How Were People Saved in the Old Testament?
2026/09/30
How were people saved before Jesus came to earth—and could Abraham actually be called a Christian? Abraham believed God, and his faith was counted as righteousness. But how could he be saved through Jesus when Christ’s death and resurrection were still centuries away? Were Old Testament believers saved by keeping the law, offering sacrifices, or trusting in the Messiah God had promised? In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben explore salvation in the Old Testament and explain why there has always been one way to be saved. They examine Abraham’s faith, God’s eternal plan of redemption, and the work of the Holy Spirit before Pentecost. They also discuss why the sacrificial system pointed forward to Jesus rather than providing salvation on its own. So, were Abraham, Moses, and David saved differently—or did they trust the same Savior we do today? Discover: How people were saved in the Old TestamentWhy Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben describe Abraham as a ChristianWhat it means that Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousnessHow Old Testament believers trusted in the promised MessiahWhy animal sacrifices could never take away sinHow the Holy Spirit worked in believers before PentecostWhat changed with the coming of Jesus and the New Covenant Key Passages: Genesis 3:15 • Genesis 15:6 • Romans 4:17–21 • Galatians 3:8 • John 8:56 • Hebrews 11:8–16 • John 4:21–24 • Psalm 50 The question of salvation before Jesus points to the unity of God’s redemptive plan. Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben explain how Old Testament believers looked forward to the promised Messiah, while believers today look back to His finished work—the same Savior at the center of both. 👉 Subscribe for more theology (and a lot more fun). 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts Listen on Apple Podcasts – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/theology-is-fun/id1808965100 Listen on Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/4EZUfXCbWCbSs6VpbAYSEb Follow Corey Abney on Instagram https://instagram.com/corey.abney Follow Ben Skaug on Instagram https://instagram.com/ben.skaug Learn more about Bell Shoals Church https://instagram.com/bellshoals Watch full sermons from Dr. Corey Abney https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLbG1nVw0Ymu2gj1-OkB9WyX9vgWaOtot #TheologyIsFun #OldTestament #Salvation #Abraham #JesusChrist #ChristianTheology #BibleStudy
Melchizedek: A Man, an Angel, or Jesus?
2026/09/23
Was Melchizedek a mysterious king and priest—or was he actually an appearance of Jesus before His birth? Melchizedek appears briefly in Genesis 14, where he blesses Abraham and receives a tenth of the spoils. Yet centuries later, Psalm 110 and the book of Hebrews return to him to explain something essential about Jesus. Why does this seemingly minor figure matter so much? In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben examine the different views of Melchizedek, including the idea that he was a preincarnate appearance of Christ. They look at his missing genealogy, his roles as both king and priest, and the way Hebrews uses his encounter with Abraham to show that Jesus belongs to a greater and lasting priesthood. So, was Melchizedek Jesus—or was he a real person whose life pointed forward to Him? Discover: Who Melchizedek was in Genesis 14Why Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoilsWhat Hebrews means when it says he had no recorded father, mother, or genealogyWhether Melchizedek could have been an appearance of JesusWhy his priesthood matters more than the Levitical priesthoodHow Melchizedek points to Jesus as both King and PriestWhether the bread and wine in Genesis 14 point forward to the Lord’s Supper Key Passages: Genesis 14:18–20 • Psalm 110:4 • Hebrews 5:5–10 • Hebrews 6:19–20 • Hebrews 7 The mystery of Melchizedek leads to a bigger question: What does his story reveal about Jesus? Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben explain why Hebrews looks back to this ancient king and priest to help us understand Christ’s eternal priesthood. 👉 Subscribe for more theology (and a lot more fun). 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts Listen on Apple Podcasts – podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/theology-is-fun/id1808965100 Listen on Spotify – open.spotify.com/show/4EZUfXCbWCbSs6VpbAYSEb Follow Corey Abney on Instagram instagram.com/corey.abney Follow Ben Skaug on Instagram instagram.com/ben.skaug Learn more about Bell Shoals Church instagram.com/bellshoals Watch full sermons from Dr. Corey Abney https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLbG1nVw0Ymu2gj1-OkB9WyX9vgWaOtot #TheologyIsFun #Melchizedek #JesusChrist #Hebrews7 #ChristianTheology #BibleStudy
You’ve Been Reading David and Goliath Wrong
2026/09/16
Is David and Goliath really a story about facing the “giants” in your life? It’s one of the most familiar stories in the Bible—and one of the most common applications is simple: Be like David. Have courage. Trust God. Grab your five smooth stones and go defeat your giant. But is that actually the point of 1 Samuel 17? In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben take a closer look at David and Goliath and the larger biblical story surrounding this famous battle. They unpack the failure of Saul, the anointing of David, and why David’s victory over Goliath is about much more than overcoming obstacles. They also trace the imagery of the victorious champion back to Genesis 3:15 and forward to Jesus Christ—the greater King who ultimately defeats sin, death, and Satan. So, are you supposed to see yourself as David—or is David pointing us to someone greater? Discover: Why David and Goliath isn’t primarily about “facing your giants”Why Israel wanted a king—and what went wrong with SaulThe significance of David being God’s anointed kingHow David’s victory connects to the promise of Genesis 3:15Why crushing Goliath’s head matters to the larger biblical storyHow David, Samson, and Solomon point forward to ChristWhy Jesus is the greater King and ultimate ChampionHow the story of David and Goliath should actually shape the way Christians face trials Key Passages: 1 Samuel 8 • 1 Samuel 16–17 • Genesis 3:15 • Genesis 49 • Judges 16 • 2 Samuel 7 • Matthew 3–4 The point of David and Goliath isn’t that you need to become David and defeat every giant in your life. It’s that we can trust the God who keeps His promises—and the Champion He has provided for His people. Corey Abney https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLbG1nVw0Ymu2gj1-OkB9WyX9vgWaOtot #TheologyIsFun #DavidAndGoliath #JesusChrist #ChristianTheology #BibleStudy #BiblicalTheology
Jesus's Body wasn't Broken
2026/09/09
Was Jesus’ body actually “broken” for us? It’s a phrase Christians often hear in worship songs, sermons, and during the Lord’s Supper: “His body was broken for you.” But is that actually what Scripture says? In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben take a closer look at 1 Corinthians 11:24 and the biblical imagery behind Communion. They unpack an important distinction: Scripture describes the bread as broken, while Jesus says of His body, “This is My body, which is for you.” They also explore why John specifically emphasizes that none of Jesus’ bones were broken, connecting His crucifixion to the Old Testament Passover Lamb. So, are we just splitting theological hairs—or does the language we use actually matter? Discover: Why Christians commonly say Jesus’ body was “broken”What 1 Corinthians 11:24 actually saysWhy some Bible translations include the word “broken”How Jesus fulfills the imagery of the Passover LambWhat the bread and wine represent in the Lord’s SupperWhy Christ’s righteousness and our participation in His sacrifice matterHow greater biblical clarity can deepen our understanding of Communion Key Passages: 1 Corinthians 11 • John 6 • John 10 • John 19 • Exodus 12 • Exodus 16 • Numbers 9 • Isaiah 53 The symbols of the Lord’s Supper matter—and understanding what they point to gives us a clearer picture of what Christ accomplished for us on the cross.
What Is the Difference Between God’s Grace and Mercy?
2026/09/02
What does it actually mean when the Bible says that God is gracious and merciful? We often talk about God’s grace and mercy as things He gives us—but they aren’t simply things God does. They flow from who He is. In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben unpack what Scripture reveals about the grace, mercy, compassion, and patience of God—and why understanding these attributes changes the way we understand salvation. They explore the difference between grace and mercy, common grace and saving grace, and why God never owes us either one. Then the conversation turns to salvation: Are we brought to a neutral place where we choose God for ourselves, or is even our faith a result of God’s gracious work in us? Looking at Ephesians 2, they discuss regeneration, free will, faith, and what it really means to be saved by grace through faith. Discover: The difference between God’s grace and mercyWhy grace is something God gives that we could never earnThe difference between common grace and saving graceWhether God gives grace and mercy equally to everyoneWhat Ephesians 2 teaches about faith and salvationHow regeneration relates to our response to the gospelWhy God’s grace, mercy, compassion, and patience work together God’s grace isn’t something we earn, deserve, or contribute to. In Christ, God mercifully withholds the judgment we deserve and graciously gives us the righteousness Jesus earned through perfect obedience. 📖 Ephesians 2 • Genesis 3 • Romans 8 • Acts 17 • Galatians 3–4 👉 Subscribe for more theology (and a lot more fun). 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts Listen on Apple Podcasts – podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/theology-is-fun/id1808965100 Listen on Spotify – open.spotify.com/show/4EZUfXCbWCbSs6VpbAYSEb Follow Corey Abney on Instagram instagram.com/corey.abney Follow Ben Skaug on Instagram instagram.com/ben.skaug Learn more about Bell Shoals Church instagram.com/bellshoals Watch full sermons from Dr. Corey Abney https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLbG1nVw0Ymu2gj1-OkB9WyX9vgWaOtot #TheologyIsFun #GraceOfGod #MercyOfGod #ChristianTheology #BibleStudy #SavedByGrace #ChristianPodcast
What Does It Mean That God Is Holy?
2026/08/26
What does it actually mean when the Bible says that God is holy? We often describe holiness as being “set apart”—but God’s holiness goes much deeper than simply being different. In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben unpack what Scripture reveals about the holiness of God and why the angels surrounding His throne cry out, “Holy, holy, holy.” They explore God’s majestic holiness, moral holiness, and gracious holiness—and how each helps us better understand who God is. They also discuss why holiness isn’t necessarily God’s “most important” attribute, but instead works perfectly alongside His love, justice, wrath, and every other attribute. Then the conversation turns practical: If God alone is perfectly holy, what does He mean when He commands us to “Be holy, because I am holy”? Discover: What it actually means for God to be holyWhy Scripture describes God as “Holy, holy, holy”The difference between majestic, moral, and gracious holinessWhy being holy means more than simply being “set apart”How God makes sinful people holy through Jesus ChristWhat sanctification and spiritual disciplines have to do with growing in holiness God’s holiness doesn’t mean He is simply a better version of us. He is altogether different—and through Christ, He is transforming His people to reflect His holy character. 📖 Isaiah 6 • Leviticus 19 • 1 Peter 1 👉 Subscribe for more theology (and a lot more fun). 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts. Can God Change His Mind? Understanding the Immutability of God
2026/08/19
Does God change His mind? Scripture tells us that God does not change. But what do we do with passages where God appears to change His mind or “relent”? In this episode, Dr. Ben and Pastor Steven unpack the doctrine of God’s immutability and why His unchanging nature is essential to understanding who He is. Then, the conversation turns to passages like Jonah 3, where God relents from the judgment He announced against Nineveh after the people turn from their evil ways. They explore how these passages fit with Scripture’s clear teaching that God does not change—and why a change in God’s actions does not necessarily mean a change in God’s character, nature, or purposes. Discover: What does it mean that God is unchanging? Can God change His mind? Why Numbers 23 says God is not like manWhat it means when Scripture says God “relented”How Jonah 3 fits with the doctrine of God’s immutabilityThe difference between God changing and His response to people changingWhy God’s unchanging character gives believers confidence in His promises Key Passages: Malachi 3:6 • Numbers 23:19 • Jonah 3:10 Does God change His mind? God Is Love—But Does He Love Everyone Equally?
2026/08/13
Does God love everyone equally? It’s one of the most common assumptions about the love of God—but is that actually what Scripture teaches? In this episode, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben unpack what the Bible means when it says, “God is love” and why understanding God’s love begins with God Himself, not our own definition of love. Then, the conversation turns to the different ways Scripture describes God’s love—from His general love for creation to His covenant love for His people in Christ. They explore how God’s love relates to His holiness, justice, wrath, and judgment, and why none of God’s attributes are ever in conflict. Discover: Does God love everyone equally? What does “God is love” actually mean? The difference between God’s love for creation and His covenant loveWhy God’s love and His judgment are not in conflictHow Jesus Christ reveals the love of GodWhat God’s unchanging love means for our assurance of salvationHow understanding God’s love changes the way we love others and our enemies Key Passages: John 3:16 • 1 John 4 • Ephesians 1 • John 15 Does God love everyone equally? Why God Is the Center of Everything (And Why Nothing Else Satisfies)
2026/07/01
Who is God, really? And why does understanding His nature matter? In this episode of Theology Is Fun, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben continue their series on the doctrine of God by exploring some of His most foundational attributes. They discuss what it means for God to be the Fountain of Living Waters, why He is completely self-sufficient, and how nothing in creation can add to or diminish His glory. The conversation also examines the relationship between God's transcendence and His nearness, showing how the Creator of the universe is both infinitely above His creation and intimately present with His people. Finally, they explain why Jesus Christ is the clearest and fullest revelation of God, revealing His glory, grace, truth, and character to the world. Together they explore: Why God alone is the Fountain of Living WatersHow idolatry replaces God with broken cisternsWhat it means that God is self-sufficient and unchangingWhy God's love does not increase or decreaseGod's transcendence and His nearness to His peopleHow Jesus perfectly reveals the FatherWhy all creation exists for the glory of ChristWhy God is rightfully the center of all things Whether you're new to theology or looking to deepen your understanding of God's character, this episode provides a practical and biblical foundation for seeing God as He has revealed Himself in Scripture. 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts. 2026/06/24
In this episode of Theology Is Fun, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben begin a new series on one of the most foundational subjects in Christian theology: the doctrine of God. They explore who God is in Himself, why theology must begin with God rather than man, and what it means that God is eternal, self-existent, and completely independent of creation. Along the way, they discuss God's aseity, His infinite perfection, and why understanding God's nature transforms the way we think about worship, salvation, and the Christian life. Can Someone Be Saved Without a Bible?
2026/06/17
In this episode of Theology Is Fun, Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben continue their discussion on how God reveals Himself by turning from general revelation to special revelation—God's direct self-disclosure through Scripture. They explore why creation and conscience reveal God's existence but cannot save, why the gospel is necessary for salvation, and why Christians believe the Bible is God's inspired, authoritative, and trustworthy Word. Along the way, they discuss inspiration, inerrancy, biblical authority, manuscript reliability, and why God's Word continues to transform lives today. Together they explore: The difference between general revelation and special revelationWhy creation and conscience are not enough for salvationThe necessity of the gospel for saving faithWhat Christians mean by the inspiration of ScriptureVerbal plenary inspiration explainedBiblical inerrancy and manuscript reliabilityWhy the Bible is authoritative for faith and practiceThe unity of Scripture across centuries and authorsHow God's Word accomplishes His purposesThe role of humility in receiving God's revelation The conversation also tackles important questions such as: Can someone be saved without owning a Bible?Does God owe special revelation to everyone? How can the Bible be God's Word if it was written by human authors? Are there contradictions in Scripture? Why should Christians trust the reliability of the Bible we have today? Dr. Corey and Dr. Ben explain these foundational doctrines in a practical and accessible way while showing why God's special revelation in Scripture remains central to the Christian faith. If you've ever wondered: 👉 "What is special revelation?" 👉 "Why do Christians believe the Bible is inspired?" 👉 "Can creation alone lead someone to salvation?" 👉 "What does biblical inerrancy mean?" 👉 "How do we know the Bible is trustworthy?" —this episode is for you. 👍 Like, subscribe, and drop your questions in the comments. 🎧 Available wherever you listen to podcasts.
