Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 5, Episode 2 | Guest: Diksha S. — The Animals We Rescue, and the Humanity We Rediscover
2026/10/23
TAILS OF HOPE | Season 5, Episode 2 | Diksha S. — The Animals We Rescue, and the Humanity We Rediscover
What if the animals we try to save are also teaching us how to become more human? 🐾
Behind every animal rescue lies a story of compassion, difficult decisions, financial struggles, emotional exhaustion, and extraordinary resilience. Behind every injured street dog, abandoned animal, and desperate call for veterinary help is someone choosing not to look away.
In Season 5, Episode 2 of TAILS OF HOPE, host Anil Narain Mataiwelcomes Diksha S., an animal welfare advocate from Bengaluru whose journey since 2019 has involved street animal feeding, rescues, veterinary assistance, and community action.
This conversation goes beyond rescue stories to explore what it truly means to coexist with animals and take responsibility for their well-being.
🐾 DO WE TRULY UNDERSTAND THE EMOTIONAL WORLD OF ANIMALS?
Working with animals can transform how we understand love, resilience, trust, and emotional intelligence. What can the lives of animals teach us about compassion and the beings society too often overlooks?
🐾 ARE WE SOLVING THE PROBLEM OR JUST RESPONDING TO THE CRISIS?
When rescue calls never stop, veterinary bills accumulate, and NGOs struggle to accommodate another animal, we must ask: are we addressing the roots of suffering, or merely responding to its consequences?
🐾 WHO CARES FOR THE ANIMALS NOBODY WANTS?
What happens to animals that are blind, disabled, elderly, severely injured, or considered difficult to adopt? We explore the challenges of long-term care, rehabilitation, and the difficult decisions that arise when an animal is suffering.
🐾 CAN HUNGER, FEAR, AND NEGLECT SHAPE A DOG'S BEHAVIOUR?
An example of a dog displaying aggression after experiencing hunger, attacks, and abandonment invites us to look beyond labels. Before judging an animal's behaviour, should we first understand the circumstances that shaped it?
🐾 WHAT DOES RESPONSIBLE FEEDING REALLY MEAN?
Compassion requires more than good intentions. Feeding community animals responsibly, understanding their needs, and encouraging peaceful coexistence are essential parts of building safer, kinder neighbourhoods.
🐾 THE HIDDEN COST OF BEING A RESCUER
Behind every successful rescue may be financial pressure, emotional burnout, threats, community disputes, and the struggle to find support. This episode highlights the importance of support networks, NGOs, and people willing to stand alongside those who dedicate themselves to animal welfare.
💚 THE MESSAGE: SHOW UP, EVEN WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT.
You do not have to rescue every animal yourself. Arrange veterinary assistance, support a trusted rescuer, feed responsibly, connect an animal with an NGO, or help raise awareness.
Sometimes, one small act of kindness becomes the beginning of meaningful change.

Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 5, Episode 1 | Guest: Saurabh Bhatnagar, the founder of HiPaws
2026/10/16
From IT Corporate Life to Full-Time Animal Rescue: Saurabh Bhatnagar’s Inspiring Journey | Tails of Hope
What does it take to walk away from a comfortable IT career, an AC cabin, and international exposure to dedicate your entire life to the ignored souls of the streets? In this powerful episode of the Tails of Hope Podcast, host Anil Narain Matai sits down with Saurabh Bhatnagar, the founder of HiPaws—a dedicated Delhi-based NGO operating in Northern India that fights daily to give sick, injured, and abandoned dogs a second chance at life.
This conversation dives deep into the raw, unspoken reality of animal welfare in India. Saurabh opens up about his personal turning point, the heavy emotional and physical tolls of rescue work, and why compassion without action is simply not enough.
🚨 Key Highlights & Timestamps from the Episode:
The Corporate Exit & The Calling: Saurabh shares what happened inside him after 13 years in the IT industry and a life-changing moment involving a puppy stuck in a drain that made him leave the rat race behind.
Beyond the Rescue Photograph: Society loves the dramatic rescue video, but what happens after the cameras turn off? Saurabh discusses the grueling reality of years of physiotherapy, medical care, and why special-needs dogs rarely have a "happily ever after".
The Stories of Zara & Butter: Unpacking the painful truth of how animals are discarded when they are no longer deemed "useful" for breeding, guarding, or status.
Compassion Fatigue & The Rescuer's Reality: Who takes care of the rescuer when the emotional toll, trauma, and financial burdens become overwhelming?
The Myth of NGO Wealth: Saurabh breaks down the harsh truths about government funding, soaring veterinary bills, infrastructure maintenance, and why corporates need to invest in ideas rather than viewing animal welfare as mere charity.
Humane Coexistence & The Next Generation: Why animal education needs to be part of school syllabi, how children learn empathy from their parents, and how we can build a more compassionate tomorrow for community dogs.
🐾 Support HiPaws & The Mission:HiPaws is currently facing a massive transition as their rental agreement for their recovery home comes to an end. They need to secure a new space and rebuild everything from scratch to continue sheltering paralyzed, blind, amputee, cancer-affected, and senior dogs who rely entirely on their care.
As Saurabh shares, the founders take zero salaries from HiPaws; every contribution goes directly toward veterinary bills, food, medicines, and the dedicated caretakers (like Vishal and Kishan) who show up rain or shine for over 450 dogs.
Help HiPaws Rebuild:Connect with HiPaws: Reach out directly to support their upcoming sanctuary transition, sponsor a special-needs dog, or volunteer your time.

Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 4, Episode 12 | Guest: Brenn Clark, a One Health and Veterinary Social Work professional
2026/10/09
🐾 TAILS OF HOPE — SEASON 4, EPISODE 12
Who takes care of the people who spend their lives taking care of animals?
On this episode of Tails of Hope – Voices for the Voiceless, Hope for Every Paw, we welcome Brenn Clark, a One Health and Veterinary Social Work professional exploring one of the most overlooked dimensions of animal welfare—the wellbeing of the humans who care for animals.
With a background in Animal Health Sciences and a deep connection to veterinary medicine, animal caregivers and the human–animal bond, Brenn's work asks us to look beyond the animal in front of us and understand the entire relationship surrounding them.
Brenn explains that her journey into social work wasn't the result of one defining moment, but rather “hundreds of micro moments” accumulated over the years.
Through veterinary settings, animal care, personal experiences of companion animal loss and supporting others through grief, she began recognising something important:
There are vulnerable experiences at the human–animal intersection that often don't receive the care, time or validation they deserve.
That realisation led her toward Veterinary Social Work.
In this deeply honest conversation, Brenn takes us behind the doors of veterinary clinics and animal-care environments—places often imagined from the outside as spaces filled with puppies, kindness and happy endings.
The reality can be very different.
Difficult diagnoses.
Trauma.
Death.
Moral distress.
Grief.
Emotionally charged decisions.
And the exhaustion of moving from one difficult experience directly into another.
We explore compassion fatigue, including secondary or vicarious trauma and burnout, and some of the warning signs that caregivers may overlook—including emotional exhaustion, cognitive drain and feeling unable to recover simply through rest.
But this isn't a conversation about exhaustion alone.
It is about wholeness.
Brenn challenges the way society often minimises the grief that follows the loss of an animal companion. She explores ideas such as human supremacy and speciesism, and how they influence the way animal loss is recognised—or dismissed—by workplaces and society.
She reminds grieving pet parents that their loss is real, life-changing and identity-reshaping.
And perhaps most beautifully, she offers another way of understanding loss:
The relationship doesn't necessarily end. It transforms.
The conversation then expands into One Health—the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental wellbeing.
Brenn explains why the health of an animal can affect the wellbeing of their human companion, and why human wellbeing can similarly affect animals.
We also explore trauma-informed care and how recognising that both humans and animals may carry experiences we cannot see can change the way we respond to their behaviour.
Instead of asking, “What's wrong with them?”
We can begin asking:
“What might have happened to them?”
Brenn also challenges the idea that self-care is simply about taking time off and getting enough sleep.
For her, self-care is maintenance—but collective care is essential.
Our relationships with ourselves, colleagues, workplaces, clients, patients and environments can either sustain us or slowly drain us.
And her message to those working in animal care is powerful:
Your experience is real. You are not alone. Your enormous heart is beautiful—but you also deserve the support that allows you to keep it open.
For grieving pet parents, her message is equally compassionate:
Your loss matters.
This episode of Tails of Hope asks us to widen our understanding of animal welfare.
Because caring for animals also means caring for the people who care for them.
And perhaps true compassion begins when no one in the circle of care is left unseen.
🐾 A conversation about compassion fatigue, grief, veterinary social work, One Health, trauma-informed care, collective care and the deeply human—and profoundly animal—relationships that shape our lives.
Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 4, Episode 11 | Guest: Colonel Dr. Navaz Shariff, Former DIG of Police, Ministry of Home Affairs,

🐾 TAILS OF HOPE — SEASON 4, EPISODE 11
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲?
On this episode of Tails of Hope – Voices for the Voiceless, Hope for Every Paw, we welcome Colonel Dr. Navaz Shariff, Former DIG of Police, Ministry of Home Affairs, MVSc (Veterinary Medicine), NDEHMS (IVRI), Chief Wildlife Veterinarian and General Manager.
After 32 years of service in the Indian Army, Dr. Shariff continues to serve—not only animals, but the larger relationship between humans and the natural world.
Why choose wildlife when companion animals have families to care for them?
For Dr. Shariff, the answer is simple: wildlife has no owner.
In Bengaluru's urban landscape, his team has rescued tens of thousands of animals across hundreds of species—from snakes and birds to monkeys, civets, tortoises, vultures and leopards.
But behind those rescues lies a troubling reality.
Rapid urbanisation, vehicular movement, pollution, bright lights, glass buildings and the destruction of natural habitats are creating new dangers for wildlife.
Animals that once lived within their ecosystems increasingly find themselves navigating ours.
And when that encounter goes wrong, wildlife hospitals become the bridge between injury and survival.
Dr. Shariff takes us inside that world, explaining why physical healing is only half the journey. An animal may recover from a fracture or wound, but still need to regain the natural behaviours and confidence required to survive independently.
The ultimate goal isn't captivity. It is return.
Few moments, Dr. Shariff says, compare with opening a cage and watching a bird fly away, seeing a monkey disappear into the forest, or releasing a snake back into its natural environment.
That moment of release becomes a reminder of why the work continues.
We also explore one of the most misunderstood creatures in urban India—the snake.
Dr. Shariff explains why snakes generally do not seek conflict with humans, why fear often comes from misunderstanding, and why education may be one of the most powerful tools in wildlife conservation.
But this conversation goes beyond individual species.
He speaks about urban expansion, changing rescue patterns, climate pressures and the need to design cities where wildlife has space to move.
Cities need wildlife too.
And coexistence cannot happen by accident. It requires planning, understanding, education and a willingness to recognise that humans are not separate from nature.
Perhaps the deepest message of this conversation comes towards the end.
Dr. Shariff hopes future generations will inherit a world where people and wildlife coexist with respect and compassion.
He believes wildlife hospitals should become essential community infrastructure, with more rescue centres, greater public participation and more opportunities for people to volunteer and learn.
Because conservation cannot remain the responsibility of a handful of dedicated organisations.
It must become a shared responsibility.
And then comes his most powerful reflection:
“Humans are not separate from nature. We are a part of it.”
When we heal a wild animal, we are not simply treating a patient.
We are acknowledging the habitat we have taken away.
We are trying to restore something we have damaged.
And perhaps, in doing so, we are also protecting ourselves.

In this episode of Tails of Hope – Voices for the Voiceless, Hope for Every Paw, we welcome Dr. Amy Shroff, veterinarian, Founder & President of Let's Save The Strays International, and an advocate for animals who often have nowhere else to turn.
With more than three decades of experience in veterinary medicine and animal welfare, Amy's journey takes us from running a large 24/7 veterinary specialty hospital in Massachusetts to working to bring veterinary care, education and compassion to free-roaming animals and communities around the world.
Amy shares a deeply personal part of her journey.
After years of building and running a sophisticated veterinary practice, she began asking herself a difficult question:
“𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁?”
She had created something substantial, but she realised that the animals receiving that level of specialised care represented only one part of the population.
What about the animals who had no access to veterinary care at all?
Selling her practice in 2013 gave Amy the freedom to explore a different kind of purpose—taking what she had learned from emergency and critical care and applying that knowledge where the need was greatest.
Her journey eventually led her to 𝗠𝘆𝗮𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗿, and to the creation of Let's Save The Strays International.
In our conversation, Amy talks about why dogs and cats became the focus of her work, her experiences volunteering with elephants in Thailand, and her involvement with the documentary **Gods and Shackles**.
But at the centre of everything is a simple belief:
𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲.
We also talk about something that can sometimes get lost in conversations about animal welfare—the importance of looking beyond individual rescue cases and thinking about the larger picture.
Amy's goal isn't simply to save one, two or three animals.
She hopes to help 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲-𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀.
That means building local capacity, supporting teams on the ground, providing veterinary care and helping communities develop solutions they can eventually champion themselves.
And when asked what one simple act of kindness people could offer an animal before the day ends, her answer is beautifully uncomplicated:
𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿. 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆. 𝗔 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺.
Sometimes compassion doesn't require extraordinary resources.
Sometimes it begins with a bowl of fresh water.
Amy's message is ultimately about participation.
There are animals in every community who need someone to notice them.
Someone to offer help.
Someone willing to rally others.
Someone willing to begin.
She reminds us that we don't have to solve every problem in the world to make a difference. We can start with the animals immediately around us—and from there, perhaps help create something larger.
Amy also shares the work of 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, a volunteer-driven nonprofit supporting animal welfare work in Myanmar and encouraging others around the world to create similar change where the need exists.
Because, as Amy reminds us, **sometimes animals don't need someone to save the whole world for them.**

Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 4, Episode 9 | Guest: Deb Jarrett, Founder & CEO of Dharamsala Animal Rescue (DAR)
2026/09/18
🐾 TAILS OF HOPE — SEASON 4, EPISODE 9
Sometimes, one animal can change the direction of an entire life.
In this episode of Tails of Hope – Voices for the Voiceless, Hope for Every Paw, we meet Deb Jarrett, Founder & CEO of Dharamsala Animal Rescue (DAR), working at the intersection of animal welfare, public health and community change in northern India.
Her journey began with a street dog that others had simply walked past.
That moment became a calling.
Deb shares the story of how she left behind a career in technology and business development and found herself in Dharamsala, where she began seeing the realities faced by India's street dogs.
From injured and abandoned animals to fear, misinformation and the human–street dog conflict, she quickly discovered that rescue alone could never be the complete answer.
You can rescue a dog today—but what changes tomorrow?
That question became central to her work.
We talk about rescue, sterilisation, rabies vaccination, responsible community care and, perhaps most importantly, education.
Deb explains why children and communities need to understand dog behaviour, bite prevention and rabies—and why changing attitudes towards street dogs is essential if lasting change is to happen.
But behind every programme are individual lives.
Deb opens up about the emotional side of rescue and shares the heartbreaking story of Sooraj, a much-loved dog whose journey left a lasting mark on everyone at DAR.
It is a reminder that rescuers don't simply manage cases.
They form bonds. They hope. They grieve. And sometimes, they carry the memory of the animals they could not save.
Yet Deb's story is ultimately one of hope.
She shares examples of people whose attitudes towards street dogs changed through greater understanding and experience—including someone who eventually welcomed a dog into his own life.
Because perhaps the greatest transformation is not simply saving one animal.
It is helping a human being see that animal differently.
This conversation invites us to look beyond the idea that animal welfare is only about rescue.
It is also about prevention, education, empathy, responsibility and coexistence.
What happens when communities learn instead of fear?
What happens when children grow up understanding animals rather than fearing them?
And what happens when we stop asking only, “How many dogs can we rescue?” and begin asking, “How can we create communities where fewer dogs need rescuing?”
Deb Jarrett's journey reminds us that lasting change often begins with one small act of compassion—and grows when that compassion becomes a movement.

Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | SEASON 4, EPISODE 8 | Deborah Tripley Global Director of Campaigns and Advocacy at Compassion in World Farming.
2026/09/11
🐾 TAILS OF HOPE — SEASON 4, EPISODE 8
What if the way we produce our food is not just an animal welfare issue—but one of the biggest questions facing the future of our planet?
On this episode of Tails of Hope – Voices for the Voiceless, Hope for Every Paw, we welcome Deborah Tripley, Global Director of Campaigns and Advocacy at Compassion in World Farming.
With a background in environmental litigation, human rights activism and environmental policy, Deborah brings a perspective that takes the conversation about animals far beyond compassion alone.
Because sometimes, protecting animals means questioning the entire system that confines them.
Deborah shares how her journey began through environmental advocacy, where she witnessed the accelerating loss of wildlife, ecosystems and habitats. But as she looked deeper into the causes of that destruction, she found herself confronting a difficult reality—the enormous environmental footprint of animal agriculture and the scale of industrial farming.
Her work eventually brought together two issues that are often discussed separately: the welfare of animals and the health of our planet.
We speak about factory farming, animals kept in confinement, the resources required to produce animal feed, the environmental consequences of industrial agriculture and why Deborah believes these problems cannot be solved in isolation.
The conversation then moves into something equally important: systems change.
What needs to happen over the next decade?
Deborah discusses the importance of legislative frameworks, reducing nitrogen and fertiliser use, reducing the density and number of animals kept in confinement, supporting more nature-friendly farming practices and increasing investment in alternative proteins.
But this isn't simply a conversation about policy.
It is a conversation about responsibility.
Perhaps the most powerful part of this conversation is Deborah's refusal to surrender to cynicism.
Campaigners, she believes, need to be motivated by hope.
She speaks about the growing awareness around factory farming, changing consumer expectations and businesses beginning to recognise that sustainability and animal welfare matter.
She shares her hope that we can “end the cage age” across Europe and the UK—and that such change could create ripple effects beyond borders.
And there is something deeply human in that idea:
Change doesn't always begin when the whole world agrees. Sometimes it begins when enough people decide that the old way is no longer acceptable.
Animals cannot lobby governments.
They cannot vote.
They cannot stand before policymakers and argue for their freedom.
They cannot explain their pain in words.
So someone has to speak.
Someone has to challenge the system.
Someone has to ask whether convenience, economics and tradition should continue to outweigh the welfare of sentient beings.
Deborah leaves listeners with a remarkably direct message:
End the cage age.
Make conscious choices in your own diet. Become a more sustainable consumer. Challenge the expansion of factory farming. Stand up for animals because they cannot stand up for themselves.
This episode of Tails of Hope is not about telling you what to think.
It is about asking you to look again.
At the food on your plate.
At the systems behind it.
At the animals within those systems.
And at the kind of world we are collectively building for those who come after us.
Because hope is not passive.
Hope becomes meaningful when it moves us to act.

Founder & Owner, Petville | Pet Enthusiast | Advocate for Responsible Pet Parenting
What happens when the love you have for one dog becomes the beginning of a much bigger mission?
Sometimes, a business doesn't begin with a business plan.
Sometimes, it begins with a dog.
In Season 4, Episode 7 of Tails of Hope, we welcome Preeti Agrawal, Founder and Owner of Petville, for a warm and honest conversation about pet parenting, animal wellbeing, responsible choices, and building a pet-care ecosystem with compassion at its centre.
Preeti takes us back to 2011, when her love for her adopted dog Snowy became the inspiration behind Petville.
Like many new pet parents, she had questions about nutrition, products and providing the right care. Her experiences made her realise that pet parents needed more than a place to purchase products—they needed access to information, guidance and better choices.
That idea became Petville.
As her journey continued, Preeti's understanding of pet care evolved through conversations with pet parents, veterinarians and her own experiences with animals. She believes that learning is an ongoing journey, and that responsible pet parenting requires us to keep asking questions.
We explore how pet parenting has changed and why nutrition awareness has become increasingly important. Today's pet parents want to understand what they are feeding their dogs and cats—not simply choose products based on price or convenience.
We also discuss the changing role of companion animals in our lives. In an increasingly stressful and disconnected world, pets can become companions, sources of emotional comfort and an important part of our families.
But love also comes with responsibility.
Preeti speaks about the need for affordable veterinary care, stronger animal-welfare regulations and better protection against animal abuse. She also shares why ethics and quality should never be sacrificed simply for business growth.
Her message is simple: when animals depend upon us, our choices matter.
This episode will resonate with pet parents, animal lovers, veterinarians, entrepreneurs and anyone who believes caring for an animal is a responsibility—not simply a lifestyle choice.
In this conversation, you'll discover:
🐾 How Snowy inspired the beginning of Petville.
🐾 Why education should be part of responsible pet care.
🐾 How pet parenting has evolved.
🐾 Why understanding nutrition matters.
🐾 The emotional role pets play in modern life.
🐾 Why affordable veterinary care is essential.
🐾 The need for stronger animal-welfare laws and enforcement.
🐾 Why ethics and quality should come before easy profit.
🐾 Why learning from veterinarians and fellow pet parents never stops.
Preeti also shares her support for Mission Possible, founded by Padmini Stump, and encourages people to contribute in whatever way they can to animal welfare.
At the heart of her journey is a powerful reminder:
When we choose to care better, we create the possibility of a better life for the animals who trust us.
If you are a pet parent—or simply someone who believes animals deserve better—this is a conversation worth watching.
Join Preeti Agrawal and Anil Narain Matai on Tails of Hope – Season 4, Episode 7.
Listen to her journey. Reflect on your own approach to pet parenting. And ask yourself:
Are we giving our animals what they need—or simply what we think they need?

Tails of Hope India Podcast – Voices for the Voiceless | Animal Welfare & Advocacy | Season 4, Episode 6 [PART FINALE] | Guest: Lisa McCabe – The Dog Witch Founder, The Dog Witch
2026/08/28
🎙️ TAILS OF HOPE – Season 4, Episode 6 (Finale)
Guest: Lisa McCabe – The Dog Witch
Founder, The Dog Witch | Creator of The Happy Dog Reset | Holistic Canine Wellbeing Expert
What if the behaviour we want to change is actually a message we need to understand?
A bark. A growl. Anxiety. Reactivity. Withdrawal. Restlessness.
What if our dogs are communicating long before we realise something is wrong?
In the Season 4, Episode 6 Finale of Tails of Hope, we continue our conversation with Lisa McCabe – The Dog Witch, exploring what it really means to understand canine wellbeing rather than simply reacting to canine behaviour.
For Lisa, helping dogs isn't about finding a quick fix.
It's about looking at the whole dog.
In this finale, we go deeper into the relationship between physical health, emotional wellbeing and behaviour, and why dog guardians need to look beyond the obvious symptom.
Lisa's approach brings together the foundations of canine wellbeing—including nutrition, exercise, environment, sleep, health and behaviour—while recognising that every dog is an individual.
A dog who is anxious may need something different from a dog who is reactive.
A dog who is slowing down may be communicating discomfort.
And a dog who appears difficult may simply be overwhelmed, frightened, or struggling to cope.
The conversation also explores the importance of creating environments where dogs feel safe, understood and supported, rather than constantly expecting them to adapt to the human world around them.
We discuss the human-dog relationship and why guardians can sometimes become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of conflicting advice available today.
Lisa encourages us to step back, observe our dogs carefully, trust our instincts, and become their advocates.
The discussion also touches on practical ways guardians can support their dogs at home, including approaches that encourage relaxation, comfort and connection.
At the heart of the conversation is a powerful shift in perspective:
Don't just ask what your dog is doing. Ask why.
Whether you are living with a puppy, an adult dog, a senior companion, a rescue, or a dog struggling with anxiety or behavioural challenges, this conversation offers a valuable reminder:
There is always more to the story than what we see on the surface.

What if your dog isn't being difficult… but is trying to tell you something?
What if anxiety, reactivity, fear, or a sudden change in behaviour is not something to simply correct—but something we need to understand?
In Season 4, Episode 6 (Part 1) of Tails of Hope, we welcome Lisa McCabe, better known as The Dog Witch, for a fascinating conversation about canine wellbeing, behaviour, trust, and learning to listen to the dogs who share our lives.
Lisa's journey with dogs began in 2009, but her work evolved into something much deeper. Her experiences with individual dogs taught her that there is no single formula for wellbeing—and that sometimes we need to look beyond the behaviour we see on the surface.
One of the most powerful stories she shares is about Zane, a dog she adopted who struggled enormously with fear. What might have been labelled as difficult or problematic behaviour was, in reality, a dog who was frightened and needed to feel safe.
That experience helped reinforce one of the central ideas in Lisa's work:
Before trying to change a dog's behaviour, understand what the behaviour is communicating.
We explore Lisa's approach to the six pillars of canine wellbeing—nutrition, exercise, environment, sleep, health, and behaviour—and why these areas cannot always be considered separately.
She also shares the remarkable story of O'Malley, a dog whose early struggles required looking at multiple aspects of his wellbeing rather than searching for one simple answer. From nutrition and sleep to massage and other supportive approaches, his journey illustrates why understanding the whole dog matters.
The conversation takes us into the fascinating world of sound therapy too. As a classically trained singer, Lisa discovered that singing could have a calming effect on dogs and explains how sound can be particularly useful when working with animals who are not yet comfortable with physical contact.
We also discuss safe spaces, routine, nervous-system regulation, fear, trust, and the importance of allowing dogs to move at their own pace.
And Lisa leaves dog guardians with a message worth remembering:
Trust your gut. Listen to your dog. Become their advocate.
This conversation will resonate with anyone who has ever wondered:
Why is my dog behaving this way?
Why has my dog suddenly become reactive?
Why won't my dog settle?
What is my dog actually trying to tell me?
In Part 1, Lisa explores:
🐾 Why canine behaviour can be a form of communication.
🐾 How fear can sometimes be mistaken for "bad behaviour."
🐾 Why the whole dog—not just the symptom—needs to be considered.
🐾 The six foundations that contribute to canine wellbeing.
🐾 Why sleep, nutrition, environment and emotional wellbeing matter.
🐾 The importance of giving fearful dogs a safe space.
🐾 How trust and patience can transform the relationship between dogs and humans.
🐾 How massage and sound may provide additional supportive tools.
At its heart, this is a conversation about changing the question.
Instead of asking, "How do I stop my dog doing this?"
Perhaps we should first ask:
"What is my dog trying to tell me?"
If you share your life with a dog, this conversation may change the way you see them.
Watch Tails of Hope – Season 4, Episode 6 (Part 1) with Lisa McCabe – The Dog Witch and discover why understanding may be the first step toward helping our dogs truly thrive.

What if the greatest threat to wildlife isn't a lack of passion...
...but outdated thinking?
What if saving endangered species requires us to completely rethink the way conservation itself is approached?
In the Season 4, Episode 5 Finale of Tails of Hope, we continue our extraordinary conversation with Donalea Patman OAM, one of Australia's leading voices in wildlife conservation and ecological restoration. This episode challenges long-held assumptions and invites us to imagine a future where innovation, courage, and collaboration reshape the fate of our planet.
This is not simply a discussion about protecting wildlife.
It is a conversation about transforming the systems that determine whether wildlife survives.
Donalea shares why she believes the current conservation model is struggling to keep pace with today's extinction crisis and explains why addressing root causes is more important than treating symptoms. Drawing on years of advocacy and policy engagement, she discusses the urgent need to modernise wildlife protection, strengthen international cooperation, and rethink the way endangered species are managed across borders.
The conversation explores the challenges of illegal wildlife trafficking, the importance of improving legal trade systems to close loopholes exploited by criminal networks, and why bold, practical solutions deserve far greater global attention.
We also dive into her inspiring vision for one of the world's largest rewilding initiatives in Australia—a project designed to restore ecosystems, rebuild biodiversity, and create resilient landscapes capable of supporting future generations of wildlife.
Beyond policy and conservation, Donalea reflects on resilience, purpose, and the importance of continuing to act even when change seems overwhelming. She reminds us that meaningful progress begins when individuals commit to doing their part, without waiting for perfect circumstances.

Can one encounter with nature completely redefine the purpose of your life?
What if the answer to the world's extinction crisis begins not with better technology—but with a profound shift in human consciousness?
In Season 4, Episode 5 (Part 1) of Tails of Hope, we are honoured to welcome Donalea Patman OAM, Founder of For the Love of Wildlife and one of Australia's leading voices for wildlife conservation, rewilding, and systemic environmental change.
From a successful corporate career to becoming one of Australia's most influential wildlife advocates, Donalea's story is a remarkable reminder that purpose often finds us when we least expect it.
This is far more than a conversation about wildlife conservation.
It is a deeply personal journey into purpose, spirituality, leadership, and our responsibility to protect the living world.
Donalea shares how years in corporate communications and personal development led her to discover the philosophy of Sacred Activism—the belief that inner transformation must ultimately become compassionate action in service of the planet.
She recounts a life-changing experience during a workshop in South Africa, where a silent encounter with a magnificent white lion became the turning point that transformed admiration for nature into an unwavering commitment to protect it.
As the conversation unfolds, we explore the devastating realities of canned hunting, the growing extinction crisis, and why many of today's conservation models are struggling to reverse biodiversity loss. Donalea explains why lasting solutions require courageous leadership, innovative thinking, and the willingness to address the root causes of environmental destruction rather than merely responding to its consequences.
This episode invites us to see wildlife not as something separate from humanity, but as an essential part of the living systems that sustain us all.

Jill takes us back to the defining moment that changed everything—a visit to a bear bile farm in China in 1993. What she witnessed there would become the turning point of her life. Among rows of bears enduring unimaginable suffering, one moon bear reached through the bars of her cage and gently touched Jill's shoulder. What if the future of humanity depends on how we treat animals today?
What if the greatest challenge facing our planet isn't simply climate change—but our willingness to rethink humanity's relationship with every other living being?
In the Season 4, Episode 3 Finale of Tails of Hope, we are honoured to welcome Dr. Kenneth Shapiro, one of the world's pioneering thinkers in Human-Animal Studies. For decades, his work has bridged psychology, ethics, public policy, and education, challenging us to see animals not as resources or possessions, but as fellow inhabitants of a shared world.
This is far more than a conversation about animal welfare.
It is an invitation to rethink civilization itself.
Dr. Shapiro explores how Human-Animal Studies has evolved into an interdisciplinary field that brings together psychology, philosophy, education, law, environmental science, and public policy to better understand our relationship with other sentient beings.
The discussion moves beyond individual acts of kindness and asks bigger questions. How do our cultural beliefs shape the way we treat animals? Can education create more compassionate societies? What role should leadership and media play in changing public attitudes? And how can scientific understanding help build policies that benefit both humans and animals?
One of the most compelling moments of the conversation examines the challenges of climate change and the emerging concept of the Anthropocene—a period in which human activity has become one of the greatest forces shaping life on Earth. Dr. Shapiro explains why these global challenges present an opportunity to broaden the conversation about animal welfare into one about environmental sustainability, ethical responsibility, and our collective future.
Rather than appealing only to animal lovers, he encourages us to recognise that protecting animals is inseparable from protecting ecosystems, communities, and ultimately humanity itself.
Whether you are an educator, policymaker, psychologist, researcher, student, environmentalist, animal advocate, or someone searching for deeper meaning in today's rapidly changing world, this episode will challenge and inspire you.
In this remarkable conversation, you'll discover:
• How Human-Animal Studies is reshaping academic thinking around the world.
• Why compassion must influence education, leadership, and public policy.
• The connection between animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and climate change.
• How cultural attitudes shape our treatment of animals.
• Why psychology plays a vital role in creating lasting social change.
• The significance of the Anthropocene and humanity's responsibility within it.
• How every individual can contribute to building a more ethical and compassionate future.
Dr. Shapiro reminds us that true progress is measured not only by technological advancement, but by our capacity for empathy, responsibility, and respect for all life.
As we conclude Season 4, Episode 3, we invite you to carry this conversation far beyond the screen.
