Why you get bored right after you finally get good at your job
2026/10/22
You worked hard to get good at this job. Now you can do the quarterly report in your sleep, the pay is fine, and everybody says must be nice. So why are you so restless? In this episode, I'm talking through what boredom research says about work that got too easy and work that stopped meaning anything to you, why boredom at a decent job is so easy to brush off, and the honeymoon-hangover effect that makes every new job feel exciting for a while. I'll also talk about deep generalists, and what the stuff you reach for when you're bored can tell you about where you'd rather be. You'll get a simple test for telling which kind of bored you've got and a way to make your current job hard again before you leave it. If it turns out you do need to go, I'll walk you through what to look for in the next role so you don't end up right back here in two years. Newness wears off at every job, so pick the one that keeps you learning. Got something to say? Text me! Why leaving a job feels like leaving your people
2026/10/08
Why does leaving a job feel like leaving your people? Your team knows your coffee order, and the group chat has jokes nobody else would get. For a lot of us, work has become the main place we feel like we belong, and that makes a draining job a whole lot harder to leave. In this episode, I'm talking about the need to belong, what the Surgeon General's 2023 loneliness advisory says about how much connection has shrunk outside of work, why managers hand more unpaid work to the employees they see as loyal, and why layoffs hit so hard when your people and your paycheck live in the same place. You'll also get a simple belonging map to see how much of your belonging runs through your job, plus one small experiment to start building some that doesn't need a login. If you decide to stay, stay because the work and the place still fit. Got something to say? Text me! Bringing Sexy Back to Employee Benefits with Gayle Martin
2026/09/24
Employee benefits are supposed to support you, but that promise falls apart when nobody explains what you have or how to use it. In this episode, I’m talking with Gayle Martin, founder of TrueNorth Benefits Strategy, who spent 27 years in group benefits before leaving corporate leadership and building a people-first consulting practice. We talk about why benefits alone won’t keep employees, how culture and communication determine whether a plan helps anyone, and what to look for when you’re burned out and need to understand your options. Gayle also shares what her own burnout taught her about freedom, strengths, and choosing work that feels right. By the end, you’ll know why your benefits booklet deserves more than a once-a-year glance and what to ask before you need support. Find Gayle at TrueNorthStrategy.ca and on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/gayle-martin/). If this conversation helps you, send it to one person who needs to dig out their benefits booklet too. Why You Stay in a Job You Know Isn't Working
2026/09/10
Why do you stay in a job you already know isn’t working? Staying comes with a paycheck, benefits, a routine, and problems you already understand. Leaving comes with questions your brain can’t answer yet. That difference can make a draining job feel safer than an uncertain next move. In this episode, I’m talking through status quo bias, loss aversion, sunk cost, and the identity wrapped up in your work. You’ll learn why burnout makes career decisions harder, how familiarity starts making the choice for you, and how to compare what leaving could cost with what staying is already costing you. You’ll also get a practical exercise to identify the risk keeping you stuck and reduce it without blowing up your life by Friday. Staying can be a real strategy. Knowing how to survive the job isn’t enough to make it safe. Got something to say? Text me! Starting Over without Starting from Scratch with Kelly Wuest
2026/08/13
What happens when the career you thought you wanted starts costing too much of yourself? In this episode, I’m joined by Kelly Wuest, founder of Kelly Wuest Consulting and one of my closest grad school friends, for a conversation about burnout, career pivots, transferable skills, and building work that actually fits your life. Kelly shares how she moved from higher ed to nonprofit work, then from nonprofit leadership into entrepreneurship. We talk about the identity hit that comes with leaving a field you thought would be your forever home, why your skills transfer more than you think, and what it really takes to start over without starting from scratch. We also get into why so many organizations treat training like a checkbox, what quality learning and development actually requires, and how running your own business changes your relationship with time, work, and balance. If you’ve been wondering whether it’s time to make a move, this conversation will give you language, perspective, and a little proof that a big pivot doesn’t have to mean blowing up your whole life. The Fuel Problem Behind Career Paralysis
2026/07/30
You sit down to figure out your next move and nothing comes. Your brain is doing exactly what years of chronic stress trained it to do: protect today at the expense of tomorrow.  In this episode, I break down the real neuroscience behind career paralysis, why brainstorming your way out usually backfires, and the actual order of operations for getting unstuck. You'll hear what a Stanford study on stress and planning reveals about your blank pages, why chasing a five-year vision right now sets you up to fail, and the low-fuel method I walk clients through when they can't picture a single next step. Plus the four doors out of a job most people forget exist, because they're only staring at the scariest one.  This is about the mechanism behind the fog and a concrete way through it. If you've decided something is wrong with your ambition, this one's for you.  Got something to say? Text me! The Thing You Want Is Behind What You Resist with LauraAura
2026/07/16
Feeling stuck in a job that’s draining you but too scared to make a change that looks crazy on paper? This one’s for you.  I sat down with LauraAura, keynote speaker, coach, and host of The Gutsy Podcast, to talk about what it actually takes to make a bold move when you’re burned out and second-guessing everything.  We get into why the thing you want most is usually hiding behind the thing you resist most, why you shouldn’t make big decisions from a place of exhaustion, and how small moves build the momentum you need to change direction. Laura also shares the gutsiest move of her own career, selling the branding agency she ran for years to go all in on speaking and coaching.  If you keep talking yourself out of what you want, this conversation will help you spot what’s really holding you back and figure out your next step.  Resources:  Follow LauraAura at lauraaura.comListen to The Gutsy Podcast (lauraaura.com/the-gutsy-podcast/)Connect with me at tarakermiet.com Got something to say? The 5 Burnout Patterns I Hear Most as a Coach
2026/07/02
Six months into the season, I stopped to count what I was actually hearing. Across dozens of 1:1s, different jobs, different cities, different titles, the same five patterns kept walking in the door. So this is the episode where I name them, in the order they tend to happen to a person. We start with the work, the kind that has no off switch. Then the person above you, and the Gallup finding that 70% of whether a team thrives or burns out comes down to one manager. Then the quiet turn where you stop blaming the situation and start blaming yourself. Then the bottom, where the job stops being something you do and becomes something you are. And finally the turn, the part I didn't want to end without, because six months in I've watched it happen for real. Underneath all five is the framework I use to map this stuff with clients, the five Cs: Conditions, Culture, Convictions, Capacity, and Choices. I'll show you how each pattern is really one of them in disguise, and I've backed every section with the research, from the WHO's definition of burnout to what actually helps people climb out. How Misaligned Habits Affect Your Wellness with Courtney Townley
2026/06/18
This week I'm joined by Courtney Townley, a health and self-leadership coach and author of The Consistency Code. We get into integrity pain, that nagging discomfort when your daily choices don't match what you actually want for your life, why willpower isn't the fix, and the four practices behind her Consistency Code: awareness, organization, follow through, and realignment. If you've ever set a goal, fallen off, and then beaten yourself up about it, this one's for you. Falling out of alignment is a given. How fast you get back is what actually matters. Slinging Burnout Advice Without A Diagnosis
2026/06/04
I'm a burnout coach, and I'm about to tell you why most burnout advice doesn't work. Including some of mine. I'm unpacking the reframe that has changed how I work with every single client. The advice is not failing. The advice is answering a question that is not your question. I'll walk you through the 5 Cs (Conditions, Culture, Convictions, Choices, and Capacity), the five drivers of burnout, and show you why most popular burnout advice is built around one of them and fails the other four. By the end of the episode I tell you the one piece of advice I had to retire from my own practice, and why I think it has done more harm than good for a lot of people. Values-Based Recovery vs. the Burnout Hustle with Lisa Shubin
2026/05/21
What happens when the wellness coach burns out? Lisa Shubin knows. She built a career helping people inside corporate and healthcare systems take care of themselves, then had to figure out how to take her own advice. In this episode, we talk about the gap between how organizations talk about wellness and how work actually gets done, the signals your body sends before a breakdown, and how her Ignite framework helps people build sustainable recovery rooted in values instead of hustle. I’ve been looking forward to this one because Lisa is someone I’ve had the chance to work with through coaching, and her perspective on burnout is shaped by real experience on both sides. This one’s full of honest, practical wisdom. The Real Reason You Keep Almost Quitting But Never Do
2026/05/07
There's a reason you keep almost quitting but never do, and it has nothing to do with motivation.  In this episode, I apply Kurt Lewin's three-stage Change Model to career change during burnout. You'll learn why unfreezing is harder than the actual move, what job search paralysis really is, and the stage most people skip that sends them straight back into the same burnout with a different logo on the door.  Resources mentioned: Career Reboot Strategy Session (https://stan.store/tarakermiet/p/career-reboot)Career Pivot Playbook (https://stan.store/tarakermiet/p/career-pivot-playbook)Got something to say? No, Women Didn’t Ruin the Workplace with Alison Campbell
2026/04/16
A 2025 New York Times piece asked whether women have "ruined the workplace," blaming flexibility and empathy for what's broken. Alison Campbell, founder of unBurnt® and former Chief of Staff turned leadership researcher, joins me to set the record straight. We talk burnout, workplace design, working motherhood, and what her new research with Bentley University is uncovering about how people actually feel at work right now. This is an honest conversation about who's really responsible for burnout, and it's not the people asking for flexibility. Why Being the Chief Everything Officer is Killing Your Career with Alli Murphy
2026/04/02
In this episode, we sit down with Alli, founder of Work and Thrive HQ, to talk about how you can get trapped in the Chief Everything Officer role where you’re being the default for everything, saying yes by default, stepping in because it’s faster, and staying constantly available until you burn out. Alli shares how she hit that point as a young director during COVID, working nonstop and realizing she needed outside coaching to change. We break down why “always being on” is one of the sneakiest parts of the loop, how it can feel like good leaders, and how it keeps your nervous system and your team stuck. You’ll also hear practical ways to untangle your identity from work, including a “superpowers” outreach exercise, a joy-and-energy audit, and modeling boundaries and self-care openly so you can lead strategically and still have a life. Know Who You Are Before Deciding What You Do with Elizabeth Galbreath
2026/03/19
Most of us built our careers around answers we gave before we really knew ourselves. Elizabeth has a front-row seat to how that plays out. She's an HR pro and founder of Cultivate Growth Co., who works with early career professionals every day. In this conversation, we get into the expectations gap between what young people think work will look like and what it actually demands, why knowing who you are matters more than knowing what you want to do, and the reflection practice Elizabeth uses to help people stop measuring their worth by what other people hand them. We also get into what leaders are getting wrong when it comes to really knowing their people. Leaving your door open doesn't count.
