187 - How a four-day work week built a high-performance culture
2026/09/29
Absolutely. I’d make this one quite punchy because the four-day week at 100% salary is such a strong hook, but then broaden it into the bigger law firm growth story.
Episode Description
What if your law firm could move to a genuine four-day working week, pay everyone 100% of their salary, and still achieve ambitious growth?
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I’m joined by Marcin Durlak, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of IMD Solicitors, to explore exactly that.
IMD introduced its four-day working week in January 2023 as part of a much bigger philosophy Marcin calls Sustainable Excellence: creating a high-performing, ambitious law firm without sacrificing the people responsible for its success.
And the results are fascinating.
With a team of around 50, IMD has experienced exceptional staff retention, attracted lawyers from some of the UK's largest firms and, in the last year alone, grown turnover by 46%.
We talk about how the four-day week actually works, why Marcin believes measuring output matters more than measuring hours, and how IMD is now taking another major step by moving away from the traditional billable hour towards fixed and value-based pricing.
We also explore AI and technology, what greater efficiency means for law firm profitability, and why Marcin believes the role of lawyers will increasingly move away from purely technical work towards relationships, judgement and becoming a trusted adviser.
Marcin also shares IMD's ambitious long-term vision to become a truly global law firm, while continuing to grow organically and maintaining the culture that has helped get them this far.
If you're a law firm owner interested in law firm growth, attracting and retaining great people, improving profitability and building a high-performance culture without burning everyone out, there’s plenty to take away from this conversation.

186 - Law Firm Growth in the Age of AI: What Actually Works? With Mark Lazarus
2026/09/22
What does it take to grow a law firm in a world where AI is changing how legal work is delivered, younger lawyers have different expectations, and simply being good at law is no longer enough to guarantee a steady flow of clients?
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I’m joined by Mark Lazarus, former Legal Director at Monster Energy and now Director of his own practice, Lazarus Legal.
Mark has experienced the legal profession from almost every angle. He’s worked in private practice, spent time as a barrister, worked in-house for a global brand and now runs his own entrepreneurial law firm.
We get into three big areas that I believe modern law firm owners need to be thinking about if they want to grow.
First, we talk about hiring, developing and motivating the next generation of lawyers. Mark shares his experience of managing Gen Z, why he values having younger lawyers working alongside more experienced colleagues, and how he incentivises his team to think beyond billable hours and become involved in business development.
Then we tackle AI.
Mark uses AI every day in his practice and believes lawyers who ignore it risk being left behind. But he also explains why it can be particularly dangerous in the hands of inexperienced lawyers who don't yet have the knowledge to recognise when an AI-generated answer is wrong.
Mark describes where we are today as the "dial-up stage of AI", which raises a fascinating question about just how powerful these tools could become over the next five or ten years.
Finally, we look at law firm marketing strategies and the importance of becoming known.
Mark explains why building a website and waiting for clients simply isn't enough. We talk about LinkedIn, video, podcasts, speaking, SEO, thought leadership and building a public profile that allows prospective clients to know, like and trust you before they ever make contact.
We also explore why the rise of AI could actually make the human side of being a lawyer even more valuable, and why freeing lawyers from routine work should create more time for conversations, relationships, judgement and genuine client care.
If you're a law firm owner thinking about growth, AI, your people or how you're going to keep attracting clients in a rapidly changing legal market, this is a conversation well worth listening to.

185 - How AI saved this Thriving Law Firm 250,000 Hours in One Year with Adrian Jaggard
2026/09/15
What does it really take to scale a law firm?
For Adrian Jaggard, the answer isn’t simply hiring more lawyers or asking people to work harder. It’s about building superior capabilities across your people, culture, technology and infrastructure.
My guest on this episode is Adrian Jaggard, CEO of AIIC Group - the parent company behind Taylor Rose, one of the UK's top 60 law firms, and its sister firms FDR Law and Kingsley Wood. Founded in 2009, the group has grown to over 2000 people across more than 20 offices.
AIIC Group has been named the fastest-growing legal and accounting services provider in Europe by the Financial Times FT|1000, being one of only a few businesses to make the list three years running. AIIC Group has also made the Sunday Times UK100.
Taylor Rose was also named as the Law firm of the year (Mid) at the British Legal Awards last year under Adrian's leadership as its CEO at the time.
We explore why trust is so important in a growing firm, how to create an environment where people feel confident taking responsibility and making mistakes, and why great delegation is about handing over outcomes rather than simply handing out tasks.
We also get into one of the biggest questions facing the legal profession right now: what happens as AI becomes increasingly capable?
Adrian shares how AIIC Group estimates it has saved around 250,000 hours through AI over the past year, and why he believes the technology will make lawyers significantly more productive rather than simply replace them.
We discuss how the role of the lawyer could change as the cost of accessing knowledge continues to fall, why the human element of legal services will become even more important, and how AI could help firms serve the huge amount of unmet demand for legal services.
But this conversation isn’t just about AI.
It’s about leadership, trust, culture, delegation and creating an environment where talented people can perform at their best.
If you’re a law firm owner looking to scale your firm without simply adding more people and more workload, there’s a lot to take away from this conversation.

184 - From 2 Solicitors to 325: How Jones Whyte is a Thriving Law Firm That Retains Top Talent
2026/09/08
How do you grow a law firm from just two solicitors to a team of 325 without losing the culture that made the firm successful in the first place?
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, Dan Warburton is joined by Greg Whyte, Managing Partner and Founder of Jones Whyte, to explore the decisions, acquisitions and leadership principles behind the firm's remarkable growth.
Greg explains why growth itself was never the goal, why law firm owners sometimes need to be bold enough to take opportunities when they arise, and what Jones Whyte has learned from acquiring and integrating five other firms.
Dan and Greg also discuss why culture ultimately comes down to respect, the importance of giving every team member a clear path for progression, and why attitude and enthusiasm can sometimes be more valuable than experience.
They also tackle one of the biggest challenges facing law firm owners: stepping away from billable work. Greg explains why making the right senior hire can be transformational and why, if you really want to get off the tools, sometimes you need to recruit someone who is actually better than you at doing the work.
Plus, Greg shares the opportunities he sees as an increasing number of established law firm owners approach retirement, and how acquisitions can provide an alternative succession route for firms without an obvious exit.
A fascinating conversation about growth, acquisitions, recruitment, culture and building a law firm that can thrive beyond its founders.

183 - How One Law Firm Owner Grew Revenue by 200% and Got His Life Back
2026/09/01
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by my client Jon Meadows, Founder of Regulation Resolution, a specialist law firm defending and protecting healthcare professionals.
And this episode is a little different, because we're sharing the real story of what has happened inside Jon's law firm since we started working together just over six months ago.
When Jon first came to me, he was heavily involved in fee earning and the day-to-day running of his firm. He was working evenings, sometimes until 2 or 3am, working weekends and struggling to find the time and headspace to focus on growing the business.
Fast forward just over six months and the transformation has been remarkable.
Comparing the most recent six-month period with the same six months the previous year, Jon's law firm has achieved over 200% revenue growth.
But here's the important part:
He's not working more to achieve it.
Jon now has his evenings back. He's stopped working weekends. He's exercising for around an hour every day. He's able to collect his children at 5pm and spend more quality time with his family.
And, in Jon's own words, he doesn't think he's "ever been happier."
In this episode, we discuss:
How Jon increased law firm revenue by more than 200%Why working harder wasn't the answer to growing his law firmEscaping the cycle of fee earning and constantly doing what's urgentHow to move from working IN your law firm to working ON itCreating a clear three-year vision for your law firm and your lifeBreaking ambitious law firm growth goals into 90-day and weekly actionsWhy saying no is essential when scaling a law firmMaking business development a consistent priorityHow Jon overcame his resistance to networking and business developmentWhy accountability can transform the performance of a law firm ownerCreating multiple streams of new business and referralsHow to grow revenue without sacrificing your health or familyWhy successful law firm leadership requires creating space to thinkMoving from fee earner to genuine law firm leaderThe importance of mentorship when growing a law firmOne of the biggest lessons from Jon's story is that law firm growth doesn't necessarily require the owner to work longer hours.
In fact, the opposite can be true.
By getting clear on where he wanted his firm and his life to go, identifying the actions that would actually move the business forward and consistently prioritising those actions, Jon has been able to grow Regulation Resolution while dramatically changing the way he spends his time.
If you're a law firm owner, managing partner, solicitor or legal entrepreneur who is working long hours, trapped in fee earning or struggling to find enough time to grow your firm, this episode is a real-world example of what's possible when you start working differently.

182 - How to Build a Law Firm That Doesn't Depend on You - With Marta Williamson
2026/08/25
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Marta Williamson, a former client of mine and the Founder and Managing Director of My Local Solicitor, to explore how law firm owners can build a profitable firm that isn't dependent on its founder.
I worked with Marta a few years ago when she was navigating the challenges of growing her consultancy practice while still heavily involved in the day-to-day legal work. Since then, she's transformed My Local Solicitor into a thriving, flexible consultancy law firm, allowing her to step away from fee earning and focus on growing the business strategically.
Marta moved to the UK from Poland at the age of 18 and went on to become the first Polish solicitor in Wrexham. She founded My Local Solicitor from a spare bedroom and has since developed it into a growing consultancy practice that brings together experienced solicitors across a wide range of legal specialisms. She has also been featured in the Law Society Gazette and is passionate about creating a modern law firm that supports both its clients and its consultants.
In this episode, we discuss:
How to build a law firm that doesn't depend on the owner Why stepping away from billable work accelerated business growth Building a successful consultancy law firm Creating systems and processes that allow your firm to scale How to recruit experienced consultant solicitors Why strategic planning becomes easier when you're not fee earning Using technology and cloud-based case management to support growth Expanding into new locations with a flexible law firm model Why local legal services still matter in an AI-driven world Balancing family life with growing a successful law firm Building a modern law firm around lifestyle and freedom Creating a business that is ready for investment and expansion Marta also shares how becoming a mother forced her to build systems that allowed the firm to operate successfully without her daily involvement, why experienced consultants have been key to the firm's success, and how she's now planning the next phase of growth through expansion, strategic partnerships and investment opportunities.
Whether you're still heavily involved in fee earning or looking to build a law firm that gives you more freedom, this episode is packed with practical insights on creating a business that can grow beyond its founder.

181 - How AI Is Changing Legal Marketing (And Why Visibility Now Wins) - With Fin Wycherley
2026/08/18
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Fin Wycherley, Founder of Rainmaker Lab, to explore how AI is transforming legal marketing and why visibility has become one of the biggest competitive advantages for modern law firms.
Fin helps law firm owners leverage AI and digital technology to solve one of the legal profession's most expensive problems: obscurity. Because in today's market, it's not always the best lawyer who wins - it's the lawyer who is best known.
Trusted by organisations including Google, Meta, the BBC and Chambers of Commerce, Fin combines expertise in law, journalism, marketing and usability to help professional firms generate more enquiries, attract better talent and build stronger brands through modern marketing strategies.
In this episode, we discuss:
The three AI shifts transforming legal marketing Why quality content now matters more than quantity How AI can strengthen your marketing instead of replacing it Creating content that attracts ideal clients instead of just other lawyers Understanding the difference between awareness content and conversion content Why niche expertise is becoming more valuable than broad marketing How to use analytics to improve your content strategy The growing importance of personal branding for lawyers Why video is becoming essential for building trust online Using AI to scale content while maintaining authenticity How law firms can become magnets for both clients and talent The biggest mistakes lawyers make with AI-generated content Fin also shares practical advice on creating marketing that resonates with the right audience, building authority in a specialist niche and using AI to support a smarter, more strategic approach to business development.
Whether you're an ambitious law firm owner, managing partner or solicitor looking to grow your profile, win more work and future-proof your marketing, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start applying immediately.

180 - How Law Firm Owners Can Thrive With Independent HR Support - With Donna Obstfeld
2026/08/11
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Donna Obstfeld, Founder and CEO of DOHR, to explore how independent HR specialists can help law firms deliver better outcomes for their employment law clients.
Employment solicitors provide expert legal advice, but there are many situations where they cannot step into an operational role. That's where independent HR professionals can make all the difference.
Donna explains how working alongside employment lawyers enables businesses to receive impartial workplace investigations, disciplinary hearings, grievance procedures and appeals, before the matter is handed back to the solicitor with the correct process completed.
If you're a law firm owner, managing partner, employment solicitor or legal professional, this episode highlights how collaborating with independent HR experts can strengthen client relationships, reduce risk and provide a more complete service.
In this episode, we discuss:
How independent HR specialists support employment solicitors Why lawyers shouldn't conduct workplace investigations for clients The role of HR in disciplinary hearings and grievance procedures Managing workplace investigations fairly and independently How to reduce the risk of Employment Tribunal claims Common HR mistakes businesses make Why documentation is critical in employee performance management Conducting effective one-to-one meetings with employees Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) and employment disputes Managing poor performance and difficult conversations Why communication beats email when resolving people issues Supporting clients through complex workplace challenges HR best practice for growing businesses Building stronger client relationships through trusted partnerships Donna also shares practical advice on helping businesses deal with sensitive workplace matters before they escalate, while explaining why employment lawyers and HR professionals achieve the best outcomes when they work together.

179 - Why the Fastest-Growing Law Firms Don't Grow Alone - With Derek Rodgers - Managing Partner at Gardner Leader LLP
2026/08/04
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Derek Rodgers, Managing Partner at Gardner Leader LLP and Chair of LawNet, to explore how collaboration, leadership and peer support can accelerate law firm growth.
Over the past 15 years, Derek has helped grow Gardner Leader from a team of around 60 people and £3.5 million turnover into a thriving regional law firm with more than 200 employees and annual turnover exceeding £18 million.
In this conversation, we discuss why some of the fastest-growing law firms don't grow in isolation. Instead, they learn from other managing partners, share best practice and use trusted peer networks to make better strategic decisions.
In this episode, we discuss:
How LawNet supports the growth of independent law firms Why peer networks help managing partners make better decisions Growing a regional law firm from £3.5 million to £18 million turnover Leadership lessons from scaling a law firm Why managing partners should spend less time fee earning and more time leading The impact of private equity on the legal sector How independent law firms can compete without selling to private equity AI in law firms and how to implement it effectively Why systems and processes should come before AI Building a leadership team that drives sustainable growth The importance of vision, culture and strategic planning Creating ambitious growth targets that unite the whole firm Why collaboration beats competition for long-term success How managing partners can avoid the loneliness of leadership Derek also shares why becoming a full-time managing partner transformed the firm's growth, how investing in leadership created capacity for innovation, and why independent firms can continue to thrive by learning from each other rather than trying to solve every challenge alone.
Whether you're leading a boutique practice or a multi-office regional firm, this episode offers practical insights into building a stronger business through collaboration, leadership and continuous learning.

177 - How Non-City Law Firms Can Attract and Retain Top Legal Talent
2026/07/21
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by David Rushmere, Partner and Co-Head of the Employment Department at Machins Solicitors LLP, to explore one of the biggest challenges facing regional law firms today: how to attract and retain top legal talent without paying City salaries.
With fierce competition for talented solicitors and changing expectations around work-life balance, flexible working and career development, law firm owners need a stronger value proposition than salary alone.
David shares how investing in coaching, leadership, career development and culture is helping his firm compete successfully for ambitious lawyers looking for more than just a pay cheque.
In this episode, we discuss:
How regional law firms can compete with City firms for talent Why salary is no longer the only deciding factor for lawyers Building a law firm culture that attracts and retains great people Coaching and mentoring junior solicitors Why work-life balance matters more than ever Leadership strategies that improve retention Creating meaningful career development plans How one-to-one coaching transforms performance Why communication skills are becoming a competitive advantage Developing future leaders within your law firm Setting realistic billing expectations that reduce burnout Why employee engagement improves profitability Creating a workplace where lawyers genuinely want to stay The future of recruitment in the legal profession David also explains why law firm owners should spend less time focusing on their own billable work and more time developing their people, creating stronger teams and building a firm where talented lawyers can thrive.
If you're struggling with recruitment, retention or developing the next generation of legal talent, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can implement in your own firm.

2026/07/14
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Tad Ostrosky, commercial lawyer, leadership mentor and B Corp advocate at Artington Legal, to explore how modern law firm leaders can build high-performing teams without creating burnout.
For decades, many law firms have relied on hierarchy, long hours and billable targets to drive performance.
Tad believes there's a better way.
We discuss why coaching, communication and creating a psychologically safe culture can produce better lawyers, stronger client relationships and more sustainable law firm growth.
If you're a law firm owner, managing partner, solicitor or legal entrepreneur looking to improve leadership, develop your team and build a thriving legal practice, this episode is packed with practical ideas.
In this episode, we discuss:
Why coaching is replacing command-and-control leadership How to build high-performing legal teams Creating a law firm culture people genuinely want to be part of The link between leadership and law firm profitability Why psychological safety improves performance How to reduce burnout while maintaining high standards Coaching junior lawyers to think independently Building confidence instead of creating dependency Why communication skills are becoming a competitive advantage Creating accountability without blame Developing future leaders inside your law firm One-to-one meetings that genuinely improve performance How AI should support, not replace, legal judgement Why investing in your people creates long-term business growth Tad also shares why law firm owners need to spend less time being the hero on every matter and more time creating an environment where their team can thrive, develop and consistently deliver exceptional client service.
If you're looking to build a more profitable law firm, improve team engagement and create a culture that attracts and retains outstanding lawyers, this episode is well worth a listen.

AI is changing the legal profession faster than ever before, but the firms that succeed won't simply be those using the latest technology. They'll be the firms that combine AI with experienced legal advice, strong leadership and effective knowledge transfer.

174 - The 3 Biggest Factors That Increase the Value of a Founder-Led Law Firm with Steven Pivnik
2026/06/30
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, I'm joined by Steven Pivnik, entrepreneur, investor, author of Built to Finish, and founder of a global technology company that grew across 12 countries before being acquired by a $4 billion strategic buyer.
Today, we're exploring the three biggest factors that increase the value of a founder-led business and how law firm owners can build a firm that buyers, partners and successors will actually want to acquire.
Many law firm owners spend decades building successful practices, only to discover that their business is heavily dependent on them and far harder to sell than they expected.
Steven shares the lessons he learned from scaling, exiting and advising founder-led businesses, including the common mistakes that reduce valuation and what owners can do years before a sale to maximise enterprise value.
In this episode we discuss:
∙ Why founder dependency reduces law firm value
∙ How to build a law firm that operates without the owner
∙ The importance of leadership teams and succession planning
∙ Why many law firms become trapped by their own success
∙ Building recurring revenue and reducing risk
∙ How buyers assess law firm value
∙ Exit planning for law firm owners
∙ Why financial reporting and corporate governance matter
∙ The role of management information and business metrics
∙ How customer satisfaction impacts business valuation
∙ The importance of employee engagement and culture
∙ How to prepare a law firm for acquisition
∙ What buyers look for during due diligence
∙ Common mistakes that derail business sales
∙ How to structure a successful exit
∙ Earn-outs, seller financing and succession strategies
∙ Why law firm owners need a plan for life after exit
Steven also shares practical advice on identifying your target sale value, selecting the right broker, reducing owner dependency and creating a business that can thrive beyond its founder.

173 - The One Shift That Makes Law Firm Acquisitions Faster and Safer
2026/06/23
In this episode of The Law Firm Owners Podcast, we're doing something a little different.
I'm joined by four specialists from four different areas of the acquisitions process to explore one of the biggest mistakes law firm owners and SME buyers make when acquiring a business:
treating advisers as separate silos instead of building a collaborative deal team.
Joining me are:
🔹 Barbara Cação, Director of CC Finance, specialising in acquisition finance and strategic funding for SMEs and professional services firms.
🔹 Giuseppe Sole, Principal Director at Xeinadin Group, one of the UK's leading accountancy and tax advisory groups.
🔹 Simon Hammond, Managing Director of Morpheus Insurance Solutions Ltd, specialists in complex insurance and M&A warranty and indemnity insurance.
🔹 David Little, Head of Company Commercial at Bishop & Sewell LLP, with extensive experience advising on business acquisitions and disposals.
Together, we explore how lawyers, accountants, finance specialists and insurance advisers can work together to deliver faster transactions, stronger due diligence, better funding outcomes and fewer surprises after completion.
