Description

If you have ever wondered why you still don't feel free — even after you left, even after the therapy, even after you finally understood what happened to you — this show is for you. The Transform into Wisdom Podcast is hosted by Mariam Kavai, PhD — a Certified Trauma-Informed Coach and Post Traumatic Growth Teacher who speaks from both sides of this journey: as a researcher and as someone who has walked this path herself. This show exists for sensitive souls ready to heal from narcissistic relationships and dysfunctional families — beyond traditional therapy — and transform deep emotional wounds into wisdom, self-trust, emotional mastery, and lasting empowerment. What makes this show different: most content stops at naming the pattern — the narcissist, the family dynamic, the cycle of abuse.  This one goes further.  Mariam blends neuroscience, nervous system research, and depth psychology with spirituality and lived truth — so you understand not just what happened, but what is happening in your brain and body right now, and exactly what it takes to come home to yourself. Because understanding what happened to you is just the beginning.  Becoming who you were always meant to be — that is where this show lives. Science meets soul. Healing meets evidence. This is Transform into Wisdom.

28: Why Some People Suffer More Than Others Part 2
2026/09/08
The Seven Dimensions of Trauma That Explain the Depth of Your Pain Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/28 In Part 1, we built the framework. Today we go deeper — into the two dimensions that ask the hardest questions. Not just what happened to you. But how it was carried out. And why. Inside Dimension Six sits a question I know many of you have been holding for a long time without quite having the language for it.  Was what happened to you calculated — or unintentional? And where does narcissistic abuse actually live on that spectrum? The answer is not what most people expect. Inside Dimension Seven, we follow the question of intention all the way down to where it actually lives. Not in his psychology. In yours.  In the meaning your wounded self constructs when the answer to why is too painful to hold. And we name — with precision — the question your nervous system is actually asking underneath all of it. We close with a special bonus written segment (only available on the webiste, no audio) on three contributing factors that shape how deeply you suffer and how you recover.  Factors that live not in the event itself — but inside you. Including an honest look at neurodivergence, the hidden cost of masking, and the question most healing spaces are too afraid to ask directly. The episode ends with a question that only you can answer. 27: Why Some People Suffer More: The 7 Dimensions of Trauma
2026/08/25
The Seven Dimensions of Trauma That Explain the Depth of Your Pain Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/27 Have you ever wondered why you are still carrying trauma — long after others seem to have moved on? Why what happened to you left a mark that therapy, time, and sheer force of will haven't been able to fully reach? In this episode, we build a framework with research that finally answers that question.  We explore seven dimensions of traumatic experience that determine how deeply a wound goes: what the event actually was, how long you were inside it, who caused it and who failed to stop it, where it happened, when in your development it arrived, how it was carried out, and why.  Along the way, we bring in the work of Judith Herman on complex PTSD, Jennifer Freyd's Betrayal Trauma Theory and the DARVO response, Ronnie Janoff-Bulman's Shattered Assumptions Theory, Kenneth Pargament on spiritual belief and trauma, and research on neurodivergence and PTSD rates that is rarely discussed in healing spaces — but that many of you will recognize immediately. This is the foundation episode. The one that says: you did not suffer this much because you are fragile. You suffered this much because of what happened, how it happened, and the specific conditions in which it arrived. 26: Why Did I Stay with a Narcissist? Unmet Childhood Needs and the Promise of Love
2026/07/28
Find the full transcript for this episode and other resources at transformintowisdom.com/26 There is a question I sat with for a long time. Not an abstract, philosophical question — a personal one. A vulnerable one. Why did I stay? And why did I keep trying? In this episode, I want to take you somewhere deeper than we have gone before. We explored in Episode 25 what we didn't receive in childhood — the wound of absence, the needs that were never met.  Today we go further. We go into what those unmet needs actually do to us — how they quietly, invisibly, with devastating precision, drive every single decision we make in love. I share a moment from a Sunday evening on my couch — a thought that crystallized everything.  I take you through what the show Euphoria reveals about how unmet needs play out in real relationships.  And I introduce the core dilemma that every child faces in early development: Can I fully be myself and still be loved — or do I have to give a part of myself to survive? We also talk about something that almost nobody names directly: it is not love that keeps us in the wrong places. It is hope. And understanding the difference between the two may be the most liberating thing you do this year. Disclaimer: This episode will challenge you. It will also free you.  If this episode speaks to you, I would be so grateful if you left a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify — it helps more sensitive souls and deep feelers find their way here. 25: Why Did I Fall for a Narcissist? The Sensitive Soul and The Soulmate from Hell
2026/07/14
Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/25 There is a story that has stayed with me for a long time. A woman. A relationship. Unimaginable harm. And when asked why she stayed — why she protected him even after everything — she answered in four words. "Because I was afraid of being alone." That is what unconscious need looks like when it is fully exposed. Not evil. Not weakness. Not a lack of love. Just a fear so deep, so old, so woven into the nervous system that it overrides everything. In this episode, I go into the territory that most healing content never reaches. Not what the narcissist did — but what was already inside you, long before they arrived. I share my own story of growing up with a narcissistic, alcoholic father. The complexity of loving someone who also frightened you. The religious and cultural layers that made naming the harm even harder.  And the profound inner work that revealed the truth: it wasn't just what happened that shaped me. It was what didn't. Drawing on Jungian psychology, attachment research, and the neuroscience of the developing child, this episode answers the questions that haunt every sensitive soul who has loved a narcissist: Why did I fall for this? Why did it feel so familiar? And what was my soul actually trying to find? Because the narcissist did not create your original wound. They revealed it. They walked into the room where the forgotten wound had been waiting in the dark — and they turned on the light. That is not a small thing. That is, in the deepest sense, the beginning of everything. If this episode speaks to you, I would love it if you left a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify — it helps more sensitive souls and deep feelers find their way here. 24: The Sensitive Soul and the Soulmate from Hell. The Making of a Toxic Relationship
2026/06/30
Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/24 You felt things first. Deeper. Longer. More completely than the people around you.  And then you fell in love with someone who seemed to finally see all of that — who matched your depth, mirrored your longing, and made your sensitivity feel like the very thing that made you extraordinary. And then the relationship became the most painful thing you have ever survived. In this episode, we go into the biology of why that happened. Not from the angle of what they did — but from the angle of who you are.  Because understanding your nervous system changes everything about how you understand this relationship, why you were drawn in, and why healing is not just possible — it is, in the deepest sense, more accessible for you than for most. We explore the four biological dimensions of the highly sensitive person (the DOES framework), what fMRI brain scans reveal about the HSP nervous system — including the mirror neuron system and the insula, and the most important — and underreported — finding in narcissism research: why the narcissist knew exactly what you needed and still hurt you. This is science meets soul. Biology meets compassion. And it is the beginning of understanding yourself at a depth that makes healing not just conceivable — but inevitable. 23: Why Your Body Won't Let You Heal: Narcissistic Abuse, Trauma & Your Nervous System
2026/06/09
Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/23 You did the work. You read the books. You named the patterns. So why doesn't your body feel free? In this episode of Transform into Wisdom, we go deep into the science and biology of why narcissistic abuse creates such profound, lasting damage — not just emotionally, but neurologically. As a PhD researcher and someone who has walked this path, I want you to understand what's actually happening in your brain and body — because that understanding is not just intellectually fascinating. It is liberating. We'll explore what brain scans reveal about PTSD and C-PTSD, why narcissistic abuse is uniquely designed to dysregulate the central nervous system, the four phases of the abuse cycle and their biological signatures, why symptoms often intensify after the relationship ends (and why that's actually a sign of healing beginning), and why targeting your nervous system directly is the missing key in most trauma recovery approaches. This is science meets soul. Head meets body. Research meets lived truth. If you've ever felt like you understand your trauma but still can't escape it — this episode is for you. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why PTSD and C-PTSD are biological injuries, not character failings — and what brain scans actually show The H.A.M.C. framework: the three brain structures most damaged by trauma (hippocampus, amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex) and what happens to each one The neurological mechanics of the narcissistic abuse cycle — including why trauma bonding is a chemical process, not a choice What Polyvagal Theory tells us about the 'stuck' nervous system — and why neuroception explains so much about life after abuse The five evidence-supported pathways for nervous system healing: EMDR, somatic therapy, vagus nerve work, meditation, and co-regulation Why healing is not about staying calm — it's about developing flexibility Enjoy the Episode!  If this episode speaks to you, I would be so grateful if you left a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. 22: Part 2 What Actually Heals Narcissistic Abuse? Why Understanding the Abuse Isn't the Same as Healing the Wound
2026/05/26
Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/22 If you listened to Part 1, you already know that no amount of knowledge about narcissism will un-break your heart. In Part 2, I want to take you somewhere deeper. I want to talk about what comes after the research, after the therapy, after the EMDR sessions — after you have processed the trauma memories and your PTSD symptoms have quieted down.  Because that in-between place — that "what now?" moment — is where so many survivors get stuck. And it is where most recovery content leaves you standing alone. The answer, I believe with everything I know as a researcher and as someone who has walked this road, is this: you heal narcissistic abuse through the nervous system. T hrough reclaiming your body. Through learning — perhaps for the first time — to actually live inside yourself. In this episode I talk about why trauma therapy is essential and non-negotiable — and I mean that — but also why it is only one part of the journey.  I talk about what it means to face your feelings rather than flee from them, why so many of us have spent years living in our heads instead of our bodies, and how the gentle dialogue you have with yourself is the bridge between the wound and the wholeness. I also share something personal. A moment on a quiet weekend evening when I was sitting with my grief — and heard something in my inner ear that I have never forgotten. You didn't come here to be held down by this. You came to overcome this. That is what I want to leave you with today. If you are ready for the next phase of your healing — when the idea of a better life ahead feels bigger than the weight of the past — visit me at transformintowisdom.com. 21: What Actually Heals Narcissistic Abuse? Why Understanding the Abuse Isn't the Same as Healing the Wound
2026/05/12
Find the full transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/21 There is a lie that floats around in narcissistic abuse recovery spaces — that if you just understand it enough, the pain will finally loosen its grip.  If you can trace the trauma, name the disorder, and decode the narcissist's mind, then maybe you'll be free. But no amount of knowledge about narcissism will un-break your heart. In this episode, I share a metaphor that will stay with you — about what it feels like to be hit by a train that never stopped.  The narcissist keeps moving, smooth and intact. The damage is not on the train. The damage is in you.  And that one realization changes everything about what healing actually requires. You'll hear why consuming more narcissism content can actually keep you stuck, why the brain's hunger to understand can work against your nervous system, and what it really means to turn the focus away from the person who hurt you — and back toward yourself. This episode also asks the questions that most recovery content avoids:  What emotional state were you in when you met this person?  What unconscious needs were driving your decisions?  And what is it in your own story that made you vulnerable? The truth will set you free. But first, it may piss you off. This is Part 1. We continue in Part 2. 18: (Part 2) 71 Years in the Making: Valerie’s Journey from Trauma to Healing
2025/09/23
Find the transcript for this episode at transformintowisdom.com/18 When Valerie left home in her mid-twenties, she thought she was stepping into a new chapter.  But like so many survivors, the past wasn’t left behind—it showed up again, this time in the shape of a relationship On the surface, she looked like she had it together: a career as a teacher, a stable life.  But behind closed doors, she was living in a secret storm.  It was the same survival pattern she learned as a child: endure chaos, accept neglect, and convince herself that it was love.  What Valerie didn’t realize then is something many survivors eventually discover—that when the past isn’t healed, it doesn’t stay in the past.  It resurfaces, disguised as love, disguised as fate. And so, what began as a relationship turned into a mirror—reflecting all the buried wounds she thought she’d left behind.  And that’s where part two of Valerie’s story begins. 17: 71 Years in the Making: Valerie’s Journey from Trauma to Healing
2025/09/09
Find other resources for sensitive souls at transformintowisdom.com/17 My next guest is 71 years old. She still rises each day with curiosity, passion, and a deep love for life — proving that healing isn’t bound by age, and growth has no expiration date. She is warm, patient, kind, and with a great personality!  Like so many women, her story began in a family shaped by both love and pain — a tapestry of warmth and joy interwoven with betrayal, violence, and trauma. And yet, she chose to keep walking, keep learning, and keep rising.  For the sake of her privacy, we kept her name anonymous, and we listen to her story of courage.  The only purpose of sharing her story is so that others who may be discouraged on the healing journey, may get the strength to continue.   She has given consent to record and release her story.  A gentle but important warning. This episode contains sensitive themes that may bring up strong emotions. What you’re about to hear is a personal story of trauma and healing, shared with honesty and courage. If you’re in an emotionally tender or vulnerable place right now, please consider whether this is the right moment to listen. By continuing, you are taking full responsibility for your own emotional well-being. Remember: you are in charge of your healing journey. 16: From Surviving to Thriving. The Missing Link in True Emotional Abuse Recovery
2025/08/26
Find the full transcript for this episode and other resources for sensitive souls at transformintowisdom.com/16 A while back, a client reached out to me at the very early stages of our working relationship and said, “According to Google, you are a scientist and researcher, how did you pivot into this work?”  And when I shared my journey with her, she said I should share it with my listeners because people seem to be afraid to step into the unknown.  People seem to be afraid to step into what is calling them from the within, from their soul and they tend to stick with what is acceptable in society.  In this episode, I want to first take you on a personal journey—one that began in places I never expected and led me to work I never imagined I’d be doing.  Life has a way of rerouting us… sometimes through loss, heartbreak, or moments we thought we’d never recover from.  And if you’ve ever wondered why healing after emotional abuse can feel like such an uphill climb even with therapy, you’re not alone.  Because here’s the truth: therapy alone isn’t enough to fully reclaim yourself after emotional abuse.  It can help you survive—but survival is not the finish line. In the second part of episode, I’ll reveal the missing link that turns recovery into something far greater.  It’s the difference between patching up the pieces and thriving—not because of what broke you, but despite it.  This is where the real transformation begins. Find the full transcript for this episode and other resources for sensitive souls at transformintowisdom.com/15 There comes a moment when you stop trying to figure out what they did —and start asking: “What do I believe now?” In this episode, we’re not focused on the abuser. We’re focused on you — and how to reclaim the reality that was taken, twisted, or silenced. We’ll talk about what gets in the way — like rationalization, the stories we tell to survive...and intellectualization, where we stay in our heads to avoid feeling what hurts. And then, we’ll begin to explore the deeper shift—the kind of shift that doesn’t just change how you think…but how you feel in your body, how you see the moment, and how you finally start to trust yourself again. 14: When the Truth Hurts: Healing the Confusion That Gaslighting Left Behind
2025/07/29
Find the full transcript for this episode and other resources for sensitive souls at transformintowisdom.com/14 The first puzzle piece in healing from gaslighting and cognitive dissonance is understanding the core template of a narcissist, which is who they truly are beneath the charm, the chaos, and the illusion. Not the version they sold you. Not the mask. But the actual inner blueprint—the narcissistic template that runs on repeat. And when you see it clearly, stripped of all the theater and emotional debris… something shifts. You STOP taking their cruelty personally. You STOP trying to make sense of NONSENSE.You STOP dancing with delusion.Up to this point you have taken what the narcissist did as PERSONAL. By the end of this conversation, you will realize how IMPERSONAL their actions are.  Because what you’ve been internalizing all these years?  Was never about YOU.  It was always their broken algorithm.  Their distorted lens. By the end of this episode, my hope is that you’ll feel something priceless: RELIEF, CLARITY, AND FREEDOM. You stop focusing on the narcissist, and you focus on you so that the real work of individuation and coming home to yourself can begin.  Support the show Stay empowered and true to yourself. — Mariam Kavai, Transform into Wisdom If something in today's episode stirred something in you — if you are ready to move beyond understanding what happened and into actually rebuilding — I would love to connect with you.
