures ever made. On the other, GTA 6, one of the most anticipated games in modern gaming history.
But can both games find success releasing so close together? Are they even competing for the same audience?
We get into the nostalgia surrounding Ocarina of Time, the massive expectations for GTA 6, how gaming has changed since the Nintendo 64 era, and whether two very different games can both dominate the conversation.
In this episode, we discuss:
Why Ocarina of Time remains so influential. The expectations surrounding GTA 6.Whether nostalgia can compete with modern blockbuster gaming. How different generations approach these two franchises.Whether releasing in the same month could help or hurt either game.Which game we'd be more excited to play!We want to hear from you!
If both games were available in November, which would you be playing first? Would you revisit Hyrule or head straight into Vice City?

I Just Want to Play: When Games Became Too Complicated
2026/10/02
Sometimes… I just want to play.
Video games have come a long way, but somewhere along the way, did playing them become a little too complicated?
In this episode of The Overwhelmed Gamer Podcast, I’m talking about the difference between jumping into an older game and immediately getting started versus modern games filled with tutorials, crafting systems, inventories, skill trees, upgrade materials, daily objectives, menus, and seemingly endless things to keep track of.
That doesn’t mean modern games are bad — far from it. Some of my favorite gaming experiences come from newer games. But after returning to gaming following a long break, I’ve started to appreciate just how refreshing it can be when a game simply hands you the controller and says, “Go play.”
So where’s the sweet spot? When does depth make a game better, and when does it start getting in the way of actually enjoying it?
🎮 Do you prefer the simplicity of older games, or do you love all the systems found in modern games? Let me know what you think!
