Scientific Evidence for the Survival of Consciousness
2026/02/05
In this episode I'm talking to Dr. Nicolas Rouleau, Ph.D. about his Essay An Immortal Stream of Consciousness: The scientific evidence for the survival of consciousness after permanent bodily death. This Essay was a Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies Essay Competition Winner Is experience possible after death? "An immortal stream of consciousness: The scientific evidence for the survival of consciousness after permanent bodily death" was the title of Nicolas Rouleau's award-winning 2021 submission for the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies' international essay competition. Adapted here as a short book, the essay describes a transmissive theory of consciousness inspired by William James and supported by experimental evidence in the field of bioelectromagnetism including the works of the author (Rouleau) and his former doctoral mentor, Michael A. Persinger. It is one of few scientific theories that reconciles physicalism with survival of consciousness after bodily death. Bio Dr. Nicolas Rouleau is a neuroscientist, bioengineer, and Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at Wilfrid Laurier University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University and Affiliate Scientist at the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts. Dr. Rouleau was the last PhD student of Michael Persinger of Laurentian University, whose work on the electromagnetic bases of consciousness inspired Rouleau to pursue his dissertation on the material-like properties of brain tissues, including their capacity to filter electromagnetic fields. In 2017, he joined the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University as a Postdoctoral Researcher and was a founding member of David Kaplan's Initiative for Neural Science, Disease, & Engineering at Tufts, focusing on minimal cognitive responses in bioengineered brain models. As a post-doc, Dr. Rouleau published several 3D tissue models of Alzheimer's Disease and traumatic brain injury. During the research freeze of the COVID pandemic, he wrote an award-winning essay on the topic of transmissive consciousness for the Bigelow Institute of Consciousness Studies, which garnered international attention. In 2023, Dr. Rouleau became a faculty member at Laurier and is now a PI of the Self-Organizing Units Lab (SOUL), which is supported by Tri-Council awards to investigate the mechanisms of embodied cognition and synthetic biological intelligences in customizable, bioengineered neural tissues. He also co-directs (with his colleague, Dr. Murugan) the Center for Tissue Plasticity and Biophysics (TPAB) at Laurier. He is most interested in the fundamental and scale-invariant properties of cognitive systems as well as the pursuit of unifying principles that reconcile organic neural function with analogous phenomena in cells, machines, and non-neural organisms.   https://www.bigelowinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/rouleau-immortal-consciousness.pdf https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Life Review in Near-Death Experiences
2026/02/04
In this episode I am talking about an inportant element of the Near Death Experience, the life review. Why do stories of near-death experiences (NDEs) continue to captivate scientists, philosophers, clinicians, and spiritual seekers alike? And why does one element of these experiences, the life review, seem to linger so powerfully in the public imagination? The reported “life review,” is where people describe a panoramic encounter with their own lives. Across decades of research, these accounts have raised profound questions about memory, identity, empathy, and the nature of consciousness itself. This episode is for anyone fascinated by big questions: What shapes our sense of self? How do our actions ripple through the lives of others? And how might experiences at the edge of life reshape the way we understand death, ethics, and human connection? Whether you’re drawn to the science of altered states, the philosophy of consciousness, or the personal stories that emerge from NDE research, this conversation invites you to reflect on why the life review continues to resonate so deeply in contemporary culture. If you’re interested in near-death experiences, consciousness research, end-of-life psychology, or the deeper meaning of human relationships, this episode offers a thoughtful space to explore why the life review has become one of the most discussed—and most debated—aspects of NDEs today. https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Near Death Experience
2026/02/02
This week I'm talking to Kimberly Clark Sharp about her book 'AFTER THE LIGHT: What I Discovered on the Other Side of Life That Can Change Your World' and her part in the Maria's shoe case. Death is nothing to fear-and life without fear can be lived to the fullest. This is Kimberly Clark Sharp's message from her extraordinary experience during the time after her heart suddenly stopped beating and she lay on the sidewalk, not breathing, and without a pulse. Swept into a peaceful loving place of brilliant golden light and warm comfort, she saw, for the first time, the meaning of life-and death. Thereafter, Kimberly, with hamster Toto at her side, left Kansas for Seattle-known as "the Emerald City"-to fulfill a destiny devoted to the service of others as foreseen at the end of her near-death experience. Guided by a new sensitivity to the presence of angels, demons and other invisibilities, Kimberly attained a Masters degree in Social Work at the University of Washington and began a career in medical social work that put her in direct contact with dying people-and people who almost died and came back. It is the inspirational stories of these near-death experiences, as well as Kimberly's own life challenges in love, family life and the diagnosis of breast cancer, that form the core of this surprisingly funny page-turner of a book. Bio Kimberly Clark Sharp, MSW, LiCSW had a near-death experience at twenty-two.  She is the author of After the Light: The Spiritual Path to Purpose (Wm. Morrow & Co. 1995); audio (HarperCollins 1995). Kimberly Clark Sharp is the founder of Seattle International Association of Near-Death Studies, the world’s oldest and largest support group for near death experiencers, since 1982. Kimberly is an international conference and workshop speaker, a consultant to news and entertainment media, and has been published in many textbooks, journals, and magazines.  She worked for two decades as a clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington. She co-taught a Terminal Illness Seminar at the University of Washington, School of Medicine. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0791LJL4H https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Shared Death Experiences
2026/01/29
In this episode, we step gently into the quiet, intimate world of shared death experiences, those rare and deeply human moments when the boundary between the living and the dying seems to soften, and something meaningful is perceived in the space between them. These experiences are not about spectacle or drama. They are about presence, stillness, and connection. They happen in hospital rooms, bedrooms, war zones, and quiet homes, often unnoticed by the outside world, yet profoundly life-changing for those who witness them. We explore what it means when a person who is not dying finds themselves sharing in the transition of someone who is. Sometimes this comes as a feeling of peace, sometimes as light, sometimes as a presence, and sometimes simply as a deep knowing that something sacred is taking place. These are not stories told to impress or persuade, but stories told because they stay with people for the rest of their lives. The episode touches on the remarkable account of Karl Skala, a soldier in the First World War, who witnessed something profoundly gentle and luminous while sitting beside a dying comrade in the midst of battlefield chaos. It also explores modern testimonies from families, carers, and loved ones who describe sensing a shared crossing at the moment of death, moments that feel less like loss and more like accompaniment. There is also a personal reflection on individual named accounts of shared death experiences, including stories of people who felt themselves drawn into the transition of a loved one without being physically unwell themselves. These accounts are spoken of not as beliefs to be argued, but as experiences to be listened to with care and respect. This episode offers space rather than conclusions. It does not seek to define death, explain it away, or contain it within tidy language. Instead, it allows these experiences to speak for themselves, as human moments of connection, intimacy, and meaning. It is an episode for listening slowly, for sitting with the mystery rather than solving it, and for remembering that some of the most important things we encounter in life are not loud, dramatic, or visible, but subtle, gentle, and deeply personal. https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Encountering the Psychomanteum
2026/01/27
What if you could speak to your deceased loved ones one more time? What if grief didn't have to mean letting go? What if you could speak to your deceased loved ones one more time? What if grief didn't have to mean letting go? For over twenty years, Dr. Irene Blinston has guided grieving individuals through a remarkable healing process using an ancient Greek ritual adapted for modern use. In this groundbreaking book, she reveals the power of the psychomanteum, a darkened chamber designed to facilitate contact with the deceased-and its profound ability to reduce the symptoms of grief. Drawing from landmark research at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Dr. Blinston shares compelling case studies of participants who experienced dramatic reductions in grief symptoms after just three hours using the psychomanteum process. Whether or not they made "contact" with their loved ones, 92 out of 100 participants reported lasting healing. Gazing into the Afterlife explores: • The history and science behind mirror-gazing and limited sensory stimuli for grief healing • Detailed protocols for the psychomanteum process, from preparation through integration • Moving accounts of transformative encounters including visual, auditory, and deeply emotional • Applications beyond grief due to death, including trauma, loss of identity, and life transitions • The crucial role of trained facilitators in creating safe, sacred healing spaces This isn't about proving life after death. It's about discovering a pathway to peace and healing. The research shows that the psychomanteum helps the bereaved maintain healthy continuing bonds with the deceased while moving forward with their lives. From sudden deaths and complicated grief to ambiguous loss and disenfranchised grief, this innovative approach offers hope where traditional methods fall short. Whether you're a mental health professional interested in new tools for grief work, a bereaved individual looking for healing, or simply curious about consciousness and human potential, this book provides both scientific rigor and compassionate guidance. Dr. Blinston's unique combination of research expertise, facilitator experience, and personal transformation makes this an essential resource for understanding grief in the 21st century. The psychomanteum isn't magic-it's a carefully structured process that creates space for what the grieving heart most needs: connection, expression, and peace. Discover how this ancient practice, backed by modern research, is transforming grief work and offering relief to those who carry the weight of loss. Bio Irene Blinston is an independent researcher who studies the impact and aftereffects of supernatural and paranormal experiences, with special interest in encounter experiences. She earned her PhD in transpersonal psychology with specializations in spiritual guidance, creative expression, and transpersonal education and research. While still a student, Dr. Blinston was recognized as a rising figure in the field of transpersonal psychology. She conducted her doctoral dissertation research studying the impact and life-long aftereffects of religious apparitions experienced in childhood. She was also part of the psychomanteum bereavement project, in which participants were facilitated to make contact with their deceased loved ones in order to reduce grief symptoms. She is also a professional astrologer, Human Design for Business and Profit Potential Analyst, and is certified in a variety of money and business coaching models. Her other areas of interest include miracles, mysticism, religions, altered states of consciousness, consciousness studies, the power of the mind, and all areas that encompass the vast human potential. Past Life Regession
2026/01/20
This is a recording of me undergoing a past life regression. In this moment, I’m not acting as presenter or commentator, but as the subject of the session itself. What you hear is exactly how it unfolded. As the session progresses, you’ll hear my voice soften and slow as I move deeper into the experience. I describe images, emotions, and impressions as they arise, often tentatively, sometimes with long pauses in between. These silences are part of the process. They mark moments of listening inwardly, allowing memories from beyond this lifetime to surface in their own time. For me, past life regression is a spiritual practice, one that opens a doorway to the continuity of the soul and the deeper story we carry with us. During this session, I wasn’t analysing or questioning what appeared. I was simply witnessing it, trusting that what came forward was meaningful, even if it arrived only in fragments.   https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Spontaneous After-Death Communications
2026/01/06
Is death the end? Millions have felt the departed reach out, but skepticism remains. Grief psychologist and homicide survivor Dr. Jan Canty offers a deeply investigated, compassionate, and affirming exploration of spontaneous after-death communications (ADCs) by blending decades of clinical experience, personal insights, and riveting stories that counter the stigma of this almost-universal phenomenon. As a clinical psychologist, Jan Canty did not believe in ADCs, even after she experienced one when her husband was brutally murdered. But she could not ignore countless stories from her patients and podcast interviewees as they poured in. A presence, vivid dreams, timely signs—these moments comfort, heal, and assure us that death does not terminate; it transforms. For those mourning, providing grief support, or wondering what awaits them on the other side, Rekindled builds a vital bridge between personal experience and science by: Illuminating the historical, scientific, and cultural shifts that shape our understanding of ADCs Exploring how ADCs promote healing and restore connection Integrating insights from neuroscience and physics Highlighting a gap in grief intervention tactics and offering practical tools to caregivers and mental health providers Sharing firsthand accounts so no one feels alone in what they’ve seen, heard, or felt Rekindled sheds light on the one experience that connects us all. This is a must-read for fans of Dr. Eben Alexander’s Proof of Heaven, and an accessible and needed resource for the grieving, as well as counselors and psychologists, hospice workers, death doulas, and clergy. Bio A native Detroiter, Jan Canty, PhD, is a psychologist, writer, photographer, educator, consultant, and cancer survivor. She holds a terminal degree in psychology as well as a post-doctoral fellowship from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Canty has taught psychology at all levels—from community college students to postdoctoral interns. She worked as a forensic psychologist in a large mental hospital for several years. Dr. Canty was awarded Faculty of the Year in her second year of teaching graduate school. She received awards for her photography. Life circumstances delivered her to be uniquely qualified to address surviving murder both from a professional and a personal viewpoint. This is the underpinning of her true- crime memoir, A Life Divided (in print and audiobook formats). Her second book, What Now? Navigating the Aftermath of Homicide and Suicide is a reference book. It is the book she wished she had as a new widow. Dr. Canty also launched a podcast for other homicide survivors entitled Domino Effect of Murder in 2020, now heard in fourteen countries, wherein some guests cautiously told their stories for the first time. Others were already center stage, such as Cook County sheriff’s lead investigator, Detective Jason Moran, who works to find answers for families awaiting word on the murders committed by serial murderer John Wayne Gacey. In August of About the Author 253 2019, she was the only nonlaw enforcement guest to speak at the International Association for Identification, the oldest and largest forensic association in the world. In addition, she has been a contributor to Death Investigator Magazine, a digital publication for the death- investigator community. Dr. Canty also administers a private Facebook group (Homicide Survivors and Thrivers) for survivors struggling with grief after homicide. These endeavors opened a rich network of consultants who’ve generously con tributed to this book. Dr. Canty has appeared as a guest on many podcasts both in the United States and internationally. She presently lives and works (as a consultant) for the federal government and spends her free time with her family, friends, and two Saint Bernards, and continuing her photography, gardening, writing, and traveling. https://jancantyphd.com/ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D2Q1WV3W https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Terminal Lucidity
2025/12/30
In this episode, I explore terminal lucidity, a little-known but well-documented phenomenon that occurs near the end of life. Terminal lucidity describes the sudden return of clear thinking, memory, communication, and personal awareness in people who were previously unable to show these abilities because of severe brain disease or injury. This can happen hours or days before death and has been reported in people with advanced dementia, long-term psychiatric illness, brain tumours, strokes, and serious brain damage. What makes terminal lucidity especially important is that it appears in individuals whose brains are believed to be physically incapable of producing normal consciousness. In many cases, the brain damage is extensive and has been present for years. Recovery is not expected. Yet the person may suddenly recognise loved ones, speak clearly, remember names and events, and show their usual personality again. In this episode, I examine terminal lucidity through the idea that consciousness may exist independently of the brain, with the brain acting as a receiver or filter rather than a generator. From this point of view, brain damage limits the expression of consciousness rather than destroying consciousness itself. As death approaches, the brain’s normal control systems may weaken, briefly allowing clearer expression. I discuss the work of Christopher Kerr, a hospice doctor whose research shows that inner mental life often becomes more organised and meaningful as death approaches, even while the body and brain are failing. I also look at research by Peter Fenwick and Bruce Greyson, who have studied clear consciousness during severe brain impairment and near-death states. Using clear explanations and real case examples, this episode asks a challenging question: if consciousness can return when the brain is at its weakest, does this suggest that consciousness is not produced by the brain at all? https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A Reflective Collection of Interview Clips on Life and Death
2025/12/29
Rather than offering a single answer or a definitive position, the programme unfolds as a carefully curated sequence of voices, each reflecting a lived experience that sits at the edge of what we understand. The structure is simple and deliberate. A series of interview clips, drawn from different lives and circumstances, are placed side by side, allowing patterns, tensions, and moments of resonance to emerge naturally. Throughout the episode, the host’s presence is calm and unassuming. His interjections are sparse, thoughtful, and gently probing, offering space rather than direction. He treats each account with the same careful attention, neither affirming nor dismissing what is heard. This measured approach invites listeners to sit with uncertainty, to notice their own reactions, and to reflect on why such stories continue to move us. Taken together, the voices in this episode do not form an argument so much as a conversation across experiences. They ask what consciousness might be, how deeply it is tied to the body, and why encounters with death so often seem to reshape how people live. Beneath every clip runs a quieter thread: the human need to make sense of loss, to find continuity, and to feel that our lives are part of something larger than a single ending. This is an episode best approached without expectation, listened to slowly and with an open mind. It offers no answers, only the chance to reflect, to wonder, and perhaps to recognise something of your own questions in the voices of others. https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Children's Near Death Experiences
2025/12/23
This episode explores one of the most compelling areas of near-death research: documented spiritual near-death experiences reported by children. While adult accounts of NDEs are widely discussed, children’s experiences offer a distinct and often unsettling clarity. With minimal exposure to religious doctrine or cultural narratives about death, children tend to describe what they experienced without symbolic overlay, interpretation, or fear. Drawing on named, traceable cases documented by pediatrician and researcher Melvin Morse, as well as long-term analyses by P.M.H. Atwater, this episode focuses on what children themselves reported after surviving life-threatening events such as drowning, cardiac arrest, and severe illness. In case after case, children described leaving their physical bodies with little distress and observing medical resuscitation efforts from an external vantage point. Several accounts included accurate descriptions of hospital rooms, procedures, or family members’ actions during periods when the child was clinically unresponsive. These observations were later corroborated by medical staff or parents. Beyond out-of-body perception, many children reported entering environments characterized by intense light, vivid landscapes, or a sense of peace and safety. Unlike adult accounts, children rarely described judgment, life reviews, or moral evaluation. Instead, their experiences emphasized belonging, familiarity, and unconditional acceptance. Morse noted that children often struggled to describe the light they encountered, insisting it was not merely visual but relational, something that “knew” them. Some of the most striking cases involved children encountering deceased relatives they had never consciously known. In multiple documented instances, children identified grandparents or siblings who had died before they were born, later recognizing them in photographs. These encounters were described casually, without surprise, as if meeting someone expected. The episode also examines what happened after children returned. Long-term follow-up interviews revealed consistent aftereffects: reduced fear of death, heightened empathy, and an increased sensitivity to others’ emotions. Many children spoke calmly about dying and, in some cases, reassured adults during later illnesses or family crises. These statements were framed not as beliefs, but as memories. Importantly, the children themselves did not question the reality of their experiences. Years later, many maintained that what happened was not a dream or hallucination. This certainty was typically quiet and private, shaping their outlook without becoming performative or doctrinal. By focusing on named cases preserved in published research and presentations associated with the International Association for Near-Death Studies, this episode avoids speculation and instead centers on testimony. Children do not offer explanations for what they experienced. They simply describe where they went, and insist that it was real. https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/ https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlife My book 'Verified Near Death Experiences'  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
