Your Home Has a Story to Tell. Are You the Main Character?
2026/10/13
Your Home Has a Story to Tell. Are You the Main Character?Have you ever looked around your home and thought about how much of you is reflected in it? As furniture artists, we spend so much time creating beautiful pieces for other people's homes that we sometimes forget to use those same talents in our own. You know that old saying about the cobbler's children having no shoes? Well, let's make sure that doesn't describe us! In this episode, I'm sharing some of the creative projects I've done around our home, from transforming an antique door into entryway décor to turning an old window into wall art and using specialty paints and stencils to make our master bedroom hallway uniquely ours. Along the way, we'll talk about repurposing sentimental furniture, changing our décor as our needs change, and recognizing just how valuable the skills we've developed really are. And if you're new to furniture flipping, don't think these possibilities are only for experienced artists. Every skill can be learned, and every project gives you another opportunity to grow. You might even discover ways to share those skills with family and friends or create another source of income. → Want to Develop Your Own Creative Skills?Inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint, I demonstrate techniques like stenciling, decorative painting, creating texture, and making your own décor in the Decorative Painting & Accents section. You'll find practical instruction, creative ideas, and encouragement to help you develop your skills and discover new ways to use them, both in your furniture-flipping business and around your own home. → Come take a look inside: https://ValFrania.com/Blueprint Blog posts about projects mentioned in this episode: Jewelry Armoire (Named after Aunt Nancy) Baby Dresser (my first redesign!) Furniture Flipping Craftsmanship: When Is Good Enough, Good Enough?
2026/10/06
When Is Good Enough, Good Enough? Do you really have to fix every dent, scratch, sticky drawer, and imperfection before you sell a piece of furniture? The answer is one beginners probably don’t love hearing: it depends. 😂 In this episode, we’re talking about furniture flipping craftsmanship and learning to recognize the difference between character and damage, history and neglect, and excellence and perfectionism. I’ll share some real-life examples—including an antique dresser in my RV, advice I’ve seen given to beginning flippers, and even a 45-year-old story about an oral surgeon that taught me something about the responsibility that comes with knowing what you’re doing. Because becoming a skilled furniture flipper isn’t about reaching perfection. It’s about developing the knowledge and judgment to recognize what matters, doing your best with what you know today, and continuing to learn as you go. If you’re tired of trying to piece together one-sentence answers from Facebook comments and wondering which advice actually applies to your project, come join me inside Furniture Flipping Blueprint. I’ll help you understand not just what to do, but why, when, and sometimes just as importantly, when not to do it—so you can build your skills, trust your own judgment, and become more confident in the decisions you make. → ValFrania.com/Blueprint
I Broke The “Rules” On my Antique Dresser — Specialty Paints for the Win
2026/09/29
Does using spray paint on furniture count as cheating? Do you have to paint every inch of a dresser? And does a more difficult technique automatically make a furniture redesign better? Not in my workshop. In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the antique dresser I redesigned for our RV. Instead of using a traditional furniture paint for the base coat, I combined spray paints, acrylic stencil paint and several different metallics to create the finish I had pictured in my head. Along the way, I’m sharing some of the lessons I’ve learned about recoat times, primer color, metallic coverage, stencil care, topcoat sheen—and what happened when a spray can started spitting and accidentally gave me exactly the effect I wanted. This isn’t a step-by-step dresser tutorial. It’s about learning what different products can do so you can choose the right one for your project. Sometimes working smarter really is the better way. In This EpisodeWhy quick and easy doesn’t mean cutting cornersHow I used spray paint, stencil paint and metallics on an antique dresserSpray-paint mistakes I’ve made—and what they taught meWhy different metallic paints create very different effectsHow the right topcoat can protect your finish without dulling the glitzWhy knowing your products gives you more creative freedomWhy the hardest way isn’t necessarily the best way If you’re listening and thinking, "I wish I knew how to make those decisions for myself," you can learn. Furniture Flipping Blueprint gives you step-by-step guidance for developing your furniture-redesign and flipping skills, along with a community of furniture artists who understand the questions, mistakes, victories and learning that happen along the way. It’s a resource and a group of friends in one place. → ValFrania.com/Blueprint
Well, THAT Wasn’t On My List Of Things To Do Today
2026/09/22
Well, THAT Wasn’t On My List Of Things To Do TodayHave you ever started your day with a perfectly good to-do list, only to have something go wrong and throw the entire schedule out the window? Sometimes technology breaks, a furniture project doesn't turn out the way you imagined, or an innocent attempt to save time turns into ten quarts of tomato sauce and a midnight canning session. Ask me how I know. 😂 In this episode, I'm sharing how I handle those unexpected interruptions, including the ones I create myself. We'll talk about why furniture flippers need to stop rushing through projects, why I disagree with pricing furniture strictly according to materials and hours worked, and how slowing down can actually help us become better furniture artists. If you've been frustrated by mistakes, discouraged by slow sales, or tempted to give up because things aren't happening as quickly as you'd hoped, this one's for you. Learning takes time, and sometimes the project that looks like a complete disaster is the one that teaches us the most. Let's talk about finding the good in the mess, giving ourselves a little grace, and remembering to enjoy the journey. → Ready to make your furniture flipping journey easier? You don't have to figure everything out on your own. The Furniture Flipping Blueprint gives you step-by-step guidance, practical business training, and a community of fellow flippers to help you move forward with confidence. Lime Paint — Tricky, Expensive & Absolutely Beautiful
2026/09/15
Lime Paint for Furniture — Tricky, Expensive & Absolutely BeautifulLime paint can create depth, movement and an aged, almost stone-like finish that ordinary furniture paint simply can’t duplicate. It can also be expensive, tricky to apply and nearly impossible to spot-repair—which makes it a questionable choice for beginners or flippers who need to complete and sell furniture quickly. In this episode, Val shares what she learned while using Pure & Original Fresco lime paint on a serving cart and an oak entertainment center. Both pieces still live in her home nearly nine years later. She also explains the differences between lime paint, limewash and lime plaster; when this specialty finish might make sense for a high-end furniture artist; and why our own homes deserve to display some of the art we create. → Explore Val’s furniture-flipping resources, guidance and community at ValFrania.com. → See the complete Soft Taupe server transformation and step-by-step process on Love My DIY Home.
What Exactly is Mineral Paint?
2026/09/08
What Exactly Is Mineral Paint? If a jar says mineral paint, you would think that tells you what kind of paint is inside. But as I discovered, the word mineral can mean very different things depending on the product—and understanding those differences can help you make better decisions for your furniture projects. In this episode of The Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, we’re looking beyond the front of the paint jar. I’ll share my experience trying Fusion Mineral Paint for the first time, why one little $20 jar taught me more than I expected, and how it eventually became part of a much bigger lesson about paint, marketing, learning from experience, and even selling furniture. We’ll also talk about why prep still matters, why a built-in topcoat doesn’t necessarily answer every finishing question, and why you shouldn’t assume a piece will sell quickly just because you painted it a popular neutral color. Sometimes the problem isn’t the furniture at all—it simply hasn’t gotten in front of the right buyer yet. Along the way, I’ll tell you what my greenhouse jungle taught me about learning furniture flipping one piece of information at a time. Because whether we’re talking about fertilizer or furniture paint, a little information can be useful—but incomplete. The goal isn’t to memorize every ingredient in every can of paint. It’s to learn enough to look beyond the marketing, understand what a product actually does, and choose what makes sense for your project. Because confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything. It comes from learning, trying, paying attention, and realizing that the next time you encounter a problem, you probably know more than you think you do. A Furniture Flipper’s Guide to Antiques: Why Is That Doll Looking at Me?
2026/09/01
What makes an antique valuable? Age? Condition? Rarity? The maker? Its history? Or simply finding the right person who looks at it and says, “THAT one”? In this episode, we’re looking at antiques from a furniture flipper’s perspective—not an antique collector’s. I’ll share some of my own antique furniture stories, including the $100 side-by-side cabinet I sold untouched for $900, damaged antiques we chose to redesign, family pieces whose sentimental value far outweighs their market value, and what I’ve learned about recognizing when an old piece deserves a second look. We’ll also hear insights from my very first Furniture Flipping Blueprint member, Roxane, who spent years working with antiques and auctions. She shares what she’s seen happening to the antique furniture market, what buyers still want, what surprisingly doesn’t sell anymore, and why some unwanted old furniture may present a wonderful opportunity for furniture flippers. And yes, we eventually address the important question nobody knew they needed answered: Do antique dolls actually sell? In This EpisodeWhy old does not automatically mean valuableThe difference between market, historical, sentimental and personal valueWhy “Worth to whom?” may be the most important question you can askHow changing generations affect demand for antique furnitureWhen an antique deserves more research before you touch itWhy damaged or unwanted antiques can sometimes be excellent redesign candidatesWhy slow-selling and overpriced are not necessarily the same thingHow the $100 antique side-by-side became a $900 sale—with nothing more than dusting Want step-by-step help building your furniture-flipping skills and business? → ValFrania.com/Blueprint For more furniture-flipping resources, podcast episodes, videos and ways to connect with me: → ValFrania.com “You can pass down an object. Alkyd & Urethane Paint — Pretty Is Nice, but Will It Last?
2026/08/25
Pretty furniture is easy to photograph, but the real test is what happens after it leaves your workshop. If you’re selling your furniture, you want more than a beautiful finish on pickup day—you want confidence that the finish you created is made to last. In this episode of the Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide, we’re digging into alkyd and urethane paints, including Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and Benjamin Moore ADVANCE. We’ll talk about what makes these paints different, why recoat time matters to a furniture-flipping business, primers and topcoats, spraying, color matching, and why knowing your products matters more than simply using whatever someone online tells you is “the best.” I’ll also share why we’re moving toward Sherwin-Williams Emerald in our own furniture-flipping business, the surprising history I discovered I already had with it, and a few practical tips that could save you both time and money. Acrylic Paint — What Works, What Changes & What Lasts
2026/08/18
We’re continuing the Furniture Artist’s Resource Guide with another paint family: acrylic paint. But as you’ll discover in this episode, seeing the word acrylic on a container doesn’t tell you nearly enough about what’s inside—or whether that particular product belongs on your furniture. We’ll talk about everything from those little bottles of craft acrylic you might use for stenciling to furniture-grade acrylic coatings, including my longtime experience with CrystaLac and their Flip’N Awesome acrylic/polyurethane blend. We’ll also dig into prep, tannin blockers, dry time versus recoat time versus full cure, and why knowing your products matters so much when you’re redesigning furniture. But this episode goes beyond paint. I recently woke up discouraged about my own business, even though I know I’m in the middle of rebuilding and expanding my reach. It reminded me of something my brother told me years ago: “The ones that keep showing up are the ones who succeed in business.” Sometimes the next step isn’t having all the answers. Sometimes it’s learning, adjusting, finding your people—and showing up again tomorrow. There are different kinds of support for different seasons. If you want to connect with other people who love furniture flipping, ask questions, share what you’re learning and build relationships that actually mean something, come find my new Flipping Furniture For Profit Facebook group. If you’re ready for deeper help—the Blueprint, step-by-step training, business guidance, community and access to me when you need help—that’s what Furniture Flipping Blueprint is for. And wherever you are in your furniture journey, keep learning your products. Don’t choose a paint just because someone told you it’s “the best.” Understand what it was designed to do and choose the right product for the piece in front of you. Chalk-Type Paint — Loved by Some, Hated by Others, but Still On My Shelf
2026/08/11
Chalk-type paint was once the paint everyone seemed to be using on furniture. Annie Sloan changed the furniture painting world when she introduced Chalk Paint®, making it possible for everyday people to pick up a brush and transform furniture without feeling like they needed to become professional painters first. Today? Well...chalk-type paint has its share of critics. In this episode, we're looking at both sides of the story—why this paint became so popular, why some furniture painters have moved away from it, and why you'll still find it sitting on my shelf. I'm also sharing a few lessons I've learned the hard way, including the knotty pine dresser that taught me why I'll never tell you to skip prep, my complicated relationship with wax, and why knowing your products eventually gets you to what I call "no-brainer land." Because the goal isn't to own every product someone on the internet tells you that you need. It's learning what works for you, your projects, and the furniture flipping business you want to build. In This Episode→ Why Annie Sloan created Chalk Paint® and how it helped change furniture painting → Why other brands use terms such as "chalk-type" or "chalk-style" paint → Why I don't follow the "no prep needed" philosophy → The old pine dresser that taught me an important lesson about bleed-through → Why chalk-type paint can be especially forgiving for beginners → Why wax and I eventually parted ways → What I mean by reaching "no-brainer land" with your products → Why a popular or expensive product isn't automatically the right product for you → How understanding your products can save you time, money, and frustration as you build your business One of the hardest parts about learning to flip furniture is that you don't know what you don't know. Sometimes it's the little thing you never even thought to ask about that trips you up later. That's why I created the Furniture Flipping Blueprint—an online manual designed to help you connect the dots and understand the whole furniture flipping process instead of trying to piece everything together from random advice online. → FurnitureFlippingBlueprint.com/join Want to know more about the heart behind the Blueprint and what we're building together? Start with Episode 46. → ValFrania.com/BELONG And you never know...there just might be a fun little surprise waiting for you when you get there. 😉 That's what I hope we're doing together throughout this Resource Guide series. We're not just collecting information about paint and products. We're gaining the understanding that comes from trying things, asking questions, making a few mistakes, and learning what works. And if you're anything like me, you may also gain a cabinet containing one or two expensive products you bought because somebody absolutely raved about them...and every time you open the door and see them sitting there unused, you get irritated with yourself all over again. Not that I hold a grudge or anything. 😏
Held in His Hand
2026/08/04
Held in His Hand | Finding God's Faithfulness Through Life's Unexpected DetoursSome episodes teach a skill. Others simply tell a story. This week is one of those stories. What began as a relaxing weekend at the campground quickly turned into an unexpected series of events involving a failing vehicle, worried family members, faithful friends, and a drive home that we'll never forget. Looking back, I can see so many moments that could have gone differently. God didn't instantly remove the problem, but He faithfully carried us through it, one step at a time. If you've ever found yourself wondering where God was during a difficult season, I hope this episode reminds you that His presence isn't measured by how easy life feels. Sometimes we recognize His hand most clearly when we look back over the road we've already traveled. Thank you for spending this time with me. → You may also enjoy Episode 46, Opening the Doors Wider, where I share more of the heart behind why this podcast has become about more than furniture flipping. It's about encouraging one another through both the workshop and everyday life. "Sometimes God doesn't remove the difficult road. He simply reminds us that we're never walking it alone." When life doesn't go according to plan, it's easy to wonder where God is. Sometimes His greatest gift isn't removing the obstacle. Sometimes it's reminding us that, every step of the way, we've been held in His hand.
Experience: How We Discover What We Love
2026/07/28
Have you ever noticed how people are quick to recommend their favorite paint, brush, or topcoat—but rarely explain why they love it? In this episode, we're slowing things down and taking the time to understand furniture finishes instead of simply following opinions. As we begin exploring the different paint families, we're starting with one of the oldest and most fascinating options available: true milk paint. We'll look at what makes milk paint unique, why it behaves differently than modern paints, and how experience—not internet opinions—is what ultimately helps you discover the products you'll enjoy using most. Whether you've never opened a bag of milk paint or you've been painting furniture for years, my hope is that this episode helps you begin looking at your supplies with a little more curiosity and a lot more confidence. Resources Mentioned→ Learn more about becoming part of the Furniture Flipping Blueprint community: ValFrania.com/BELONG → See the jewelry armoire makeover featured in today's episode: https://lovemydiyhome.com/jewelry-armoire-update-ofmp-modern-masters Experience has a way of teaching us what no opinion ever can. I hope this episode encourages you to enjoy the journey of learning rather than feeling pressured to have all the answers. Every project teaches us something new, and every lesson brings us one step closer to becoming the furniture artist we're meant to be.
Come Into the Workshop and We'll Open Up My Paint Cabinet
2026/07/21
Come Into the Workshop and We'll Open Up My Paint CabinetHave you ever stood in front of a wall of paint products wondering where to begin? Maybe you've asked, "What's the best paint?" or searched online only to come away more confused than when you started. In this episode, I'm opening the doors to something I've wanted to create for a long time—the Furniture Flipper's Resource Guide. Instead of simply telling you what to buy, we'll begin exploring the different families of furniture paint so you'll understand why one product is the right choice for one project while another is better suited for something completely different. As your experience grows, you'll discover that confidence doesn't come from memorizing recommendations. It comes from understanding your products and learning how they work together. That's exactly what this new series is designed to help you do. In this episode we'll talk about:→ Why "What's the best paint?" is often the wrong question → How experienced furniture artists think differently about paint → Why understanding paint families simplifies product choices → The surprising history behind milk paint → Why two products with similar names can actually be completely different Ready to find your people? If you're looking for more than just another course and want to become part of a community of furniture artists who love learning, asking questions and encouraging one another, I'd love to invite you to join us. There Is a Better Way | Better Together
2026/07/14
There Is a Better Way | Better Together Have you ever asked, "What's the best paint?" only to receive twenty different answers? You're not alone. After mentoring furniture flippers for many years, I've become convinced that the biggest obstacle beginners face isn't a lack of talent. It's trying to learn in an environment filled with conflicting opinions, random advice, and the feeling that you're expected to figure everything out by yourself. In this episode, I'm planting a flag. I believe there is a better way. Instead of simply collecting more opinions, what if we learned how to think like furniture artists? What if we built a culture where experienced furniture flippers generously shared not only what works, but why it works? What if belonging became just as important as information? This conversation isn't really about paint. It's about community, learning and becoming better together. If today's conversation has you thinking, "That's exactly what I've been looking for," I'd love for you to spend another 13 minutes with me by listening to Episode 46 at ValFrania.com/BELONG. That's where I'll share the story behind why I decided to open the doors wider, why I reduced the cost of joining to just $10 a month for a while, and why I believe belonging should be within reach for more furniture artists. If you've been looking for a place to learn, grow, and belong, I think you'll understand my heart a little better after you hear the story. → ValFrania.com/BELONG "There is a better way—and I believe it's better together." God never intended for us to walk through life—or build our businesses—alone. When we learn with humility, encourage one another generously, and share what we've been given, everyone grows stronger. Sometimes the greatest step forward isn't finding another answer...it's finding the right people to walk beside you.
