Meet the Pros - Wildlife Photography Duo Steve & Ann Toon
2026/10/17
Host Toby Jermyn is joined by Steve & Ann Toon, former senior magazine journalists who now spend much of the year in Africa creating images, leading photo workshops and safaris, and occasionally returning to conservation-focused storytelling.
They discuss their different creative approaches, working as a true team under a joint byline, and how embracing conditions, patience, and enjoyment on safari can lead to stronger photographs.
Across five featured images, they share stories from rare nocturnal encounters, challenging weather in the Kalahari, and an intimate night hide in Kenya, before choosing an admired photograph by Bence Máté that showcases small-scale natural history with striking artistry.

Meet the Pro: Wildlife Photographer, Nelis Wolmarans
2026/09/19
Host Toby Jermyn welcomes award-winning South African wildlife photographer and private guide Nelis Wolmarans, known for extensive experience with Africa’s great apes, including 131 gorilla treks.
Nelis shares the story behind his grand-prize-winning Rwanda mountain gorilla mother-and-infant photo that was displayed at the Smithsonian, plus an encounter where a silverback charged, knocked him over, and sat on his legs.
They discuss differences between Rwanda/DRC and Uganda gorilla habitats and permit prices, why two treks help guests settle into photographing gorillas, and practical guidance on settings and lens choices.
Nelis also presents images from a Mara wildebeest river crossing, an elephant bull among winter thorn trees in Lower Zambezi, and a young chimpanzee in Kibale, with tips for forest light challenges and chimp habituation treks. He highlights an admired leopard image by Mark Nicholson and discloses his remote “humble dwelling” location.

2026/09/05
Host Toby Jermyn welcomes wildlife and nature photographer Juan Pons, a Puerto Rico-born, Florida-based workshop leader with over 30 years of experience.
In this episode, Juan selects five wall images for his humble dwelling: an African wild dog spy-hopping in Botswana’s Okavango Delta while hunting red lechwe; king penguins in South Georgia set against misty mountains, featuring a flying skua and a discussion on low-angle shooting restrictions; a wide composite sequence of a Yellowstone red fox mousing, stitched together in Photoshop; and a close-up encounter with a ghost-like snow leopard in the remote Himalayas stepping into view before a frozen waterfall.
Juan also recounts discovering photography at boarding school, teaching early digital techniques, building his workshop business, and co-hosting The Digital Photo Experience podcast for nine years. Finally, he shares his admiration for Frans Lanting’s sunset elephants in Chobe and reveals his dream bases in Botswana and Costa Rica.

Meet The Pro: Wildlife Photographer Andy Rouse
2026/08/22
Host Toby Jermyn welcomes British wildlife photographer, tour leader, and conservationist Andy Rouse to the Pangolin Podcast, where guests choose four of their own images and one by another photographer for their remote “humble dwelling.”
Rouse recounts winning a humorous category at BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year as a student with an image of a fox chewing a garden gnome, then shares stories and technique behind his chosen photographs: subadult tigers fighting in Ranthambore, a wide-angle spectacled bear portrait from Ecuador’s cloud forest, an atmospheric roe deer image made through stalking and underexposure for mood, and a creative night pan of Kenya’s black leopard “Geezer” shot at ISO 51,200.
He discusses fieldcraft, ethical distance, guiding clients, publishing standards, creativity through failure, and mental health, then chooses rural Wiltshire as his forever location and admires Sergey Gorshkov’s backlit elephant photograph.

Meet The Pro: Wildlife Photographer Chris Fallows
2026/07/08
In this episode, world-renowned fine art wildlife photographer and conservationist Chris Fallows joins us from Cape Town to talk about the images (and moments) that shaped his career—from the legendary Air Jaws great white sharks of Seal Island to a moody humpback whale fluke years in the making, and a more painterly elephant scene from Mana Pools.
We also chat about how behaviour at Seal Island was discovered, what’s changed in False Bay, and why Chris is now using his print sales to help buy and protect land for wildlife corridors. Plus, Chris shares a guest image he loves by Nick Brandt and reveals where he’d place his “humble dwelling” for a lifetime of photography.

Meet The Pros - 4 Wildlife YouTubers visit The Pangolin Voyager
2026/07/01
Welcome to Episode 25 of the Pangolin Podcast. Usually, we sit down with one expert, but for this edition week we have a massive crossover event. Pangolin Photo Host Janine Krayer is joined by four of South Africa’s most talented wildlife photography creators: Villiers Steyn, Mark Dumbleton, Lance van de Vyver, and Richard van Haght.
The Pros chat onboard the Pangolin Voyager Houseboat, about why a boat safari on the Chobe River offers a very different (and often better) photography and filming experience than a vehicle.
They discuss standout Chobe subjects—especially birds like skimmers, kingfishers, jacanas, night herons, and pratincoles—alongside elephants, hippos, and iconic silhouettes, plus how seasonality shifts opportunities from lush green to harsh dry conditions.
The conversation includes practical tips on lens choices, the benefits of houseboat comfort and social space, and recommended timing to visit The Chobe.

Meet the Pro: Wildlife Photographer Lance van de Vyver
2026/06/24
Host Toby Jermyn welcomes wildlife photographer and photographic guide Lance van de Vyver, a New Zealand-born zoology graduate who moved to South Africa in 2012 and now runs specialist photographic safaris and co-hosts the Safari Shots podcast.
Lance discusses trips to Tanzania and Botswana’s Makgadikgadi and possible travel to India. He shares a career-launching black-and-white image of a pangolin being handled by a lioness, explaining the brief sighting and that the pangolin later died from heat and prolonged stress, prompting discussion about stricter guidelines and the Pangolin Guardians program.
He also describes a portrait of a captive-born pangolin pup later released, a flash-at-sunset leopard technique and ethics, a black-and-white giant anteater (“broomstick”) in Brazil, and a stitched telephoto lion portrait. His admired image is Thomas Vijayan’s camera-trap photograph of an Amur leopard. Lance struggles to choose a single ‘humble dwelling’ location, considering several safari regions.

Wim also shares the technical challenges of camera trapping, including balancing distant security light with flashes, working at 15-second exposures, and enduring sand, lost gear, and countless failures before seeing the winning frame. He also discusses predicting behaviour, his shift from stock photography to hosting and fine-art print sales, and a shot made with a submerged wide-angle camera triggered remotely.
Listen out for a very special giveaway from Pangolin Photo Safaris and Wim van den Heever.
