The $3 Box Insert That Kept Shopify Customers Coming Back
2026/09/22
How do I get more repeat customers on Shopify? Wes Buckwalter, founder of Seattle Shopify agency SeaMonster Studios, says it starts with about three bucks. He'd rather put $3 of free samples in a customer's box than spend $29 finding the next new one, and a lot of the merchants he talks to never looked at it that way. Then say thank you like you mean it. One brand Wes works with has the owner handwrite a card for every order: "I'm the owner... I actually wrote this card, and thank you." So if you're asking yourself "Do handwritten thank-you notes actually get customers to buy again?" or "Can my Shopify store get sued if it isn't accessible?", this episode is for you. And if you just want to know why Wes has an employee whose actual job title is Captain Accessible, same deal. 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: Why Wes says "it's not about loyalty, it's about affinity," and what earns a customer's second order The rule I stole from the founder of Handwrytten about what never goes in your first thank-you note How one vitamin brand got Wes to buy five products he wasn't shopping for Why nobody brags to their friends about your $50 block of cheese, and what they talk about instead Why Wes calls accessibility overlay widgets "essentially placebo," and how they can make your store a lawsuit target The AI accessibility tool Wes figures gets a store 50 to 75% of the way there, and why a human still has to check its work ⭐️ Support these amazing partners who make this show possible 👇 REWIND The undo button for Shopify. What Happens When AI, or a Shopify App Deletes Your Data?
2026/09/18
Shopify's official backup instructions include the step "copy and paste your blog posts," and that tells you most of what you need to know about who's responsible for your store's data. I read all sixteen sections of Shopify's terms of service, and section 9.9 says that when an app you installed modifies or deletes your data, Shopify isn't responsible. You are. Same goes for your staff, your freelancer, and the AI agents more merchants are handing the keys to. I walk through the four free safety nets already sitting in your Shopify admin, exactly where each one stops, and the 15-minute Undo Map that shows what your store could actually get back today. Download the Shopify Undo Map -->>  https://www.shopify1percent.com/downloads/undo-map/ KEY TAKEAWAYS If an app, a staff member, or an AI agent wipes your products, who is responsible under Shopify's terms? Why should you archive Shopify products and never delete them? What do the four free safety nets in your Shopify admin cover, and where does each one stop? Is a CSV export really a backup if your images come out as links? What five questions should you ask any Shopify backup app before you trust it? How do you build an Undo Map for your store in 15 minutes? ⭐️ Support these amazing partners who make this show possible 👇 REWIND The undo button for Shopify. A $300 Template Beat His $100,000 Shopify Store
2026/09/09
Who is actually buying from your Shopify store? Brice McBeth's team told him the average order on his salon furniture business was $900. Brice says that customer didn't exist. It was two customers: a stylist replacing a broken chair for about $350, and an owner furnishing an entire salon for $15,000 to $25,000. Any ad built for the $900 guy would have missed both. He's the founder of Neurograph and Reap Commerce, and he spent an hour showing me how many brands are marketing to someone who isn't there. 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: The three random guys test: how Brice got strangers to tell him the truth about his site, and the exact way he worded the question so they would. He deleted 25 staff profiles from his agency's About page and replaced them with one story. Leads went up 68%. Why a team page can talk a customer out of buying before you ever speak to them. Data doesn't lie, but it sure will gaslight you. What a $900 average order hid, and why Brice says most brands are making the same mistake. A 20% discount on a 35% margin product needs a 133% lift in orders just to break even on profit. Brice's math, and why most founders guess 20%. Why my kids asking "what's frills, Dad?" at the grocery store is the same lesson as Brice's ugly $300 template. King Charles and Ozzy Osbourne are the same persona on paper. What Neurograph looks at instead, and the three-word phrase that turned out to be driving an entire cohort's purchases. ⭐️ Support these amazing sponsors who make this show possible 👇 REWIND The undo button for Shopify. Your Shopify Support Data Is Worth Millions
2026/08/24
Can AI customer service actually grow a Shopify store? Andrei Negrau, co-founder and CEO of Siena AI, told me about a CPG brand that kept seeing the same thing in its support conversations. Customers were asking for smaller sample sizes. So the brand built a sample version of every product. Andrei says that one pattern generated millions in sample sales in 2025, before counting the people who then upgraded to full size. No survey. No focus group. The answer was sitting in tickets they were already closing. So if you're asking yourself "how do I use AI on my Shopify store for something other than answering tickets?" or "what is my support data actually telling me?", this episode is for you. Andrei has been building autonomous CX agents since 2023, and Siena works with brands doing $20 million a year all the way up to brands doing billions. 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: - The CPG brand that found one repeated request in its own support tickets and turned it into millions in new product revenue. - Why Andrei calls Ask Siena "Claude Code for CX", and the kind of question it answers that Shopify Sidekick can't. - Siena's HexClad case study shows automation up 65% and tickets routed to humans down 20% in 60 days. Andrei says the software wasn't the reason. - The single question that tells you which AI tool to use for which job. It has nothing to do with the model. - What happens when a customer uploads a video of a broken product, and whether AI can tell they faked it to get a refund. - I pitched Andrei a "true fan module" live on the mic. He started working out how much of it Siena can already do. ⭐️ Support these amazing sponsors who make this show possible 👇 REWIND The undo button for Shopify. More 5-Star Reviews Won't Fix What AI Says About Your Shopify Store. Here's Why.
2026/08/13
I was on a product page in Chrome the other day and a little prompt dropped down beside the URL bar offering to analyze the reviews for me. Not the store asking. Chrome asking. So I clicked it, expecting a summary of the reviews sitting right there on the page, and that isn't what I got at all. This episode is about what that actually means for your store, and why the reflex most merchants will have (get more five-star reviews) is usually the wrong first move. I walk through the three separate Google systems that get mashed together in everyone's head, then four moves: audit it, trace it, feed it, change it. The one in the middle is the whole point. 💡 KEY TAKEAWAYS What are the four completely different problems hiding behind one bad AI review summary? Why does Gemini in Chrome pull information that isn't on your product page? How can Google have 500 of your reviews and still not connect them to the right product? Which Google review systems does your review app actually support, and how would you know? When should you ask for a review on a mattress versus a pair of shorts? The Shopify Retention Math Nobody Runs
2026/08/11
Why do my Shopify subscribers cancel after the first order? Thomas Lalas has analysed real-time data from more than 2,000 ecommerce brands, and he says most lose up to 80% of their customers inside 90 days. The best ones still lose half. He also found the biggest cancellation spike lands on the exact day you rebill, which usually means the customer never knew they were subscribed. He calls it the accidental renewal. If you run a subscription on Shopify, that one is worth sitting with. We got into the math, the fix, and the one stat of his I pushed back on. So if you're asking yourself "How do I get more repeat customers on Shopify?" or "Why is my Shopify subscription churn so high?", this episode is for you. 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: - Why the biggest spike in cancellations happens on the exact day you rebill, and what your billing reminder should say instead - The three numbers in your offer that have to match, and why "too much product" is the top cancellation reason at most brands - Up to 80% of subscribers are gone within 90 days. The best brands still lose half. What they do differently. - Why asking someone to claim a discount they were already getting makes them stay longer - The stat of Thomas's I disagreed with on air, using Bold's own support data - What to actually put in a free gift, and why branded merch usually gets thrown out 🛠️ RESOURCES & LINKS MENTIONED IN SHOW: - Retention Economics (the book) on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Retention-Economics-Customers-Escaping-Unlocking/dp/B0FR3T3HC7 - Retention Economics direct from Thomas: https://artecomm.thrivecart.com/retention-economics-hardcover - Thomas's free weekly newsletter: https://artecomm.co/retentioneconomist - Thomas Lalas on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomaslalas/ - The Art of eComm: https://www.theartofecomm.com/ - Atlas, the P&L simulator that comes free with the book - Hooked by Nir Eyal, referenced on random rewards 🎁 LISTENER OFFER: The first five people who comment on YouTube, comment on Spotify, or leave a review on Apple Podcasts with one thing they learned from this episode get a free copy of Thomas's book, on me. 5 Ways to Turn a Basic Shopify Subscription Into a Membership People Actually Want
2026/08/04
I clicked the subscribe option on a coffee brand's Shopify store and found exactly one sentence underneath it. Not a benefit, not a reason to commit, just the legal disclaimer, ending in the words "if permitted." That's the most common subscription setup on Shopify by a mile: somebody installs an app, switches on a 10% discount, and waits for recurring revenue that never shows up. In this episode I walk through the five places on your store where a subscription should be sold and probably isn't, why a credit beats a discount every time, and the fifteen-minute fix you can ship before dinner tonight. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why does paid commitment change how much a customer spends with you? Can anyone actually find the subscription on your Shopify store? Is 10% off enough, and what should sit alongside it? What five lines belong under your subscribe button? Why does a use-it-or-lose-it credit outperform a straight discount? Hello? Can I Speak To a Human Please? (Why The Biggest Opportunity on Shopify Right Now Isn't AI)
2026/07/28
How do I recover abandoned carts on Shopify? Ask anyone at a trade show and they'll tell you the answer is AI. My guest built a company doing the exact opposite. Steve Lequerica is the COO of LiveRecover, where real humans text the customers who bail at your checkout. Baymard says just over 70% of carts get abandoned. Steve's agents convert 21% of the conversations they start, roughly triple what a good automated Shopify SMS flow pulls on its best day. One brand recovered $147,000 in a single week. Real people, apparently, still work. So if you're asking yourself "Do abandoned cart text messages actually work on Shopify?" or "Should I use AI or real humans to recover abandoned carts on Shopify?", this episode is for you! KEY TAKE-AWAYS: The legal distinction almost no Shopify merchant knows about: why a real person can text someone who abandoned checkout without opting in, but your automated flow legally cannot For every 1 customer who redeems a discount code, 3.7 buy without one. So why is everyone still leading with 10% off? What happened when a shopper asked a competitor's AI agent "are you really a human?" The answer is why this episode is called what it is The abandoned cart is almost never about price. So what is it actually about? The brand that rebuilt its entire shipping program into three tiers using nothing but text message transcripts Why 21% recovery beats the 6% you get from automation, and what's actually happening inside those conversations The post-purchase play: turning one-time buyers into subscribers with a text from an actual person What the best brands do differently in their first 30 days (it takes about 10 minutes and a Slack channel) The black box between TikTok Shop and Shopify that's swallowing your customer phone numbers 🛠️ RESOURCES & LINKS MENTIONED IN THE SHOW: * LiveRecover: https://www.liverecover.com/ * LiveRecover on the Shopify App Store: https://apps.shopify.com/liverecover * LiveRecover pricing: https://www.liverecover.com/pricing * Steve Lequerica on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steve-lequerica-589b207a/ * Human vs AI SMS, LiveRecover's data breakdown: https://www.liverecover.com/knowledge/human-vs-ai-sms-cart-recovery * Your Customers Hate Chatbots: https://www.liverecover.com/knowledge/your-customers-hate-chatbots-heres-the-proof * Baymard Institute cart abandonment research: https://baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate * Klaviyo: https://www.klaviyo.com/ * Postscript: https://postscript.io/ * Attentive: https://www.attentive.com/ * SubSummit: https://subsummit.com/ * Bold Commerce: https://boldcommerce.com/ 🎁 SPECIAL OFFER FOR LISTENERS: Steve is giving Shopify1Percent listeners what he's calling "Free Summer." REPEAT COMMERCE: 04 - How To Improve Your "Second Order" Rate.
2026/07/24
🌟 EPISODE 4 OF OUR 20 PART REPEAT COMMERCE SERIES 🌟 Most Shopify stores run the same reorder strategy: one reminder, 30 days after purchase, sent to everyone identically forever. So the customer who bought one bag of coffee and the customer who bought six both get pinged on day 30, when one is out and the other has five months in the cupboard. In this episode I break down why the second order is the most important order in your entire customer relationship, and why almost nobody works on it. You'll get the four plays that actually earn it, starting with the big one: timing the nudge to each customer's real behaviour instead of a fixed day. Plus how to build it yourself in Shopify Flow (now free on every plan), and a new number to start tracking that most merchants have never measured. This is episode four of the Repeat Commerce series, and it adds two lines to your Repeat Commerce Scorecard. GET YOUR SCORECARD  Each episode of the Repeat Commerce Series we'll be adding a new section to the scorecard. Follow along and listen to all episodes, and by the time you're done, you'll have a full Repeat Commerce audit done on your store!  - https://www.shopify1percent.com/downloads/repeat-scorecard/  🌟 In the episode I mentioned an exclusive offer for rePete with $10,000 in free reorders. You can access that directly here: https://repete.me/jay  KEY TAKEAWAYS Why is the second order the hinge your whole business swings on? What three things does a static 30-day reorder timer completely ignore? How do you find your real reorder window and build a trigger around it? Why can a perfectly timed nudge still fail at the checkout step? When should you use a discount to win a reorder, and when does it backfire? How many second orders does your store actually get each month, and how do you find out? ⭐️ Support our amazing sponsors that make this show possible ⭐️ SATHI This episode is brought to you by SATHI, the best affiliate platform built for Shopify brands.  70% of influencer-driven revenue isn't showing up in your dashboard. REPEAT COMMERCE: 03 - The Repeat Rate Shopify Doesn’t Show You
2026/07/17
Your Shopify dashboard says forty percent of your customers come back, but that number is quietly answering a different question than the one you think you asked. In this episode I pull apart the three behaviours Shopify blends into one returning customer rate, and I show you how to build the honest number underneath it: your elective second-purchase rate, the share of customers who chose to come back without a subscription doing the work. We build a proper cohort on the whiteboard where a proud 40% becomes a 25% that tells the truth, I show you how to pull yours with Sidekick in about ten minutes, and I give you a simple four-profile grid to know exactly what to do next. This is episode three of the Repeat Commerce series, and it adds two more lines to your Repeat Commerce Scorecard. Is Shopify's returning customer rate wrong, or is it just answering a different question? How do subscriptions quietly inflate your repeat rate and hide a leak? How do you build a proper cohort to find your true elective second-purchase rate? What's the fastest way to pull this number using Sidekick on any Shopify plan? REPEAT COMMERCE: 02 - Run The Math Before You Raise The Ad Budget
2026/07/14
Episode two of the Repeat Commerce series, and this is the one where retention stops being a vibe and becomes a dollar amount. Last episode you pulled two numbers from your Shopify admin; today those numbers earn their keep. I build a fictional coffee brand on the whiteboard and run the experiment everyone quotes but nobody calculates: what a five point lift in repeat purchase rate is actually worth, and what buying that exact same growth through ads would cost instead. Same top line, opposite sign. Plus, your sticky note from episode one officially graduates into the Repeat Commerce Scorecard, a running retention audit of your own store that we'll add to every episode. It's a free download so you can follow along for the rest of the series. GET YOUR SCORECARD - https://www.shopify1percent.com/downloads/repeat-scorecard/  Each episode of the Repeat Commerce Series we'll be adding a new section to the scorecard. Follow along and listen to all episodes, and by the time you're done, you'll have a full Repeat Commerce audit done on your store!    KEY TAKEAWAYS What did the famous "5% retention = 25 to 95% more profit" stat actually study, and does it apply to Shopify stores? What's the difference between a five percent lift and a five percentage point lift (and why do merchants mix them up)? How do you calculate what a five point repeat rate improvement is worth to your store in ninety seconds? Why can two strategies produce identical revenue and do opposite things to your bank account? What does investing in retention actually look like beyond sending more newsletters? What's the Repeat Commerce Scorecard, and how do you start yours today? ⭐️ Support our amazing sponsors that make this show possible ⭐️ SATHI This episode is brought to you by SATHI, the best affiliate platform built for Shopify brands.  70% of influencer-driven revenue isn't showing up in your dashboard. The ONE Thing AI Can't Copy About Your Shopify Store - with Matt Edmundson
2026/07/07
What's the one thing AI can't copy about your Shopify store? Everything else is up for grabs. AI can clone your site in a weekend, rewrite your product pages, and undercut your ads before lunch. Matt Edmundson has built, sold, and failed at 20+ Shopify and eCommerce brands since 1998, generating over £75 million in sales, and he's convinced the only real moat left is you. With 61% of Google searches now ending without a click and ad costs climbing every year, the brands winning on Shopify aren't the ones spending more. They're the ones nobody can be. This one gets tactical fast. So if you're asking yourself "How do I compete with AI on Shopify?" or "How do I build a Shopify business worth selling?", this episode is for you! 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: Why the same Shopify business at the exact same revenue can sell for a 3x multiple or a 9x multiple, and the one factor that decides it The acquisition strategy Matt uses to buy brands without actually paying for them What happens to your store's value the day you can disappear for three months and nothing breaks Why "AI slop" product pages are quietly turning your Shopify store beige, and how to spot if yours is one of them The six channels you need for organic traffic now that Google, YouTube, and social search are all at parity The llms.txt trick (and the little footer link) Jay's testing to get AI to actually recommend his brand correctly Why your repeat purchase rate, not your ad spend, is the number that builds a business worth wanting 🛠️ RESOURCES & LINKS MENTIONED IN SHOW: Aurion (Matt's company): https://www.auriondigital.com/ The eCommerce Podcast (Matt's show): https://www.ecommerce-podcast.com/ Matt Edmundson (personal site, STORY-SEO framework, 90-day Instagram challenge): https://www.mattedmundson.com/ Matt on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattedmundson/ Vegetology (Matt's vegan supplement brand): https://www.vegetology.com/ Profit First by Mike Michalowicz: https://mikemichalowicz.com/ Naked Nutrition: https://nakednutrition.com/ Descript (transcription and editing): https://www.descript.com/ Aqua Voice (voice dictation): https://withaqua.com/ llms.txt spec (just Google "llms.txt" if the link changes): https://llmstxt.org/ ⭐️ Support our amazing sponsors that make this show possible ⭐️ SATHI This episode is brought to you by SATHI, the best affiliate platform built for Shopify brands.  70% of influencer-driven revenue isn't showing up in your dashboard. REPEAT COMMERCE: 01 - What Number Predicts If Your Shopify Store Survives?
2026/07/01
This is episode one of my new Repeat Commerce series, a run of about 20 episodes all about the business of the second order, the third order, and the tenth. I'm starting with the argument the whole series is built on: repeat commerce should be the default way you build a Shopify store, not the thing you get to later. The average new customer now costs merchants around $29 in losses while the average repeat sale makes about $39 in profit, so the second order isn't a bonus, it's the actual business. In this one I break down the three lies that got ecommerce hooked on acquisition, and I walk you through pulling two numbers in your Shopify admin that most merchants have never looked at. Grab those numbers before the next episode, because we're going to spend this series moving them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why does the average new customer now lose you money on the very first order? What are the three lies that got ecommerce addicted to acquisition? Is retention really an email problem, or is it a design decision you're skipping? Why does waiting until you scale to fix repeat make it harder, not easier? Where do you find your true repeat purchase rate in Shopify (and how is the default number fooling you)? What counts as a healthy repeat rate for your specific category? What If "Shop by Color" Was the Most Valuable Spot on Your Shopify Site?
2026/06/26
⭐️ Try SATHI, the best affiliate platform built for Shopify brands. Our listeners get early access at MySATHI.io  20% off with code: JAY ⭐️ Why don't Shopify color filters ever show you the right color? Color is one of the top three filters in all of ecommerce, and most stores still run it on made-up names like "midnight sand" and a box of Crayola tags. Over a third of shoppers use visual search now, and more than half trust what they see over whatever you typed into the product description. Bridger and Carson Hart built Hoppn to fix exactly that, and Shopify brands using their color wheel are seeing 1.6x bigger carts. Your "denim" tag never stood a chance. So if you're asking yourself "how do I add a shop by color feature to my Shopify store?" or "why don't my Shopify color filters actually work?", this episode of Shopify1Percent is for you! 💡 KEY TAKE-AWAYS: Why is "blue" the most useless filter on your entire Shopify store? How a Body Glove wetsuit on Stranger Things turned into real-time color searches the night the episodes dropped The reason even Nike and Nordstrom can't actually show you every blue product they sell How some brands are hitting 1.6x bigger carts and 3.5x conversion just by changing the way shoppers pick a color No black is the same black, and that tiny difference is quietly costing you sales you'll never see Color isn't a word, it's a three-dimensional data point (and yes, that should change how you think about your catalog) The only things that belong in your top nav are the ones that lead to money, so why is "shop by color" sitting in everyone's footer? 🛠️ RESOURCES & LINKS MENTIONED IN SHOW: Hoppn (Infinite Color Search): https://hoppn.com/ Infinite Color Search on the Shopify App Store: https://apps.shopify.com/infinite-color-search-by-hoppn Spyder Surfboards (go try the color wheel live): https://spydersurf.com/ Natalie Martin (shop by color, right in the header): https://nataliemartin.com/ Body Glove: https://www.bodyglove.com/ Bridger Hart on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bridger-hart-760376178/ Carson Hart on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carsonhart/  🎁 Special offer for listeners: Bridger and Carson are personally running live demos and walkthroughs for brands right now (the actual founders, not a sales bot reading a script). So I read every one, clicked into the help docs behind the marketing, and pulled the 11 I'd actually turn on if this were my business. The idea running through almost all of them is that there's now a fourth place your customers buy, inside AI chats like ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, and the Shop app, and those assistants read your product data, not your beautiful homepage. I cover what each feature does, who should care, and the exact next step, then hand you the single 1% job to do tonight. KEY TAKEAWAYS Is your product data actually set up to show up when someone shops inside ChatGPT or the Shop app? Could Campaign Autopilot run ads next to your existing setup, for the price of the ad spend alone? What can Sidekick do now that it works inside your other apps and not just Shopify? Are you still publishing theme changes live at midnight when Rollouts can schedule and A/B test them? If wholesale buyers reorder about four times more often, why is B2B still switched off in your admin? What's the one product description you should rewrite before you touch anything else?
