True and False Worship. Genesis 4:1-5. [Sermon].
2026/09/20
What makes worship truly acceptable to God? Is sincerity enough—or does God require us to worship Him according to His truth?
In Genesis 4:1–5, Cain and Abel both bring offerings to the Lord, yet God accepts Abel’s offering and rejects Cain’s. Why? Their story gives us one of Scripture’s earliest and most important lessons about true and false worship.
In this sermon, we examine the similarities and differences between Cain and Abel’s worship and consider why both the worshiper and the offering matter to God. We also look at Hebrews 11, 1 John 3, and Jude for further insight into Cain’s heart and Abel’s faith.
The sermon then turns to John 4, where Jesus gives the definitive description of true worship: God’s people must worship Him “in spirit and truth.” True worship requires both a sincere heart and worship according to God’s Word. This biblical principle is foundational to the Reformed understanding of worship and what is often called the regulative principle of worship.
Along the way, we consider the Golden Calf, Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal, and C. S. Lewis’s depiction of worship in The Last Battle.
What happens when we have spirit without truth? Truth without spirit? Neither? And what does it look like to worship the true God with a true heart?
Join us as we explore Genesis 4 and discover what the Bible teaches about Cain and Abel, true worship, false worship, sincerity, Scripture, and worship in spirit and truth.

Open Letter to the PCA
2026/09/18
In this video, I write something like an "open letter" to the PCA. Don't get me wrong. The PCA is the greatest denomination in the world. I love it. I am so thankful for it! I am blessed and honored to be a part of the PCA. It is excellent in so many ways! But rather than sprain my arm patting ourselves on the back, I want to point out a number of things that we can certainly do better. Praise God for the PCA!
Evangelism Roadblocks: What to do when someone rejects your attempts to share the gospel.
2026/09/17
In this video, I will work through a number of responses that we can give when people offer typical "roadblocks" to evangelism such as:
I'm not religious I'm spiritual
Don't judge!
Don't push religion down people's throats!
Believe the science, etc.
Banished From the Garden. Genesis 3:22-24. Sermon.
2026/09/13
BANISHED FROM THE GARDEN | Genesis 3:22–24
What happened when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden? And what does their banishment mean for us today?
In Genesis 3:22–24, we come to the sobering conclusion of the Garden of Eden story. Adam and Eve are driven from Paradise, and cherubim with a flaming sword are placed at the entrance to guard the way to the Tree of Life. The door to Eden appears to be shut forever.
But this passage contains not only bad news—it also points us toward glorious good news.
In this sermon, we examine Genesis 3:22–24 verse by verse and consider:
Why Adam and Eve were expelled from the GardenWhat it means that Adam had become “like one of us” in knowing good and evilWhether “us” refers to the Trinity or the heavenly angelic hostJohn Calvin’s fascinating interpretation of God’s “divine irony”What might have happened if Adam had eaten from the Tree of LifeWhether Adam was ultimately lost or savedThe difference between temporal chastisement and eternal punishmentWhy God’s discipline can actually be an instrument of graceThe significance of the cherubim and the flaming swordHow Eden’s imagery points forward to the Tabernacle and TemplePsalm 24 and the question, “Who will open the doors?”Jesus Christ as the Door and the only way back into ParadiseHow the flaming sword points us toward the cross of ChristAdam as the first man and Jesus Christ as the Second AdamThe relationship between Eden and the New Creation in Revelation 21–22Why we must seek to enter while the door is still openGenesis 3 ends with humanity living “east of Eden.” From this point forward, the biblical story will be filled with murder, violence, sin, suffering, and death. Yet the hope of redemption remains.
The door that Adam could not reopen is ultimately opened by Jesus Christ.
“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.” — John 10:9
Christ is the way back into Paradise. We are banished by our works, but welcomed by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Come by faith. Come by grace. Come while the door is open.

John Calvin's AMAZING Years in Strasbourg
2026/09/09
John Calvin’s years in Strasbourg were some of the most important—and often overlooked—years of his life. After being expelled from Geneva in 1538, Calvin spent several years in Strasbourg under the influence of the great Reformer Martin Bucer. Far from being a period of failure, these years became a season of remarkable pastoral, theological, and personal growth. In this video, we explore John Calvin in Strasbourg (1538–1541) and examine how this experience shaped the Reformer who would eventually return to Geneva with renewed confidence and a more mature vision for the church. We’ll look at:• Why Calvin was expelled from Geneva• His arrival in Strasbourg and relationship with Martin Bucer• Calvin’s ministry to French-speaking refugees• His pastoral ministry at St. Nicholas Church• Calvin’s preaching and worship practices in Strasbourg• The development of his liturgy and the French Psalter• Calvin’s marriage to Idelette de Bure• The tragic death of their son, Jacques• The dramatic expansion and revision of Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion• Calvin’s important commentary on Romans• How Strasbourg gave Calvin personal peace and renewed productivity• Why Geneva eventually pleaded for Calvin to return• How Calvin’s Strasbourg experience prepared him for his second ministry in GenevaThe Strasbourg years reveal a fascinating side of Calvin: not merely the controversial theologian of Geneva, but a pastor, husband, preacher, writer, and churchman whose experiences in Strasbourg profoundly shaped the remainder of his ministry. If you enjoy John Calvin, Reformation history, Reformed theology, church history, Presbyterianism, and the Protestant Reformation, this video will give you a deeper appreciation for one of the most formative periods in Calvin’s life.KEYWORDS: John Calvin, Calvin in Strasbourg, John Calvin Strasbourg, Calvin 1538 1541, Calvin biography, Calvin Geneva, Martin Bucer, Protestant Reformation, Reformation history, Reformed theology, Calvin Institutes, Institutes of Christian Religion, Calvin Romans commentary, Idelette de Bure, Calvin preaching, Calvin worship, Calvin liturgy, French Reformation, Strasbourg Reformation, Presbyterian history, church history, Reformed church history#JohnCalvin #Calvin #Reformation #ReformedTheology #ChurchHistory #MartinBucer #Strasbourg #ProtestantReformationJONATHAN EDWARDS STUDY BIBLE:Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Tp1bxpChristian Book: https://www.christianbook.com/apps/easyfind?Ntt=jonathan+edwards+study+bible&Ntk=keywords&action=Search&Ne=0&event=ESRCG%7CPSEN&nav_search=1&cms=1&ps_exit=RETURN%7Clegacy&ps_domain=wwwBarnes & Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-jonathan-edwards-study-bible-thomas-nelson/1148750961?ean=9781400339532Target: https://www.target.com/p/the-jonathan-edwards-study-bible-experience-abiding-joy-in-christ-nkjv-hardcover-red-letter-comfort-print-by-thomas-nelson-publishers/-/A-1007250791#lnk=sametabWal-Mart: https://www.walmart.com/ip/The-Jonathan-Edwards-Study-Bible-Experience-Abiding-Joy-in-Christ-Nkjv-Hardcover-Red-Letter-Comfort-Print-Hardcover-9781400339532/18385609435?classType=REGULAR&from=/search
Introduction to the Life and Ministry of Jonathan Edwards
2026/09/08
Jonathan Edwards is one of the most important—and fascinating—figures in American Christian history. But who was Jonathan Edwards, really?
In this lecture, Rev. Dr. Matthew Everhard explores the life and influence of Jonathan Edwards, the great Puritan theologian, pastor, revivalist, missionary, philosopher, and theologian of the eighteenth century.
Edwards lived from 1703–1758 and became one of the central figures of the First Great Awakening. He is perhaps best known for his famous sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, but his influence extends far beyond revival preaching. Edwards produced profound works on Christian spirituality, revival, philosophy, ethics, theology, missions, and the nature of true religious experience.
Edwards was much more than the preacher of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” He was a polymath whose intellectual and theological influence reached across pastoral ministry, revival, missions, philosophy, ethics, science, and systematic theology.
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones famously compared Edwards to Mount Everest among the Puritans, highlighting the extraordinary breadth and depth of his intellect and theology.
If you want to understand Jonathan Edwards, the First Great Awakening, Puritan theology, Calvinism, Christian revival, and the history of American Christianity, this lecture provides a comprehensive introduction to his life and enduring influence.

Covered by Grace. Genesis 3:20-21. Sermon.
2026/09/06
Covered by Grace | Genesis 3:20–21 | The Gospel in the Garden of Eden
What does clothing have to do with the gospel?
In Genesis 3:20–21, immediately after Adam and Eve’s fall into sin, we encounter two remarkable signs of God’s grace. Eve is named “the mother of all living,” and God Himself makes garments of skins and clothes Adam and Eve. In the midst of judgment, God displays mercy.
In this sermon, we explore the profound biblical theology of clothing, nakedness, shame, substitution, and righteousness. Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with fig leaves, but their own efforts could never adequately cover their sin and shame. Instead, God provides a covering—and that covering comes through the death of another.
This points forward to the great doctrine of imputed righteousness: sinners cannot stand before a holy God on the basis of their own righteousness. We need the righteousness of another—the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, received by grace through faith.
We will consider:
• Genesis 3:20–21 and the surprising grace of God after the Fall• Why Adam and Eve needed to be clothed• The theological significance of the garments of skin• Penalty substitution and the principle of one dying for another• The difference between inherent righteousness and imputed righteousness• Justification by grace through faith alone• The biblical theme of clothing and nakedness throughout Scripture• Zechariah 3 and Joshua’s filthy garments• The wedding garment in Matthew 22• Why Jesus condemned the religious “clothing” of the Pharisees• Why our good works cannot cover our sin• How Christ becomes our perfect covering and righteousness
The message of Genesis 3:20–21 ultimately points us beyond Adam and Eve to Jesus Christ, the spotless Lamb of God, who died for sinners so that those who trust in Him might be clothed in His righteousness.
We do not need to manufacture our own covering. We need to be covered by grace.

Five Denominations I Trust: And a Few that I Don't
2026/09/04
In this video, I will go over several Christian denominations that I trust and a few that I don't. Since I am a Reformed pastor, I will focus primarily on denominations in my own tradition, including Presbyterian, Reformed, and Baptist churches. I will also share some concerns with each one, showing their Achilles' Heel, as well as their Secret Sauce! Then I will turn my aim against a couple of denominations that I don't really trust very much. Even here, though, I will try to say a couple nice things!

David's Mighty Men: Bible Study on 2 Samuel 23:8-39
2026/09/01
David’s Mighty Men: Courage, Loyalty, and Faithfulness | 2 Samuel 23
Who were David’s Mighty Men? In 2 Samuel 23:8–39 and 1 Chronicles 11:11–47, we meet some of the most remarkable warriors in the Old Testament—including Josheb-basshebeth, Eleazar, Shammah, Abishai, and Benaiah.
These men demonstrated extraordinary courage, loyalty, resolve, and perseverance as they fought alongside King David. But their stories point to something even greater: the sovereignty and power of God who gives the victory.
In this Bible study, we examine the remarkable exploits of David’s Mighty Men and consider what their example teaches us about serving the Lord today.
Among the questions we explore:
• Who were David’s Mighty Men?• Who were the famous Three, and who were the Thirty?• What did Josheb-basshebeth accomplish with his spear?• How did Eleazar stand against the Philistines when others fled?• What did Shammah defend?• Who were the three men who risked their lives to bring David water from Bethlehem?• Why did David pour the water out instead of drinking it?• Who was Abishai?• Why was Benaiah so remarkable?• What can David’s Mighty Men teach us about courage, resolve, and perseverance?• How does this passage point us ultimately to Jesus Christ?
The Mighty Men were willing to tackle great challenges, refuse excuses, persevere through difficulty, and risk everything for something greater than themselves. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God is the One who brings the victory.
As Matthew Henry observed, however great the bravery of the instruments may be, the praise for the achievement belongs to God.
Most importantly, the Mighty Men point us beyond themselves to Christ—the perfectly courageous King who loved His people, obeyed His Father, endured suffering, and gave Himself for the sake of His Kingdom.
Be among the Lord’s Mighty Men.

Proto-Gospel: The First Prophecy of Christ. Genesis 3:14-16. [Sermon].
2026/08/23
What is the first prophecy of Jesus Christ in the Bible? In Genesis 3:14–16, immediately after the Fall, God announces both judgment and the first Gospel promise—the protoevangelium (proto-Gospel).
In this sermon, we explore the judgment of the serpent and the woman, the promise of the coming Messiah, and the dramatic prophecy that the serpent would bruise the Messiah’s heel while the Messiah would crush the serpent’s head. Genesis 3:15 points forward to Christ’s suffering, death, resurrection, and ultimate victory over Satan.
We also consider the biblical meaning of the curse on the serpent, the consequences of sin, humility versus humiliation, the difficulties introduced into marriage by the Fall, and the remarkable mercy of God even in the midst of judgment. Most importantly, we see how Jesus Christ—the true Messiah and invincible Warrior—fulfills the promise of Genesis 3.
In this sermon:• Genesis 3:14–16 explained• The Proto-Gospel / Protoevangelium• The serpent and the curse of sin• “He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel”• Satan’s attack against Christ• Christ’s death and resurrection• The promise of the Messiah born of a woman• Genesis 3:16 and marriage after the Fall• Humility, repentance, and the consequences of sin• The connection between Achilles’ heel and Christ’s victory
Genesis 3 is a chapter of judgment—but it is also a chapter of extraordinary Gospel hope. The serpent strikes the heel, but Christ crushes the head.
