Being a “good immigrant” will not save us, My new show with THEE Maria Bamford - Portland, OR’s Clear Clinic at Fubonn Supermarket (S2 E29)
2026/09/25
SEASON 2 EPISODE 29! FULL EPISODE FOR ALL! NO PAYWALL! It is Friday, September 25th, 2026 and this is GOOD EGG immigrant grocery store standup comedy tour take over What Should We Talk About? With Jenny Yang. jennyyang.substack.com or wherever you pod! Today’s episode was recorded in Portland, Oregon on August 13th, 2026 where I chatted with Alondra Duran, Immigration Staff Attorney at CLEAR Clinic, and Stefani Davis, Paralegal and Donations Coordinator at CLEAR Clinic. The owner of Fubonn Supermarket, where we recorded the podcast, Michael Liu also made a cameo at the top. Oregon’s CLEAR Clinic is a “nonprofit collective of legal workers who provide free legal services to Oregonians.” They “aim to tear down legal barriers that stop our community from enjoying each members’ full participation; to find legal, educational, and systemic solutions to racial, social, and economic injustice; and to work toward dismantling oppressive legal systems.” I REALLLY love what they are doing. We chat about life after incarceration, and how immigrant “respectability” and “model minority stereotypes” really harm all of us — especially when it comes to the current inhumane, immigration policies. IN GOOD EGG NEWS: I’m starting a series of 9 AM Wednesday morning standup comedy shows with THEE Maria Bamford! Consider this our office hours. You heard it here first. New material! On today’s agenda: * We sit down with Kabzuag Vaj, the founder of Freedom Inc., and Caleb with Dia’s Legacy an incredible retreat center and farm. Via the Freedom Inc. website: “In 2000, 26-year-old Kabzuag Vaj saw the need for a safe space in Madison, WI for young Hmong women to talk about the challenges they faced. She created the Asian Freedom Project and mobilized Southeast Asian teens in her neighborhood around issues of racial, profiling, welfare reform, and gender justice. ”In 2003 we became Freedom, Inc. and expanded our work to include Black and Southeast Asian youth, women, gender-nonconforming, and LGBTQ people. Since then we have continued to expand by creating specific programs focused on the needs of elders, refugees, immigrants, differently abled, and homeless people in our Black and Southeast Asian communities.” * Then we head out to the location where Corey Ruiz was shot and killed by Madison Police. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Ruiz, 38, was killed by Madison police officer Kiel Baitinger-Peterson in a struggle on July 22 at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin Streets. Bystander videos show a struggle between Ruiz and four officers, one of which deployed a tazer that didn’t seem to work, another who fired several shots.” This art installation slash living memorial has since been violently dismantled. Just last week, Freedom Inc. re-created an alter for Corey and others gunned down by police on the steps of City Hall. https://madison365.com/altar-for-corey-ruiz-rebuilt-on-steps-of-city-hall/ Because you don’t want to feel like you are losing your mind and because we long for a better world filled with fun, love, joy, and cool shit. I’m writing this on Friday, July 31st and I’m traveling this week for Phoenix and San Diego GOOD EGG immigrant grocery store standup comedy shows (tickets always up at jennyyang.tv) I thought WHY NOT REPLAY our very FIRST pod episode when we premiered in 2025. This is one our most watched and loved - featuring THE Chinese Cultural Consultant who advised Director Ryan Coogler on the Chinese Mississippi cultural experience for the movie SINNERS, my friend DOLLY LI, AND your fave cultural commentator BLAKELY THORTON. Next week we will be BACK in the cut with fresh episodes featuring our Midwest interviews with local activists and grocery store owners! LET ME KNOW WHAT EPISODE HAS BEEN YOUR FAVE? AND WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS WEEK! *** Thursday, April 24th, 2025 -- Blakely Thornton is ready to create some Met Gala red carpet moments, Dolly Li taught Ryan Coogler about the Chinese of the American South, and Jenny Yang has strong ideas for a hot Pope. It is THURSDAY, April 24th, 2025 on another weirdly chilly day here in Los Angeles, and like a Freaky Friday Michael B Jordan in Sinners, I AM BESIDES MYSELF. This is What Should We Talk About? With Jenny Yang, your weekly catchup time with smart and funny people who give a fck - probably too many fcks. We discuss topics submitted by our guests and you, the listener. Any topic! Current, old! Big, small! Nerdy, petty! Join in on the chat and suggest your burning topics. Leave a voicemail or text at my number: +1-323-250-3589. Because you don’t want to feel like you are losing your mind and because we long for a better world filled with fun, love, joy, and cool shit. This is What Should We Talk About? With Jenny Yang In the studio we have DOLLY LI! Documentary filmmaker & journalist. Now we can add cultural consultant on Sinners to that list! Host & producer of "Untold Story of the Mississippi Delta Chinese" on AJ+ (inspo for Sinners Chinese characters), Director of "Ghosts of Chinatown" on Hulu, Brooklyn native in LA; lived in Texas, Hong Kong, Oakland. We also have BLAKELY THORNTON! (TikTok) Pop Culture Anthropologist and Podcast Host, Yestergays with Justin Sylvester debuting May 27th with Podcast One. They’ll be discussing the queer pop culture moments that happened PRE-internet! There’s not even a website to link yet! On today’s agenda we have: 1. PODCAST UPDATES 2. Sinners! (SPOILERS AHEAD) 3. Can we get a hot pope? 4. Lack of Critical Thinking 5. The Studio on Apple TV 6. $5000 for women to have babies 🙄  7. ACTION ITEMS 8.
