October 26, 2026 — "Sammy talks to Habiba Nosheen about The Gymnasts of Fisherman Colony"
2026/10/26
The Bridge is available on the iHeart Radio app
Episode 649
ON TODAY'S SHOW
A Monday built around a filmmaker. Habiba Nosheen — three Emmys, a Peabody, Columbia Journalism — joins Sammy for the long back half of the hour on The Gymnasts of Fisherman Colony, the film executive produced by Malala Yousafzai and Mariska Hargitay about Karen, Sonia and Anwara, three girls born in Pakistan who on paper don't exist — no ID, no public school, no public hospital — and who do cartwheels on the beach anyway. The nine-year-old from Lahore who threw a tantrum when she didn't land in Canada blonde, the refugee kid who grew up to win three Emmys, the film that found her through the same lawyer who helped bring her daughter home, and what she would tell that nine-year-old now: everything's going to be okay, be kinder to yourself. Out of the conversation comes a record nobody has heard yet — Eva B's Yeh Barhi Baat Hai, built from the girls' own words, faded early because it isn't out. Screenings Tuesday at the Laemmle Santa Monica and Wednesday at the Laemmle Glendale. The hour opens with the weekend's No1, Talwiinder's Mangda Wapis Kyun, three days ahead of the Painted Feelings album, then Niyam's Tum Se Tum Tak and Jass Manak's Kante. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, Harsh Nussi's Gall Manlaa leads into Meera Sharma's Mindful Minute of Sass, A.R. Rahman's Ravana Tandav from Ramayana — the film world-premieres in Los Angeles this week — sets up Daniel Johnson's UN News Report, and Raghav and Arjun's Jaadu Kaisa Hai takes the show into the interview. After Sammy's closing remarks on Habiba, Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Aditya Rikhari leads into his new Jaan-E-Jaan from Between Distances, Karan Aujla's Rap Killa from the just-released Aujla Season 1 EP follows, and Tesher's Possession closes the show. Tomorrow: Kalki Koechlin on her new film Her Song. Wednesday: Malvika [confirm name]. Thursday: Arshdeep Maan.

Weekend Countdown — Airs Friday October 23 through Sunday October 25
ON TODAY'S SHOW
It's the weekend on The Bridge — the Top 20 Countdown, Friday through Sunday, and Talwiinder keeps the throne with a different record. Mangda Wapis Kyun, with Kidjaywest and NDS, climbs from its No3 debut to No1, six days ahead of the Painted Feelings album on October 29, while last week's No1, Assay Passay, slides to No8 — two straight weeks at the top for Talwiinder with two different songs. Arshdeep Maan's Saun Lagge is the week's biggest climber, up eight from its No10 debut to No2 in only its second week. Five new entries: Niyam's Tum Se Tum Tak is the highest, straight in at No3 eight days after release; Aanchal Tyagi and Abhijeet Srivastava's HISAAB lands at No5; Harsh Nussi's Gall Manlaa at No14; Ravana Tandav — Vishal Dadlani's vocal on the Hans Zimmer–A.R. Rahman score for Ramayana: Part 1, out Tuesday — at No18; and Priya Ragu's Madras, the title track of her album due November 26, at No20, taking over from her own Finally. Tesher's Possession jumps eight to No11 in Halloween week, Arijit Singh and Pritam's Tu Hi Disda rises five into the top ten at No9, and Rawme Hooda's Pump Up climbs two more to No6. The fallers: Raghav and Arjun's Jaadu Kaisa Hai drops twelve to No17, Satinder Sartaaj's Guzarish — No1 two weeks ago — falls nine to No15, Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Ashke drops eight for the second week running to No19 while their Rap Killa slips six to No10, Jasmine Sandlas and Shekhar Chaudhary's Pyaar falls seven to No16, and Jass Manak's Kante gives up No2 for No4. Jxggi's Knock Knock, Shreya Ghoshal's Bairi Piya and Maan Panu and Tav's I Met Her Again hold at No13, No12 and No7. Sammy opens with his thanks to Amaal Mallik for the first two-day interview in the show's history and points ahead to Kalki Koechlin on Tuesday; he signs off at No1 with a plug for the Monday newsletter at sammychand.com. He counts them down from No20 to No1 — the songs the diaspora moved the most this week.

Episode 647
ON TODAY'S SHOW
Part two, and the business end of it. Amaal Mallik is back on the line from India for the back half of the hour, picking up Wednesday's AI thread — Hans Zimmer's synths, Kraftwerk behind their masks, credit the machine where you use it but call the session player when you can — and moving into what it is to be a composer in India: what a hit like Sooraj Dooba Hain or Mithoon's Tum Hi Ho actually pays its composer, ten or fifteen lakh up front and a publishing share that feels like being on payroll; the hundred-rupee song where ninety-five go to the label, two and a half to the writer and two and a half to the composer, halved again every time a label recreates it; the admission that the only reason he can earn a living is that he can sing, and his question about the composer who can't; why saying any of this is treated as a villainous job that has cost him films, and why he says it anyway, "like a warrior"; the label he started for the kids who can't get through the doors of Sony, Universal or Warner; and Sammy's famous question — what the 36-year-old says to the 16-year-old still standing at the Vishesh Films gate: hang in there, it gets better, beyond your wildest dreams. Amaal introduces Yeh Awarapan to America himself. Sammy's closing puts the two days together — the kid with a keyboard and no songs outside the Bhatts' gate, the surname everyone assumes opened it, the debut that tanked, the house and both cars gone in 2014, the call to his masi in New Zealand about a McDonald's or a gas station, Sooraj Dooba Hain nine months later, and twelve years and nearly 143 songs on, Yeh Awarapan, written with Rashmi Virag from a very dark place and presented by Mukesh Bhatt, No1 in the country — the gate, finally from the inside; twenty years to get in, and the first thing he does on the other side is hold it open. Next year, his first independent album, his name on the door. The music hour stays with his work: Kar Gayi Chull, his rebuild of Badshah and Fazilpuria's Chull; Jaan Hai Meri from Radhe Shyam; Tu Mera Nahi, his 2020 pop debut on his own vocal; Yeh Awarapan out of the conversation and Tu Mila To Haina to close. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, and Sammy plugs tonight's Rukus Avenue Radio lineup — Sabeen Faheem's Who Does She Think She Is at 5 and Ruby Basi at 6. Friday: the Weekly Top 20 Countdown. Monday: Kalki Koechlin.

ON TODAY'S SHOW
The first two-day interview in the show's history begins. Amaal Mallik — the composer out of the Malik house, grandson of Sardar Malik, son of Daboo Malik, nephew of Anu Malik — calls in from India for part one of a conversation that runs the back forty minutes of the hour. Sammy sets up the human story before he arrives: a family with very deep expectations, and a word, nepotism, that gets thrown around far too easily. Then the story itself: the 16-year-old standing outside the Vishesh Films gate in Mumbai with a keyboard and no songs, the surname everyone assumes opened it, a debut that tanked, the family losing the house and both cars in 2014, the call to his masi in New Zealand about working at a McDonald's or a gas station — and nine months later, Sooraj Dooba Hain. Amaal on checking the streaming numbers on every release without letting them touch the art; on writing from his own friendships and heartbreaks so a song fits the film's narrative one hundred percent and still feels, to a stranger hearing it on the radio, like their own story; and a long, clear-eyed stretch on AI — Suno and ElevenLabs will give you back whatever you prompt, but no software can sit through 35 years of pain or a father's highs and lows, any musician is better than AI, and the royalty question is still unsolved from India to the DSPs — capped by the song he ideated on a laptop from a hospital bed, his brother Armaan singing the guide vocal, every AI part swapped for live musicians once the shoot wrapped. The hour opens with his music: Baari Baari, the 2025 Punjabi record with Armaan Malik, Tu Mila To Haina with Arijit Singh from De De Pyaar De, and Hua Hain Aaj Pehli Baar with Armaan Malik and Palak Muchhal from Sanam Re; Subah Subah from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety takes the show out. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue. Tomorrow, part two: the industry, the label he started for the kids who can't get into Sony's lobby, and what he would tell the 16-year-old who used to stand outside the studios.

Episode 645
ON TODAY'S SHOW
Nihaarika joins Sammy from Delhi, late on a Tuesday night her time, for the back half of the hour — the artist who was signed to Sony Music India early, had the platform before she knew who she was, and walked away when the contract ended to go independent, not against labels but for herself. A girl from UP, from a family of doctors and engineers where nobody knew a thing about music, who wrote Urdu Me Geeta alone in her room, and whose advice to a young girl in Delhi who wants to be her is "don't be like me, be yourself." The hour opens with Arshdeep Maan's Saun Lagge, fresh off its No10 debut on the weekend count, then Arijit Singh's Chann from Udta Teer, the Sachin-Jigar soundtrack ahead of Friday's release, and Talwiinder's Mangda Wapis Kyun, nine days out from Painted Feelings. Nijjar's Bari follows the Word On The Avenue, Neesh previews tonight's Garage Mahal, and Gur Sidhu and Kaptaan's Breezy leads into Yeh Awarapan, Amaal Mallik's title track with Arijit Singh, as Sammy sets up the first two-day interview in the show's history — Amaal Mallik on Wednesday and Thursday. Rawme Hooda's Pump Up and Comeback, Bali and Nihaarika's record together, take the show into the conversation, and her own Urdu Me Geeta follows it out. Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Pritam — the geology graduate who dropped a master's for a sound-recording course at FTII Pune — sets up Tu Hi Disda with his longtime collaborator Arijit Singh, and MC Square's Long Way From Home closes the show. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, Neesh previews his show, and Sammy closes with his remarks on Nihaarika.

ON TODAY'S SHOW
A Monday built around one conversation. Yelhomie, the rapper from Imphal, Manipur, whose name means the indigenous people of his state, sits down with Sammy for the long back half of the hour — the choice between music and the regular job everyone else takes, a rap culture he says is still not significant in Manipur, the language barrier that keeps Northeast rappers out of a Hindi-first scene, the killings and displacement that drove him to put his people on the record, and Young Naava, the mixtape named for "young brother" that tells the story of his state's youth, including a track about a friend who died and never got to raise his daughter. Two of his records frame the talk: Eastside Flow going in and The Greatest coming out. The hour opens with the weekend's new No1, Talwiinder's Assay Passay, ten days ahead of the Painted Feelings album, then Raga and Seedhe Maut's Kuch Mat Kar and Jass Manak's Kante. Sammy has the weekend's big news — Shah Rukh Khan's UNIFYD festival in Abu Dhabi next March, with Arijit Singh and Karan Aujla headlining — before Dr. Roy's Word On The Avenue. Maan Panu and Tav's I Met Her Again sets up a thread that pays off late in the show: Aditya Rikhari mentored Maan Panu after judging him on a reality show, and Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Aditya Rikhari leads into his Promise. Meera Sharma has the Mindful Minute of Sass, Daniel Johnson has the UN News Report, and Sammy closes the hour with his remarks on Yelhomie. Tomorrow: Nihaarika. Wednesday and Thursday: the two-part Amaal Mallik conversation.

Weekend Countdown — Airs Friday October 16 through Sunday October 18
ON TODAY'S SHOW
It's the weekend on The Bridge — the Top 20 Countdown, Friday through Sunday, and Talwiinder takes the throne. Assay Passay climbs from No2 to No1, his first time at the top of the board, and he lands a second record in the top three the same week: Mangda Wapis Kyun, with Kidjaywest and NDS, debuts at No3, two weeks ahead of the Painted Feelings album on October 29. Satinder Sartaaj's Guzarish gives up the crown after a week and falls to No6, Jass Manak's Kante rises to No2, Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Rap Killa, featuring Azaad 4L, climbs to No4, and Raghav and Arjun's Jaadu Kaisa Hai jumps five to No5 — the duo's second top-five record after Ho Jayenge Ghum. Four new entries in all: Mangda Wapis Kyun at No3, Maan Panu and Tav's I Met Her Again at No7, Arshdeep Maan's Saun Lagge at No10 in his first play on the show, and Tesher's Possession at No19, right on time for Halloween. Rawme Hooda's Pump Up is the week's biggest climber, up eleven from No19 to No8, Jasmine Sandlas and Shekhar Chaudhary's Pyaar rises five to No9, and Simiran Kaur Dhadli and Zealo's Asla Najaij moves up two to No18. The fallers are steep again: Priya Ragu's Finally drops ten to No17, Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Ashke falls eight to No11, Shreya Ghoshal's Bairi Piya and Burrah's Lakeerein each drop seven, to No12 and No15, Sidhu Moose Wala's Ghostface Killah slides to No20 while he is on tour across North America, and Jxggi's Knock Knock drops four to No13. Raga and SAMBATA's Got Lucky holds at No16 and Arijit Singh and Pritam's Tu Hi Disda inches up to No14. Sammy opens with a look back at the week — Nayab Midha on Monday, Mahlan Wala 59 and the Unlimited premiere on Thursday — and points ahead to Yelhomie on Monday, Nihaarika on Tuesday and a two-part Amaal Mallik conversation on Wednesday and Thursday. He counts them down from No20 to No1 — the songs the diaspora moved the most this week.

A world premiere and a first. Mahlan Wala 59, the Punjabi artist out of Auckland, is the first guest The Bridge has ever had from New Zealand, and he sits down with Sammy in the back half — Punjab to Auckland, kabaddi before music, the scene down under, the state of Indian hip hop — before premiering his brand-new single Unlimited, with J Tricks, a day before it is out everywhere. It is an international hour by design: Priya Ragu's Finally out of Switzerland opens it, Talwiinder's Assay Passay arrives with Painted Feelings two weeks out, and Shreya Ghoshal's Bairi Piya lands ahead of the Word On The Avenue. Jass Manak's Kante follows Dr. Roy for the third time this week, Aashi Arora previews Monday's Leaders Creating Ruckus with entertainment attorney Nina Ameri, and Rawme Hooda's Pump Up, Tesher's Possession, Arijit Singh and Pritam's Tu Hi Disda, Vishal Mishra's Tumhein Bhi Humse, Sidhu Moose Wala's Ghostface Killah and Rawme Hooda and MC Square's Treat Me Special carry the show into the conversation. Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Karan Aujla sets up Ashke, and Jxggi's Knock Knock closes the show ahead of Friday's Top 20 Countdown. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue and Sammy closes with his remarks.

ON TODAY'S SHOW
Ruby Basi joins Sammy in the back half, and the two of them finally get to the Sidhu Moose Wala hologram concert they had been waiting on — the Toronto show, the parents walking out with Sidhu's little brother, the moment the hologram played with the microphone and hit the pose — plus what's coming on her show this week. The music opens with Yung Sammy and Seedhe Maut's Mudda, Karan Aujla and OneRepublic's Tell Me, and Jogi from Bir and Thiarajxtt, the producer behind a good chunk of Diljit's year. Chaar Diwaari and Sonu Nigam's Iss Tarah follows the Word On The Avenue, Steel Banglez, NAS and Sid Sriram's Times arrives with Steel Banglez fresh off the Toronto stage, and OtaaL's Demise, Jordan Sandhu's Big Things, Juss's Jhootha from Ikk Kudi, Harkirat Sangha's Midnight Call, Farak's Taare (the summer's No2 by the newsletter's count), Cheema Y and Gur Sidhu's Rebel and Natkhat and Chaar Diwaari's Radha run the middle of the hour, before Tak Dhinak Dhin, from the artist Sammy premieres tomorrow, takes the show into the conversation. Raghav and Arjun's Ho Jayenge Ghum follows it out, Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Garry Sandhu sets up his Lucky, a former No1, and Papon's Apne Khilaaf — written by Irshad Kamil, recorded live in a living room — closes the show. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue and Sammy closes with his remarks.

ON TODAY'S SHOW
Sunny Grewal is back in the back half, and this time it's the Sidhu Hologram Tour — the first show landed in Toronto over the weekend, the building was packed and the parents were in the room, and Sammy and Sunny get into what the show was, where it goes next (two cities in the US, four in Canada, the West Coast soon), and how many tributaries one legacy can carry. The music opens with Diljit Dosanjh's Waliyan, Priya Ragu's Finally and Ashke, the lead single from Karan Aujla's Aujla 1 with Merci Beats; Jass Manak's Kante follows the Word On The Avenue, and Neesh previews The Garage Mahal before Simiran Kaur Dhadli and Zealo's Asla Najaij. Raghav and Arjun's Jaadu Kaisa Hai hands off to Zeeshan Ali and Dr ANK's Bandhe Zulfon Pe, a No1 just two weeks ago, then Simran Chaudhary's Dil De Mohalle, Amrinder Gill and Jasmeen Akhtar's Coffee, the most-played song of the summer, Shubh's Bounce, Rawme Hooda's Total, and Cheema Y's Haji Mastan into the conversation. Saivi Fareed's Naa Pushde follows it out, Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Jai Dhir sets up his Sunehra with Lost Stories, Rawme Hooda's Pump Up follows, and Hania Aamir's Pablo closes the show. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, Neesh previews his show, and Sammy closes with his remarks — and word that the ten year-end Bridge awards get revealed tomorrow, with a world premiere on Thursday.

ON TODAY'S SHOW
Nayab Midha joins Sammy in the back half, fresh off a North American run of Rajkumari that sold out nearly every room it played — the show that started as a twenty-minute set for thirty or forty tickets before a poem went viral overnight, the seventeen handwritten pages and three and a half hours on stage because she didn't know what to cut, the call to her father after two and a half years at Infosys, and what she would tell a nine-year-old girl in Sri Ganganagar: be fearless. The hour opens with the weekend's new No1, Satinder Sartaaj's Guzarish, a rare Hindi outing for the Doctor, straight into Talwiinder and Kidjaywest's Mangda Wapis Kyun ahead of Painted Feelings on October 29, and Ashke, the lead single from Karan Aujla's Aujla 1 with Merci Beats. Cheema Y and Gur Sidhu's Rebel follows the Word On The Avenue, Priya Ragu's Finally, last week's No1, takes the show into the conversation, Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Tesher sets up his brand-new Possession, and Jass Manak's Kante closes the show. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, Meera Sharma has the Mindful Minute of Sass, Daniel Johnson has the UN News Report, and Sammy closes with his remarks.

Weekend Countdown — Airs Friday October 9 through Sunday October 11
ON TODAY'S SHOW
It's the weekend on The Bridge — the Top 20 Countdown, Friday through Sunday, and Satinder Sartaaj takes the throne. Guzarish debuts straight at No1, the second time this year Sartaaj has walked onto the board and gone directly to the top, after Nazma'n Di Paalki did it in July. It's the biggest refresh in weeks: eight new entries, and Priya Ragu's Finally, last week's No1, slides to No7. Talwiinder's Assay Passay climbs to No2 ahead of the Painted Feelings album on October 29, and Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Ashke rises to No3. The debuts stack up right behind them — Jass Manak's Kante at No4, Shreya Ghoshal's Bairi Piya at No5, and Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Rap Killa, featuring Azaad 4L, at No6, putting Karan Aujla on the board twice in the top six. Nijjar's Bari arrives at No11, Jasmine Sandlas and Shekhar Chaudhary's Pyaar at No14, Vishal Mishra's Tumhein Bhi Humse from Tum Mere Ho at No18, and Rawme Hooda's Pump Up at No19. The fallers are steep: Hania Aamir's Pablo drops ten from No2 to No12, Zeeshan Ali and Dr ANK's Bandhe Zulfon Pe falls ten to No17, Sidhu Moose Wala's Ghostface Killah slides eight to No13, and Simiran Kaur Dhadli and Zealo's Asla Najaij drops eleven to No20. Burrah's Lakeerein holds at No8, and Raghav and Arjun's Jaadu Kaisa Hai climbs one to No10. Sammy counts them down from No20 to No1 — the songs the diaspora moved the most this week.

Ruby Basi joins Sammy in the back half with a video out of Calgary — a woman who climbed out of her car to berate a man crossing the street and ended the clip in handcuffs — and a look at what's coming on her show this week. Sammy opens the hour with one of his favorite songs of all time, Arijit Singh's Gaaye Ja, and keeps it going with Lost Stories and Jai Dhir's Sunehra and Karan Aujla's Jee Ni Lagda, the Ikky Singh collaboration. Sahib Samra's 1 Day follows the Word On The Avenue, Sanju Rathod's Bangles comes with word that the year-end Bridge awards are about to be announced, and Satinder Sartaaj's Nazma'n Di Paalki, a former No1, hands off to Darshan Raval's Barsaat Lagdi Ae. The chart runs through the middle of the hour — Zeeshan Ali and Dr ANK's Bandhe Zulfon Pe at No7, Priya Ragu's Finally holding No1, and Burrah's Lakeerein at No8 — and takes the show into the conversation, with Karan Aujla and Merci Beats' Rap Killa, featuring Azaad 4L, following it out. Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Jasmine Sandlas sets up her Pyaar, Shreya Ghoshal's Bairi Piya lands late, and Talwiinder's Assay Passay closes the show at No3 ahead of Painted Feelings on October 29. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue and Sammy closes with his remarks.

Episode 635
ON TODAY'S SHOW
Sammy sits down with Harjap Bhangal, one of the foremost faces of immigration law in the UK, for a long conversation on what makes a British person British, the state of immigration on his side of the Atlantic, and what the diaspora is living through everywhere else — the back half of the hour belongs to it. The music opens with two of the summer's records, Cheema Y and Gur Sidhu's Rebel, a former No1, and Farak's Taare, before Wazir Patar and Raashi Sood's Beautiful Day. Nijjar's Bari lands fresh off Saregama, Talwiinder's Assay Passay climbs to No3 ahead of the Painted Feelings album on October 29, Zeeshan Ali and Dr ANK's Bandhe Zulfon Pe, one of the year's handful of No1s, sits at No7, and OutStation's Kuch Toh Hai Yahan takes the hour into the interview. Curtain Blue's Yeh Duniya brings it back at No17, Doyeeta Das Gupta's Artist Spotlight on Vishal Mishra sets up his Tumhein Bhi Humse from Tum Mere Ho, Rawme Hooda's Pump Up follows, and Arijit Singh and AR Rahman's Sunhari Kirne closes the show. Dr. Roy has the Word On The Avenue, Neesh previews The Garage Mahal, and Sammy closes with his remarks.
