Public sentiment about the census has shifted in large part from national pride to cynicism, skepticism and distrust. That figure checks out: it comes from IPA research showing government spending across federal, state and local levels hit a record 28% of GDP in FY2023-24, up from 21% a decade earlier. Separately, Alexander Downer made a different point about jobs specifically — that around 80% of new jobs created recently have come from the public sector or public-dependent sectors — and that one checks out too, backed by Ai Group's analysis of 2024 ABS data.

In this week's episode of The Rustic Spirits Podcast we talk about the unusual coincidence of world-wide major events and how if it were just one thing - we (and our governments) may be able to weather the storm, but the costs keep rising, the tensions keep escalating and the possible scenarios don't leave us with a lot of confidence in our government(s) to see us through. So we're making sure we're doing what we can, with what we have - NOW - to be ready for anything.

If you've been paying close attention to the news lately it feels eerily like the eye of the storm this last week or so. Perhaps we've just built up a "crisis media tolerance" to the point now where unless there's bombs dropping or robots marching into factories to steal human jobs, we're not affected. But that's actually highlighted something really important to us here on our Homestead - we didn't start to develop a resilience and self-sufficiency mindset ad way of life in response to all that drama - we were doing it anyway because it just makes good sense.
