What I Miss About Home : Australian English, Tim Tams & Natural English Listening Practice
2026/09/28
What do you miss when you leave home? Sometimes it isn't the big things. Sometimes it's a bird call, a favourite food, a familiar word — or even a chocolate biscuit. 🍫 In this episode of English Snacks, I share the little things I miss about Australia while living in France: the unmistakable sound of an Australian magpie, chicken parmigiana (or parmi / parma), and the much-loved Tim Tam bickie (biscuit). And when I unexpectedly find Tim Tams in a shop in France, a little piece of Australia suddenly hits my heart and can be shared in my new home. Along the way, you'll learn natural English vocabulary, useful collocations, Australian English expressions and storytelling phrases that you can use in real conversations. ✨ In this episode, you'll learn: • miss — how to talk about someone or something you wish you had with you • come to my attention — a natural, more advanced way to say I've noticed / realised • warble — a musical sound made by a bird • unmistakable / distinctive — useful ways to describe something you recognise immediately • a staple food — something basic and regularly eaten • abbreviated / shortened to — how words become shorter in everyday English • last but certainly not least — a useful phrase for introducing the final item in a list • coated in a layer of — a useful food collocation • much to my surprise — a great storytelling expression • stock / stocks — how to say that a shop has a product available You'll also hear some Australian English, including: parmi / parma — short forms of parmigiana bicky / bickie — an informal Australian word for biscuit brekkie — an informal short form of breakfast Tim Tam — a famous Australian chocolate biscuit And yes… you'll learn how to do a Tim Tam Slam! 🍫☕️ 🗣️ SHADOWING & SPEAKING PRACTICE At the end of the episode, repeat new sentences using the vocabulary and collocations from the story. Practise matching my rhythm, stress and pronunciation to make your spoken English sound more natural. 🎧 English listening practice Feel free to play the episode at a slower speed if you need to, and use the transcript to read along. When Your Mind Goes Blank in English: What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say
2026/09/22
When Your Mind Goes Blank in English? Natural Phrases to Keep the Conversation Going Have you ever been asked a question in English and suddenly… nothing? You know the grammar. You know the vocabulary. But when someone is waiting for your answer, your mind goes completely blank. I've experienced this myself while speaking French — especially when I know someone is waiting for me to say something! In today's English Snack, we're looking at what to do when you know English but can't find the words in the moment. The solution isn't always to think faster. Sometimes you simply need to give yourself time to think out loud. 🍿 In this episode, you'll learn natural English expressions to: • buy yourself some time • deal with a blank mind • give an imperfect answer • break a big question into smaller pieces • keep a conversation going • recover when you lose your train of thought 💬 Useful expressions “That's a good question. Let me think.” A natural way to pause and give yourself thinking time. “How can I put this?” A useful filler phrase when you're forming your answer. “Off the top of my head…” Use this when you're giving a quick answer without carefully checking every detail. “Break it down.” Take something big or complicated and divide it into smaller, more manageable parts. “Start somewhere.” You don't need the perfect answer before you begin. “Done is better than perfect.” A useful reminder for English learners — and for life! “I've lost my train of thought.” Use this when you forget what you were saying. “Where was I?” A natural way to find your place again. 🧠 Today's big idea Sometimes your problem isn't vocabulary. It's content. Your brain isn't searching for a word — it's searching for an idea. Speaking a language in real time means understanding the question, thinking of an answer, finding the words, building the sentence and speaking… all at once! So don't panic if your brain needs a moment. An imperfect beginning is better than no beginning at all. 🎧 English listening practice Listen at your normal speed, or play the episode more slowly if you'd like. You can also follow along with the transcript. Try listening once for the overall meaning, then listen again and notice how the expressions help to keep the conversation moving. Show Up, Don’t Show Off: The Tiny English Habit That Actually Sticks 🎧 English Listening Practice | English Learning Habits | Everyday English | Motivation & Discipline
2026/09/19
Stop waiting for motivation. Start small, show up, and build an English habit you can actually keep. Do you start learning English with big plans… and then lose motivation a few days later? Maybe you decide to study for an hour every day. Then life gets busy. You miss one day, then another, feel guilty, and suddenly your English study habit has disappeared. In this English Snacks episode, Amber explores a surprisingly simple idea: What if your English habit is failing because you're asking too much of yourself? Instead of trying to study for an hour, what if you simply listened to one English sentence? Instead of waiting until you feel motivated, what if you simply show up? And instead of setting the bar high, what if you deliberately set the bar low? This episode is a gentle reminder that consistency doesn't have to mean doing a lot. Sometimes, the smallest action is the one that keeps you moving forward. 💬 Everyday English Expressions You'll hear and learn how to use: to fall off the wagon → to break a good habit you've been keeping “I was listening to an English podcast every day, but then I fell off the wagon.” to get back on track → to return to your plan after a break “Don't feel guilty. Just get back on track.” to set the bar low → to make the standard easy to reach “I set the bar low for myself. I learn five new words a day.” to show up → to be present and make an effort, even if it's only a small one “I don't need to be brilliant today. I just need to show up.” to make a habit of it → to do something regularly until it becomes automatic “Make a habit of reading one English sentence every morning.” to stick to it → to continue doing something even when it becomes difficult 🌱 Your English Challenge Don't try to completely transform your English today. Make the habit ridiculously small. Listen to one sentence. Learn one word. Read one paragraph. Say one sentence out loud. Then show up again tomorrow. Because you don't need a perfect English-learning routine. You need a routine you can actually stick to. 💭 A little inspiration Amber also shares the short poem “May You Always”, an anonymous poem about having enough happiness, challenges, hope, failure, success, friendship and determination to keep moving forward. Amber is an ESL teacher and native English speaker from Australia, now living in the French countryside. She's also a language learner herself, so English Snacks comes from both sides of the language-learning experience: teaching English and learning languages. Her goal is simple: to give you short, natural English lessons that fit into real life. No pressure. No perfection. Just one little English snack at a time. 🍿 You can also slow down the playback speed and follow along with the transcript if you'd like extra listening practice. Come hungry for knowledge.

Phrasal Verbs for Plans & Meetups: Set Up, Show Up, Tag Along (Phrasal Verb Series, Part 4)
2026/08/12
Making plans in English means knowing which phrasal verb fits the moment — and this episode has you covered from the first invitation to the final arrival. In part four of our phrasal verb mini-series, we're focusing on the everyday language of arranging to meet people, dealing with changes of plan, and getting where you're going. You'll learn how to set up a time to catch up with a friend, and the more relaxed alternative of just dropping by or dropping in when there's no fixed plan. We'll firm up the details on something already discussed, and look at what happens when life gets in the way: calling off a trip, pushing back a dinner reservation, or setting off at dawn to beat the traffic. Then it's on to arriving and meeting up — including the slightly cheeky show up (perfect for describing someone who's always late), the casual meet up for group plans, and tag along, for those moments when you're joining someone else's plan rather than making your own. As always, shadow the example sentences as you listen to build natural rhythm and pronunciation. A free companion worksheet with matching, fill-in-the-blank, and speaking practice is linked below: https://englishsnacks.gumroad.com/l/meetups Perfect for intermediate (B1–B2) English learners who want to sound more natural when making plans, discussing travel, or catching up with friends. 🎧 Part 4 of the Phrasal Verb Series | Next up: emotions English Snacks is hosted by Amber, an Australian-born English teacher bringing bite-sized, practical lessons to learners around the world. Phrasal Verbs for Relationships: Get Along, Fall Out, Make Up (Phrasal Verb Series, Part 3)
2026/08/09
Relationships are some of the trickiest territory in English — and this episode has you covered from the good times to the fallouts and everything in between. In part three of our phrasal verb mini-series, we're moving beyond the office and everyday life to focus on friendships, family, and the occasional disagreement. We'll start with the good stuff: getting along well with someone, looking up to a person you admire, and hitting it off with someone new. Then we turn to the harder side of relationships — falling out with a friend or family member, being let down by someone who broke a promise, and needing to back off and create some distance. Finally, we cover the vocabulary of repair: making up after a fight, owning up to a mistake, and trusting that things will work out over time. As always, shadow the example sentences as you listen to build natural rhythm, spoken English fluency, and pronunciation. A free companion worksheet with matching, fill-in-the-blank, and speaking practice is linked below to help you lock in this episode's nine phrasal verbs: get along, look up to, hit it off, fall out, let down, back off, make up, own up to, and work out. https://englishsnacks.gumroad.com/l/relationships Perfect for intermediate (B1–B2) English learners who want to talk naturally about friendships, family, and relationships in English, and build practical conversational English skills for real-life situations. 🎧 Part 3 of the Phrasal Verb Series | Next up: making plans and travel English Snacks is hosted by Amber, an Australian-born native English speaker and experienced English teacher bringing bite-sized, practical lessons to learners around the world — recorded in her own real voice, not AI-generated audio.
