Ep232 What is Nausea?
2026/10/27
Nausea is that unpleasant feeling that you might vomit.
In this episode, you’ll learn what nausea is, some of its common causes, practical steps first aiders can take to help a nauseous patient, and the role of antiemetic medications.
We’ll also look at the warning signs that suggest nausea and vomiting may require further medical assessment.

Ep231 First Aid use of Electrolyte Replacement Tablets
2026/10/26
In this episode, you’ll learn what electrolytes are, why our bodies need them, and how oral rehydration solutions such as Hydralyte® work.
We’ll also look at when electrolyte replacement may be useful, how glucose helps the body absorb sodium and water, and some important precautions first aiders should consider.

Ep230 First Aid Fast Quiz 30
2026/10/25
It’s time to put your first aid knowledge to the test with First Aid Fast Quiz 30. Five quick questions covering some of our recent topics, including patient handover, respiratory assessment, patient positioning, PPE and neurological assessment.
How much have you remembered? Test yourself on IMIST-AMBO, PASSRESPS, patient positions, first aid glove selection and the Glasgow Coma Scale. Keep score, challenge your colleagues, and see if you can get five out of five.

Ep229 Glasgow Coma Scale – GCS
2026/10/22
The Glasgow Coma Scale, or GCS, provides a structured way to assess and communicate a patient’s level of consciousness. By assessing eye opening, verbal response and motor response, first aiders and healthcare professionals can build a clearer picture of a patient’s neurological status.
In this episode, you’ll learn how the three components of GCS are scored, what a score between 3 and 15 represents, and why documenting individual eye, verbal and motor scores can be more useful than recording the total alone. We’ll also explore why changes in GCS over time can be an important warning sign of patient deterioration.

Ep228 What’s in a First Aid Kit? Non-Adherent Dressings
2026/10/21
Non-adherent dressings are a simple but important part of a well-stocked first aid kit. Unlike adhesive or island dressings, they don’t have an adhesive border, meaning they need to be secured with tape, a conforming bandage or another suitable method.
In this episode, you’ll learn the difference between adhesive island dressings and non-adherent dressings, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and why choosing the correct size matters. We’ll also look at what makes a good minor wound dressing and why the dressing should always be selected to suit the wound — not the other way around.

Ep227 Anatomy – Intestines: Do they matter when it comes to first aid?
2026/10/20
Several metres long and packed inside the abdomen, the intestines play a major role in digestion, nutrient absorption, water balance and waste removal. Understanding the difference between the small and large intestines gives first aiders useful context when assessing patients with abdominal complaints.
In this episode, you’ll learn the basic anatomy and function of the intestines and how intestinal problems might present in a first aid setting.

Ep226 Black, Purple, Blue, Green? What Colour Glove is Best?
2026/10/20
White, clear, blue, black — disposable gloves come in plenty of colours, but colour alone doesn’t necessarily tell you what they’re made from. Understanding the differences between latex, vinyl and nitrile gloves can help first aiders choose appropriate PPE for patient care.
In this episode, you’ll learn why blue nitrile gloves are often preferred for first aid, including their durability, dexterity and lack of natural rubber latex proteins. You’ll also discover why glove colour can have practical implications, including making blood and other contamination easier to see, and why black gloves aren’t always the best choice for patient care.

Ep225 Patient Positions
2026/10/14
Supine, prone, lateral, Fowler’s, semi-recumbent and Trendelenburg — patient positioning is more than simply deciding whether someone should sit or lie down. The position of your patient can affect their comfort, airway, breathing, assessment and ongoing management.
In this episode, you’ll learn the terminology used to describe common patient positions, when different positions may be appropriate, and why the recovery position has an important role in airway management. You’ll also discover why patient positioning should always be based on the patient’s condition rather than simply following a routine.

Ep224 PASSRESPS – Assessing Respiratory Status
2026/10/08
When a patient is having difficulty breathing, respiratory rate is only one part of the picture. PASSRESPS provides first aiders with a structured approach to assessing respiratory status and recognising signs that a patient may be deteriorating.
In this episode, you’ll learn how PASSRESPS guides you through position, appearance, speech, breathing sounds, respiratory rate and rhythm, effort, skin, pulse and state of consciousness. You’ll also discover why watching and listening to your patient can tell you just as much as the numbers on your monitoring equipment.

Ep223 What is IMIST-AMBO?
2026/10/07
When an ambulance arrives, a clear and structured handover can be just as important as the treatment you’ve already provided. IMIST-AMBO gives first aiders a simple framework for communicating essential patient information to paramedics without forgetting the important details.
In this episode, you’ll learn what each part of IMIST-AMBO stands for, what information should be included in your handover, and why treatment trends and patient history matter. You’ll also discover how a calm, concise handover can help ambulance crews quickly understand your patient and continue their care.

Ep222 Medication: Bite and Sting Creams
2026/08/16
A bite or sting can be painful and itchy, but not every bite requires emergency treatment. Bite and sting creams can provide effective relief for minor reactions, but it’s important to understand their role and recognise when symptoms may indicate something more serious.
In this episode, you’ll learn what bite and sting creams are, the different forms they come in, when they’re indicated, and when they should not be used. You’ll also discover common over-the-counter products, including Stingose®, and why recognising the signs of anaphylaxis is far more important than simply treating the bite.

Ep221 First Aid Reports
2026/08/13
The patient has gone, the ambulance has left, and the incident is over—but your job isn’t finished. A well-written first aid report creates a clear record of what happened, what you found, what treatment you provided, and the patient’s outcome. Good documentation supports patient care, workplace safety, and legal compliance.
In this episode, you’ll learn what information every first aid report should contain, including the incident details, patient assessment, treatments provided, and final outcome. You’ll also discover why accurate, factual documentation is an essential clinical skill and an important part of every first aider’s role.

Ep220 First Aid Fast Quiz 22
2026/08/11
It’s time to test your first aid knowledge again. Over the past ten episodes we’ve explored blood pressure monitoring, altered conscious states, spinal management, anatomy, and wound care.
In this quiz episode, you’ll revisit topics including the AEIOU-TIPS mnemonic, soft cervical collars, bladder anatomy, adhesive wound dressings, and blood pressure equipment. Pause the episode if you need extra time and see how many answers you can remember before the explanations begin.

Ep219 What’s in a First Aid Kit? Adhesive Wound Dressings
2026/08/10
Not every cut needs the same dressing. From small adhesive strips to large island dressings, choosing the right dressing can improve comfort, protect the wound, and support healing. Simply reaching for the first adhesive strip in the kit may not always be the best option.
In this episode, you’ll learn the differences between adhesive strips and island dressings, when to move to a larger dressing, and why the absorbent pad is more important than the sticky edges. You’ll also discover the importance of checking for adhesive sensitivities, understanding waterproof versus breathable dressings, and why every first aid kit should contain a range of dressing sizes.
