Do You Actually Need an Admissions Consultant?

Do You Actually Need an Admissions Consultant?
Quick disclaimer: we are admissions consultants. So take this video for what it is, our honest take from inside the industry. But here's what Jason actually believes, and what we tell families who ask: most students do not need a consultant. A good school counselor, a few honest conversations at the kitchen table, and the free resources already out there will get most families most of the way there.
That said, there are specific situations where one-on-one advising genuinely moves the needle: applying across multiple countries with very different systems, targeting a small set of hyper-competitive programs, navigating a complicated profile, or simply wanting an experienced person running the process so it doesn't swallow your household. In this video, Jason walks through exactly when a consultant helps, when one isn't worth the money, and how to decide which side your child falls on.
If you're a parent weighing whether to hire help, this is the conversation you want to have before you spend a dollar.

How to Use Grade 11 to Prepare for University Applications
Grade 11 is the year that quietly decides where your child gets in. By the time Grade 12 starts, the file admissions officers actually read is mostly already built — the courses, the extracurricular trajectory, the test scores, the shortlist, the supplementary essay foundation. In this video, Jason walks through exactly how your child should use Grade 11, month by month, so the application they submit in Grade 12 is actually competitive.
Whether your child is targeting Canadian, US, or UK universities, this is the playbook we use with our own students to turn Grade 11 into the launchpad — not the cram year.

AI and education: why hard things still matter, costly signaling theory, and the K-shaped future
2026/03/22

McGill to Masters - How Catherine turned her passion into her studies
2025/11/27

In this episode, Jason sits down with Catherine — AdmissionPrep’s lead essay editor, writing coach, and advisor — to unpack how she:
Went from health science in Cégep to English literature at McGill
Fought through COVID disruptions and a housing crisis to complete a master’s in Fantasy Literature at the University of Glasgow

Sometimes You Have to Sprint: Lessons from UBC BUCS to Amazon
2025/09/18
Everyone says “relax, take it easy, don’t overdo it.” But Paige chose a different path. She knew there were seasons where the only way forward was to go all-in - maxing out on academics, leadership, and extracurriculars when it mattered most.
That choice carried her into UBC’s ultra-competitive Business and Computer Science program - and later into an elite role as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon.
In this episode of The Journey, Jason Yee and Paige break down:
How she built a standout admissions profile in high school
What it takes to survive and thrive in the rigorous “BUCS” program
Why pushing hard during key windows can unlock opportunities others miss
And her candid advice for students who feel pressure to know exactly where they’re going
Paige’s story is a reminder: your path isn't always linear - sometimes you need to sprint.

The Social Side of Engineering: Lessons from Queen’s University
2025/09/11
Engineering is often stereotyped as a lonely pursuit — long nights, endless problem sets, and students grinding away in isolation. But in this episode of The Journey, Jonas shares how his path to Queen’s University was shaped by community, collaboration, and authenticity. From winning the prestigious Chancellor’s Scholarship to finding the right peer group, Jonas shows that success in engineering isn’t about going it alone — it’s about building the right support system.
We’ll explore how Queen’s culture of collaboration made the difference, why choosing a school is about more than prestige, and what lessons Jonas would pass on to his 16-year-old self.
At The Journey, brought to you by AdmissionPrep, we believe the same principle applies to admissions: it’s not just about getting in, it’s about finding the place where you’ll thrive.
