We are fighting to save this dog and honestly it's not going to be easy but we have an idea! AND JUST WAIT until you hear Zach's story of recovery, how dogs helped save his life, and why the exact things a struggling dog needs are often the things a struggling human needs, too. Together, they break down the 6 rules Zach says can change a life: rules, boundaries, discipline, exercise, purpose, and affection. Zach explains how caring for dogs gave him the structure he couldn't give himself and ultimately helped rebuild his life. And then Zach explains the Positive Change Program, which brings shelter dogs into prisons where incarcerated people train and rehabilitate them. The dogs get the skills they need to become adoptable, while the people caring for them get responsibility, purpose, connection, and a chance to build a different future. Some participants have gone on to become professional dog trainers after leaving prison. What happens when your dream project turns into a six-month nightmare before it even gets started? Groom a shelter dog here! https://rockykanaka.com/groom This week, we're sharing the story behind our new shelter grooming van - why we bought it, how grooming can save dogs' lives, and the unexpected mechanical problems that nearly stopped the mission before it began. We talk about why so many shelter dogs never receive the grooming they desperately need, how a simple bath can dramatically increase adoption chances, and our vision of bringing mobile grooming services to shelters across the country. We also break down the costly repairs, disappointing experience with the seller, and why we're still committed to making this dream a reality despite every setback. Finally, we introduce this week's Adoptable Dog of the Week, Violet, the very first dog to receive a makeover in our grooming van and a transformation you won't want to miss. See how a simple repair turned into a major financial loss. This video documents the reality of discovering severe rust and corrosion on a propane tank during a routine inspection. If you own an RV or vehicle with propane systems, you need to understand the safety risks and the potential for a massive repair bill that sometimes just isn't worth fixing. We break down the specific repair quote of over $1,800 and why it forced the decision to sell the entire unit for a much bigger loss than $5,400 Many owners underestimate the danger of corrosion on gas lines. This breakdown highlights why catching maintenance nightmares early is critical before they snowball into thousands of dollars in damages. We discuss the hard reality of walking away from a project when the repair costs outweigh the value of the asset. Subscribe for weekly maintenance breakdowns and real-world project updates. Selma Blair shares her go to coffee order, gets venerable and at the end of the episode has us all cracking up! 😂❤️ In this deeply personal episode of Dogs and Coffee, the iconic Selma joins Rocky and Kelly to share the years of unexplained symptoms, exhaustion, and self-doubt that came long before her MS diagnosis. She opens up about what it was like trying to hide symptoms she couldn't explain, why finally getting a diagnosis brought relief, and how learning to trust herself changed everything. At the center of her story is Scout, her remarkable service dog, who became much more than a mobility companion. Selma shares how Scout helped restore her confidence, supported her through daily life with MS and POTS, learned to remind her when it was time for medication, and gave her the courage to keep showing up—even on the hardest days. The conversation also explores the emotional realities of chronic illness, losing friendships, finding purpose through vulnerability, and why dogs have an incredible ability to make us feel seen when the world doesn't. There are plenty of laughs too, from Scout's obsession with treats and his refusal to swim, to stories from movie sets and Selma's refreshingly honest sense of humor. If you've ever struggled to trust your own body, cared for someone facing chronic illness, or experienced the unconditional love of a dog, this episode is for you. What do you do when the place you're building to help rescue dogs becomes the target of theft, vandalism, and repeated break-ins? This week, we're pulling back the curtain on something we've been dealing with at Flip Farms. Over the past few weeks, we've been hit by multiple robberies and acts of vandalism, and honestly, it's been frustrating, confusing, and at times pretty heartbreaking. We talk through what happened, how it's affected us, and what it feels like when a place you're pouring your heart into suddenly doesn't feel quite as safe. We also get into the emotional side of it all—the self-blame, the sleepless nights, the challenge of staying open and welcoming while figuring out how to better protect the farm, the animals, and the future we're trying to build here. But it's not all heavy. We share some of the bright spots too, including the launch of our new rescue coffee truck, an incredible turnout from the community at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, and some of the lessons we learned from our very first event. We also talk about Flip Farms, where it's headed, and why we're more committed than ever to creating a place that brings people together around rescue, coffee, and community. And because Flip is at the heart of everything we do, I share a special moment that reminded me why this whole journey started in the first place with my soul dog, Flip. Then we wrap up with this week's Adoptable Dog of the Week, Blossom, a beautiful Great Pyrenees who's discovering that people can be kind, safe, and worth trusting after a difficult start in life. Jackson Galaxy is known worldwide as the cat behavior expert and host of My Cat From Hell, but his journey to becoming a pro didn't come in a straight line. Before the structure and stability, there was a struggle with addiction - until he walked into an animal shelter and found his purpose. In this episode, Jackson opens up about the realities of his past and how committing to the animals that no one else chose quietly started changing him back. We also dive deep into the broken shelter system, why he champions feral and community cats, and his famous "Seven Deadly Cat Sins" (including why you should never squirt your cat with water or declaw them). Plus, Jackson reviews some interesting pet toys, talks about the surprising discovery of a half-sister, and shares memories of his soul pets, Rudy and Velouria. Then, we wrap up with "Kelly's Always Right" and introduce this week's adoptable dog, Kaiser - a scruffy, 10-month-old terrier mix from Jersey who is great with cats! Get Flip Coffee and Help Dogs Here: https://www.flipcoffee.com Bobby Berk joins Rocky and Kelly for a conversation that is funny, deeply personal, and surprisingly emotional, starting with the story of a young kid in rural Missouri secretly redecorating his bedroom because he instinctively understood how space could affect the way a person feels. From there, Bobby opens up about growing up in a small town where he felt forced to hide who he was, the moment he realized he had to leave home at just 15 years old, and how survival mode eventually turned into ambition. He shares stories from telemarketing call centers, Applebee's shifts, sleeping in dorm rooms and cars, and the unexpected journey that eventually led him to New York City and the creation of his own furniture company. Bobby breaks down how he accidentally became a designer, why he never thought he was qualified for the industry, and how learning to "sell himself" became the key to building a business and eventually landing Queer Eye. He also reflects on the emotional impact of the show, the kindness of its fanbase, and what it felt like when strangers started sharing stories about how the show changed their lives. The conversation also dives into Bobby's relationship with his mini labradoodle Bimini, whose separation anxiety completely changed the rhythm of his home life and travel habits. Bobby shares why he refuses to design around fear of pets making messes, why dogs deserve to feel fully at home, and how your environment can dramatically affect your mental health. From there, Henrik breaks down the mindset behind building BarkBox, Bark in the Belly, and Bark Air, the first airline designed entirely around dogs. Henrik shares why he rejects the idea of "playbook founders," why he trusts instinct over consensus, and why he still stands by the straight-shooting comments he made in an Animal Planet pitch meeting with Rocky years ago. He also opens up about idea generation, risk, creative friction, and why solving problems for dogs is often easier, and more joyful, than solving them for humans. PLUS: Rocky and Kelly pitch Henrik a few business ideas of their own. Will they fly? ------ Dogs and Coffee Podcast by Rocky Kanaka and Kelly Kanaka where they talk all things dogs and coffee. Get Flip Coffee and Help Dogs Here: https://www.flipcoffee.com Actor and storyteller Sarah Drew joins Rocky and Kelly for a warm, candid, funny, and deeply heartfelt conversation about the dog who shaped her life: a blue-heeler mix named Lucy. You know Sarah from Grey's Anatomy, Guiding Emily, and her holiday mystery series Mistletoe Murders. But behind the roles is a story that spans intuition, devotion, motherhood, major life changes, and the kind of bond dog people understand instantly. Sarah shares how Lucy became her "first baby," how she seemed to sense every major shift in Sarah's life before it happened,  including circling her protectively when she was pregnant without knowing,  and how she stayed steady through cross-country shoots, building a family, and long days on set. She also opens up about Lucy's final chapter: the three separate times Sarah's family thought it was the end… and how Lucy kept choosing to stay just a little longer. BUT! This is Dogs & Coffee, so it's not all tears. Sarah tells the story of a cat on set who nearly staged a coup, Rocky becomes an official "dog sleuth," and we get a window into Sarah's Americano-with-cream-and-Splenda coffee order. This episode is a cozy holiday hug for dog lovers, mystery fans, and anyone who's ever been changed by an animal.
