Why you understand English but struggle to speak
2026/09/23
Send me a text!
Welcome to The English Education Lab Podcast—where we explore smarter ways to learn, build confidence, and use real English for real conversations, one step at a time!
In today’s episode, we’re talking about one of the most frustrating experiences for English learners: understanding English really well but still struggling to speak it.
Maybe you can watch a movie in English and understand most of what’s happening. Maybe you can listen to a podcast, read an article, recognize vocabulary, and understand grammar. And yet, when someone asks you a simple question, your mind suddenly goes blank!
You know English. You understand English. So why can’t you always speak it?
The answer may have much less to do with how much English you know—and much more to do with how quickly you can retrieve and use the English you already know.
In this episode, we’ll explore the important difference between understanding language and producing language, and why speaking requires your brain to do so much more work. We’ll look at the difference between declarative knowledge (knowing the rules) and procedural knowledge (being able to use them automatically), and why knowing a grammar rule doesn’t necessarily mean you can use it fluently in a real conversation.
We’ll also talk about the difference between passive and active vocabulary—and why recognizing hundreds of English words doesn’t automatically mean those words will be available when you need them.
Most importantly, I’ll share four practical ways you can start turning the English you already know into English you can actually use: practising retrieval, repeating speaking tasks, learning language in chunks, and—perhaps most importantly—stopping the habit of waiting until you feel “ready” to speak!
Because speaking isn’t simply the final result of learning English. Speaking is part of learning English. And the more you practise retrieving, repeating, and using language meaningfully, the more automatic it can become.
So if you’ve ever thought, “But I understand English! Why can’t I speak it?”—this episode is for you.
Grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let’s take a closer look at what’s really happening when your English seems to disappear the moment you open your mouth—and what you can do to turn the English in your head into the English you can actually use.
Because sometimes the next step in your English journey isn’t learning more information. It’s learning how to access and use what you already know!

The hidden rules of English communication
2026/08/20
Send me a text!
Welcome to The English Education Lab Podcast—where we explore smarter ways to learn, build confidence, and use real English for real conversations, one step at a time!
In today’s episode, we’re talking about something that many English learners don’t realize they are learning: the hidden rules of English conversation!
You might know the grammar. You might have a good vocabulary. You might even understand almost everything someone says to you. And yet, sometimes a conversation in English can still feel… a little awkward.
Maybe you’re not sure when it’s your turn to speak. Maybe someone interrupts you and you’re not sure whether they’re being rude. Or maybe there’s a moment of silence and suddenly you feel like you need to say something.
The thing is, conversations aren’t just about words. They’re also about rhythm, signals, timing, and expectations—many of which native speakers pick up naturally without ever being explicitly taught them.
In this episode, we’ll explore some of these unwritten rules, including how to know when to speak, how to interrupt politely, how to show interest, and the small phrases and sounds we use to show that we’re actively listening.
We’ll also talk about something that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable for English learners: silence. Because the way we interpret silence can be very different depending on our cultural background.
Most importantly, we’ll look at why there isn’t one single “correct” way to have a conversation. These rules can vary between cultures, generations, and even individuals. What really matters is becoming more aware of them and learning how to adapt.
So grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let’s take a closer look at the hidden side of English conversation—and the little things that can help you feel more natural, confident, and connected when you speak.

Why you freeze when someone speaks English to you
2026/04/02
Send me a text!
Welcome to The English Education Lab Podcast—where we explore smarter ways to learn, build confidence, and use real English for real conversations, one step at a time!
In today’s episode, we’re diving into something that almost every English learner has experienced: why you suddenly freeze when someone speaks to you in English.
You know the moment. You’ve studied. You’ve practised. You know the words. But then someone starts talking to you—and your mind goes completely blank. Panic sets in, your heart races, and the sentence you wanted to say just… disappears.
In this episode, we explore why this happens—not because your English isn’t good enough, but because your brain is reacting in a very natural way to pressure, speed, and real-time communication. We’ll look at what’s really going on in those moments, from processing overload to performance anxiety.
More importantly, I’ll share practical, simple strategies to help you stay calm, think clearly, and respond with confidence—even when you feel put on the spot. You’ll learn how to slow conversations down, use “thinking time” phrases, and train your brain to stay present instead of panicking.
Because the goal isn’t perfect English—it’s confident communication!
So grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and let’s help you move from freezing… to flowing in English conversations.

How to turn passive vocabulary into power words!

Send me a text!
Welcome to The English Education Lab Podcast—where we explore smarter ways to learn, gain confidence, and use real English for real conversations, one step at a time.
In today’s episode, we’re tackling something that even advanced English learners struggle with: how to turn your passive vocabulary into powerful, active words you can actually use in conversation.
You know the feeling. You recognize a word instantly when you read it. You understand it perfectly when somebody else uses it. But when it’s your turn to speak? That word suddenly disappears. It’s somewhere in your brain… just not available when you need it most!
In this episode, we explore why this happens—including the science behind the forgetting curve (yes, up to 70% can disappear without review!)—and what you can do to stop it. We’ll look at spaced repetition, the testing effect, memory hacks, creative associations, and simple strategies that help move vocabulary from recognition to confident use.
Most importantly, I’ll show you how to activate those “garage tools” in your brain—through conversation, role-play, teaching, and even a little humor—so your words don’t just sit there… they show up when you need them.
No cramming. No boring memorization. Just practical, science-backed techniques you can start using immediately.
So grab your cup of coffee, head out for a walk if you like, and let’s turn your vocabulary into something powerful, confident… and completely yours!

How to discuss sensitive topics in English with confidence

Send me a text!
Welcome to The English Education Lab Podcast—where we explore smarter ways to learn, gain confidence, and use real English for real conversations, one step at a time.
In today’s episode, we’re diving into a topic many English learners find especially challenging: how to discuss sensitive topics in English without sounding rude, aggressive, or unsure.
Even if you speak English fluently, you may have noticed that what sounds perfectly normal in your own language—or even in one English-speaking country—can sound too blunt, awkward, or uncomfortable in another. This can create stress, hesitation, or those “oh no, did that sound rude?” moments we all want to avoid.
In this episode, we’ll look at why sensitive topics feel harder in English, how cultural differences play a role, and—most importantly—how you can soften your language, disagree politely, ask better questions, and sound calm and confident, even in difficult conversations at work or in international settings.
I’ll share practical examples, useful phrases, and simple strategies you can start using straight away—no scripts, no textbook language, just English that actually works in real life.
So grab your cup of coffee, go for a walk if you like, and let’s get started, my friends!
