Bhim was the son of Kumbhkaran, the brother of Ravan, and his wife Karkati. Since childhood, he had never seen his father, and as he grew older, his curiosity grew stronger, he wanted to know who his father was. One day, he asked his mother, and Karkati told him the whole truth, how Lord Vishnu’s seventh avatar, Shri Ram, had killed both Ravan and Kumbhkaran in battle. Her words lit a fire of revenge inside Bhim. He began a strict penance, so intense that it pleased Lord Brahma. He asked for a boon of undefeatable strength from Lord Brahma. As soon as he received the boon, Bhim built an army and started attacking the gods. Eventually, he reached the kingdom of Kamrup, which was ruled by King Sudakshin, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. King Sudakshin fought Bhim, but was defeated and thrown into prison. Even in jail, the king didn’t give up. He made a Shivling out of clay and continued to worship Lord Shiva. When Bhim found out, he was enraged. He went himself and raised his sword to break the Shivling. According to the Shiv Puran, before creation began, there existed only one formless consciousness, the Supreme Brahma. That very consciousness took on two forms: a male form, which became Lord Shiva, and a female form, which became Mother Shakti. From these two emerged Purush (Vishnu) and Prakriti (his divine consort), and from them, the entire universe was created. Lord Shiva gave Vishnu and Prakriti a divine city for their meditation, a city five kos long and five kos wide, and he named it Kashi. But Lord Vishnu’s penance was so intense, that his body began to sweat, and the sweat kept increasing, until it started flooding the entire city of Kashi. In the middle of the ocean waves stood Darukvan, a forest ruled by the demon Daruk and his wife Daruka, where their terror had spread far and wide. They would often disrupt sacred rituals, leaving the sages and monks in constant distress. When the suffering became unbearable, the forest dwellers turned to Rishi Aurva for help. With his deep penance, the gods appeared, but Daruka was protected, because of a boon from Goddess Parvati. Using that power, Daruka lifted the entire forest and took it under the sea. But even under the ocean, the demons didn’t stop. One day, they captured a boat full of travelers. Among the prisoners was a man named Supriya, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. A long time ago, a devoted Brahmin named Sudharma and his wife Sudeha lived with the deep desire of having a child. After many painful years, Sudeha decided to get her husband married to her younger sister, Ghushma. Ghushma was a gentle and deeply religious woman, fully immersed in the worship of Lord Shiva. Every day, she would make clay Shivlings, worship them with full devotion, and then immerse them in a nearby pond. When her vow was complete, she was blessed with a son. Joy filled the whole family.
