The Mystery of the Sleepers of Ephesus
2026/10/22
What if you fell asleep and woke to discover that generations had passed? According to Christian tradition, a group of young believers sought refuge in a cave near Ephesus during Roman persecution, only to awaken centuries later in a transformed world. Their story spread across languages and faiths, becoming closely associated with the Qur'an's Companions of the Cave. In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we explore the historical setting, the earliest surviving accounts and the archaeological evidence behind a legend that has fascinated audiences for centuries.

The Mystery of the Men in Black
2026/10/15
A strange object appears in the sky. Then comes a knock at the door, a visitor in a dark suit, and a warning to forget what you have seen. For decades, stories of the Men in Black have haunted UFO folklore, but where did they begin, and how much evidence supports them? This episode of Compact Mysteries follows the legend from the disputed Maury Island incident and Albert Bender's abrupt withdrawal from UFO research to fabricated accounts, unsettling reports and Hollywood reinvention. Along the way, we explore how secrecy, suspicion and storytelling turned mysterious visitors into enduring cultural icons.

In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we follow the story of numbers stations, from wartime coded messages and the shadowy airwaves of the Cold War to the espionage cases that revealed real spies behind the signals. What do we know about these broadcasts, and which secrets remain hidden in the static?

The Mystery of the San Pedro Mountains Mummy
2026/09/24
In the 1930s, two gold prospectors reportedly blasted into a small chamber in Wyoming's San Pedro Mountains and discovered a tiny mummified body seated on a ledge. Measuring only a few inches tall, the strange figure soon became known as Pedro and was promoted as an elderly member of a lost race of little people. Newspaper reports connected it with Indigenous traditions of the Nimerigar, while sensational claims about adult teeth, mysterious stomach contents and a violent death spread across America. Scientists offered a far more convincing explanation, but before modern testing could settle every question, the mummy disappeared. In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we follow Pedro from a poorly documented cave discovery and travelling curiosity to the medical examinations that identified the body as an infant with anencephaly. We also examine the later discovery of a similar mummy called Chiquita and ask what remains genuinely unexplained about one of Wyoming's strangest archaeological stories.

The Mystery of the Sea People
2026/09/17
At the end of the Bronze Age, cities burned, kingdoms disappeared and mysterious groups moved through the eastern Mediterranean. Egyptian inscriptions called them the Peleset, Sherden, Denyen and other names, but today they are collectively known as the Sea Peoples. Were they raiders, refugees, mercenaries or displaced warriors returning from conflicts such as the Trojan War? This episode examines the inscriptions of Egypt, the final letters from Ugarit, the destruction of the Bronze Age kingdoms and the discoveries made through climate research, archaeology and ancient DNA.

The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles
2026/09/10
For decades, cryptic handmade tiles have appeared embedded in roads across the United States and South America. Their message links Arnold J. Toynbee, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and a plan to resurrect the dead on Jupiter. We follow the trail from the first Philadelphia sightings to strange radio broadcasts, ingenious installation methods and the reclusive man suspected of creating them. Did investigators finally identify the Toynbee tiler, or does the most important piece of evidence remain buried beneath the traffic?

The Mystery of the Marfa Lights
2026/08/13
For generations, strange lights have been reported above the desert near Marfa, Texas. Witnesses describe glowing orbs that move, change colour, divide and disappear over Mitchell Flat. This episode examines the earliest recorded sightings, the difficulties of identifying distant lights and the scientific investigations that connected many observations to vehicle headlights and atmospheric refraction. Can every Marfa Light be explained, or does a small group of unusual cases remain unresolved?

The Mystery of Bigfoot
2026/08/06
For generations, people across North America have reported encounters with an enormous, hair-covered figure roaming remote forests. In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we trace the story of Bigfoot from Indigenous traditions and early wild-man reports to the Bluff Creek footprints and the famous Patterson-Gimlin film. We examine eyewitness testimony, footprint casts, hair samples and alleged recordings, along with the hoaxes, misidentifications and scientific studies that challenge them. Could an undiscovered primate really remain hidden across North America, or has Bigfoot become one of the world's most enduring modern legends?

The Mystery of the Sailing Stones of Death Valley
2026/07/30
Across the cracked surface of Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, heavy stones have travelled hundreds of metres, leaving long trails through the desert mud. For decades, nobody witnessed them move. Were they driven by powerful winds, floating ice or some force researchers had overlooked? This episode of Compact Mysteries follows the investigation from the first recorded tracks to the experiment that finally captured the sailing stones in motion.

The Mystery of Tarrare
2026/07/23
In eighteenth-century France, a young man named Tarrare became notorious for an appetite that appeared to have no limit. Despite remaining remarkably thin, he could consume meals intended for entire groups, swallow objects and reportedly eat live animals. After performing on the streets of Paris, he joined the French Revolutionary Army, where military doctors began studying his extraordinary condition.
But Tarrare's story soon became darker. The army attempted to use him as a secret courier, experimental treatments failed, and the disappearance of a young child resulted in a horrifying—but unproven—accusation. In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we examine the historical evidence, the disturbing medical reports and the theories that might explain one of medicine's strangest unsolved cases.

The Mystery of Göbekli Tepe
2026/07/16
Göbekli Tepe is one of the most astonishing archaeological discoveries of the modern age. Built in south-eastern Turkey more than 11,000 years ago, its carved T-shaped pillars, animal reliefs, and mysterious enclosures appear long before cities, writing, or metal tools. Was it a temple, a gathering place, a settlement, or something we still do not fully understand? In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we explore the hill that changed how archaeologists think about the origins of civilisation.

The Rendlesham Forest UFO Mystery
2026/06/25
In this episode of Compact Mysteries, we explore The Rendlesham Forest UFO Mystery, the strange 1980 incident near RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters in Suffolk. Often called Britain's Roswell, the case involved American servicemen, unexplained lights, alleged ground traces, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt's famous memo and tape, and decades of argument over what really happened in the forest. Was it a genuine unknown event, a mix of lighthouse beams, stars and Cold War nerves, or something stranger still?
