Description
For over 40 years, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist David Swanson has covered war zones (from Bosnia to Afghanistan to Iraq), natural disasters (the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, the LA Fires) and even red carpets. But, while David's photos can tell you what it looked like standing where he stood in order to take those news photos, they can't tell you what it felt like standing there. Those are the stories this podcast will tell! Journalism doesn't get any more personal than this. Or more compelling. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S2E10 Out Of Body, Out Of mind
2026/10/27
IN THIS EPISODE Over the last 17 years, photojournalist Mark Abramson has covered stories about immigration, faith and – like the rest of us – whatever’s happening in the immediate here and now. But one of his passion projects has taken him to a whole other kind of front line. One inside the heads of people experiencing extreme PTSD – like soldiers. As you’re about to hear, there really are all different kinds of “front lines”.

S2E9 It's In The Bag
2026/10/20
IN THIS EPISODE Jim Domke was a newspaper photographer working in Philadelphia, dealing with the ordinary workaday problems of transporting all of one's gear, which there can be a lot of, and also having it handy. Jim noticed that his particular needs, any photojournalist, were not being met by anything bag-like on the market. So he did what clever, innovative people always do. He created his ideal perfect bag himself and that bag was so good that when other photographers saw it, they wanted one too and thus the Domke bag as a business was born.

S2E8 The Professional
2026/10/13
IN THIS EPISODE You may not know Chip Somodevilla’s name, but you most definitely have seen his work. Many times. A photojournalist and staff photographer for Getty Images, Chip covers the White House – a fascinating place to cover in times like these. He’s been doing what he’s doing for as long as he has not just because he’s so good at it – which, of course, he is - but because he understands his unusual working environment and how to navigate it regardless of who is in power. There's really only oe word to describe Chip Somodevilla - he's a professional, a consummate professional.

S2E7 Ethan Swope Is Going Places
2026/10/06
IN THIS EPISODE Photojournalist Ethan Swope has a name like a movie hero and, though he's still relatively new to the job, he's already made it to the front page of the New York Times, been published in TIME, via the AP, Getty, Bloomberg and outlets worldwide covering everything from the California wildfires to the war in Ukraine. As a measure of his precosity, he was named 2022 Student Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association. As if that weren't enough, Ethan's a cinematographer, too. As you'll hear, Ethan doesn't just have a name like a movie hero, he's kinda lived his professional life that way, too.

S2E6 No Hurdle Too High
2026/09/29
IN THIS EPISODE Photojournalism is often physically chellenging. One often has to move quickly - in a hostile environement - either to get the photo or get to safety. It's
hard enough doing it with four working limbs. This episode will introduce you to two photojournalists who do the job in spite of physical challenges that most people would allow to limit them. John Putman and Ben Hanson are both photojournalist warriors, willing to go wherever they believe the best shot is - the one that best tells the story they're covering.

S2E5 Manage My Energy

IN THIS EPISODE Photojournalist Zin Chiang is fearless, intrepid and quite willing to put everything on the line. Her work focuses on urban societies; she's deeply interested in how inequity in resources can lead to conflict and displacement. She also focuses on human migration and the unexpected challenges that come from it.

S2E4 Mountains Beyond Mountains
2026/09/15
IN THIS EPISODE On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake centered near the town of Léogâne (about 15 miles west of Port-au-Prince). Somewhere between 220,000 to 300,000 people died and roughly 300,000 people suffered injuries. In all, over 1.5 million Haitians were left homeless in the quake's immediate aftermath. Not exactly the kind of place normall people would want to run to. But then no one said photojournalists were "normal". Of all the troubled places David has visited, Haiti is one of the few he'd actually like to return to. How a place gets under your skin - that's a lot of what this episode is about.

9-11 Rewind: They Looked Like Ghosts
2026/09/11
IN THIS EPISODE Even 25 years after it happened, 911 still haunts us. Photos from that day can still take us back to that day and all the complex emotions we felt. In this episode, David and photojournalists SPENCER PLATT and MARIO TAMA will discuss the photos they took that day that became iconic. While others rushed away from the twin towers as they burned and then collapsed, some people - first responders and journalists - ran toward the catastrophe. But even being in the right time and place doesn't guarantee you'll walk away with a photograph that will be part of how America visualizes that terrible day.

S2E3 What Cancer Has Taught Me
2026/09/08
IN THIS EPISODE In this season's first episode, David told the chronologicall tick tock of his cancer journey - how the growing lump at the side of his tongue began to take over his entire life. Surviving cancer has its challenges. But, having survived cancer, David became increasingly aware of all the things having and getting free of cancer has taught him.

S2E2 Four Dead In Ohio
2026/09/01
IN THIS EPISODE Being in the right place at the right time is key to getting great, iconic photos that not only endure, but impact change at the moment of their release. John Filo was 21, newly attending Ohio's Kent State when an anti-Vietnam War rally began. Drawn outside by the noise, John saw a line of Ohio National Guards facing off against the students, a few of whom threw rocks at the soldiers. No one expected the National Guard troops to open fire on the students, but they did. And John's photos not only became iconic, but changed America's attitude toward the war. In this episode, John goes on a granular deep dive into that day and those photos, how they came to be, and how taking them changed his career and life.

S2E1 Not Dead Yet
2026/08/25
IN THIS EPISODE At the end of season 1, David stepped away from the podcast to deal with tongue cancer, most likely the result of, among other things, breathing the air around ground zero in lower Manhattan after 9-11. David was one of a handful of photojournalists inside the zone right after the attack. He also covered the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and experienced more than a few burn pits and their toxic spew. David will tell the story of how he dealt with this equally terrifying and fascinating event in his lifie - and how he's learned to live with "The Big C" and get on with his life. That includes getting back to work as a photojournalist!

Season 2 Promo
2026/08/18
In season one of my podcast, “Just The Photographer”, I told you about my journalistic compulsion to go to dangerous places – like lower Manhattan on 9-11, war zones like Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, and wherever natural disasters strike – so as to tell their stories in real time. But, while a photo can tell its audience what it looked like in that dangerous place, it can’t tell what it felt like. That’s what the podcast is for.
At the end of season one, I had to step away to visit a more personal war zone: I had succumbed to cancer of the tongue – very likely the result of breathing so much toxic air while on the job. In season two, we’ll pick up where we left off.
I’ll tell you about my ongoing war with cancer and how things are going on that front. Spoiler alert: for the moment, they’re going quite well. I’ll take you on assignment with me, whether it’s to cover the wild fires in LA, civil unrest or any other story. If I’m shooting it, you’re hearing about it!
And I’ll continue to introduce you to more of the amazing people who call themselves photojournalists. We’ll talk about what motivates them both personally and artistically. And, as always, we’ll talk about what it took to capture their best shot ever.
There’s still so much more to tell about what it feels like covering dangerous but important stories. But cover these stories, we must. If we don’t cover them – if we don’t tell these stories – it will be like they never happened at all.
That’s Just The Photographer with David Swanson. Find it wherever you find your favorite podcasts or at Costard and Touchstone dot com.

S1E3 When A War Comes To You
2025/08/15
THE BLURB: In his new book "UNREMITTING", former USA Today journalist and editorial page writer GREGG ZOROYA tells the story of The Battle of Ramadi - the battle where David got shot in the arm. In fact, David is one of the characters in Gregg's amazing book. What's especially ironic - because David and a German photographer were the only journalists covering the story in real time, David didn't know many of the details of the battle until he read Gregg's compelling, moment-to-moment account of it.
SHOW NOTES
Gregg Zoroya worked as a journalist with USA Today from 1998-2022, moving from human interest features and general assignment reporting to war coverage and finally to a beat assignment specially created for his talents that focused on the impact of combat on troops and their families. He completed his career with the paper as a member of the editorial board and an editorial writer.
You can find Gregg Zoroya's's "UNREMITTING" at Amazon, Goodreads or Barnes & Noble. You can also find it at most independent book stores. Please support them!

S1E2 In Country
2025/08/08
THE BLURB: In this episode, David takes you "In Country" with him - right to the middle of war, chaos and danger. He shares the surprising joys and camaraderie that spring from war zones and the strangely disconnected experience of being shot in battle. In war zones, all normal rules of civility vanish. Normalcy itself vanishes. That's what makes being in country such an unpredictable, terrifying yet exhilarating experience.
Show Notes
Being “in country” means literally being there. In the middle of whatever you were assigned to cover.
Since we’re talking about war zones (in this episode), we’re talking about how being in places where death happens all around you changes you.

S1E1 Stories My Photos CAN'T Tell
2025/08/01
THE BLURB: Meet David Swanson, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist. In this thumbnail introduction to the real world of photojournalism, David tells the stories of how he became a photojournalist and how being one has impacted every facet of his life. It's impossible to see and photograph wars, natural disasters and life's strange twists and turns without getting impacted in return. But, as crazy and chaotic as war zones can be, they can be surprisingly life-affirming, too.
SHOW NOTES
Over the course of his 40+ year Pulitzer Prize winning career, David Swanson has pointed his cameras at everything from wars (Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq) to natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina, the Earthquake in Haiti) to Red Carpet Events like the Oscars. Of course, in order to point his camera at those events, David had to be in all those places confronting wars, natural disasters and red carpet events. David cut his photojournalism teeth covering local news around York, PA where he grew up. He began his career interning at newspapers like The Los Angeles Times before settling in for the long haul at The Philadelphia Inquirer for whom David covered Bosnia, Katrina, Iraq and Afghanistan (among other news events).
