Lech Lecha: Bread of Shame, Tardemah, and What Your Soul Came Down to Earn
2026/10/20
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved opens Parshat Lech Lecha through an unexpected door: the soul's dignity instinct. Before the command to go, before the covenant, before the stars — there is a soul basking in divine light it didn't earn. And the shame of that unearned receiving is exactly why it descends. Drawing on the Meor Einayim, Rashi, Bereshit Rabbah, and Philo of Alexandria — and weaving in Gendlin's concept of the murky — this episode traces the full arc of Lech Lecha: from נהמא דכיסופא (bread of shame), through the descent into earthliness and the accumulation of small unknowns, into the תרדמה — the deep prophetic sleep that falls on Avram at the moment the brit is sealed. The darkness and the dread are not interrupting the covenant. They are the condition for it. What does it mean that God doesn't give Avram something — but enters into something with him? What shifts when the question moves from have I earned this to are we in this together? And what does the tardemah have to teach us about the kind of emptying that makes prophecy — and co-creation — possible? This one is for anyone who has ever felt unworthy of the light they're receiving. Your soul didn't come down to bask. It came down to earn. And the earning doesn't look like achievement. Sometimes it looks like the deepest sleep. Noach: Babel — The Tower, the Tongue, and the Heart
2026/10/13
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Noach through an unexpected door: the Tower of Babel. A generation survives the flood and rebuilds. They are unified, sophisticated, capable — one language, one speech. And yet something is hollow at the center. The Torah says safa echat, one lip — not lashon echat, one tongue. The Mei Hashiloach asks why, and his answer opens something deep: the holy tongue isn't defined by the language you speak. It's defined by whether your speech emerges from the root of life in your heart. Without that root, even sacred language becomes bird chirping. Drawing on the Mei Hashiloach, the Kli Yakar, and the Baal Shem Tov — and weaving in the trauma of collective rebuilding and the question of what we are building now — this episode traces the long road from the lip to the heart. From Babel to Sinai. From coordination without interiority to k'ish echad b'lev echad — one people, one heart. And the Baal Shem Tov's instruction to his students: pray even for the chirping bird. Even disconnected speech has letters inside it. The root is never gone — only buried. Bereshit: What Life Is Showing Me — The Garden, the Exile, and the Call That Never Stops
2026/10/06
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved opens a new Torah cycle with a question that has been echoing since the beginning: Ayeka. Where are you? Drawing on Eicha Rabbah, the Tzror HaMor, and Rebbe Nachman — and weaving in a personal thread from a recent silent retreat — this episode traces the arc of the divine-human relationship from the garden to exile to the call that never stops. What is the sin of hiding? Where does the distance between us and the divine actually come from? And what does it mean that our hiding doesn't silence the call — it intensifies it? We're also sitting on the eve of October 7th. Three years in. Still in the process. What is life showing you right now? Can you receive it? Sukkot: Walking After You in the Wilderness — On Uncertainty, Faith, and Joy
2026/09/22
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved steps into Sukkot still carrying the warmth of Yom Kippur — and finds in the humble, temporary structure of the sukkah a map for one of the deepest questions of human life: how do we walk through uncertainty? Drawing on the Zohar's teaching that the sukkah is the shade of faith, the Izhbitzer on the schach as divine covering, and Rebbe Nachman's radical teaching that God created the world for people who can find faith through the confusion — this episode traces a trifecta alive in every sukkah: uncertainty, faith, and joy. Not joy as the overriding of difficulty. Joy as deep attunement with the rightness of life as it is. The joy that emerges when we can hold our uncertainty in faith. The joy of following the divine into the wilderness — not because we have it figured out, but because we're in love. We walked after You in the wilderness. That's the pillow talk of God and the Jewish people. And it's the invitation of Sukkot. Shabbat Shuva and Yom Kippur: What the Year Left in You
2026/09/15
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Shabbat Shuva — the Shabbat suspended between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur — and finds inside the opening verses of Ha'azinu a teaching that reframes the entire season. Drawing on the Meor Einayim of Reb Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl, this episode traces the movement of the life-force through a person — how it rushes in, returns to its source, and leaves behind a reshima: an impression, a recognition, a trace. And it is precisely this recognition — already written on your face, already carried in your body — that draws the life-force back, with more. Yom Kippur is not about manufacturing the right feeling or producing the perfect confession. It's about reading what's already there. The year already wrote it. The impression is already on your face. What did this year leave in you? That's the question to carry into Kol Nidrei. Ki Tavo and Elul: Hasket — The Word That Holds Two Medicines
2026/08/25
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Ki Tavo and orients to a single word that carries layers of spiritual technology. Hasket. Usually translated as “hearken” or “take heed” — a doubling of the command to listen. But the Midrash reads it differently. Has: become silent. Katu: shatter. Two medicines hidden in one word. The path to becoming a people, to truly hearing the words of Torah, to entering the land — it begins here. Drawing on the Midrash, the story of Rabbi Akiva, and the medicine of Elul, Yocheved traces two kinds of silence — the has that arises from within, and the shtok that comes from beyond — and what each one prepares us for. The shofar as amniotic fluid. The shattering as birth. The month of Elul as the space where silence and shattering learn to live together. Has. Then katu. Silence first. Then something breaks. And from the breaking — an am. A people. A self that can finally hear. Ki Tetzei and Elul: The God of the Breast — Eil Sha-dai and the Field of Return
2026/08/18
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved arrives at Parshat Ki Tetzei with a chidush that stops everything: the Hebrew root of sadeh — field — is the same as Shadai. Eil Shadai. The God of the breast. The king in the field, the classic Elul teaching, turns out to be more than a metaphor for accessibility. The field is the place of the nurturing God — the divine who feeds, who sustains, who knows exactly when you are full and says die*, enough. Not abandonment. Deep attunement.* Drawing on the thirteen attributes of mercy, four mitzvot from Ki Tetzei, and the arc from Elul into Rosh Hashana, Yocheved traces what it means to be held by Eil Shadai before standing before Havayah. The womb before the throne. The mother before the king. The milk is already flowing. The field is already receiving. The practice is not feeling it — it’s turning toward what already is. Shoftim and Elul: Who Stands at Your Inner Gate? — On Discernment, Surrender, and the Inner Prophet
2026/08/11
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters Parshat Shoftim at the threshold of Elul — and finds inside it a map for the inner work of this season. The Torah opens with a deceptively simple command: place judges and officers in all your gates. But Moshe isn’t only talking about city gates. He’s talking about the gates of the inner world — the places where fear enters, where the crowd’s opinion enters, where the past tries to determine the present. Who stands there? How do we discern what to let in and what to release? Drawing on the archetypes of the judge, the tamim, and the prophet — and weaving in a visceral encounter with the Gobi desert — Yocheved traces three movements of Elul preparation. The judge discerns. The whole self surrenders to mystery. And from that surrender, the inner prophet arises — the voice from within, the still knowing, the one we were always meant to listen to. This is a teaching for anyone standing at a threshold — and ready to ask who has been standing at their gate. What Fire Reveals — A Teaching for Tisha B’Av and the Nine Days
2026/07/21
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the Nine Days and Tisha B’Av through the element of fire — and asks what fire actually does to us when we’re willing to stay with it. Drawing on Elijah’s breakdown in the wilderness, the burning bush that wouldn’t be consumed, Michael Meade’s three layers of human life, and a stunning teaching from the Rambam’s Tisha B’Av prayer — this episode traces four movements of fire. What is burning. Staying with what burns. What burns away. And what becomes audible in the aftermath. With fire You consumed it. With fire You will rebuild. This is a teaching for anyone moving through the heat of this season — and anyone willing to ask what the fire might be revealing. Devarim: The Long Goodbye — Three Prophets, Three Eichas, One Sacred Question
2026/07/14
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the book of Devarim — the long goodbye — and finds inside one word the full arc of a people, a leader, and a life. Moshe stands at the edge of the Jordan, knowing he will not cross. What does a beloved leader say when there is nothing left to protect? He speaks himself — his own words, his own memory, his own love — for the first time. The stutterer becomes a man of words. And the word he chooses is Eicha. How. Drawing on the Sfat Emet, the Midrash of Eicha Rabbah, and a stunning Breslov teaching, Yocheved traces three prophets who each said eicha at a different moment in the arc of Israel’s story — and a different moment in the arc of every human life. Moshe’s eicha of fullness. Isaiah’s eicha of disillusionment. Jeremiah’s eicha of desolation. And underneath all three — the same letters, the same question: ayeka. Where are you? The question the Divine asked Adam. The question that doesn’t accuse but evokes. The question that draws the Shechina out of hiding. What is the eicha you’re longing to hear? And what might it unlock? Matot-Masei and the Three Weeks: Gestation, Grief, and the Stories We Tell in Between
2026/07/07
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the Three Weeks — the 21 days of bein hametzarim — through a surprising teaching from Rebbe Nachman that changes how you see this season entirely. An egg gestates in 21 days. The luz bone — the indestructible bone at the base of the neck — shares this same time signature. And the Baal Shem Tov teaches that the 42 journeys of the desert correspond to the full arc of a human soul, from birth to eternal life. 42 is double 21. Which means grief, as real and sacred as it is, is only half the story. Drawing on Parshat Matot-Masei and weaving in personal threads from her own process, Yocheved explores the vows we make — spoken and unspoken — during the in-between spaces of our lives. The stories we tell about our own formation. The ones that sustain us. And the ones that quietly constrain what’s trying to be born. Something is forming in the dark right now. The question is: what story are you telling about it? Pinchas and 17 Tammuz: Grief as Testimony — Four Women, Four Voices of Loss
2026/06/30
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the threshold of Parshat Pinchas alongside the beginning of the Three Weeks — and asks what it means to grieve as testimony. Through four women — the daughters of Zelophchad, Rachel weeping on the side of the road, Miriam and the well that dried up after her unmourned death, and a more personal thread about being an eldest daughter — Yocheved traces four distinct registers of grief. Spoken and answered. Spoken and unresolved. Withheld by the collective. Withheld by the self. What happens when grief doesn’t find its voice? Where does it go? And what becomes possible when we stop treating our patterns and symptoms as problems to solve — and start hearing them as testimony not yet heard? This is a teaching for the threshold. For the three weeks. For anyone carrying a grief that hasn’t yet taken the stand. Chukat-Balak: The Hidden Conversation— Why the Pause Is Part of the Torah
2026/06/23
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved explores the mysterious open space between the Torah portions of Korach and Chukat—a silence that stretches across thirty-eight years in the wilderness, during which Divine speech seemingly ceases. Drawing on teachings from the Maggid of Mezritch, Rebbe Nachman, and the Alter Rebbe, she enters the relationship between speech and silence, exile and redemption, black fire and white fire. What happens when the voice of God grows quiet? What is being formed in the spaces between certainty, between insights, between chapters of our lives? Through the imagery of the Torah scroll itself—the black letters resting upon white parchment—this episode invites us to reconsider absence, pauses, and periods of not knowing. Silence is revealed not as emptiness, but as a field of presence; not as abandonment, but as a different form of relationship. Together, we explore the hidden longing engraved within the soul, the sacred work of learning to listen beneath words, and the paradox at the heart of spiritual life: that sometimes the deepest revelation arrives only after we release our need to understand. A teaching for anyone moving through uncertainty, waiting, transition, or the fertile space between what has ended and what has not yet emerged. Korach: Where Are You God? — The Sons Who Did Not Die, the Sheol, and the Sanctity of Unresolved Grief
2026/06/16
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the story of Korach — and finds inside it not just a rebellion, but a lineage. The wound beneath Korach’s uprising was real. The argument was sound. But what he did with the wound swallowed everything. And yet — the sons of Korach did not die. Held in an impossible liminal space between Sheol and life, their descendants became seers, prophets, Temple singers. And their darkest psalm ends without resolution. Without the face of God turning back. Just darkness — sung in public, in community, by divine decree. This episode is personal. It asks what it means that unresolved grief belongs in sacred space. That you don’t need to fix your suffering before you bring it to God. And what becomes possible when we stop demanding resolution. Where are you, God? That question is worship too. If this episode stirs something in you around grief, Yocheved is running a four-session summer container through Shefa — The Medicine of Grief: A Journey Through the Fire and the Holy Dark. Shelach: We Were Like Grasshoppers — A Kabbalistic Map for Meeting Complexity
2026/06/09
In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved enters the story of the spies — one of the most pivotal ruptures in the Torah — and asks: why did ten of the twelve collapse when they encountered the land? Drawing on the Beit Yaakov of the Ishbitzer and the kabbalistic teaching of arousal from above and below, Yocheved traces a formula for meeting complexity without collapse: autonomy, connection, and compassion. The grasshopper consciousness — there isn’t room for both of us — is not just a historical moment. It’s a nervous system state. A way of perceiving that collapses space when the field feels too big. And the antidote? A rope. The chevel. The thread that holds us vertical when everything feels overwhelming. The parsha ends with tzitzit — not by accident. Look at the threads. Remember the rope. Don’t spy after your own eyes. It is the space that holds all, yet remains empty, the void that allows healing and transformation to take place, take shape, belong, integrate and disperse. It is an invitation inward, into a space and community, as well as one’s own inner world. A place to be stretched and to come together, to feel at home in exploration, with room to be and to breathe.
