Be Someone's Sentinel
2026/09/10
This one's for my grandpa — the sentinel who kept our family together. A tribute, and a call to be that person for someone you love. At his funeral, my uncle called him a sentinel — the guy who kept our family together. He made the plans. He built the campground we still gather at every year. Losing him made me realize how much weight that role carries, and how easy it is to take it for granted. Josh and I talk about the planners and the attendees in our lives — the people who make things happen, and the people who show up because someone else did the work. If you've got a sentinel in your life, this episode is a reminder to appreciate them. If you are the sentinel, this is a thank you. Be the sentinel for someone. Send the text. Make the plan. Don't wait until it's too late. Support the show
How to Turn Small Talk Into Real Conversation
2026/09/03
Jesse tried a trick at a concert — walking up to strangers and asking one question. It turned into a real conversation with a guy who drove down from Maine to be a backup bassist. That question leads into a bigger one: would you rather be overconfident or underconfident? Jesse and Josh talk about what each one costs you, why it matters at work, and why moving in the wrong direction still beats standing still. Support the show
Watercooler Talk: Making Friends as an Adult - Small Talk, AI, and Loneliness
2026/08/06
Making friends was easy as a kid — so why is it so hard as an adult, especially when you work from home and your closest daily "coworker" is an AI? Jesse and Josh debate whether small talk is pointless or secretly the doorway to real friendship, and kick off a new segment where Jesse actually goes out and tests friend-making tactics in the real world. In this episode: Why friendship gets harder (and slower) as you get olderThe "friendship points" theory — why time spent matters more than what you doSmall talk as a trap door into bigger conversationsRemote work, AI, and modern lonelinessJesse's real-world experiments: coffee-shop reading, exercise groups & more New segment coming: watch Jesse try these out — follow along and tell us which tactics we should rate. Watercooler Talk: Foldables, Flip Phones, and the Carrier Lock-In Trap
2026/08/06
Samsung just opened pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold and Flip, and Jesse has an upgrade available — so naturally this turns into a 20-minute debate about whether a "free" $1,800 phone is actually free. Jesse and Josh break down how carrier device financing really works (the monthly bill credit shell game, the 24-month lock-in, and what happens if you leave T-Mobile early), why foldables might be the first genuinely different phone form factor in years, and whether on-device AI is finally a reason to upgrade. Along the way: the pain of supporting mobile apps across every device generation, why PC gaming solved fragmentation and phones went the opposite direction, the Nothing Phone's US band problem, carrier coverage in rural areas, bundling home internet with your wireless plan, and a spirited defense of buying the Switch 2 for a slightly bigger screen. Watercooler Talk - Finding Your Next Book: Building a Reading Habit
2026/07/30
In this episode Josh and Jesse talk about getting back into reading after their earlier Seven Habits series and struggling to pick the next book. They discuss the polarizing reviews around the “Strange” books (including Strange Pictures and Strange Houses), why love-it-or-hate-it art can be more interesting than universally liked work, and how culture and translation shape storytelling, with examples from Japanese mysteries and The Three-Body Problem’s differing translations. They also share strategies for reading more consistently—setting aside 20 minutes a day, using phone readers, and replacing bedtime doom scrolling with a few pages—while noting how vivid imagination can make books feel like movies. They hope to both finish a book and return to discuss it. Support the show
Why You Should Take Breaks From Work
2026/07/23
Josh and Jesse discuss why taking breaks from work matters beyond burnout, arguing that time away can reveal gaps in documentation, automation, and shared knowledge so a team isn’t dependent on one person. They talk about breaks as a way to live life now instead of postponing experiences until retirement, and how stepping away can spark innovation, reset routines, and help reassess whether you’re building the right product or using the right tools. Jesse shares how conferences can feel like a productive break for remote teams and reflects on balancing work with family life, including guilt around time off. They also debate “unlimited vacation,” its incentives, and how remote flexibility can be both empowering and exploitable, concluding that people should take breaks regularly and work in whatever rhythm fits them as long as the work gets done.
