Rodger Shull on: What Blocks Movements in the West — and How They Happen Anyway, Part 2

Hi friend, thank you if you prayed for the Reformed Global Mission Network conference! Reformed leaders, including several denominational leaders, were drinking from a fire hose of disciple-making and movement insights. A good number committed to making disciple-making central to their denominations and churches. Glory to God!
Today’s podcast episode features part 2 of my conversation with Rodger Shull about What Blocks Movements in the West — and How They Happen Anyway. We explore objections such as secularism, individualism, wealth, urbanization, social isolation, and others. Then we turn the question inward: Which of the biggest blockers aren’t in Western culture, but within the church itself?
Rodger tells exciting stories from real movements happening in the West and unpacks practical lessons of what he has seen work in North America—including relational networks, oikos, “BLT communities,” events with intent, and turning mobility into an opportunity.
Who in your network will benefit from this? Please forward or restack—it could inspire someone’s next step in multiplying disciples.

Hello friend. Please would you pray for me this week? I’ll be in Nairobi, Kenya, equipping about 250 leaders from the Reformed Global Mission Network. As a network, they have decided to move toward a disciple-making and movement approach—and they’ve invited me to help equip them.
And speaking of movements… “Movements can’t happen in the West.”
I hear it all the time. So does Rodger Shull. In the newest episode of The Movement Cast, we tackle one of the biggest objections to movement ministry: Can movements actually happen in the West?
We explore objections such as secularism, individualism, social isolation, and others. Rodger points to real movements happening in the West and shares practical lessons of what he has seen work in North America—including relational networks and what he calls “BLT communities”.

Dave Coles on: The Two Sparks Every Movement Needs to Catch Fire

Hi friend, can you believe my excitement that my last book What Actually Starts Movements has been published in Korean?! I am deeply thankful to Tong Park for this commitment to the book. He and others in his network have incorporated the book content into their training curricula already. If you speak Korean or know Korean workers, here is the link. Further publications of the book in Spanish, German, and Arabic are in preparation.
Today we’re bringing you part two of my conversation with Dave Coles on the movement that has spread across the Horn of Africa, we get specific about ignition — what actually has to be present before a movement can even begin. Dave unpacks two factors he and Aychi identify as absolutely central: holy boldness and Jesus’ radical love. Dave is clear that the heart we bring to ministry matters more than the methods we use. He leaves us with one concrete question to sit with this week: if multiplication isn’t happening in your context, what should you (re)evaluate first? If you want to dive even deeper into the story, you’ll find more in Dave’s and Aychi’s book, Living Fire.

"I have found Multiplying Disciplers to be a great help. Hi friend, we are excited to let you know that we’ve updated my ministry webpage. Have a look around and enjoy the new content.
If you’ve ever admired a movement story from a distance and wondered what actually made it ignite, this episode is for you. Today I sit down with my friend and editor Dave Coles for the first of a two-part conversation on the story of a disciple-making movement that has spread across the entire Horn of Africa.
In this episode, Dave takes us into Aychi’s own story — the moment his ministry shifted from addition to multiplication, and the early days when that shift began to compound. We uncover the specific factors that ignited this movement — factors Dave believes aren’t unique to the Horn of Africa, but relevant to you wherever you’re serving. If you want to dive even deeper into the story, you’ll find more in Dave’s and Aychi’s book, Living Fire.
I was privileged to talk on the Lausanne Movement podcast about what leaders who start movements have in common and how we can grow in these qualities. Check it out here.

Greetings from Peru! I’m here equipping the leaders of the Latin American ministry Reflejo in setting themselves up as a movemental organization that becomes increasingly effective in catalyzing movements.
This week’s episode fits this very well. I talk with Joe Handley about polycentric leadership and his journey developing a leadership model that fits 21st-century realities in ministry and mission. There are some beautiful nuggets of leadership gold in this conversation. Enjoy listening! (In case this feels familiar — it may well be. We hit a technical issue sending it the first time.)

Dear friend, when you are reading these lines, I will be on a plane to Lima, Peru, where I’ll spend a week equipping the leaders of the Latin American ministry Reflejo under the leadership of the wonderful Dave Matthews. Reflejo has been shifting toward a movement-ministry paradigm, and I have the privilege of helping them set themselves up as a movemental organization — one that becomes increasingly effective in catalyzing movements.
In part two of my conversation with Matt Millar and Augustin Longa, we go deeper into the practice of making the kingdom relevant. The key question is not only, “Are we preaching?” but, “Are people hearing?”
We explore how culture can become a hidden entrance fee to the kingdom, how churches can unintentionally export their own church culture, and how leaders can discern whether people are truly hearing the gospel—or merely encountering something that feels foreign, irrelevant, or burdensome.
Matt and Augustin also address a common fear: Does contextualization water down the gospel? Their answer helps us hold together faithfulness to the gospel with genuine love for people and their context. This episode is for anyone who wants to communicate the gospel clearly, humbly, and beautifully in the places where God has placed them.
Related to this, I warmly recommend the new course on Multiplying Disciplers, our digital training platform: Developing a Gospel Message That Is Good News.

What if people are not rejecting Jesus, but something to do with us?

Salam, dear friend. I’ve just returned from training NEO leaders in Catalytic Leadership and in how to identify and address Movement Boosters and Blockers. The response was nothing short of amazing. In the room, senior leaders made an ad hoc decision: they want to equip all 7,800 of their church planters across the Middle East in the Catalytic Qualities. Even more remarkably, they decided to begin rolling out a coaching process “next week” among all leaders, cascading all the way down to grassroots church planters and house church leaders. Alhamdulillah!
And that makes today’s podcast episode especially timely. I’m joined by Matt Millar and Augustin Longa for a real, raw conversation about what they call “cultural humility” and the way we carry the gospel.
We ask a direct and uncomfortable question: What if people around us are not rejecting Jesus, but rejecting the cultural packaging we attach to Jesus?
Matt and Augustin help us explore why cultural humility is not a missionary technique, but a kingdom posture for every Christian. We talk about the danger of assuming that our way of being Christian is the normal one, and how leaders can begin to recognize when they are bringing their own culture into ministry more than they realize.
This conversation draws from their helpful book, The Church in Context: Harnessing Cultural Humility for Kingdom Advancement. If you would like to explore the topic more deeply, I warmly recommend it.
An update from Multiplying Disciplers: Did you know that 86% of our early users answered the question, “How valuable do you find this program for your ministry?” with “extremely valuable”?
We could barely believe such strong feedback! They could have chosen “valuable,” but their assessment was even stronger: the courses they had taken were extremely valuable for their ministry. That is deeply encouraging to our team.
And more and more learners are now signing up to explore Multiplying Disciplers for themselves. We reached more than 100 users within the first week! They are discovering short, practical courses designed to equip them to multiply disciples more effectively.
Would you like to try it out? It is easy to get started — and free of charge for the first 1,000 users.

Dear friend, Big news first before I introduce this week’s podcast: Multiplying Disciplers is now live!
After many months of building, testing, refining, and praying, our new training platform for multiplying disciplers has officially launched.
The platform is designed to provide practical, transformational equipping for disciple multiplication and movement ministry — helping leaders move from inspiration to real-life multiplication.
The first available programs include:
* Cultivating Expectant Faith for a Movement
* Making Your Discipling Reproducible
* Seven Best Practices of Multiplying Disciplers
* Developing a Gospel Message that is Good News
* Assessing the Blockers and Boosters of Your Ministry
* Becoming an Empowering Leader Who Unlocks Others
The first 1000 people who join as Founding Members will receive free access for one full year.
You can explore the platform and join here: Multiplying Disciplers
We would love for you to be part of this from the beginning.
Now to this week’s podcast: Brokenness, Failure, and the Soul of Leadership. Why do gifted Christian leaders so often burn out, drift morally, or slowly lose their soul while building ministry?
In this deeply personal and vulnerable conversation, Joshua Benadum and I talk honestly about disappointment, brokenness, failure, ambition, spiritual shallowness, and the danger of separating ministry competence from inner formation.
This is not about leadership techniques. It is about the soul of leadership — and the kind of inner life that can sustain long-term fruitfulness. I believe this may be one of the most honest conversations we’ve had yet on The Movement Cast.
For a deeper dive, here is a link to Josh’s book A Life That Leads.

Hello friend! Before I share today’s podcast, I’d love to give you a clearer glimpse of what is inside Multiplying Disciplers, the training platform we’ll be launching in the next few days.
It is not just a collection of courses. Our vision is to provide practical, accessible equipping for people who long to multiply disciples — helping them grow step by step in the skills, practices, and habits that lead to greater fruitfulness.
That is why every module is designed to move beyond theory. Learners are guided toward practical next steps, real ministry application, and simple actions they can put into practice right away.
The first available programs are:
* Cultivating Expectant Faith for a Movement
* Making Your Discipling Reproducible
* Seven Best Practices of Multiplying Disciplers
* Developing a Gospel Message that is Good News
* Assessing the Blockers and Boosters of Your Ministry
* Becoming an Empowering Leader Who Unlocks Others
A few things make this platform especially unique:
* Content shaped by the broadest-ever research on movements
* Training created by experienced movement practitioners
* Flexible learning designed for busy ministry leaders
* Practical next steps integrated throughout the learning process
* Modules designed not just to inform, but to transform
And here’s something important: The first 1000 people who join as Founding Members will receive free access for one full year.
If you’d like to get a first feel for the platform before launch, you can explore the website here: https://multiplying-disciplers.org/
We’ll launch in just a few day. On launch day, I’ll send you the signup link so you can join as a Founding Member. We would love for you to be part of this from the beginning.
Now to today’s podcast. If you’ve ever tried to move a church forward, you’ve felt the tension: everyone wants renewal—until it requires them to change. Big vision is common; lasting transformation is not.
In Part 2, Rich Robinson—co-founder and team leader of the Movement Leaders Collective (with Alan Hirsch) and co-founder of CREO—unpacks his simple but profound 4-stage change pathway: DREAM, DISCOVER, DESIGN, DEPLOY. You’ll hear why most churches hit a bottleneck between inspiring ideas and real implementation, why the leader’s inner life matters more than any outward process, and how to make it through the “valley” when momentum drops and discouragement rises. If you want to lead change with both courage and wisdom, this conversation will give you a clear map. If you’re interested in more, here’s a link to Rich’s book “All Change”.
Would you take a movement to think, Who in your network will benefit from this? Please forward or restack—it could inspire someone’s next step in multiplying leaders.

Greetings, friend! Before sharing today’s podcast with you, I have exciting news. Over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with leaders who deeply want to make disciples who multiply. They don’t lack passion. What they often lack is practical, accessible equipping that actually helps build the competencies needed for disciple multiplication in real life.
That is why our team has spent many months building something new.
At the end of this month, we will launch Multiplying Disciplers — a new online training platform designed specifically to equip movement practitioners, and church and ministry leaders to become multiplying disciplers. We built it for people like you.
This is not simply “another course platform.” Every module is designed to be practical, immediately actionable, and transformational.
The content draws from the broadest-ever research on movements, combined with the experience of seasoned movement practitioners and educational experts.
Our goal is simple: to help leaders move from inspiration to real-life multiplication.
At launch, the first 1000 people who join as Founding Members will receive free access for one year.
Over the next weeks, I’ll tell you more about what is inside the platform. We can’t wait to finally share this with you.
Now to this week’s podcast. If you’ve ever tried to lead meaningful change in church life, you already know the brutal paradox: people want things to change—until the change touches them. Vision is the easy part. The hard part is moving a community from “That sounds inspiring” to “We’re actually living differently.”
In today’s episode, I’m joined by my friend and fellow countryman Rich Robinson—co-founder and team leader of the Movement Leaders Collective (with Alan Hirsch) and co-founder of CREO. Rich has helped leaders around the world introduce real, lasting, transformational change—not hype, not quick fixes, but change that actually sticks.
We’re having a heart-to-heart conversation about the deeper realities of change. You’ll walk away with a sharper lens on what’s happening beneath the surface—because the real battle is often there—language for what’s really going on when momentum stalls or resistance rises, and fresh courage to lead with conviction when change gets costly.
If you’re carrying a vision for renewal but feeling the weight of “How do we actually get there?”, this episode will strengthen your hands and sharpen your next steps.
If you’re interested in more, here’s a link to Rich’s book “All Change”.
Would you take a movement to think, Who in your network will benefit from this? Please forward or restack—it could inspire someone’s next step in multiplying leaders.

Greetings to you!
My team and I have been overwhelmed by the reponse to our call for test users for the new digital training platform “Multiplying Disciplers” - a hugeThank-you to everyone who has volunteered. The only groups for which we still need more test users are women and practitioners from Africa.
If you are either—or both—we would love to hear from you! Every test user will receive free early access to our first six training modules and can explore one or several courses. All we ask in return is that they share suggestions for improvement. If you’d like to be a test user, simply reply to this message with the subject line “Test User.”
Today’s podcast episode continues our conversation on The Habits of a Multiplying Disciples. If multiplication in disciple-making feels more difficult than it ought to, the obstacle may not be your commitment or your zeal—it may be the patterns you’ve (unintentionally) trained into your daily life.
I’m again joined by Roy Moran, a pioneer of disciple-making movements in North America. Roy lays out the core habits that mark multiplying disciples, why he frames them as habits rather than occasional practices, and how lasting multiplication grows from consistent rhythms—not momentary bursts of motivation. Most importantly, we talk about how you can begin cultivating these habits in your own life.
If you’re aiming for progress that endures—not just a short-term push—this episode will encourage you and give you concrete next steps.
Can you pause for a moment and think, who in your network will benefit from this? Please forward or restack—it could inspire someone’s next step in multiplying leaders.

Assalamu aleikum - peace be upon you! When you read this, I was scheduled to be in the Middle East, serving the leaders of NEO Leaders, a ministry of NOVO. NEO workers have started almost 10,000 new groups among Cousins in the Middle East in the last year alone, with a total of 60,000 groups started. The NEO leaders loved my book What Actually Starts Movements so much that they have translated it into Arabic. We will soon publish it on Kindle as well.
Today’s episode is about The Habits of a Multiplying Disciples. If disciple-making multiplication feels harder than it “should,” there’s a good chance the issue isn’t your vision or your passion—it’s your habits.
I’m joined by Roy Moran, a pioneer of disciple-making movements in North America. Roy unpacks what these habits are, why he insists on developing habits rather than merely practices, and why multiplication is sustained not by good intentions, but by repeatable rhythms.
If you want to take your disciple-making to the next level—not for a week, but for the long haul—this conversation will both inspire you and equip you.
Can you pause for a moment and think, who in your network will benefit from this? Please forward or restack—it could inspire someone’s next step in multiplying leaders.

Greetings, friend.
Today in our on “Making Ministry Self-Sustaining” my guest Sevanand Kumar and I will be talking about Building Sustainable Disciple-Making Movements.
Sevanand is one of the handful most effective disciplers and church-planters I’ve met in my entire life. Not only that, he has helped build some of the most self-sustaining Christian movements I’m aware of today. If you want to make your ministry last, you’ll want to listen to him and benefit from his hard-won wisdom.

Peace to you—especially in a world that feels increasingly at war. When Iran appears in the news, we usually hear about conflict, crackdowns, and instability. Yet beyond the headlines, God is moving powerfully.
In this episode, I’m joined by Phil Moore for a second time to look at the rapidly growing house church movement in Iran—marked by courageous witness and an “intentional and intense” approach to making disciples. Phil has served alongside this movement for years, and he’s recently written about the reasons behind its remarkable growth in The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus: How Revival in Iran is Spreading Across the World. You can find more insights from the Iranian revival in the book.
