How to Immigrate to Canada as a Doctor
2026/10/20
Are you a doctor trained outside Canada? Your route depends on one thing: Canadian work experience. In this episode, Amir Ismail, RCIC #R412319, explains both paths. If you have 12 months of Canadian medical work in the last 3 years, you can enter the Express Entry physician category. If you do not, a Provincial Nominee Program with a job offer or letter of support is your way in. You will hear: The 2026 physician draws and their CRS cutoffsThe four licensing steps, including the MCC changes from January 26, 2026What the November 3, 2026 Express Entry changes mean for doctorsThe fixed MCC and IRCC fees for a single applicant Read the full guide with every fee table and draw result:https://www.amirismail.com/how-to-immigrate-to-canada-as-a-doctor/ Explore more for healthcare professionals: Physician Express Entry category: https://www.amirismail.com/canada/express-entry/physicians/Healthcare Express Entry category: https://www.amirismail.com/canada/express-entry/healthcare-professionals/Provincial Nominee Programs for skilled workers: https://www.amirismail.com/canada/pnp-skilled-workers/No Canadian job offer or licence yet? https://www.amirismail.com/how-to-immigrate-to-canada-as-a-doctor-without-a-job-offer-or-canadian-license/Check your CRS score: https://www.amirismail.com/calculate-your-express-entry-crs-score/Latest 2026 draw results: https://www.amirismail.com/express-entry-draws-2026/ Want a plan built for your situation? Ontario Workforce Priority stream now awards up to 10 points
2026/10/08
The Ontario Workforce Priority stream awards up to 10 points for your Canadian earnings history, based on a Notice of Assessment from the last 5 years, and up to 15 points for the hourly wage in your job offer. Together that is 25 of your total score tied to what you earn. Ontario published the current grid on its Workforce Priority stream page, last updated October 6, 2026. How many points does Canadian earnings history give? Ontario scores your annual earnings, not your hourly rate, from a Notice of Assessment issued in the last 5 years. The thresholds are exact. $80,000 or more: 10 points$70,000 to $79,999: 8 points$50,000 to $69,999: 6 points$30,000 to $49,999: 4 pointsUnder $30,000: 0 pointsNotice the shape of this. The gap between $49,999 and $50,000 is worth 2 points. One dollar of reported income can move your score. How is the hourly wage scored? The wage band is worth more than the earnings band. It is prefilled from your job offer and does not apply to self employed physicians. $40.00 or more: 15 points$35.00 to $39.99: 12 points$30.00 to $34.99: 10 points$25.00 to $29.99: 8 points$20.00 to $24.99: 5 pointsUnder $20.00: 0 pointsA raise from $34.00 to $35.00 an hour is worth 2 points. A move from $39.99 to $40.00 is worth 3. These are the cheapest points in the grid to influence before you submit. Why do two factors measure pay? They measure different things. The wage band looks forward at the job you are being offered. The earnings history looks backward at income you have already reported to the Canada Revenue Agency. A newcomer on a first Canadian job offer can score well on wage and zero on earnings history. Someone with four years of Ontario employment can score on both. That is the practical effect of the design. Candidates already working in Ontario at a good salary are rewarded twice. What else carries heavy weight in the Ontario grid? Pay is not the biggest block. Three other factors move scores just as much. Ontario work experience in the offered position pays up to 18 points at over 24 months. Regionalization pays up to 15 points for a job in Northern Ontario, 10 for Eastern, Southwestern, or Central Ontario outside the Greater Toronto Area, 5 inside the GTA outside Toronto, and 0 for Toronto itself. Language pays up to 15 points at CLB 9 or higher, scored on your lowest ability across the four skills. A second official language at CLB 6 in both adds 10. A Toronto job offer scores zero on regionalization. The same offer in Thunder Bay scores 15. Where do most candidates lose points? Language, because Ontario uses your lowest of the four abilities. One weak writing score pulls the whole factor down. Legal status is the other quiet one. A valid work permit is 10 points and a valid study permit is 5. Holding neither is 0. You can model all of this before you submit with our OINP points calculator. Does this replace the old OINP streams? Yes. all other OINP streams are closed. Ontario also says more changes are coming. If you were building a file for a stream that has since closed, your scoring assumptions are out of date. Our explainer on the Ontario Workforce Priority stream and the 2026 OINP changes covers what moved and what closed. Self employed physicians are handled differently. Wage points do not apply, and their Ontario experience is counted as cumulative medical practice. See our post on Ontario physicians applying without a job offer. For the nomination volume behind all of this, see Ontario’s confirmed 2026 nomination allocation. What should I do before I submit? Pull your last 5 years of Notices of Assessment and find the highest single year. That number sets your earnings points, so check it rather than guessing. Then confirm the exact hourly wage on your job offer, in writing, against the band thresholds above. A wage a few cents under a band is worth fixing with your employer before you submit, not after. Full stream requirements are on our Ontario PNP guide.

Do You Qualify for Canadian Citizenship by Descent? The American’s Checklist
2026/06/16
If your family has Canadian roots, stop right there. You may already be a Canadian citizen. The truth is, millions of Americans suddenly became eligible (or much closer to eligible) when Canada changed its law in December 2025. The Canadian citizenship by descent law, known as Bill C‑3, is a 2025 reform that removed the “first‑generation limit” and expanded the ability of Canadians to pass citizenship to children and grandchildren born abroad. Below is a simple, step‑by‑step checklist to help you: Spot your Canadian anchor ancestor (the first Canadian in your direct line). Understand whether you fall into Cohort 1 or Cohort 2 under Bill C‑3. See what documents you need as an American to prove your claim. Decide if it is worth applying now or getting professional help with a complex file. Everything you want here exists on the other side of one decision: Are you willing to do the work to prove your Canadian roots? Key Facts If you were born before December 15, 2025, and have a Canadian parent, grandparent, or great‑grandparent, you may already be a Canadian citizen by law. If you were born on or after December 15, 2025, your Canadian parent needs at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada before your birth. Bill C‑3 removed the “first‑generation limit”, so you can now claim through grandparents and earlier generations. You prove your status by applying for a Proof of Citizenship (Form CIT 0001) with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). For millions of Americans with Canadian heritage, the path to dual citizenship has never been more accessible. On December 15, 2025, the Canadian government enacted Bill C3, completely removing the restrictive “first generation limit” that previously blocked many Americans from claiming their ancestral rights. This comprehensive checklist will help you determine your eligibility based on the new rules, identify your Canadian “anchor ancestor“, and understand the exact requirements you need to secure your Proof of Citizenship. Canada changed the Super Visa income rules. Most people missed it.
2026/03/24
Canada changed the Super Visa income rules. Most people missed it. The deadline is March 31, 2026. Here is what changed: OLD RULE: IRCC looked at only your most recent tax year to check income. NEW RULE 1: Either of your last two tax years can satisfy the test. NEW RULE 2: Your visiting parent's own income can now help bridge a shortfall. This matters for three types of people: 1. You had a bad 2024. Parental leave. Career transition. Business dip. Your 2023 income was fine. Under the old rules, you were stuck. Under the new rules, 2023 counts. 2. You and your parent together can now jointly cover the threshold. This has never been possible before. 3. Your application is already in processing. IRCC will automatically re-assess it. No need to resubmit. The minimum income to qualify starts at $38,002 for a family of two. If you have been putting off a Super Visa application because of the income barrier, you have seven days to act on this. Book a free consultation at amirismailca.com. 5 SURPRISING TRUTHS About Your Language Score for Canadian Immigration
2025/09/26
Nearly everyone planning a move to Canada knows that language skills are important. Most applicants focus on hitting the minimum score, breathing a sigh of relief when they do, and then moving on to think about work experience or education credentials. But what if that minimum score isn't the real goal? The truth is, the most critical details about language proficiency are often the least understood. It's the nuances of the scoring system, and how small improvements can have an outsized impact- that truly separate a successful application from one that gets lost in the pool. This podcast will reveal five of the most impactful and often overlooked truths about how your language scores can make or break your Canadian immigration journey. Learn more here: https://www.amirismail.com/5-truth-language-score-for-canadian-immigration/ Frequently Asked Questions About Language Score for Canadian Immigration Q: Do I need the Academic or General version of the IELTS test? A: You must take IELTS General Training. The Academic version is not accepted for Express Entry. Q: How long are my test results valid for?A: They are valid for two years from the date of the test. Critically, they must be valid both when you submit your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence after receiving an invitation. Q: Can I apply if I score a CLB 6? A: No. You are not eligible for the FSWP if you score below CLB 7 in any of the four language skills. Q: Which test is the easiest? IELTS, CELPIP, PTE or TOEFL?A: It depends on your personal strengths. CELPIP and PTE Core are fully computer-based, while IELTS includes an in-person speaking component with an examiner. Q: Do my spouse’s language results really help my Canadian Immigration application under Express Entry?A: Yes, absolutely. They can add up to 20 CRS points and 5 FSWP adaptability points, which can significantly improve your ranking. While factors like your age and work history are largely fixed, your language proficiency is the single most powerful lever you can pull to directly influence your ranking in the Express Entry pool. It is not just another prerequisite in your Canadian immigration application; it is a dynamic factor you can actively improve. The points system is designed to heavily reward those who go beyond the minimums. Knowing how much every point matters, what is one step you will take this week to move your language score from ‘good enough’ to ‘great’? Conclusion: Language Is Your Lever
