Amy and T.J. discuss one of the most elaborate and unthinkable murder cases they’ve ever covered with criminal defense attorney extraordinaire Alison Treissl. 40-year-old former IRS agent Brandon Banfield was found guilty this week of killing his wife Christine and a stranger he lured to his home, Joe Ryan. As police continue to investigate the abduction of the 84 year old mother of Savannah Guthrie, the Sheriff’s department had to put out a statement today refuting an allegation made by journalist Ashleigh Banfield.  Banfield has claimed a “high level source” told her that Savannah’s brother-in-law may be the prime suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.  As several news outlets picked up on the headline, the sheriff’s department responded by acknowledging that while detectives continue to speak with anyone who had contact with Nancy Guthrie, NO suspects have been identified at this time. Another twist in the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie.  A local Arizona news station is reporting that is also received a ransom note, but decided to withhold it from the public at the request of police.  TMZ a different decision, and according to the sheriff, went public with the ransom note it received before contacting authorities, a move he said could compromise the investigation.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Another bizarre turn in the abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s mom.  TMZ has given police a ransom note they received from someone who claims to have Nancy Guthrie, demanding millions in cryptocurrency by a specific deadline, “or else.”  TMZ says the note has details about the crime scene that only the suspect would know, and the Sheriff’s Office has confirmed they are aware of  “reports of a possible ransom note.” In the Meantime, comments have started pouring in about the case online and it’s already gotten political and frankly, cruel.   We hope Savannah never reads them. Investigators just held a news conference on the latest information into Savanna Guthrie’s missing mom, and several moments jumped out to us. First, the sheriff was asked twice about whether a ransom has been asked surrounding the abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, and both times the sheriff did NOT say no. Instead he said his team was following all of their investigative leads. The sheriff also told reporters that DNA samples processed from Guthrie’s home have not implicated any specific suspect. After nine hours of deliberating, the jury in the Brendan Banfield trial found Banfield guilty of all four charges, including two counts of aggravated murder for the deaths of his wife Christine and a stranger he lured to his home, Joe Ryan.  Banfield looked stunned as the verdict was read aloud.  The court quickly moved forward, scheduling his sentencing date for May, where the 40 year old former IRS agent will face life in prison without the possibility of parole.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Two very different closing arguments in the double murder trial of Brendan Banfield.  The defense ended strong, poking holes in the au pair’s testimony, saying none of it can be trusted, first because she has every incentive to cooperate with the prosecution and second, because the digital forensics don’t support the au pair’s and prosecution’s catfishing narrative.  The prosecution sped though their closing, going through the evidence they presented, point by point, finishing in less than 20 minutes.  There was no storytelling and little emotion, and ended with this conclusion: either you believe the au pair or you believe Brendan Banfield.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
