Description

Welcome to the Old Mates, New Laughs Podcast page – a place for those of us who grew up in the 80s, survived the 90s, and are now wondering how the hell we got to middle age so fast! We’ve been mates for 40 years, which means we’ve seen it all – from dodgy 80s haircuts and 90s Britpop, to the joys (and struggles) of being responsible adults (sort of). Our podcast is all about looking back, laughing at ourselves, and figuring out how we got here. Expect nostalgia, bad jokes, and a healthy dose of sarcasm! We know that our podcast is nothing without it's listeners, and this is where you come in: Reminisce – Share your favourite memories from growing up in the best decades. What were your favourite kids TV shows? What toys did you play with? Debate – Whether Blur or Oasis was better (or if you were too cool for both) Laugh – At the stuff we all thought was normal back then Relate – To the joys and disasters of hitting middle age So, if you remember life before the internet, still miss Woolworths, and wonder how we’re now old enough for back pain… you’re in the right place! #OldMatesNewLaughs #80sKids #90sTeens #MiddleAgeMadness #PodcastCommunity 📲 Connect with the Podcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572709568634Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldmatesnewlaughs/Twitter/X: https://x.com/OMNLpodcastBlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/oldmatesnewlaughs.bsky.social Hosted on Acast. Fighting Fantasy #12 - Space Assassin (Part 2)
2026/10/15
This week on OMNL we're back aboard our Fighting Fantasy adventure as Space Assassin continues! In Part One, we set off on our mission, and now it's time to discover what lies ahead as we venture further into this sci-fi world. The dice are ready, the decisions are ours to make, and the consequences are entirely our own fault. Will we make clever choices now that we have already died once in the vacuum of space, and stay one step ahead of danger from now on, or will we find another spectacular way to sabotage our own mission? Join us for Part Two of our Space Assassin playthrough as we continue the adventure and edge closer to the finale. There's still a long way to go, and in Fighting Fantasy, reaching this far is no guarantee we'll make it to the end! Fighting Fantasy #12 - Space Assassin (Part 1)
2026/10/08
This week on Old Mates New Laughs, we're back with another Fighting Fantasy adventure! This time we're tackling Space Assassin, Book 12 in the legendary Fighting Fantasy gamebook series. We're leaving the dungeons and fantasy worlds behind and heading into a science-fiction adventure packed with danger, mystery and some very questionable decisions. In the first instalment of this adventure, we'll be rolling our stats, getting our head around some new combat rules, making mountains out of molehills, and trying to survive whatever the book throws at us. Will our experience from previous adventures help us out, or are we about to discover that space is just as dangerous as any dungeon? This is Part One of our three-part playthrough, so join us as we begin our latest adventure. Grab a coffee (other beverages are perfectly fine too), prepare for launch and find out whether we're destined for intergalactic glory or a very early appointment with the afterlife! 2026/10/01
This week on Old Mates New Laughs, we're looking back at our adventures through the first five Fighting Fantasy books! From The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Citadel of Chaos to Forest of Doom, Starship Traveller and City of Thieves, we're revisiting the adventures we've tackled together. We're talking about our favourite moments, biggest disasters, dodgy decisions, memorable encounters and, of course, the deaths that probably could have been avoided if we'd just made slightly better choices! After everything we've been through, we're looking back at our first five Fighting Fantasy playthroughs and deciding which adventure gave us the most fun, the biggest laughs and the best memories. It's time for the final instalment of our Fighting Fantasy adventure! After two episodes of dice rolls, dangerous encounters, questionable decisions and somehow managing to stay alive, we're finally reaching the conclusion of Talisman of Death. Everything has been building towards this moment, and now there's only one question left to answer: can we actually make it to the end? With the adventure reaching its climax, every decision matters and there is absolutely no guarantee that we'll get the heroic ending we're hoping for! So join us for the final chapter of Talisman of Death as we find out how our adventure ends. Fighting Fantasy #11 - Talisman of Death (Part 2)
2026/09/17
We're back with the second instalment of our Fighting Fantasy adventure through Talisman of Death. After everything that happened in Part One, there's no turning back now — we're deeper into the adventure, the danger is increasing and every decision could have serious consequences. Once again, we'll be rolling the dice, facing strange encounters and trying to work out which choices are going to keep us alive. The adventure continues here on Old Mates New Laughs, but we're still a long way from safety. So join us for Part Two of Talisman of Death and find out whether we can keep the adventure alive... or whether the book finally decides that we've had enough! 80s Movie Soundtracks – Turn It Up!
2026/09/03
This week on Old Mates New Laughs, we're heading back to the 1980s to celebrate the movie soundtracks that became just as memorable as the films themselves. From Eye of the Tiger and Danger Zone to The Power of Love, Footloose and Don't You (Forget About Me), we're taking a trip down memory lane and remembering the songs that defined our childhood. We're discussing our favourite '80s soundtracks, the best original songs, our first soundtrack memories, the most iconic music moments, the ultimate songs to blast in the car and, of course, the cheesiest songs the decade had to offer. We'll also be digging into some lesser-known soundtrack gems and asking whether some of the big hitters are actually a little overrated! And then comes the big question... was the 1980s the greatest decade ever for movie soundtracks? Expect plenty of nostalgia, plenty of music, a few controversial choices and, inevitably, a Rocky montage or two! 🎧 If you enjoy what we do and want to help us grow — including our goal of becoming a visual, on-camera podcast — you can now support us via Ko-Fi (totally optional, massively appreciated), here's the link should you feel inclined... https://ko-fi.com/oldmatesnewlaughs Hosted on Acast. ThunderCats – Ho!
2026/08/27
Thunder... Thunder... ThunderCats... Ho! This week on Old Mates New Laughs, we're taking a trip back to Third Earth as we celebrate one of the defining cartoons of the 1980s. We chat about our first memories of watching ThunderCats, our favourite heroes, villains and episodes, the unforgettable weapons and gadgets, and why the series has remained so popular more than forty years after it first aired. We'll also discuss the 2011 reboot, whether it's time for another revival, and end with a bit of fun by casting our dream live-action ThunderCats movie. If you grew up pretending a stick was the Sword of Omens or shouting "ThunderCats, Ho!" around the house, this one's for you. Premier League 2026/27 Predictions
2026/08/20
The Premier League is back... and so are our annual predictions! In this week's episode of Old Mates New Laughs, we're putting our football knowledge—and our reputations—on the line as we predict how the 2026/27 Premier League season will finish. We'll be working our way through all 20 clubs, discussing the biggest summer transfers, new managers, title contenders, European hopefuls, relegation candidates, and the teams we think could surprise everyone this season. Can Arsenal defend their crown? Will Liverpool mount any challenge under Iraola? Is this the year Tottenham finally claw their back into the top half of the table? How will Man City fare without Pep at the helm for the first time in a decade? How many managers will Nottingham Forest get through this season? And can the promoted clubs avoid an immediate return to the Championship, ala Sunderland last year? We'll no doubt make a few bold predictions, disagree with each other along the way, and probably say something that'll come back to haunt us in May! As always, we'd love to hear your predictions too, so let us know where you think we've got it completely wrong. 2026/07/23
This week on Old Mates New Laughs, we're heading back to Elm Street to take a deep dive into one of the most influential horror franchises of all time. From the groundbreaking original in 1984 through its many sequels, the controversial second film, the dream-powered Dream Warriors, the ambitious New Nightmare, and even the divisive 2010 remake, we're discussing everything that made Freddy Krueger a true horror icon. We chat about our first experiences watching the films, the unforgettable moments that genuinely scared us, our favourite and least favourite sequels, the most inventive kills, and the one-liners that made Freddy unlike any other slasher villain. We'll also explore how A Nightmare on Elm Street became a pop culture phenomenon, how it helped save New Line Cinema, its influence on later horror classics like Scream, and whether anyone could ever truly replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Sleepovers & Horror Films
2026/07/16
Remember when a sleepover wasn't just a night at your mate's house—it was an event? This week, the lads take a trip back to the days of staying up until the early hours, surviving on crisps, sweets and fizzy drinks, and making the all-important pilgrimage to the local video shop. The hardest decision of the night? Picking the perfect films. From horror classics that tried to terrify us to films that promised nightmares but turned out to be unintentionally hilarious, we're revisiting the movies that defined our teenage sleepovers. We also chat about the bargain bins, the films we thought we forgot, why it was important to 'be kind and rewind', and how long it took Brendan and Mike to wake Andy the following morning. So grab your favourite snack, switch the lights off (if you dare), and join us for a nostalgic trip back to some of the best nights of our youth.
