Gin Blossoms - "New Miserable Experience" - the tragic story behind the sunny songs
2026/10/25
Gin Blossoms – New Miserable Experience: the tragedy behind the sunny songs
What happens when a band makes one of the best alternative-rock albums of the ’90s—and fires the guy who wrote its biggest hits?
This week on Classic Rocktails, Doc and Mac revisit Gin Blossoms’ 1992 breakthrough, New Miserable Experience. Packed with irresistible hooks, jangly guitars, and heartbreak disguised as happy hour, the album delivered classics like “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You,” and “Until I Fall Away.”
But behind those sunny melodies lies one of rock’s darkest stories: the troubled genius of songwriter Doug Hopkins, whose personal demons and departure from the band cast a long shadow over its success.
We dig into the music, the tragedy, the questionable decisions, and whether this quintessential ’90s album still holds up more than 30 years later.
Plus, a cocktail worthy of the album’s romantic disasters, a few laughs at rock and roll’s expense, and the usual arguments that make Classic Rocktails feel like your favorite bar conversation.
Great melodies. Terrible relationships. One hell of an album.
🎸 Pour yourself something strong and join Doc and Mac!

Pat Benatar – "Crimes of Passion": Hell Is for Children. Rock Stardom Is for Badasses.
2026/10/19
Before there was a Joan Jett anthem or a Madonna revolution, Pat Benatar was kicking down the doors of a rock world dominated by men—and she wasn't asking permission.
This week on Classic Rocktails, Doc and Mac revisit Crimes of Passion, the 1980 blockbuster that gave us “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Treat Me Right,” and the haunting “Hell Is for Children.”
Was Benatar the most important female rocker of her generation? How much credit belongs to guitar wizard Neil Giraldo? And 46 years later, does this album still pack the same punch—or is nostalgia doing some heavy lifting?
We're pouring a New York Sour, debating the highs and lows, and picking a fight over one of rock's most formidable voices.
Two guys. One album. One cocktail. Plenty to argue about.
🎸 Turn it up. Pour one out. Let's Rocktail.

AC/DC - "Back In Black" - Triumph, tragedy, and the balls it took to make this album
2026/10/11
⚡ AC/DC: BACK IN BLACK ⚡
One of the biggest, loudest, most indestructible rock albums ever made.
This week on Classic Rocktails, Doc and Mac dive into AC/DC’s 1980 masterpiece Back in Black — the impossible task of replacing Bon Scott, Brian Johnson’s arrival, Mutt Lange’s massive production, and the riffs that turned tragedy into one of the best-selling albums in history.
We break down the highs, the lows, the stories behind the songs, and ask the only question that really matters:
Does Back in Black still hold up?
Pour something strong, turn it up, and join the bar fight. 🥃⚡

Survivor - "Eye of the Tiger" + "Vital SIgns" - Did Survivor do Survivor dirty?
2026/10/05
Survivor had the songs, the singers, the hooks—and somehow still managed to make their own road to rock history harder than it needed to be.
This week, Doc and Mac dive into the strange, hit-filled story of Survivor: from the monster success of “Eye of the Tiger” to the arrival of Jimi Jamison and the polished perfection of Vital Signs. We get into Dave Bickler vs. Jamison, Jim Peterik’s songwriting machine, the band’s revolving-door lineup, and the baffling decisions that kept Survivor from becoming even bigger.
Was Survivor an underrated great rock band—or just a brilliant singles machine that could never quite get out of its own way?
Plus: the highs, the lows, a Chicago-inspired cocktail, and another round of The Game Mac’s Not Expecting.
🥃 Pour one. Turn it up. And decide for yourself: Did Survivor do Survivor dirty?
Bob Seger - "Stranger In Town" - a Murders Row of Bar Band tunes
2026/09/27
Bob Seger walked into 1978 and casually dropped:
🔥 “Hollywood Nights”
🥃 “Still the Same”
🎹 “We’ve Got Tonite”
🍺 “Old Time Rock and Roll”
That’s not an album side. That’s a barroom murderers’ row.
We’re cracking open Stranger in Town on Classic Rocktails.
Does it still hold up?

Rush - "Moving Pictures" - Did Rush peak with Moving Pictures?
2026/09/21
Rush’s Moving Pictures is one of those albums where technical brilliance and huge rock songs somehow coexist perfectly. Doc and Mac dig into “Tom Sawyer,” “Red Barchetta,” “YYZ,” “Limelight” and the rest of a record that helped bring prog rock into the mainstream without sanding off its weird edges.
They debate whether this is peak Rush, where the album still holds up—and pair it with the Limelight, a bright, sharp absinthe cocktail built for the occasion.
Hit play and join the argument: is Moving Pictures Rush at their absolute best?
Night Ranger - "Midnight Madness" - the perfect 80s album or just Sister Christian?
2026/09/13
Night Ranger’s Midnight Madness is pure 1983: huge guitars, huge hooks, MTV, arcade games, and one power ballad that became impossible to escape.
This week, Doc and Mac go track-by-track through the album that gave us “(You Can Still) Rock in America,” “When You Close Your Eyes,” and, of course, “Sister Christian.” Does Midnight Madness still hold up as one of the great melodic rock albums of the ’80s—or are we letting nostalgia do some of the heavy lifting?
Along the way, we revisit the glory days of ’80s video games, imagine what would happen if rock bands could make player trades, and put Mac through another edition of The Game Mac’s Not Expecting.
Grab a drink, turn it up, and MOTORIN’.
The Doors- ("Self-titled") - Psychedelic? Sexy? Silly?
2026/09/07
🚪 In 1967, The Doors didn’t knock. They kicked the damn thing in.
“The End.” “Break On Through.” “Light My Fire.” One debut album—and rock suddenly got darker, stranger, sexier and more dangerous.
Does The Doors still hold up nearly 60 years later?
🍸 We’re opening the door. You decide.

EMERGENCY EPISODE! NEW TRAIN ALBUM REVIEW
2026/09/02
🚨 EMERGENCY PODCAST! 🚨
We weren’t planning another episode this week—but then Train dropped Mad Dog in the Fog, and we had no choice.
Is this really the band’s best album ever and a full-throttle return to their rock roots? Doc and Mac crack it open, argue it out, and explain why this one demanded an emergency edition of Classic Rocktails.
🎸 Six killer rock songs. A rejuvenated Train. And one VERY strong opinion.
Eddie Money - "Can't Hold Back" - Is Money Rock's Rodney Dangerfield?
2026/08/30
Was Eddie Money underrated… or exactly as big as he deserved to be?
We put Can’t Hold Back on trial, revisit the hits, dig into the deep cuts, and probably start a bar fight along the way. 🍺🔥

Train - "Drops of Jupiter" - Is Train rock or rom-com?
2026/08/17
Train’s Drops of Jupiter might be remembered as a big, glossy early-2000s rock record—but underneath the strings, hooks, and radio polish, is it actually rock… or a rom-com soundtrack waiting to happen?
This week on Classic Rocktails, Doc and Mac revisit Train’s breakthrough album, from the massive title track and “She’s on Fire” to the songs that sound suspiciously perfect for a movie montage involving an airport, a breakup, and someone running through the rain.
We dig into the making of Drops of Jupiter, debate whether Train deserves more respect than rock fans usually give them, and put the album through our most dangerous test yet: ROCK OR ROM-COM?
Pour the cocktail, cue the strings, and find out whether Drops of Jupiter still holds up—or belongs next to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days on your DVD shelf.
Atlanta Rhythm Section - "A Rock and Roll Alternative" - an underrated Southern rock classic?

Saturday Night Fever - (soundtrack) - "More fun than Zeppelin with more good songs than Rumours!"
2026/08/02
Saturday Night Fever: Disco, Delusion & Travolta’s White Suit
Grab your gold chains, button that shirt down to your navel, and try not to fall off the light-up dance floor.
This week, Classic Rocktails goes completely bonkers over Saturday Night Fever—the 1977 cultural phenomenon that gave the world John Travolta’s strut, the Bee Gees’ falsettos, questionable Brooklyn accents, spectacularly bad decisions, and one of the biggest-selling soundtracks of all time.
Doc and Mac break down the movie, debate whether Tony Manero is a misunderstood dreamer or just an extremely well-dressed idiot, examine Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney’s baffling lack of chemistry, and ask how a film this dark became the ultimate disco party movie.
Along the way: the Bee Gees write history at lightning speed, Tony spends an alarming percentage of his salary on one shirt, Mac attempts to defend the movie’s plot, and the guys determine which parts have aged like fine wine—and which have aged like an open bottle of polyester.
It’s loud. It’s sweaty. It’s uncomfortable. It’s magnificent.
But nearly 50 years later, does Saturday Night Fever still hold up?
Audioslave - "Audioslave" - What happens when Soundgarden and Rage have a baby?
2026/07/27
Audioslave’s debut answered the question nobody asked:
What happens when Soundgarden and Rage have a baby—and that baby refuses to use its indoor voice?
This week on Classic Rocktails, we go deep on this fascinating metal debut.
