English Edition - Episode 40: Medical Social Work: The Present and the Future
2026/10/20
An Interview with the Secretary-General of the Taiwan Medical Social Work Association
In hospitals, we often see physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals. But have you ever wondered:
When a person becomes ill, besides “treating the disease,” who is there to support the person’s life?
This is exactly why medical social workers exist.
In this episode, we are honored to invite the Secretary-General of the Taiwan Medical Social Work Association to join us. From the perspective of the association, we will talk about how medical social work in Taiwan has evolved over the past few years.
From education and training, professional exchange, policy advocacy, and international connection, to the continuous development of medical social workers’ professional competencies and roles—what efforts has the association made in recent years?
Beyond these efforts, we also want to ask a more realistic question:
How are medical social workers doing today?
Facing rapid changes in the healthcare environment, pressure on medical capacity and manpower, increasing workload, and issues related to professional positioning, salary, retention, and talent development, where do medical social workers stand today?
In healthcare teams, are medical social workers merely “people who help solve problems,” or can they actually become important bridges connecting healthcare, patients, families, and society?
If we extend our view further into the future, what might medical social work in Taiwan become?
This is not only a question for the association. It is also something that every medical social worker, healthcare professional, and even each of us—who may one day become a patient or family member—should care about.
Let’s listen to the Secretary-General of the Association as they share insights from the professional frontline and the association’s work, and talk with us about the present of medical social work and the future we imagine.

English Edition - Episode 39 : Do Medical Disputes Always Have to Go to Court?
2026/10/06
In the news, we occasionally see reports about “medical disputes,” “medical negligence,” “medical accidents,” or patients “suing hospitals.” Because of this, many people may assume that whenever a treatment outcome is not as expected, it becomes a medical dispute—and once a medical dispute occurs, the only option is to meet in court.
But is that really the case?
Continuing from our legal discussion in the previous episode on the “fake doctor incident,” we have invited attorney Wang Chih-Te to join us in exploring a topic that many people may encounter, yet may not truly understand: medical disputes.
🔹 What exactly counts as a medical dispute?
🔹 Does a poor treatment outcome always mean that medical negligence has occurred?
🔹 What are the differences between medical risk, medical complications, and medical disputes?
🔹 When a medical dispute occurs, does it always have to be resolved through litigation?
In reality, healthcare is full of uncertainty. Even the most skilled medical team cannot guarantee a perfect outcome for every treatment. In many situations, what patients and families hope for is not a court judgment, but a medical team that is willing to explain, accompany them, and face the problem together.
✔ When a medical dispute occurs in a hospital, how can the hospital and healthcare professionals respond?
✔ What actions taken at the very beginning may help reduce conflict and build trust?
✔ When facing the emotions of family members, what communication and legal issues should medical teams be mindful of?
✔ How can healthcare professionals balance professionalism, empathy, and self-protection?
In addition to offering perspectives from the healthcare side, we also hope this episode can help the public develop a more accurate understanding.
If you or your family members ever encounter a suspected medical dispute and do not know what to do, what resources are available to help?
Some resources that the public may use include:
• Complaint channels within hospitals
• Medical dispute mediation services provided by local government health departments
• Support and assistance from medical social workers
• Legal consultation and related remedies
We hope to help everyone understand that when facing a medical dispute, confrontation, blame, or litigation are not the only paths forward. What matters more is finding appropriate ways to communicate and access resources, so that the situation can move in a better direction.
Medical disputes are not only legal issues. They are also matters of trust, communication, and understanding between patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Whether you are a physician, nurse, healthcare professional, medical social worker, or a patient or family member who has ever walked into a hospital, we invite you to listen to this episode and gain a deeper understanding of what “medical disputes” truly mean.
Together, let us ask: beyond going to court, are there better choices available to us?

English Edition - Episode 38: Is the White Coat Real? The Fake Doctor Incident.
2026/09/22
Do you remember Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can—how effortlessly charming he was in every role he pretended to play, and how almost unbelievable his scams seemed?
Recently, a “fake doctor” incident shocked the medical community and led many people to start asking important questions:
👨⚕️ Can someone become a doctor simply by putting on a white coat?
📋 How was it possible for someone to make rounds, read medical records, and interact with patients?
🔐 If you lend your hospital account and password to someone else, could you be legally responsible?
📖 What exactly are medical records? And why does the law regulate them so strictly?
In this episode, we begin with the recent fake doctor incident at National Taiwan University Children’s Hospital, which drew widespread public attention, and use it as an entry point to help listeners understand legal concepts that are often overlooked in everyday hospital work, yet are extremely important.
In that incident, the impersonator not only wore a white coat and entered hospital wards to make rounds, but also accessed medical records and interacted with patients. The case highlighted important issues for medical institutions, including identity verification, information security, and the protection of patients’ rights.
In this episode, we will discuss:
✔ What legal responsibilities may be involved when someone impersonates a medical professional?
✔ What laws may be violated when a healthcare information system account and password are borrowed or shared? If someone uses your account to engage in illegal conduct, how should responsibility be determined?
✔ What legal protections exist for medical records, personal data, and medical privacy?
✔ Why must every healthcare professional in a hospital take information security and professional ethics seriously?
Many people believe that the law is far removed from medical work. But in reality, from logging into a system and reviewing medical records to interacting with patients every day, every seemingly ordinary part of hospital work may involve legal responsibility, patients’ rights, and trust in healthcare.
Whether you are a physician, nurse, social worker, healthcare professional, administrative staff member, or simply someone who cares about medical issues, this episode is worth listening to. Together, we will explore the essential legal knowledge in hospitals that everyone should know.
The core of healthcare is not only professionalism, but also responsibility.
And the law is not only a restriction. It is also an important foundation for protecting patients, safeguarding healthcare professionals, and maintaining trust in the medical system.

English Edition - Episode 37 : What Patients Have Taught Me
2026/09/08
We often think that we are the ones helping patients.
But after working in this field for a long time, we come to realize that, in many moments, it is the patients who are teaching us.
In Chinese culture, we are often shy about expressing love to our families and those closest to us. We hide it, leave it unspoken, or let it remain vague, even when our hearts are full.
Home, that safe harbor, is where we feel secure enough to be completely unguarded and to release all our emotions.
Yet, without realizing it, many family secrets may also be buried there.
And often, only at the very last moment of life do we realize that there is no longer enough time to pour out all the love, reluctance to let go, and apologies we have carried inside.
Working in a hospital means accompanying people from the cradle to the grave.
Through patients’ stories, we learn how to prepare ourselves for birth, aging, illness, and death.
What matters most in life may not be how much money we make from stocks, or how high we climb in our careers.
Perhaps what matters more is family, companionship, love, and whether the words left unspoken can still be said in time.
So that the deceased may rest in peace, and the living may find peace in their hearts.
So that there may be fewer regrets.
When facing disability, the loss or decline of work capacity, or the loss of health, how do we learn to accept, live in the present, let go of attachments, and keep moving forward?
The patients who taught me to cherish.
The patients who taught me to let go.
The patients who taught me courage.

English Edition - Episode 36 : Miraculous Moments in the Hospital
2026/08/25
What do you think a miracle is?
What is a miracle, really?
A miracle may be when something “impossible” becomes “possible.”
It may also be when a situation with “no hope” begins to show “a glimpse of hope.”
Miracles in the hospital are not only about overcoming illness.
Sometimes, in what seems to be a hopeless situation, unexpected change, hope, or the meaning of life quietly emerges.
A miracle means something different to everyone.
For physicians, it may be trying a new treatment with only a small hope, and then seeing an unexpectedly positive outcome.
For nurses, it may be a comatose patient they have been caring for suddenly waking up.
For patients, it may be believing there is no way out, yet being given a chance at life again.
For social work partners, it may be finding a small opening in a situation that had long been stuck.
It may be finding family members who had been out of contact for years, finding a way for a patient to be discharged smoothly, or finding a source of financial assistance…
Or perhaps, it is that we have not been swallowed up by the system.
Although the system is never perfect, there are always people willing to take that one extra step.
A miracle does not always mean that an illness has been cured.
Sometimes, it means that even in the midst of hardship, people still manage to find hope, love, and strength.
