Why “Just Listen More” Is Bad Advice
Today, I want to talk about probably one of the most common questions I see people asking online, especially on platforms like Xiaohongshu: How do I improve my English listening?
Should I listen to English podcasts every day? Should I watch American TV shows? Should I turn off the subtitles? Should I listen to the news?
And since you’re listening to Blend Inn right now, maybe you’re wondering: If I just keep listening to this podcast, will my English listening naturally get better?
Well… hopefully. But… not necessarily.
Because I think one of the biggest misconceptions about listening is that if you just keep exposing yourself to English—even if you barely understand it—eventually your listening will magically improve.
I don’t think that’s quite how it works.
Think about it. If I give you a podcast about quantum physics and you understand 10% of it, and then you listen to it for an hour every day, are you really practicing English listening?
Maybe.
But you might also just be spending an hour every day not understanding English.
And that’s an important distinction.
You don’t improve your listening simply by listening to more things you don’t understand. You improve by gradually understanding more of what you listen to.
English Learning Card|Build an English Bubble for Better Listening
1. One-minute summary|
Improving English listening is not simply a matter of listening more, especially when most of the material is incomprehensible. Progress happens when you gradually understand more of what you hear. One effective approach is to build an “English bubble” around a subject you already love and understand. David did this with basketball: because he knew the players, teams, rules, and recent games, context helped him predict meaning and absorb recurring vocabulary. Strong listening combines bottom-up skills, such as recognizing sounds and sentence structures, with top-down skills, such as using background knowledge and expectations. Good material should offer three things: genuine interest, enough familiar knowledge and vocabulary, and something new that stretches you. Rather than looking up every unknown word, notice repetition and check the words that keep returning. Start small by replacing one part of your normal content consumption with English, then branch out as your confidence grows.
2. Key vocabulary & expressions|
3. Useful sentence patterns|
You don’t … simply by + V-ing; you … by + V-ing.:
You don’t improve your listening simply by hearing more English; you improve it by understanding more of what you hear.
Instead of + V-ing,
Instead of choosing random podcasts, start with a topic you already love.
If I were …, I would …:用虚拟语气表达假设情况下的选择或建议。
If I were choosing listening material, I would look for interest, familiarity, and challenge.
The more …, the easier/more …:表示“越……,就越……”。
The more vocabulary you understand, the easier the content becomes.
Even if …, … can still …:表示“即使……,仍然可以……”。
Even if you don’t understand every word, you can still follow the main idea.
4. Speaking practice|
Why can “just listen more” be ineffective for improving English listening?
What topic could you build an English bubble around, and why?
How do context and background knowledge help you understand spoken English?
When should you look up an unfamiliar word instead of simply continuing to listen?
5. Quick review|
Many learners have the ________ that difficult content is always better.
Build an ________ around something you already love.
Context helps you ________ unfamiliar phrases.
Once familiar topics feel comfortable, ________ into new areas.
The right mix of familiarity and challenge is the ________.

How did Mexico lose half of its country? How did that change the fate of both countries?

English Learning Card|How the Mexican-American War Reshaped North America
1. One-minute summary|
After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico controlled a vast territory that included much of today’s American Southwest. Many American settlers moved into Texas, but conflicts over culture, political autonomy, and slavery eventually fueled the Texas Revolution. Texas became an independent republic in 1836 and joined the United States in 1845. A border dispute and President James K. Polk’s expansionist agenda helped trigger the Mexican-American War in 1846. After Mexico’s defeat, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred a huge amount of land to the United States. The war reshaped both countries, intensified the debate over slavery, and left a lasting Mexican influence on the culture of the American Southwest.
2. Key vocabulary & expressions|
3. Useful sentence patterns|
California used to belong to Mexico.
not only … but also …:表示“不仅……
The war not only changed the border but also intensified the debate over slavery.
It was not until … that …:强调“直到……
It was not until 1845 that Texas joined the United States.
If + had done, … might/would have done:
If Mexico had kept California, North American history might have unfolded differently.
What makes … fascinating is that …:表达“……
What makes this war fascinating is that its effects can still be seen today.
4. Speaking practice|
Why did Texas want to join the United States?
How did the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo reshape North America?
How can geography change a country’s possibilities?
What Mexican influences can still be seen in the American Southwest today?
5. Quick review|
The war ________ in 1846.
Mexico ________ a large area ________ the United States.
Many Texans were ________ joining the United States.
Many cultural traditions in the Southwest can ________ Spanish and Mexican roots.

EP186 [全英] Is AI Going to Kill Us All?
2026/09/20
Why Some AI Researchers Think There’s a 10% Chance
Imagine you’re about to board a plane, and someone tells you there’s more than a 10% chance it could crash.
Would you still get on?
Now imagine the plane is artificial intelligence—and the possible outcome isn’t a crash, but the extinction of humanity.
It sounds like science fiction. But some of the people building advanced AI genuinely believe the risk is real.
So where does that “10%” come from? What are AI researchers actually afraid of? And if the risk were real, would we ever choose to stop building?
In this episode, we talk about AI doomsday, alignment, superintelligence, p(doom), and the strange logic of an AI arms race.

Simone
“A difficult experience can become part of your story without becoming your whole identity.”

EP184 [全英] Why Is Making Friends So Hard as an Adult?
2026/09/09
How Modern Life Made Connection Easier—and Friendship Harder
Today, I want to talk about something that sounds very simple, but the more I think about it, the more complicated it becomes: Why is it so hard to make friends as an adult?
According to a major report released by the WHO last year, roughly one in six people around the world experiences loneliness. And interestingly, loneliness is actually more common among adolescents and young adults than among older people.
You can be 25, living in New York, working at a big company, going to bars every weekend, with 2,000 followers on Instagram—and still feel incredibly lonely.
So today, let’s talk about adult friendship: why it gets harder, what modern loneliness actually looks like, and maybe most importantly, what we can do about it.

Boomerang hiring is becoming more common in tech.
Boomerang hiring is becoming more common in tech.

Not every AI-driven layoff means AI can fully replace the affected jobs.
AI regret can lead companies to rehire workers they let go too quickly.

Whether the output is good enough to ship is ultimately a judgment call.

EP181 [全英] Why Does Everyone Suddenly Have ADHD?
2026/08/26
What ADHD really is, why diagnoses are rising, and what the science actually says.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed this too, but over the past few years, it feels like ADHD has gone from being a relatively niche medical term to something that’s part of everyday conversation.
Someone on TikTok says, “If you do these five things, you probably have ADHD.”
A friend gets diagnosed at 35 and suddenly understands why they’ve struggled their whole life.
Parents are talking about it. Teachers are talking about it. Even companies are talking about creating ADHD-friendly workplaces.
So naturally, a lot of people start wondering: Is everyone suddenly getting ADHD?
Or maybe a better question is: Has ADHD actually become more common, or are we simply getting better at recognizing it?
Today, I’d like to unpack that question. We’ll talk about what ADHD actually is, how doctors diagnose it, why diagnosis seems to be increasing, why countries like the United States appear to diagnose it more often, and finally, what treatment really looks like.

mobilize
crystallize
neutralize
to make something become a certain state
01|Mobilize
from inactive to active
The company needs to mobilize its resources quickly.
She mobilized the team around a shared goal.
I need coffee to mobilize my brain in the morning.
Mobilize is not just to move.
Mobilize is to activate hidden or scattered energy and turn it into action.
02|Crystallize
这个词来自 crystal(水晶 / 晶体)。
from vague to clear
from scattered to structured
from blurry to formed
The discussion helped crystallize my thinking.
Writing my MBA essays forced me to crystallize my career goals.
The meeting crystallized the real issue.
Crystallize is not simply to understand.
It is when something vague slowly becomes clear, structured, and real.
03|Neutralize
to make something neutral
to make something lose its power or effect
neutralize ≠ destroy
make it harmless
neutralize a threat:解除威胁
His humor helped neutralize the tension in the room.
He neutralized the awkward silence with a joke.
Writing things down helps me neutralize negative thoughts.
04|Mobilize · Crystallize · Neutralize
to make something become a certain state
Mobilize
Crystallize
Neutralize
Mobilize what is asleep.
Crystallize what is unclear.
Neutralize what is harmful.

Cosplay?

Have you noticed that recently, no matter whether you’re scrolling through Instagram, Threads, or even Xiaohongshu, one word just keeps popping up?
HYROX.
I honestly feel like it has exploded almost overnight.
A few years ago, I had never even heard of it. But now, I have friends signing up for races, gyms around Sydney are offering HYROX classes, and people who never used to post about fitness are suddenly sharing photos with medals around their necks.
Then I started noticing something else.
It’s not just everyday people.
Professional athletes are doing HYROX. Olympians are doing HYROX. Entrepreneurs are doing HYROX. Fitness influencers, YouTubers, celebrities… they’re all jumping in.
What is going on? Why has this event become so popular in such a short amount of time?
So today, I want to talk about three things.
First, what exactly is HYROX? Second, who created it, and how did it become one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world? And finally—and I think this is the most interesting question—why is everyone suddenly obsessed with it?
Because I actually don’t think this is just about fitness.
I think HYROX tells us something about where fitness culture—and maybe even our own society—is heading.

01|Experience / Experience economy
You don’t just watch a Nolan movie. You experience it.
You don’t just watch a Formula 1 race. You experience it.
“I was there.”
02|Pilgrimage

That museum is worth the trip.

You’re not going because you happen to have time. You’re making time for it.
05|Scarcity
Scarcity makes things feel more valuable.

07|Every adaptation is an interpretation.
Every adaptation is an interpretation.

I want to start today’s episode with a question that has probably crossed the minds of millions of people around the world.
Is college still worth it?
Now, I feel like this question is everywhere these days.
Scroll through YouTube, Reddit, or social media, and you’ll probably come across someone saying, “College is a waste of money.” Someone else will tell you that AI is replacing everything anyway. Then another person says you can learn anything online for free. Why spend years in school when you have YouTube, online courses, podcasts, and now AI?
And honestly, I understand why people are asking this question.
Think about the world we live in today. If you want to learn coding, there are thousands of free tutorials online. If you want to learn marketing, finance, psychology, or even philosophy, you can find lectures from some of the world’s best universities with just a few clicks. And if you’re stuck on something, AI can explain it to you in seconds.
Knowledge has never been more accessible.
At the same time, education has never been more expensive.
In many countries, tuition continues to rise every year. Student debt has become a serious issue. Parents are wondering whether it’s still worth making such a huge investment. Students are wondering if a degree is still the best path to success.
It’s a fair question.
In fact, I think it’s one of the most important questions young people are asking today.

It’s been a roller coaster.”
Roller coaster
AI stocks have been on a roller coaster.”
It’s been a roller-coaster month for investors.”
AI stocks have become increasingly volatile.”

EP174「I felt discouraged.」
I felt a little discouraged。
She always stood out in class.
It took me a while to fit in.
Do I really belong here?
Don’t lose heart.
Take heart. Things will get better.
have a crisis of confidence — 遭遇信心危机
He’s having a crisis of confidence.
I started questioning myself.
feel out of your league — 感觉周围的人远比自己厉害,自己难以胜任
I felt completely out of my league.
It took me a year to find my footing.
I don’t just want to survive—I want to thrive.
fit in vs. belong
Don’t give up vs.Don’t lose heart
Don’t lose heart
frustrated vs. discouraged
discouraged vs. deflated
When everyone is exceptional, it’s easy to start feeling ordinary.
Maybe I’m just not good enough.
Everyone here seems to be playing in a different league.
Feeling discouraged doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the wrong place.
Give yourself time to find your footing.
Don’t be afraid of rooms that challenge you. They might just become the places where you grow the most.
