In Mark 1:29–34, Jesus heals Simon Peter's mother-in-law before an entire city begins gathering at the door, bringing the sick and oppressed to Him. Her immediate response is to get up and serve. Not every follower of Christ has experienced the physical healing they've prayed for. But every Christian can say that Jesus has rescued, forgiven, restored, and made them spiritually alive. Andy and Kathy explore not only the healing power and compassion of Jesus, but our response when He changes our life. We don't serve Jesus so that He will heal us. We serve because of what He has already done for us. If you've been changed by Jesus, what should your life look like in response?

The people were astonished at His teaching. Then they were amazed when even the demons obeyed His command. But is being amazed by Jesus enough? In Mark 1:21–28, Jesus enters the synagogue at Capernaum and immediately demonstrates an authority unlike anything the people have experienced. Andy and Kathy explore one of the dangers of encountering Jesus without actually responding to Him. We can admire His teaching, be impressed by His power, attend church, study the Bible, and even be emotionally moved, yet remain unchanged. The question isn't simply whether we recognize Jesus’ authority. The question is whether we submit to it.

As Jesus walks beside the Sea of Galilee, He finds four ordinary fishermen and changes the direction of their lives with two words: “Follow me.” In Mark 1:16–20, Andy and Kathy explore the calling of Simon, Andrew, James, and John, and what their stories teach us about our own. Jesus begins not with how we found Him, but with how He came looking for us. How did Jesus find you? Through a parent? A friend? A church? A difficult season? Someone willing to share the Gospel? Every follower of Jesus has a different story of how He reached them, but every story ultimately begins with the same grace: Jesus came looking for us and called us to follow.

Mark's Gospel is moving, and now the urgency becomes impossible to miss. Immediately after His baptism, the Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness to face Satan. Then Jesus emerges in Galilee with an announcement that changes everything: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” In Mark 1:12–15, Andy and Kathy explore the temptation of Jesus, Mark's repeated use of “immediately,” what Jesus means by the Kingdom of God, and the two responses He demands: repent and believe. Jesus doesn't present the Gospel as something to consider someday. The King has come. The Kingdom is near. The time to respond is now.

Before Jesus preaches a sermon, performs a miracle, or calls a disciple, heaven tells us who He is. In Mark 1:9–11, Jesus is baptized, the heavens are torn open, the Spirit descends, and the Father's voice declares, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Andy and Kathy explore why Jesus was baptized, the Jewish background behind this heavenly affirmation, and the powerful echoes of Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42 in the Father's words. Jesus is being revealed as God's beloved Son, the promised King, and the faithful Servant. Mark is moving quickly, but he won't let us rush past the most important question in the Gospel: Who is Jesus? Before we see what Jesus does, we need to know who He is.

Mark begins his Gospel with urgency. There's no birth narrative, no genealogy, and almost no introduction. Jesus is coming, and John the Baptist has one job: get people ready. In Mark 1:1–8, Andy and Kathy explore why Mark begins with John the Baptist, what it means to “prepare the way of the Lord,” and why repentance is central to John's message.
