Description

Welcome to Middle Ground Books: After Hours. We’re Megan, Debra, and Lance from Middle Ground Books in Emporia, Kansas. After a long day at the bookstore, this is where we sit down, grab a few drinks, and talk about whatever happens to be on our minds. Sometimes that means books, authors, and what we’re reading. Other times it takes us into movies, fandom, life, the shop, and whatever else comes up along the way. We try to keep things family friendly, depending on how the drinks are treating us. Mostly, After Hours is just a chance for us to unwind, laugh, share what we’ve been thinking about, and spend a little more time with the community around Middle Ground Books. New chapters every Thursday . Have something you think we should talk about? Stop by the shop, say hi, and let us know what’s on your mind. You never know what might make its way into an episode. And as always, we’ll meet you in the middle. 🛒 Support Middle Ground Books: Support Middle Ground Books wherever you are. 🌎 Physical books and ebooks are available worldwide through the shop’s Bookshop page, and audiobooks are available through the store as well. 📖 Print and Ebooks https://bookshop.org/shop/middlegroundbooks When ordering through Bookshop.org, make sure Middle Ground Books is selected as your bookstore. An ACOTAR Series Recap Megan, Debra, and Lance attempt the questionable task of explaining ACOTAR in one episode, with Megan doing most of the actual explaining while the other two try to keep up. With Middle Ground Books preparing for its midnight release party on Monday, October 26, they work through the world, the lore, and why Sarah J. Maas’s fantasy series has readers so invested. Join them for the crash course, whether you already know your High Fae from your humans or you’re just as lost as Lance and Debra. ⚠️ Spoiler Warning This chapter includes spoilers for the A Court of Thorns and Roses series as Megan attempts to explain several books’ worth of story in one sitting. Chapter Forty-Eight: Snickers Bar or Fine Dining?
2026/10/01
Some books are a Snickers bar. Others deserve the full fine-dining treatment. Chapter Forty-Seven: Let Those Leaves Fall
2026/09/24
📖 Question of the Chapter: When fall hits, what kind of book do you reach for first: something spooky, something cozy, a classic, or something completely different? The possibility, the rumor of fall. Megan, Debra, and Lance settle into fall reading season and the shift in what sounds good once the weather starts to turn. Some readers lean spooky, some want something cozy, and some finally reach for the classic or new release they have been meaning to start. Fall is also a good time to clear the reading list. Life is too short to keep forcing your way through a book you are not enjoying when there are so many others waiting. The gang keeps that idea going by looking at what feels worth picking up next when the season changes. Chapter Forty-Six: The Book Was Better, Right?
2026/09/17
Take a seat as Middle Ground Books After Hours tests the old line: “the book was better.” Megan, Debra, and Lance look at what books can hold that screen versions often lose, from internal character work to narrator voice, then turn toward the rare cases where another format may understand the story better. Percy Jackson missed the point. The Princess Bride may have improved the source. Winnie-the-Pooh might not belong on screen at all. Chapter Forty-Six: The Book Was Better, Right? Descend into madness with Middle Ground Books: After Hours as Chapter Forty-Five slips between mad science, cosmic horror, octopus intelligence, and fiction that eats away at memory. Chapter Forty-One: Podcast Like No One’s Listening
2026/08/13
Middle Ground Books passed 1,000 subscribers, and the hosts are still figuring out what it means to talk like people are actually listening. Megan, Debra, and Lance settle into a loose host blurbs episode about bookstore life, community, folklore, dragons, Egyptian mythology, and the strange things people believe when stories travel across cultures. It is part milestone episode, part after-hours conversation, and part reminder that a bookstore can make room for everything from Walmart dancing to vending machine monsters. Chapter Forty: Class or Pass
2026/08/06
Wine night comes to Middle Ground Books, and nobody is spitting. Megan, Debra, and Lance use Tom Gilby’s Thirsty as their guide through a tasting episode where wine becomes less about knowing the right words and more about figuring out what anyone actually tastes in the glass. The Vine Witch brings the bookish side of the night, with a cursed vineyard, old magic, and the kind of fantasy premise that pairs better with wine than anyone expected. Chapter Thirty-Nine: Don’t Panic, We’re Reading a Sequel

Douglas Adams built one of science fiction’s strangest comic universes, but what happens when someone else tries to hitch a ride? Megan, Debra, and Lance return to "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy," then follow the series into "And Another Thing" by Eoin Colfer to see what happens when a beloved universe keeps going without the original voice behind it. >>>>Viewer discretion advised After promising to read a Harlequin romance if the channel reached 500 subscribers, Lance sits down with Hot Sheets by Jeannie London for a special episode outside the usual Middle Ground Books lane.
