2026/10/22
The best Jellicle Choice you can make is listening to this episode about Cats (2019)! To continue our Cellulloyd Webber month, Grace and Scott are joined by co-host of Cinema Shame and bad movie aficionado Allan Mott to talk about Tom Hooper's much maligned adaptation of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats. Why do they have human noses? Why is Rebel Wilson here? What even is a Jellicle Cat? We attempt to answer all these burning questions and more about the bizarre film starring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jason Derulo, Frencesca Hayward, and many more cat-humans.  Follow Allan on bluesky @houseofglib, Cinema Shame on bluesky @cinemashame, and watch Allan's Pecha Kucha presentation on his love for bad movie musicals on youtube here Connect with us on Instagram @bigwhiteelephantspod and send emails or voicemails to [email protected] so we can share them on future episodes! 2026/10/15
On Episode 66 Grace and Scott are joined by returning guest Kev for week three of Cellulloyd Webber Month: The Films of the Musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber. This week we're going to the auditorium to see the 1999 straight-to-TV adaptation of Webber and Tim Rice's first professional musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999)! Directed by David Mallet and Steven Pimlott (restaging much of his 1991 West End Revival of the show), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat stars Donny Osmond as Jacob's favorite son who can interpret dreams, is sold into slavery by his brothers, and becomes BFFs with the Pharaoh!  Find Kev on letterboxd and listen to Austin Danger Podcast and Laurie Strode Trap House wherever you get your podcasts Connect with us on Instagram @bigwhiteelephantspod and send emails or voicemails to [email protected] so we can share them on future episodes! 65. Evita (1996)
2026/10/08
Cellulloyd Webber month keeps rollin' rollin' rollin' on out with our discussion of Evita (1996). Grace and Scott try to understand 20th century Argentinian history and politics, discuss Madonna's (mis)casting, and attempt to understand why Andrew Lloyd Webber Musicals are so hard to put on film. Evita, directed by Alan Parker and based on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's concept album and stage show of the same name, stars Madonna as Eva Perón, Antonia Banderas as an unnamed narrator who may or may not be Che Guevara, and Jonathan Pryce as Juan Perón. The newly added song, "You Must Love Me" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, beating out Diane Warren and Adam Schlesinger's "That Thing You Do!", which in one host's opinion is a travesty.  Connect with us on Instagram @bigwhiteelephantspod and send emails or voicemails to [email protected] so we can share them on future episodes! 63. My Fair Lady (1964)
2026/09/24
Oi, guvnah! We gots a new episode for ya, we has. I tell ya it's a good one too, I reckon! We talk about Professor 'enry 'iggins and all the mean things 'e does to poor li'l Eliza Doolittle. Poor girl! 'e says she don't know 'ow to speak English! I 'eard 'er myself, though, I has. More pleasin' to me than what 'e 'as to say! Ok, can we stop with this bit? It's an episode on My Fair Lady (1964). Audrey Hepburn does a cockney accent until she doesn't. Rex Harrison speaks through every song. There are really pretty dresses! Is the movie itself misogynistic and classist or is that just the characters? We attempt to figure it out! Written by Lerner and Loewe and directed by George Cukor, My Fair Lady was the most expensive movie ever made at the time ($17 million--which is like $180 million in today's money!), but was also a huge hit, winning 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture.  Connect with us on Instagram @bigwhiteelephantspod and send emails or voicemails to [email protected] so we can share them on future episodes! 62. Les Misérables (2012)
2026/09/17
For episode 62, Grace and Scott are headed to the barricade! It's time to talk about Tom Hooper's Les Misérables (2012). Why is Russell Crowe singing? Why is Hugh Jackman singing like that. Why is the camera so close to everyone's face? These are the kinds of questions we attempt to answer. Directed by Tom Hooper and based on the stage musical of the same name by Boublil, Schönberg, and Kretzmer, Les Misérable--or Les Miz if you're freaky--stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tviet, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and more in the epic retelling of mid 19th century French struggles. The film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, winning 3, for Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. 61. Josie and the Pussycats (2001) with Morgan Roberts
2026/09/10
For episode 61, Grace and Scott are joined by Morgan Roberts to talk about Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont's Josie and the Pussycats (2001).  We talk early 2000's MTV and pop culture, the baffling--and sexist--reaction to the movie on its release, satirical product placement, and more! Written and Directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont based on the Archie Comics characters, Josie and the Pussycats stars Rachel Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson with Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, and Missi Pyle delivering stellar supporting performances and cameos from Carson Daly, Aries Spears, Eugene Levy and the boy band sensation DuJour! 60. The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (1982)
2026/09/03
To honor the life and career of the great Dolly Parton, we're heading down south to visit the Best Little Whorehouse In Texas! We talk about dancing college football players, decriminalizing sex work, the Oscar-nominated performance from Charles Durning, and--of course--the effervescence of Dolly Parton. Directed by Colin Higgins of 9 To Five fame, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas is based off the stage musical of the same name with music and lyrics by Carol Hall and a script by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson. The story is based on the real life Chicken Ranch in LaGrange, Texas which operated from 1905 until it was shut down in 1973 under similar circumstances as portrayed in the film. The movie stars Dolly Parton, Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLouise, Charles Durning, and Jim Nabors. 2026/08/06

To kick it off, we're joined by writer Brittany Spanos (Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, more!). 55. One Touch Of Venus (1948) and The Odyssey (2026)
2026/07/30
For episode 55, Grace and Scott can't help themselves but go long on their thoughts about the new Christopher Nolan film, The Odyssey—even though it's not a musical! Then we shift over to another film dealing with mythology that's honestly only slightly more of a musical, 1948's One Touch Of Venus, starring Ava Gardner, Rober Walker, Tom Conway, and Eve Arden. If you kissed a statue of a God and it came to life, would you fumble her? Eddie Hatch is trying his best! William A. Seiter's film cuts out almost all of the Kurt Weill songs from the original stage musical, and we decide if that makes this a Big White Elephants. Next week we start Camp BWE! Big White Elephants is a podcast where two friends, Grace and Scott, dissect movie musicals: Everything from DCOMs to MGM Classics, Japanese Punk Rock films to modern Jukebox Musicals, and all kinds of things in between! We talk about what works and what doesn't, and whether a film is a 'Big White Elephant', based on director Rob Marshall's quote ”The thing about movie musicals is that there have been some brilliant ones, but when they’re bad, they’re really bad - big white elephants.” Join us every Thursday to discuss a new musical film wherever you get your podcasts
54. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2001)
2026/07/23
Everyone's talkin' about The Odyssey, so for episode 54, Grace and Scott give the people what they want: a discussion of the Coen Brothers' 2001 musical adaptation of Homer's epic, O Brother, Where Art Thou? No IMAX cameras were used in the production of this film, but it has some things Christopher Nolan never will: bluegrass music, George Clooney in a fake beard, a one-eyed John Goodman, and a soundtrack that was so beloved it won the Grammy for Album Of The Year! Written and Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, who claim to have never read The Odyssey, with music curated by T Bone Burnett and innovative cinematography by Rodger Deakins, O Brother, Where Art Thou stars George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson with a deep bench of character actors like Holly Hunter, Stephen Root, Chris Thomas King, John Goodman, Charles Durning, and many more. Big White Elephants is a podcast where two friends, Grace and Scott, dissect movie musicals: Everything from DCOMs to MGM Classics, Japanese Punk Rock films to modern Jukebox Musicals, and all kinds of things in between! 53. La La Land (2016) with Ryan and Sean
2026/07/15
It's the one-year anniversary of the Big White Elephants Podcast! And to celebrate, Grace and Scott are joined by returning guest Ryan Pak and first timer (and Grace's brother) Sean for our biggest episode yet. The group discusses the monumental and potentially polarizing 2016 original movie musical written and directed by Damien Chazelle, La La Land. Ten years on, how does it hold up? Does the lush color, grand scope, and ornate score elevate this to Classic status, or does the meandering plot, aggressive camera movement, and detours into jazz-splaining make it a Big White Elephant? Maybe it's something in between! With songs by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul, a script by director Damien Chazelle, and performances by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, La La Land fell just short of winning Best Picture at the Oscars, but how will it fare with the open minded and open-hearted hosts of Big White Elephants? Listen to Ryan Pak's podcast Soundtrack Your Life wherever you get your podcasts and listen to Sean's bands Six Flags Guy and The HouseGuest Big White Elephants is a podcast where two friends, Grace and Scott, dissect movie musicals: Everything from DCOMs to MGM Classics, Japanese Punk Rock films to modern Jukebox Musicals, and all kinds of things in between!
