Disparities in Women’s Heart Health
2026/10/21
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death among women, but outcomes differ dramatically across racial and ethnic groups. In this episode of Heart of Prevention, host Dr. Keerthana Pakanati sits down with two leading voices in women’s cardiovascular health: Dr. LaPrincess Brewer, Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Preventive Cardiology, Mayo Clinic, and Dr. Garima Sharma, the Martha Schar Chair of Women’s Cardiovascular Health and Director of Preventive Cardiology and Women’s Cardiovascular Health at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular. Drs. Brewer and Sharma share the personal and professional experiences that drew them to this work and unpack the disparities that concern them most, from sex-specific risk enhancers to the elevated rates of pregnancy-related mortality among Black women. The conversation covers redesigning care across the pregnancy-to-postpartum continuum, the cultural and systemic barriers that shape how women recognize and seek care for cardiovascular symptoms, and how community partnerships, faith-based interventions, and digital health tools can help close long-standing gaps in care. They close with candid, rapid-fire advice for trainees and early-career clinicians on building a meaningful career in health equity. A candid, wide-ranging conversation for clinicians, researchers, and trainees who want to better understand and address the disparities shaping women’s heart health today. Vaccines and CVD Reduction: Insights from FLUNITY-HD Cardiovascular Outcomes Data
2026/09/30
Influenza is often thought of primarily as a respiratory illness—but its impact may extend well beyond the lungs. Growing evidence suggests that influenza infection can trigger cardiovascular events, while vaccination may represent an underrecognized tool in cardiovascular prevention. In this episode of The Heart of Prevention, host Dr. Keerthana Pakanati is joined by Dr. Alison Bailey to explore the evolving connection between influenza and cardiovascular disease. They discuss how influenza vaccination emerged as a potential cardiovascular prevention strategy, what we are learning from the cardiovascular analysis of FLUNITY-HD—including findings related to heart failure hospitalization—and where vaccination may fit within the broader preventive cardiology toolkit. The conversation also tackles the practical questions: Should we think about vaccines alongside statins, antihypertensives, and other preventive therapies? How should clinicians approach high-dose versus standard-dose vaccination in older adults? And what evidence do we still need to better define the role of influenza vaccination in cardiovascular prevention? Tune in for a timely conversation about infection, inflammation, vaccination, and why protecting against the flu may also mean thinking about the heart. Seeing Atherosclerosis: How Coronary Calcium Transforms Risk Assessment
2026/03/18
Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for refining cardiovascular risk assessment in asymptomatic individuals. A CAC score of zero is associated with extremely low event rates even among those with multiple risk factors, while elevated scores identify individuals who benefit most from preventive therapies. Yet despite robust evidence and guideline endorsement, CAC scoring remains underutilized in clinical practice. In this episode of "The Heart of Prevention," Dr. Michael Blaha and Dr. Khurram Nasir explore how CAC scoring transforms primary prevention from a population-based approach to truly personalized medicine. They discuss the "power of zero"—how the absence of coronary calcium can safely defer or avoid certain preventive therapies—and how elevated scores guide intensification of treatment, from statins to aspirin and beyond. The Menopause Transition: A Critical Window for Cardiovascular Prevention
2026/02/25
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet the menopause transition—a critical period when cardiovascular risk accelerates—remains an underrecognized opportunity for prevention. The menopause transition is associated with central fat accumulation, insulin resistance, atherogenic lipid changes, and increased blood pressure—all of which contribute to accelerated atherosclerosis. Women with premature menopause face particularly heightened cardiovascular risk.  Dr. Lily Dastmalchi and Dr. Emily Lau discuss how clinicians can identify at-risk women through comprehensive cardiovascular risk stratification, including assessment of traditional risk factors and female-specific risk enhancers such as premature menopause and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
