What are the kitchen trends for 2027? The NKBA 2027 Kitchen Trends Report surveyed 830 kitchen professionals, and the biggest change is size: only 52% now expect kitchen footprints to grow, down from 76% last year. Kitchens are getting smarter instead of bigger. Chris and Jessica from USA Cabinet Store go through every number: 81% say intentional zoning is here to stay, 47% call the back kitchen up-and-coming, 85% say cabinetry is being designed to hide appliances, 64% say open shelving is declining, neutrals lead color at 96%, white oak is the top wood at 49%, and quartzite (78%) now edges quartz (74%). Plus lighting inside the cabinets, leak detection and backup power, a measured take on AI appliances, and where to spend first. The updated figures were checked by Emin Halac, CEO of USA Cabinet Store and author of the guide. You will hear the average cost of a kitchen remodel by kitchen size and finish level, why Northern Virginia runs about twice the national average, what the 25 percent cabinet tariff and the scheduled January 1, 2027 increase mean for anyone planning a remodel this fall, and the four upgrades homeowners most regret skipping. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:39 The 2026 national average 1:12 Northern Virginia: about twice the national average 1:49 Why 2026 costs more: the labor shortage 2:38 Cabinet tariffs and the January 2027 deadline 3:24 What October planners should do 4:05 Return on investment 5:02 Small kitchen costs 6:42 Medium kitchen and 10x10 costs 7:34 Islands and layout changes 8:21 Large kitchen costs 9:25 Where the budget goes: cabinets and lead times 10:12 Countertops and appliances 10:59 Labor, contractor markup and the rest 11:58 What a detailed estimate should include 13:19 What homeowners say: the expectation gap 13:58 The biggest money-saver: keep your layout 14:33 Four upgrades homeowners regret skipping 15:29 Realistic timelines 16:11 Costs by region 17:13 How much of your home's value to spend 18:01 Lightning round: your top cost questions 20:11 Three takeaways 20:50 Free cost calculator and consultation National average: $27,000-$35,000, with most projects between $15,000 and $75,000. Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William) averages about $75,000. - Medium kitchens (70-150 sq ft, including a 10x10): $18K-$35K basic, $35K-$70K mid-range, $70K-$120K+ high-end nationally; $30K-$50K, $45K-$95K and $100K-$175K+ in Northern Virginia. - Labor: Northern Virginia master electricians run $90-$130+ per hour and master plumbers $100-$150. - Tariffs: 25% on imported kitchen cabinets now, with an increase to 50% scheduled for January 1, 2027. - Resale (2025 Cost vs. Value Report, Zonda): minor remodels recoup about 101%-113%, mid-range majors about 49%-50%, upscale about 32%-36% (national and Washington, DC figures). - Cabinets are 30-40% of the budget: stock $100-$300 per linear foot (2-5 weeks), semi-custom $200-$650 (5-9 weeks), custom $500-$1,500+ (7-11 weeks). - Keeping your layout avoids plumbing relocation ($3K-$8K), gas line moves ($1.5K-$4K) and panel upgrades ($2K-$5K). - Regrets: drop-in sinks, too few outlets, unvented range hoods and particleboard cabinet boxes. - Off-season (November-February) can bring better contractor availability and sometimes 5-10% discounts.
Turnkey Kitchen Remodeling in Fairfax County
2026/10/09
Thinking about a turnkey kitchen remodel in Fairfax County? Here is what it really costs, how long it takes, and what pays back at resale. Chris and Jessica break down turnkey kitchen remodeling in Fairfax County, Virginia: one company and one project manager from design to final walkthrough. They cover the five-phase process, Fairfax County permits, cabinet lead times, real Northern Virginia cost ranges, ROI from the Cost vs. Value Report, financing and the design trends showing up in McLean, Reston and Great Falls kitchens. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:05 What turnkey kitchen remodeling means 1:05 Why traditional remodels go off the rails 2:26 The turnkey process, phases 1 and 2 3:07 Permits and cabinet lead times 3:45 Construction and final walkthrough 4:38 What a kitchen remodel costs in Fairfax 5:28 Where the budget goes 6:25 Return on investment 7:07 Should you remodel before selling? 7:37 Financing options 8:16 Kitchen design trends 9:12 Stock vs semi-custom vs custom cabinets 9:59 What homeowners say 10:35 Key takeaways 11:20 Getting started SHOW NOTES: The average cost of a kitchen remodel in Fairfax and the rest of Northern Virginia is about $75,000, roughly twice the national average of $27,000 to $35,000. Minor cosmetic updates run $25,000 to $45,000, mid-range remodels $45,000 to $95,000, full-gut high-end work $95,000 to $150,000, and luxury projects $150,000 to $300,000 or more. Timeline: design and permitting take about two to four weeks. Cabinet lead time runs two to five weeks for stock lines and five to nine weeks for semi-custom, counted from final design sign-off, with Fairfax County permit review running while the cabinets are built. On site, a cosmetic update takes two to four weeks, a mid-range remodel six to ten weeks, and a major renovation twelve to twenty weeks or more.\ Budget split: cabinets 30 to 40 percent, labor and project management 20 to 35 percent on cosmetic scopes and 35 to 50 percent on full remodels, appliances 10 to 20 percent, countertops 10 to 15 percent. Keeping your layout can save $8,000 to $15,000. Hold a 10 to 20 percent contingency. ROI (2025 Cost vs. Value Report): minor remodels recoup about 101 to 113 percent (101 percent in the Washington, DC market, 113 percent nationally), major mid-range about 49 to 51 percent, upscale about 32 to 36 percent. Design trends: green and blue cabinetry, white oak, warm greige, forest green islands, quartz with warm veining, returning granite, soapstone, reeded details, and pantries hidden behind cabinet doors. How to Choose a Kitchen Remodel Contractor in Fairfax, VA (2026 Costs, ROI & Red Flags)
2026/10/06
Hiring a kitchen remodel contractor in Fairfax, VA? Here are the 2026 numbers, the 8 qualities that matter, and the red flags to avoid. Chris and Jessica of The Remodel Report walk through the October 2026 update of our Fairfax contractor guide: current Northern Virginia cost tiers, resale returns from the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report for both the national and Washington, D.C. markets, how to verify a Virginia Class A license, and what a fair contract looks like. The updated figures were checked by Emin Halac, author of the guide. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 1:09 The Fairfax kitchen market in 2026 2:08 Resale value: national vs. Washington, D.C. numbers 3:47 2026 cost tiers for Northern Virginia 4:45 Why Fairfax homeowners remodel instead of moving 5:36 Qualities 1 and 2: licensing and one-stop service 6:58 Quality 3: cabinet construction 7:46 Qualities 4 and 5: pricing and track record 8:50 Qualities 6 to 8: timelines, design and warranty 10:06 Red flags to avoid 11:08 2026 design trends: color 12:20 Layouts, smart tech and surfaces 13:36 What drives the final price 14:36 The remodeling process, step by step 16:04 How the USA Cabinet Store Fairfax team measures up 17:48 10 questions to ask before you sign 18:48 Key takeaways SHOW NOTES: The median kitchen remodel cost $60,000 in 2024, up from $55,000 (Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, 2025). Resale returns depend on scope: per the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, a minor kitchen remodel recoups about 113% nationally and about 101% in the Washington, D.C. market, a major midrange remodel about 51% nationally and 49% in D.C., and an upscale remodel about 36% nationally and 32% in D.C. Current USA Cabinet Store ranges for Northern Virginia: minor remodel $25,000 to $45,000, mid-range $45,000 to $95,000, major $95,000 to $150,000, luxury $150,000 to $300,000+. What to check before you sign: a Virginia Class A Contractor license (verify on DPOR), proof of insurance and bonding, a fixed-price contract with line-item pricing, a deposit of 10% or less, and recent Fairfax County references. Red flags include requests for 50% or more up front, vague lump-sum estimates, and any suggestion that you pull permits yourself. Fairfax County permits for plumbing, electrical, structural, and ventilation work are handled through the PLUS system. RTA Kitchen Cabinets Explained: Types, Sizes, Costs and How to Plan (2026)
2026/10/03
What are RTA kitchen cabinets, and are they worth it? We break down materials, sizes, real 10x10 costs and planning in 8 minutes. Chris and Jessica walk through everything you need before you buy ready to assemble kitchen cabinets: how to tell plywood RTA cabinets from cheap particleboard, the base, wall and tall cabinet types, standard kitchen cabinet sizes, what a 10x10 kitchen really costs, and how to measure and plan your layout. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:05 What RTA cabinets are 0:57 Plywood, MDF and particleboard 1:46 Our plywood Shaker line 2:16 Base, wall and tall cabinet types 3:12 Standard cabinet sizes 3:52 What an RTA kitchen costs 4:35 10x10 and planning your kitchen 5:18 Buying online vs locally 6:01 Assembly tips 6:43 Mixing RTA and assembled cabinets 7:17 Key takeaways SHOW NOTES: RTA means ready to assemble. The cabinets ship flat-packed and you build each box before installing it. RTA describes how a cabinet ships, not its quality, so start with the box material: plywood for the box and shelves, solid wood for frames, MDF only for painted door panels, and avoid particleboard near water. "Engineered wood" without the word plywood usually means particleboard. Every kitchen uses three families of cabinets: base (standard, drawer, sink and corner), wall, and tall or pantry, plus fillers, end panels, toe kick and crown molding. Standard kitchen cabinet sizes: base cabinets 34.5 inches tall and 24 inches deep, wall cabinets 12 inches deep in 30, 36 or 42 inch heights, widths in 3-inch steps. Typical 10x10 costs, cabinets only: economy particleboard RTA about $1,200 to $2,500, plywood RTA about $2,800 to $5,000, stock pre-assembled about $3,500 to $6,500. For the same line, RTA runs roughly $500 less before labor. Compare plywood with plywood and always ask for a delivered price. Planning: sketch the room, measure each wall at three heights, place appliances first, fill from the corners with standard widths and leave room for fillers. Assembly: count every carton on arrival, dry fit then glue, check for square, hang wall cabinets first on a ledger board, and fasten into studs. Alexandria Kitchen Cabinets: Permits, Old Town, Lead Times
2026/10/01
Do you need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets in Alexandria, VA? No. But your mailing address might not even be in the city. Chris and Jessica from the Alexandria showroom walk through what actually decides an Alexandria kitchen: which office your house answers to, where the permit exemption stops, why Old Town is not the problem people expect, and what "in stock" really means when you ask a showroom. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:35 Can you get cabinets this week 1:16 City of Alexandria or Fairfax County 2:20 Do you need a permit to replace cabinets 3:00 Where the exemption stops 4:04 Old Town and the BAR myth 5:19 Condo rules 6:02 Delivery to houses and condos 6:23 What "in stock" really means 7:37 Allure, Illume and the Tuscany trap 8:10 Modified cabinets and the warranty 8:46 What to bring, and the one rule SHOW NOTES: City or county: Alexandria is an independent city with its own Permit Center. Zip codes 22314 and 22301 are almost always in the city, but an Alexandria mailing address in 22312 can sit in Fairfax County. Our own showroom on General Washington Drive is one of them. One call to the city Permit Center tells you which office you deal with. Permits: the Virginia Construction Code, 13VAC5-63-80, section 108.2, lists "installation or replacement of cabinetry or trim" as work exempt from a permit. Move the sink, add circuits, take out a wall or move a gas line and you need the matching permit. Exempt work still has to meet the code, and in a mapped flood zone the building official can require a permit anyway. Old Town: only two local districts are regulated by the Board of Architectural Review, Old and Historic Alexandria and Parker-Gray, plus designated 100 year old buildings. The city states that interior work does not require BAR approval. Exterior changes do, and a Permit to Demolish applies to more than 25 square feet of material regardless of whether it is visible from the street. Stock and series: Fabuwood's finish tier belongs to the door and the finish together, not the color. Oyster is Signature on Fusion but made to order on Nexus. Allure is plywood with dovetail drawers; Illume is furniture board with a metal Blum drawer; Tuscany comes in both Illume and Ovela. Ask which series your quote is for. Warranty: eligible Fabuwood cabinets carry a limited lifetime warranty for the first residential purchaser. It does not transfer, excludes rental use, and excludes cabinets modified from their original form. How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take? The Two Clocks Every Homeowner Should Ask About
2026/09/30
How long does a kitchen remodel take? For most kitchens, 8 to 16 weeks from the first design meeting to the finished room, with the crew on site for 2 to 6 weeks (cosmetic), 6 to 10 weeks (mid-range) or 12 to 20+ weeks (high-end). The ranges are general across 13 showrooms in seven states; geography moves the exact number. In this episode of The Remodel Report, Chris and Jessica explain the two clocks every quote should state, walk the construction sequence week by week, break down cabinet lead times by tier, and cover what a permit adds in Fairfax County, Maryland, Houston and beyond. In Stock Cabinets in a DC Rowhouse: Fit, Delivery, Permits
2026/09/25
Your DC rowhouse wall is not a round number. Stock cabinets only come in 3 inch steps. Here is what actually happens in between. Chris and Jessica walk through the three things that decide a Washington DC cabinet job: whether stock sizes fit a house built in 1912, how a delivery truck legally stops on a permit-parking block, and whether you need a permit at all. Most of this is not in any brochure. TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 0:19 Can stock cabinets fit a 100 year old rowhouse 1:12 The ceiling arithmetic nobody does 2:36 Getting a delivery onto a DC block 3:37 The 72 hour sign rule 3:52 Front doors, stairs and condo elevators 4:32 Do you need a permit in DC 5:37 The Georgetown myth 6:01 What we do differently from custom shops 7:20 What to bring to the showroom SHOW NOTES: Stock cabinet widths run 9 to 36 inches in 3 inch steps. Your wall is whatever it is, so every stock run ends in a filler strip, sold in 3 and 6 inch widths and cut down on site. More than about 6 inches of filler in one spot and the layout should change instead. The ceiling maths: base cabinet 34.5 inches, countertop takes you to 36, standard gap to the wall cabinets is 18 inches, so their underside sits at 54 inches. A 36 inch wall cabinet finishes at 90 and leaves 6 inches for crown. A 42 inch cabinet finishes at 96, flush to an 8 foot ceiling with nothing to spare. Measure floor to ceiling at BOTH ends of the run. Delivery in the District: DDOT sets the public space permit at $50 plus meter fees, caps occupancy at two days, and requires No Parking signs posted 72 hours ahead at an unmetered curb, or 24 hours at a metered one. Permits: the DC Department of Buildings lists work that does not require a permit, and it names "papering, tiling, carpeting, floor covering, cabinets, countertops." A like for like swap is exempt. Move plumbing or electrical and an Alteration and Repair permit applies, and trade permits only go to licensed and bonded master trades. Historic districts: the DC Office of Planning ties preservation review to work affecting the EXTERIOR appearance. A kitchen inside the envelope generally is not a preservation matter. How To Plan A Bathroom Remodel: Six Steps, Timelines, Permits
2026/09/22
How do you plan a bathroom remodel? Six steps, in order: consultation, measurement and discovery, layout and 3D design, material selection, a written itemized estimate with permits assigned, then ordering and installation — and demolition does not start until permits are issued and every product is on site. Chris and Jessica from USA Cabinet Store cover the real 2026 numbers: construction takes 4-7 weeks for a hall bathroom and 7-10 for a primary suite, but door to door you should plan on 8-16 weeks. Budget tiers run $5-10K for a refresh, $16-28K mid-range (where most full remodels land), $30-50K high end, and $60K+ for luxury custom — plus the 10-20% contingency the walls will make you spend. They also get into what $10,000 realistically buys, the NKBA 30-inch clearance guideline, the Reddit "multiply your schedule by three" warning, and why the same vanity swap is exempt in Fairfax County but licensed work in Maryland. CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:35 The six steps, in order 1:20 The honest timeline: 8-16 weeks door to door 2:06 The four budget tiers 2:34 Is $10,000 enough for a bathroom remodel? 3:04 Layout: where the money is saved or spent 3:29 Clearances and the layout review checklist 4:03 What to add while the walls are open 4:32 The Reddit warning: multiply your schedule by three 5:01 The shower bench confession 5:25 Permits state by state: Fairfax, Maryland, Houston, Florida 6:20 The flood test, explained 6:49 Who should pull the permit 7:14 Where to start today 7:46 The quote comparison trap 8:05 Three things to remember 8:32 Get the full written guide The full written planning guide — the six-step checklist, the timeline, and permit rules state by state — is at https://www.usacabinetstore.com/how-to-plan-your-dream-bathroom-remodel/ Free design consultation (showroom, at home, or virtual): https://www.usacabinetstore.com/complimentary-consultation/ Find a showroom: https://www.usacabinetstore.com/showrooms/ #BathroomRemodel #BathroomRenovation #HomeRemodeling #RemodelPlanning #BathroomDesign
Steam Shower vs Sauna in Orlando: Cost, Power & Humidity
2026/09/15
In Orlando, a steam shower built into an existing bathroom typically costs $6,000 to $15,000 and uses about 35 to 42 cents of OUC electricity per session. A traditional electric sauna needs its own room, its own 240-volt circuit, and 52 to 84 cents of power every time you heat it up. The Permit Line: Kitchen Cabinets in Northern Virginia
2026/09/11
In Fairfax County, replacing your kitchen cabinets and countertops requires no building permit at all. Move a plumbing, gas or electrical fixture and it does. That line gets drawn when your layout gets drawn, in a showroom, weeks before anybody picks up a tool. It decides whether you have a two day cabinet swap or a project with an inspection in it, and it costs more than any door style you will choose afterwards. We go through what the county actually exempts, what relocating a sink drags with it, and the part people find surprising: keeping the plumbing where it is does not mean keeping the same kitchen. Drawer banks instead of cupboards, wall cabinets to the ceiling, a U shaped pull out that wraps the trap rather than moving the drain. All cabinet work. None of it permitted work. Then the four words the trade uses interchangeably. Distributor, dealer, wholesaler, supplier. They are not synonyms, and the difference decides who answers the phone when a door fails eighteen months from now. Timestamps: 0:20 The whole episode in two sentences 0:48 What Fairfax County exempts 1:36 What moving the sink drags with it 2:01 Why layout is the budget decision 3:05 What you can change without a permit 4:03 Judge the box, not the door 5:01 Distributor, dealer, wholesaler, supplier 6:45 Two caveats: jurisdiction and your HOA One warning from the episode. Everything here describes Fairfax County. Alexandria City, Arlington County, Falls Church City and Prince William run their own permit offices. Ring your own building department. Cabinet Door Styles 2027: What to Spec
2026/09/03
There is a hard floor on how narrow a Shaker rail can go, and it is set by the hinge, not by taste. Almost nobody publishes it. In this episode we go through the six cabinet door profiles worth specifying going into 2027, what the industry data actually measures, and where we think the market moves next. We keep those two things apart on purpose, because nobody has real 2027 numbers yet and plenty of articles pretend they do. TIMESTAMPS (measured from the merged file, not estimated): 0:00 - Intro 0:23 - Why door style is not a taste question 0:48 - There are only three cabinet door styles 1:46 - Inset is an installation method, not a door style 2:11 - Flat slab and the 69% number 2:55 - Where slab goes wrong on install 3:19 - Slim Shaker and the euro hinge floor 3:52 - What cabinet shops actually specify 4:36 - Wood grain overtakes paint 5:10 - What is actually replacing grey 6:03 - Fluted and glass, accent only 6:45 - Our 2027 read, clearly labelled 7:19 - Colour moves onto the cabinet 8:05 - Availability beats aesthetics, and lead times 8:59 - Takeaways 9:39 - Close SHOW NOTES: Verified figures cited in this episode, with sources and sample sizes: - 69% of professionals named flat slab a growing style (NKBA 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, 634 North American kitchen and bath professionals) - 72% specifying panel-faced refrigeration, 85% panel-faced dishwashers (NKBA 2026) - 59% call wood grain a growing finish, white oak top species at 51% (NKBA 2026) - Wood cabinetry 29% vs white 28%, the first time wood has edged ahead (Houzz 2026 US Kitchen Trends Study, 1,780 homeowners) - Rust +178%, chocolate brown +153%, mushroom +69%, olive +57% (Houzz 2026) - Sandstone searches +257%, Venetian plaster +94% (Houzz 2026) - Shop consensus on Shaker rail width: 2.25 to 2.625 inches (r/Cabinetry) Everything about 2027 in this episode is labelled as projection. The full NKBA 2027 report has not been publicly released, and there are no published 2027 percentages anywhere. As of recording, neither Benjamin Moore nor Pantone has released a 2027 colour of the year, and Sherwin-Williams published a forecast called Rewild rather than a single colour. Treat any article claiming otherwise with suspicion. Lead times quoted are supplier snapshots checked September 2026, not an industry benchmark.
