55: Do Public Sector Leaders Believe They are Worth Investing in?
2026/10/20
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/55 Have you ever noticed how you can get used to almost anything? A nagging pain in your back. Poor sleep. A job that pays well and appears more stable than others – but leaves you feeling empty. We adapt. We adjust. We convince ourselves it’s fine. "Don’t be picky, that’s just how it is." But here’s the thing about adaptation: it’s silent. Almost invisible.  You don’t feel like you’re paying a price because you’ve stopped noticing the price exists. In this episode, I talk about four hidden costs of silent adaptation.  Costs you might not be calculating when sitting on the fence about investing in yourself. Whether that’s a course, coaching programme or personal trainer - or anything that helps you build the career and life you want. *** Yvonne Davidis helps public sector leaders develop exciting career options that align with who they are now and how they want to evolve in future.  With 20+ years of moving countries, working for the UK and Denmark across three continents, plus professional coaching certifications, Yvonne is a unique specialist for leaders in the public sector considering their next chapter. 54: Smart Elements of Your Public Sector Career Transition Strategy

You probably checked the route and worked out what you needed to take.  You might have thought about who to take with you.  And you possibly even built in a few stops along the way that weren’t strictly necessary, but made the trip worth taking. A career change deserves the same kind of attention.  Because drifting along without a plan or leaping blindly tends to cost you more than you might think. That doesn’t mean you need to have every detail figured out from the get go.  But it helps to be strategic and intentional before you begin.  In this episode, I’ll share the 6 elements of a smart career change strategy. Think of it as your route plan. 53: When Values Misalignment Becomes Unbearable for Public Sector Leaders
2026/10/06
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at SpaceToShiftYourCareer.com/53 Your values work like a compass. You might have heard this before. But what does it mean? Let me explain.  You trust the compass to find the way you want to go because the needle is pointing True North.  But when something throws it off, an interference like a bit of metal nearby, the needle starts to drift. If you ignore the drift and keep walking, you end up further and further from where you actually meant to go. Just like a compass that’s working well, you usually don’t think about your values. It happens subconsciously. When everything is in alignment, you don’t notice it.  But... When the place where you work stops pointing in the same direction,   When what’s rewarded, prioritised, and lived out every day around you stops matching what matters to you,  That DRIFT becomes impossible to ignore. In this episode, I tell you about a client who felt that drift, and what she did about it.  LISTEN in and find out which 3 things helped move the needle for her. 52: Where Do You Want To Be a Year from Now?
2026/09/29
Send us Fan Mail Find the transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/52 I recorded this episode exactly one year after this podcast went live.  Yes, it’s the one year anniversary of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast. This puts me in a reflective mood. I think back to where I was one year ago.  I was at a crossroads:  Moving from one side of the world to the other.  I was about to go through another transition period in my life. It took me about one year to fully arrive back home. Much longer than on previous occasions!  My family and I had just come home to New Zealand from an overseas posting to Moscow. From one reality – and its many contradictions – to another, very different reality.  I had been working on the podcast for several months and was excited to finally share it.  I was disappointed when my mentor recommended to hold off until after our move. But... she was right.  I had to be fully present when I launched – not be distracted by packing and unpacking boxes – and, in a way, my life. I had used the last couple of months in Moscow to produce 10 or so episodes. That gave me breathing space for the first few months back home.  To settle in. To reconnect with people. To set up a new routine for my family – and my business. This one year anniversary makes me reflect on what can happen in a year. I share three versions of you.  Which one feels closest to where you want to be a year from now?  *** Yvonne Davidis helps public sector leaders develop exciting career options that align with who they are now and how they want to evolve in future.  With 20+ years of moving countries, working for the UK and Denmark across three continents, plus professional coaching certifications, Yvonne is a unique specialist for leaders in the public sector considering their next chapter. 51: How to Look After Yourself on Your Career Change Journey - 5 Tips
2026/09/22
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/51 Career change is a marathon, not a sprint. And a marathon isn’t won in the first mile. But when you’re deep into exploring your next career move – allowing yourself to dream up your ideal scenario, exploring, testing and verifying ideas – it can start to feel like a LONG journey. Often, the path isn’t straight. It zigzags.  Sometimes you take a step sideways before you can take one forward. And when nothing seems to be moving, it’s tempting to just… stop.  Throw in the towel. Stay where you are. Because at least it’s familiar. And I get it. I see it in almost every conversation I have with experienced public sector leaders who are ready for something new.  So let's talk about how to look after yourself while you’re in the thick of it. 50: Two Questions that Help Public Sector Leaders Rewrite their Career Story
2026/09/15
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/50 “I don’t really know how to describe myself anymore”, a public sector leader said this to me recently. On paper, they were incredibly accomplished. Years of leadership experience. Strategy. Stakeholder management. The kind of person others look at and think: “They’ve built such a successful career.” But psychologically? They felt lost.  Because the career story they had told themselves for many years no longer fitted. And they hadn’t built a new one yet.  I think this is one of the least talked about parts of career change.  People think career transition is mainly practical: Updating your LinkedIn profile and CV. Networking. Looking at options.  But at some point, career change becomes something much deeper: Identity work.  Who am I now?  What still fits? What no longer does?  How do I make sense of my experience in a way that supports where I want to go next? In this episode, I talk about how to begin rewriting your career story in a way that is grounded, honest, and actually useful. I’ll share 2 of the 7 questions I use with clients inside my 5-month Find Your Career Space programme. These questions are powerful because they help you move beyond job titles and reconnect with the deeper patterns underneath your career. 48: How to Find the Right People for Your Career Transition Support Team
2026/09/01
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/48 Here’s what I hear a lot from public sector leaders when they realise they need a support team for their career transition: “I know I need this. But I don’t know where to find these people.” "All my close friends are colleagues. I can’t be open with them.” “I don’t have anyone in my network who’s done what I’m thinking about doing.” It can be a real constraint.  Especially in the public sector, where your world can feel quite closed: colleagues, the people you work with, maybe some long-standing friendships.  Everyone seems to know everyone, with only a few degrees of separation. And yet: everyone is kind of in the same boat, facing the same constraints, thinking the same thoughts. So where do you find people who’ve made different choices?  Who’ve taken different paths?  Who can model something new for you?  How do you know where to look?  Let’s talk about that.  I show you where you can find three key roles for your career transition support team. And: how to approach people you don’t already know. 47: Which Roles Do YOU Need on Your Career Transition Support Team?
2026/08/25
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/47  I recently worked with two leaders navigating career change, and they needed completely different support teams. One leader was drowning in possibilities. She had five ideas and couldn’t decide between them. She needed someone to help her structure her thinking and break things down into steps. A Manager and a Trusted Expert were the roles she needed.  The other leader was paralysed by fear. He needed someone who believed in him and who motivated him to work things through step-by-step. A Motivator and a Mooringwere his priority. If I’d given them both the same template – all six roles I talked about last week – one would have felt overwhelmed and the other would not have gotten what would actually help. Your support team isn’t one-size-fits-all. It needs to be tailored to YOU. In this episode, I help you figure out which roles matter most for where you are right now. 46: The 6 Roles on the Support Team for Your Public Sector Career Transition
2026/08/18
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/46 Imagine you’re putting together a team at work to tackle a complex project. You wouldn’t just hire six people and hope they figure it out. You’d define roles. Clarify responsibilities. Make sure each person knows what they’re supposed to be doing. That’s the difference between a group of people and a functioning team. Building a support team for your career change works exactly the same way. But here’s what most people do: They vaguely mention to a friend or a family member that they’re thinking about making a change. They hope someone steps in with the right help. And then they’re disappointed when that doesn’t happen. It’s not because people don’t care. It’s because nobody knows what their job is supposed to be. In this episode, I’m going to walk you through 6 distinct roles. Each one serves a different function.  By the end, you’ll have a checklist. And a checklist makes everything easier. 45: What Stops Leaders from Building a Career Change Support Team?
2026/08/11
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/45 I once worked with a public sector leader who understood that having people around her would help her with her career change.  But when it came time to actually reach out to someone to say ‘I need help’?   She froze. “What if they think I’m weak for not being able to figure this out by myself? What if they judge me? “ It was about managing perceptions. Her own self-image, and the way others might see her.  These aren’t irrational fears. They’re real concerns. Asking for help went against everything she’d learned.  In becoming a leader, she’d learned: – Not to burden others with problems.  – To project competence.  – To "be professional".  – And that "vulnerability counts against me".  Notice the pattern? The assumptions? And judgments? Let’s talk about that. And about the gap between knowing you need support and actually asking for it. 44: 3 Reasons Leaders Need A Support System For Their Career Change
2026/08/04
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/44 A client of mine used to think career change was a solo mission.  You figure out what you want.  You make a plan.  You execute it.  Easy peasy, right?  If only it was that simple!  But for this leader, the idea of asking someone else for help felt like failure. Because he'd had to admit he couldn’t do it by himself.  So he read books and articles. Consumed newsletters about finding your passion and designing your life.  It helped – a little.  What he didn’t realise at the time: The thing he actually needed wasn’t another worksheet. It was other people with different perspectives.  In this episode, I talk about why building your own support team isn’t a luxury – it’s the difference between struggling alone and actually moving forward. 43: Why Focusing On Your Career Is Making Your Public Sector Career Change Harder
2026/07/28
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at SpaceToShiftYourCareer.com/43 Have you ever tried to grab a bar of soap in the shower?  It just keeps slipping out of your hands. The tighter you grip, the faster it escapes. And the more frustrated you get, the more force you use – which only makes it worse. Changing your public sector career can be a bit like that. The harder you try to pin down THE answer – the perfect new job, the perfect new career –  the more elusive it seems to become. Your mind spirals or goes blank. It’s hard to form a clear thought. And you end up exactly where you started:  Stuck in a career that no longer fits.  In this episode, I share a different way of approaching this.  One that takes the pressure off… and actually opens up more possibilities. 42: When Public Sector Leaders Hesitate to Invest in Themselves
2026/07/21
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript and other resources at spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/42 I notice something interesting when I talk to public sector leaders about investing in themselves. They’ll spend thousands on a degree and professional qualifications without blinking. They’ll invest their time in training courses their employer sends them on. But when it comes to investing in something that helps them figure out what they want next in their career and life, and how to make that happen, suddenly they pause.  And I think I know why. Because degrees and certificates are tangible. You can put them on your CV. You can show them as proof that you’ve learned something. But… Clarity about your valuesKnowing what actually matters most to youConfidence in your decisionsA sense of agency over your career and life You can’t put those in a frame on your wall!  They are less tangible. So they feel less real and less valuable. In this episode, I’m going to talk about what return on investment means. And why the "waste of money" objection might be missing something important. 41: Is It Too Late to Change Your Public Sector Career?
2026/07/14
Send us Fan Mail Find the full transcript at https://spacetoshiftyourcareer.com/41 I want to tell you about Chris. Chris was 46 years old. He’d built an impressive career as a government lawyer.  Worked his way up to being one of the respected voices in his ministry. Smart, competent, well-paid. By most measures, he’d made it. But when we talked, he told me something in a whisper, like it was shameful: He’d love to become a teacher.  “That ship has sailed. I’m too old now. I have a wife, two children, a mortgage. I’ve invested over 20 years in my career as a lawyer. I can’t just throw that away to start over in education. It’s too late.“ He said it with such certainty. Like the door had closed and locked behind him.  And I almost leapt through my laptop screen. Because Chris wasn’t trapped. He was caught in a story. A story that started completely unraveling once we started pulling at it. In this episode, I talk about the stories that keep us stuck. The narratives that feel like facts but actually aren’t. And what happens when you dare to challenge them.
