Beta Pictoris b Magnetic Field, UAP Disclosure & New Species
2026/10/09
Today on Headlines from the Beyond: What have astronomers detected coming from a planet 63 light-years from Earth? Researchers have detected radio emissions from Beta Pictoris b that appear to be produced by auroral activity, providing the first direct evidence of a magnetic field on an exoplanet. We explain what the discovery actually tells us—and why, despite the extraterrestrial implications, these signals are not evidence of an alien transmission.
Then, a new UAP disclosure initiative could give military personnel, government employees, and contractors a way to report previously protected UAP-related information without violating nondisclosure agreements. We look at the Department of War’s PURSUE initiative, what its new disclosure provisions actually allow, and whether it could remove some of the legal barriers that UAP disclosure advocates have long argued prevent potential whistleblowers from coming forward.
Finally, science has added some remarkable new animals to the catalog of life. The Tilcayo tiger cat, Leopardus tilcayo, was recently recognized as a distinct species in Bolivia—the first new living cat species described in more than a century. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, researchers formally described the Likweli, Colobus congoensis, only the fifth new African monkey species identified in 75 years. And genetic research has revealed a distinct population of southeastern gentoo penguins on the Kerguelen Islands. What do these discoveries tell us about how much life remains undocumented—and whose knowledge counts when scientists decide what constitutes a “new” species?
Three stories, one briefing on the strange, the storied, and the extraordinary.

The Cape Girardeau UFO Crash of 1941: Missouri’s Forgotten UFO Cover-Up | Paul Blake Smith Interview
2026/09/17
What happened in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in April 1941 more than six years before the infamous Roswell incident?
On this special episode of Beyond the Human, we’re joined by author Paul Blake Smith, whose new book The UFO Bombshell Before Roswell: Missouri’s 1941 Crash and Coverup explores one of the lesser-known alleged UFO crash stories in American history.
Smith takes us through the crash, the evidence he uncovered while researching the case, and why he believes the incident deserves a place in the larger history of UFO crashes and government secrecy. We discuss the unusual circumstances surrounding the reported crash, the potential involvement of local and military figures, and why this incident has produced far fewer whistleblowers and deathbed revelations than cases like Roswell.
We also explore Smith’s research into Franklin D. Roosevelt’s activities around the time of the crash and his theories about possible Masonic connections to the events and subsequent cover-up. Finally, we look beyond Missouri to the alleged 1933 Magenta UFO crash in Italy, including claims about Vatican knowledge of the incident and its possible connection to the MO41 story.
What can the Cape Girardeau case, and the stories that have grown around it, tell us about the history of UFO crash narratives, secrecy, and the ongoing search for answers about UAPs?

Investigating Sasquatch: Inside NAWAC’s Search for Bigfoot | Michael Mayes Interview
2026/08/31
What can years of systematic field research actually tell us about Sasquatch?
In this episode of Beyond the Human, we’re joined by Michael Mayes, author of Valley of the Apes: The Search for Sasquatch in Area X and Shadow Cats: The Black Panthers of North America, and former Chairman of the Board of Directors for the North American Wood Ape Conservancy (NAWAC).
As the second interview in our cryptohominid series, Mayes takes us deeper into the evidence emerging from NAWAC's long-term research in Area X. Drawing on the experiences documented in Valley of the Apes, we explore why encounters appear to increase with time spent in the field and what researchers can learn by developing a detailed understanding of an environment and the animals that inhabit it.
We take a closer look at some of NAWAC's most intriguing findings, including Tag 7 and the remarkable range associated with the animal, as well as the group's efforts to document and communicate its research. Mayes also discusses the challenges of publishing research on a subject that remains controversial within mainstream science.
We also turn to the larger questions raised by the research: what would constitute convincing evidence for a biological cryptohominid, and how should researchers respond when years of fieldwork produce compelling observations but no physical specimen?
Finally, we discuss the reception of Valley of the Apes, the divide between academic and popular paranormal research, and what it might take to build a more productive relationship between the two.
From long-term fieldwork and animal behavior to the limits of evidence and the challenges of studying controversial phenomena, this conversation asks a deceptively simple question: after years of looking, what do we actually know about Sasquatch?

Searching for Sasquatch: Inside NAWAC’s Scientific Approach to Bigfoot | James Waldo Interview
2026/08/27
What happens when researchers try to bring scientific rigor to one of the most controversial areas of paranormal research?
In this episode of Beyond the Human, we’re joined by James Waldo, a member of the North American Wood Ape Conservancy (NAWAC) and a podcaster with Seven Ages Research Associates, for an in-depth conversation about the search for Sasquatch and other cryptohominids.
Waldo discusses how he first became interested in cryptozoology and eventually became involved with NAWAC, including what the organization is, who participates in its research, and what it’s actually like to take part in an operation in the field.
We also explore how NAWAC’s goals have evolved over the course of its research, from its original objective of obtaining a wood ape specimen to its current projects and investigations. Waldo shares some of the Conservancy’s most significant findings from Area X and elsewhere, as well as the reactions their work has received from academic researchers, paranormal enthusiasts, and the broader public.
In one of the most compelling parts of the conversation, Waldo reflects on his own experiences researching Sasquatch and addresses one of the central debates within cryptohominid research: if these creatures are biological organisms, why hasn't a specimen been recovered?
Finally, we discuss a question at the heart of Beyond the Human: how can we bridge the divide between academic researchers and the popular researchers who investigate the paranormal outside of traditional institutions? And what would it take to create a more rigorous, productive conversation between the two?
From field research and cryptozoology to anthropology, science, and the boundaries of paranormal research, this conversation explores what it means to seriously investigate a phenomenon that remains deeply contested—and what researchers can learn from one another along the way.

Could Cryptohominids Be Real Animals? The Evolutionary Case for Relict Hominids
2026/08/24
Could reports of Bigfoot, Yeti, orang pendek, and other humanlike creatures represent something more than folklore?
In this episode of Beyond the Human, we begin a multi-part investigation into cryptohominids: reported humanlike beings that may represent undiscovered primates, relict populations of ancient hominids, or something stranger. We start with the flesh-and-blood hypothesis and ask whether these creatures could realistically exist within what we know about human evolution, primate biology, and ecology.
Drawing on the fossil record and discoveries of Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo floresiensis, and Homo naledi, we explore the surprisingly diverse world of our extinct relatives and why the idea of another surviving hominid isn't quite as straightforward as it might seem. We then examine the evidence researchers have collected for cryptohominids, including footprints, hair and DNA, photographs and video, vocalizations, and eyewitness testimony. From orang pendek in Sumatra and otang in South Africa to Sasquatch in North America, we look at several of the cases that flesh-and-blood researchers consider particularly intriguing. Along the way, we examine the work of researchers who have attempted to investigate these reports more systematically and ask what the current evidence can (and cannot) tell us.
This is only the beginning. In the episodes that follow, we'll hear directly from researchers in the field, including NAWAC members James Waldo and Michael Mayes, before turning to supernatural and high-strangeness explanations for the phenomenon. Finally, we'll speak with anthropologist Dr. Gregory Forth about the intersection of cryptohominids, ethnography, and human evolution.
Are cryptohominids undiscovered animals, surviving relatives of our evolutionary past, or something that doesn't fit neatly into either category? We're starting with the evidence—and letting the investigation take us from there.

Alien Bases on the Moon? UFO Claims, Martian “Ruins” & SETI’s New Astrobiology Lab
2026/08/14
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Are there extraterrestrial bases on the Moon? A new preprint from researchers at Ukraine's Main Astronomical Observatory claims that high-speed video recordings captured more than 20 unidentified objects near the Moon, including objects described as "atmospheric" and "continental" UFOs. The researchers argue that some of these objects may represent a technologically advanced civilization using the Moon as a base. We examine what the study actually claims, why its lack of peer review matters, and the methodological questions surrounding observations made with high-speed cameras.
We also take a look at a strange formation photographed by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars. The dark rectangular feature has been compared online to a doorway or entrance to an ancient structure, prompting speculation about whether Mars could once have been home to a lost civilization. But a closer look at the scale and geology tells a much less extraordinary story. We break down what Curiosity actually photographed—and why the Martian landscape is so good at producing apparent "artifacts."
Finally, we look at a major development in the scientific search for life beyond Earth. After more than 25 years of research into planetary habitability and biosignatures, NASA's Virtual Planetary Laboratory has moved to the SETI Institute, where its interdisciplinary team will continue investigating how scientists can determine whether distant worlds support life. We discuss what this means for the future of astrobiology and the search for life beyond our solar system.
Plus, we're getting ready for next week's Paranormal Research Symposium in Gettysburg, where we'll be talking about the Sallie House and the ongoing study of the paranormal.
Three stories, one briefing on the strange, the storied, and the extraordinary.

MKUltra Hearing Claims, Pre-Roswell UFO Crash & Beyond the Human Turns One
2026/07/10
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Congress revisited one of the CIA's most infamous Cold War programs as the House Oversight Committee held a hearing examining MKUltra. More than fifty years after the program officially ended, lawmakers and witnesses revisited the government's use of LSD, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, electroshock, and other controversial experiments on unwitting American citizens. We break down what was actually revealed during the hearing, why some witnesses believe the full story has yet to be uncovered, and whether the proceedings offered any genuinely new insights into one of the darkest chapters in U.S. intelligence history.
We also explore a newly released book arguing that the first alleged UFO crash retrieval in the United States occurred years before Roswell. In The UFO Bombshell Before Roswell, author Paul Blake Smith investigates the reported 1941 Cape Girardeau, Missouri, crash and the longstanding claims that the incident was quietly covered up by the government. We discuss why the case continues to intrigue UFO researchers—and preview our upcoming interview with Smith about his investigation.
Finally, we're celebrating one year of Beyond the Human and Field Notes from the Beyond. Over the past year, listeners from 52 countries have joined us in exploring the strange, the storied, and the extraordinary. What Happens When We Die? The Anthropology of Near-Death Experiences
2026/07/01
What happens when people from every culture report remarkably similar experiences while standing on the threshold of death?
In this episode of Beyond the Human, we explore near-death experiences (NDEs) through the lenses of anthropology, psychology, medicine, and consciousness research. From out-of-body experiences and life reviews to encounters with deceased loved ones and reports of profound transformation, we examine why these extraordinary experiences have been documented across cultures and throughout history.
Drawing on the work of researchers including Raymond Moody, Kenneth Ring, Bruce Greyson, and Sam Parnia, we trace the emergence of NDEs as a legitimate field of scientific inquiry while exploring the strongest evidence and the leading biological explanations. Along the way, we discuss veridical perceptions, cross-cultural patterns, the Greyson Near-Death Experience Scale, and why these experiences continue to challenge conventional assumptions about the relationship between the brain and consciousness.
Rather than arguing for a single explanation, this episode explores one of humanity's oldest questions from an anthropological perspective: what can near-death experiences reveal about consciousness, culture, and what it means to be human?
Topics discussed in this episode:
(2:40) - What are NDEs and How Common Are They?
(15:57) - What Happens During an NDE?
(26:18) - How Are NDEs Studied?
(40:33) - What is the Evidence for NDEs?

Orang Pendek Update, Celebrity UFO Claims & New Ghost Shark Discovery
2026/06/26
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Cryptozoologist Adam Thorn has shared new updates from his recent orang pendek expedition in Sumatra. Responding to questions from viewers, Thorn addresses criticism surrounding his now-viral trail camera footage before taking a closer look at the hair samples collected during the expedition. While several of the suspected hairs turned out not to be hair at all, one sample closely matches both the mysterious cinnamon-colored arm captured on camera and photographs of unidentified primate hairs from an unpublished study. Thorn says the specimen also resembles orangutan hair but not that of any other known wildlife in the region and plans to send it for expert analysis.
We also examine a string of recent celebrity claims involving the paranormal. Jersey Shore star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi once again opens up about what she believes was an alien abduction after seeing a UFO as a teenager, while actor James Franco has sparked speculation after posting a series of cryptic TikTok videos describing an encounter with a mysterious glowing-eyed entity speaking an unknown language. Is it a genuine experience, performance art, or simply promotion ahead of his return to Hollywood? We discuss the claims—and why celebrity paranormal stories continue to capture public attention.
Finally, we look at two remarkable wildlife discoveries that serve as a reminder that our planet still holds plenty of mysteries. Scientists have officially described a new species of deep-sea ghost shark discovered off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica using both anatomical and DNA evidence, while the elusive sand cat has been documented in Libya, expanding its known range beyond what researchers previously believed. These discoveries raise an intriguing question for cryptozoology: if new vertebrate species and unexpected populations continue to be found today, what else might still be waiting to be discovered?

New Government UAP Council Announced & $2.5 Million Psychic Fraud Case
2026/06/19
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has been tasked by the White House and several federal agencies with assembling a new UAP Science Advisory Council aimed at helping the government better understand the nature of unidentified anomalous phenomena. The council brings together experts from disciplines ranging from physics and computer science to psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and oceanography. We break down the council's mission, who is involved—including skeptic Michael Shermer and anthropologist Peter Skafish—and what it means that the group will operate without access to classified information while advising a larger government UAP Governance Board.
We also examine a major psychic fraud case that resulted in the indictment of a Texas couple accused of stealing more than $2.5 million from emotionally vulnerable victims. According to federal prosecutors, the pair allegedly convinced people they were suffering from curses tied to their finances and persuaded them to liquidate assets, purchase gold, and hand over large sums of money under the promise that the funds would be spiritually cleansed and returned. The case highlights the darker side of the paranormal marketplace and raises important questions about exploitation, belief, and vulnerability.
Finally, we look ahead to Litha, the Summer Solstice, which takes place this Sunday. Celebrated by many contemporary Pagans, witches, and nature-based spiritual traditions, Litha marks the longest day of the year and the moment when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. We discuss the significance of the solstice and point listeners toward our latest Field Notes from the Beyond newsletter for a deeper look at the history, folklore, and modern celebration of this important seasonal festival.

SETI Updates Alien Contact Protocols as Disclosure Movement Ramps Up
2026/06/12
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
While much of the UFO conversation has focused on declassified files, whistleblowers, and Hollywood's growing fascination with disclosure, scientists have been quietly updating the protocols that would govern humanity's response to the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence. The International Academy of Astronautics' SETI Committee has released a revised Declaration of Principles that addresses social media, artificial intelligence, researcher safety, and the increasingly complex ways scientists search for evidence of non-human civilizations. The new guidelines also reaffirm that any response to a detected signal should only occur after international consultation and not at the discretion of individual researchers.
We also examine the surprising removal of Msgr. Stephen Rossetti as principal exorcist for the Archdiocese of Washington after nearly two decades in the role. Rossetti, a priest, psychologist, author, and founder of the St. Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal, recently sparked controversy with public statements asserting that UFOs are demonic rather than extraterrestrial in origin. While Rossetti emphasized these views were his personal opinions rather than official Catholic teaching, the Church's decision has generated discussion about the intersection of religion, exorcism, and modern UFO beliefs.
Finally, we check in on the current state of the disclosure movement following a new press conference held near the U.S. Capitol. Featuring lawmakers, journalists, filmmakers, and whistleblower David Grusch, the event renewed calls for greater government transparency regarding UAPs and alleged non-human intelligences. We discuss where the movement stands after years of investigations, congressional hearings, declassified documents, and competing narratives—and why the growing debate over figures like Luis Elizondo, AARO, and the future of disclosure may leave even longtime followers struggling to keep up.

New Orang Pendek Evidence? Adam Thorn's Sumatra Expedition & Conjuring House Court Ruling
2026/06/05
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Did cryptozoologist Adam Thorn capture evidence of the elusive orang pendek? During a recent expedition to Sumatra, Thorn collected environmental DNA samples, possible hair specimens, and deployed camera traps throughout the jungle. In footage recently shared on his YouTube channel, something appears to smear mud across one camera's lens before a cinnamon-colored limb briefly comes into view. Thorn stops short of calling it proof, but says he's unsure what known animal could have produced the footage. With long-term camera traps still operating in the region, the investigation is far from over.
We also review the results of this year's annual Loch Ness Monster hunt in the Scottish Highlands. Armed with sonar systems, underwater drones, and even an autonomous submarine designed to map the loch's depths, researchers spent several days searching for evidence of Nessie. While no new discoveries were announced, the hunt comes during a year that has already produced six reported sightings, including a recent claim from an American tourist who says he captured footage of a large object breaking the surface of the water.
Finally, we break down the latest development in the ongoing Conjuring House ownership dispute. A Rhode Island judge has issued a restraining order against YouTuber Elton Castee, ruling that paranormal investigator Jason Hawes has presented sufficient evidence supporting his claim to ownership of the infamous property. The judge also found that Castee had trespassed on the property multiple times since the disputed transfer of ownership, describing the entire case as "a huge mess."

Orang Pendek Expedition 2: Sumatra's Sasquatch Caught on Camera
Pennhurst Data Center Denied & Ohio’s Loveland Frogman Bill
2026/05/29
Welcome to our new listeners!
We’ve had a lot of new followers since launching our TikTok and 250 Years of American High Strangeness series, so for those just joining us: Headlines from the Beyond is our (mostly) weekly series covering the paranormal, unexplained, and strange stories that caught our attention this week.
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
After months of hearings and intense local opposition, East Vincent Township officials have denied Pennhurst Holdings LLC’s controversial proposal to build a massive data center complex on the grounds of the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital property. The expanded plan included nearly 1.9 million square feet of development, gas-powered generators, battery storage fields, and multiple data center buildings along the Schuylkill River. Residents, firefighters, farmers, and preservation advocates raised concerns about environmental impacts, noise pollution, fire risks, and the future of one of Pennsylvania’s most infamous historic sites. Developers have already announced plans to challenge the decision in court.
We also explore Ohio’s proposed House Bill 821, a bipartisan effort to officially recognize the legendary Loveland Frogman as the state’s official cryptid. Sightings of the frog-like humanoid date back to the 1950s along the Little Miami River near Loveland, including reports from police officers and witnesses who claimed the creature walked upright—and in one case, carried a wand that emitted sparks. If passed, the bill could make Ohio the first state to formally recognize an official cryptid through legislation.
Two stories, one briefing on the strange, the storied, and the extraordinary.

Exorcism Across Cultures: Demons, Possession, and Spiritual Healing
2026/05/19
What happens when cultures around the world interpret illness, suffering, and altered states of consciousness as spiritual possession?
In this episode of Beyond the Human, we explore exorcism as a cross-cultural phenomenon, examining how different religious traditions understand spirits, possession, healing, and the supernatural.
Rather than treating exorcism as simply horror movie material, this episode approaches it through anthropology, religious studies, and the study of lived spiritual experience.
Drawing on ethnographic research and religious texts, we examine Catholic exorcism and the Roman Ritual, Muslim ruqya practices involving djinn possession, and Korean Buddhist rituals used to heal spirit-related illness and troublesome ghost encounters.
Along the way, we discuss why possession experiences across cultures often share strikingly similar features: altered states of consciousness, unusual strength, personality changes, physical symptoms, and experiences interpreted as contact with non-human entities.
From Catholic priests and Muslim raqis to Buddhist ritual specialists and spirit mediums, this episode asks a broader question: what do exorcism and possession reveal about the ways humans understand suffering, healing, evil, and the unseen world?
Rather than offering definitive answers, this episode explores the intersection of religion, anthropology, medicine, and the paranormal—and why experiences of possession continue to challenge the boundaries between belief, psychology, and reality.

Can Orang Pendek Finally Be Proven Real?
2026/05/14
This week on Headlines from the Beyond:
Will a new expedition to Sumatra finally uncover definitive evidence of the mysterious orang pendek?
Cryptohominid researcher Adam Thorn has returned to the jungles of Sumatra with a much more ambitious investigation into the legendary “little person” of Indonesian folklore. Using long-term trail camera deployment, environmental DNA sampling, footprint analysis, and primate vocalization experiments, Thorn’s new expedition represents one of the most scientific attempts yet to investigate reports of this elusive cryptohominid.
We also remember legendary Japanese horror author Koji Suzuki, the creator of Ringu and one of the pioneers of modern J-horror, whose work reshaped supernatural horror around the world.
Finally, we break down the newest developments in the ongoing legal battle surrounding the sale of the infamous Conjuring House to paranormal investigator Jason Hawes, including the dismissal of the lawsuit that temporarily halted the sale.
