In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss loaded fishing rods, hot jails, and washing machine funerals, as well as the actual contents of Nancy Drew… Trouble Shooter (1939)! This time, we recorded our predictions before the movie, then recorded a watch-along movie commentary track (which you can listen to while watching the movie for free on YouTube), with our commentary starting at 8:06 and continuing until 1:16:35. So if you don’t want to hear that part, you can absolutely listen to just the first eight minutes, then skip to the 1:16:35 timestamp to hear our after-the-movie impressions and segments! Leave a review or write in on our website to let us know whether you prefer how we podcasted about Movie 1 or Movies 2 and 3, so that we know what listeners prefer! :) To see visuals of the images discussed in this (or any) episode, go to patreon.com/nancydrew (images are not behind a paywall)! In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss Muppet names, Nancy’s D&D modifiers, and Muenster cheese, as well as the actual contents of The Secret of the Old Clock (1930)! NOTE: We apologize for any drop in audio quality for this episode (Meghan has some Life Stuff right now, so Colleen did both the rough edit and attempted to do some of Meghan’s fine-tuning, but does not have quite the ear/experience that Meghan has, so Colleen would like to take total credit for any weird editing moments you may or may not hear. Maybe you won’t notice any! In which case we can stop being such perfectionists, LOL.) NOTE: We apologize for how late this arrived in your podcast feed; there was an RSS feed situation (which is why multiple past episodes also weren’t appearing on YouTube for a while), and also for any drop in audio quality for this episode (Meghan has some Life Stuff right now, so Colleen did both the rough edit and attempted to do some of Meghan’s fine-tuning, but does not have quite the ear/experience that Meghan has, so Colleen would like to take total credit for any weird editing moments you may or may not hear. NOTE: This episode, unlike the episodes in our main feed, contains swear words, so it is not necessarily family-friendly! Due to a combination of two tech weeks in a row for two different back-to-back plays (Colleen), a terribly-timed case of strep throat (Colleen), and technical difficulties (somehow, also Colleen), there is no regular episode this weekend, so we hope you enjoy the combined bloopers from our 5th-9th episodes! If you like these and want the bloopers for each episode to be in your feed at the same time as each actual episode is, please consider becoming a Patreon supporter at patreon.com/nancydrew (and, again, we apologize for the lack of a regular episode; thanks for your patience).

In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss American cheese wrappers, unpasteurized milk, and advice for the criminals in this book to do their crimes better, as well as the actual contents of The Whispering Statue (1970)! In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss becoming a squid, badly-labeled books, and the benefits of administering stimulants to (fictional) children, as well as the actual contents of The Mystery of the Ivory Charm (1974)! Note: There are very brief mentions in this episode of the child abuse in this book (7:27-7:30 and 1:00:55-1:00:59) and there is a brief discussion of a character’s suicide attempt (1:01:55-1:02:57). Additionally, this 1974 book does not do a great job of portraying characters from/in India, just so you’re aware going in. We cover the things they do somewhat well with and the things that…have aged badly…but we wanted to let people up front. If that’s not your cup of tea, obviously feel free to skip this episode. As a palate cleanser, we would like to recommend Supriya Kelkar’s awesome middle grade book American As Paneer Pie (2020), a story of identity and navigating differences as your community feels like it’s changing around you, with positive representation of Indian-American characters! In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss talking goats, barking boyfriends, and fish balls, as well as the actual contents of The Message in the Hollow Oak (1972)! Note: In this 1972 book, the characters are on an archeological dig, spending most of the time at the dig exhuming indigenous bodies and their artifacts, and not being, shall we say, culturally sensitive in any way, shape, or form. We don’t talk about it the entire episode, but it is the setting of the book, so it does get discussed. If that’s not your cup of tea, obviously feel free to skip this episode. In this episode, Meghan and Colleen discuss fishmongers, The Gift of the Magi, and twin criminals (twiminals?), as well as the actual contents of The Clue in the Broken Locket (1965)! Note: In this episode, the child abuse that takes place in this book is discussed, though not in great detail. If you’d like to skip those parts, we recommend skipping over the following timestamps: a brief mention at 0:05:13, and discussion from 0:11:48-0:13:00 and 1:15:56-1:16:59. Take care of yourselves, and if you’d like to read a middle grade book that does contain child abuse but also features the protagonists getting into a healthy foster care situation and learning how to deal with their trauma, Colleen recommends Fighting Words by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, which won the 2021 Newbery Honor Award, and which Colleen specifically thinks is one of the best depictions of this topic in children’s literature (though definitely check the content warnings ahead of time if needed because there are a lot).
