Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 5 Reaction: Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow – One Magic Trick at a Time
2026/10/22
Who doesn’t let a person finish a love letter?! Louisa finally gets to know the contents of Martin’s love letter.
This week Carol, Mel, and Gabriela join me for Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 5, “Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow.” (Doug is off on a special Podcast Portwenn assignment.) Folks, we could NOT wait to talk about this one.
When a traveling magician’s wife (Megan Li Wang) dies at the Salty Breeze, Martin Best (Josh Charles) looks for every physical explanation for her husband’s behavior. Doh! It’s not physical, Martin! Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) knows better, because she’s seen it before… Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) has his own theory. It’s always the husband, right? We tip our hats to Jack DiFalco as Paul the magician, and give big kudos to the writers for knowing when less is more.
Also on the table:
Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) finds the letter and thinks it’s for her. Cue Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer) panicking on the inside. In walks Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), Martin’s new medical monitor. Gabriela calls him the Hallmark Man. Carol calls him a kiss-up. Charming or smarmy?A playful boat date, a hoodie out the window, and a missing belt. Continuity slip, a convenient purse item, or a clue?Al Large (Carter Shimp) and Elaine Denton (Cree) at cross purposes over dorm sheets, paint colors, and showing up when it counts.George Brady (Jason Veasey) and Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella) talk over each other so fast that Carol turned on closed captions. Why did the Best family never talk about Rosemary? I share a bit of my own family history. See full description here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTp7sP0m5y8&t=1929sEden’s last stop on the way out of town. IYKYK.Savannah’s back in the previews! How long IS exotic-animal prison?Your turn: Is Parker charming or smarmy? Or something else? A night of sleep after recording, Chesla is starting to think he’s the pits. Tell us in the comments, and feel free to reply to each other too. Just keep it kind!
No new Best Medicine episode next week, so we’ll see you after the hiatus. Thank you to Becky, Lisa, Landree, Lisa McConnell, Katrina Ann, and all our new commenters and subscribers! Please like, subscribe, and comment.

Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 4 Bonus: No Place Like Om – Hot Goss & Shenanigans
2026/10/16
Carol missed our “No Place Like Om” taping thanks to a power outage. Now the lights are back on, and she’s watched both the episode AND our panel. So what did the rest of us miss?
In this Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 4 bonus, Carol and I dig into the moments that tugged at her heart, starting with Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) walking the graduation stage while Sally Mylow (Clea Lewis) looks on. Carol connects it to a Season 1 callback you may have forgotten: Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer), a bottle of vitamin C, and a crack about “couples counseling.”
What we get into:
The Happy Grove retreat: Martin Best (Josh Charles) says “no shenanigans,” and Mark is instantly drawn to Yuzu. Squirrel! Is Martin actually eager to get to Boston and Eden (Eliza Coupe)? Carol noticed something missing at the end of those phone callsAunt Sarah (Annie Potts) and Eddie McCroy (Terrence Mann): George Brady (Jason Veasey) calls it “hot goss.” Is Eddie really breathing too loud? And did Martin learn his commitment issues from his aunt?Robert (Martin Clunes) and Vanessa (Judith Ivey) have a long marriage. Why has Martin never found “the one”? Is it related to Rosemary or something else?Martin and Louisa as a team with Fred (Barry Pearl), plus some gentle teasing on the dock. Is the new arrival, Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), about to stir things up?Glendon Roth (Patch Darragh): grown-up bully, richest guy in town, and maybe not the last word on Martin’s pastMark and Sally after graduation. Can Mark grow up and stay a little goofy?George, the lobster rolls, and “the genius of AND”Your turn: Is Sarah protecting her independence or just making excuses? Should Mark keep his goofiness? Tell us in the comments and remember to subscribe and like on whatever platform you prefer.
Catch the full panel episode with Mel, Gabriela, and Doug, then come back for Carol’s take.

Best Medicine Season 2 Episode 4 Reaction: No Place Like Om – Tugged at Our Hearts
2026/10/15
Martin Best (Josh Charles) has one goal this weekend: get out of Port Wenn and meet Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) in Boston. A busted windshield, a missed bus, three patients behaving very strangely after a meditation retreat... Does he make it? You’ll have to watch.
This week Mel, Gabriela, and Doug join me for Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 4, “No Place Like Om.” The gang agreed this one runs more on heart than comedy. (Did it try to cram in one storyline too many? I have opinions.)
What we get into:
The Happy Grove retreat: Martin flexes some authority, a mud bath, a $100 bribe to Saffron, and Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) finds his zen at exactly the wrong momentLouisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer) juggling an IVF test and her first graduation speech as principal, with Elaine Denton (Cree) as roommate, cheerleader, and editor. Plus my science rant on “shoot for the moon.” Sorry, not sorry.Sally Mylow (Clea Lewis), a neck brace worn for 35 years, and Mark’s “I never grew up.” Gabriela brings the codependency researchAunt Sarah (Annie Potts) and a very cleaned-up Eddie McCroy (Terrence Mann). Commitment issues? Gabriela thinks so, as does Geneva (Didi Conn)George Brady (Jason Veasey), Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella), and what lobster rolls really mean to Port WennFred, played by Barry Pearl. Yes, Doody from Grease!Two-word Tim, the colorblind pill sorter. How the heck does he have this job?Commenter Almerita Galeone asks: is Al’s mom still alive?Predictions: can Louisa resist Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott) or is she a sucker for an accent? Eden finds THE letter. What should she do with it?Plus we rank this episode against the rest of Season 2 and pick our favorite major and minor characters.
Your turn: Was it really the timing? Was Louisa’s cliché-filled first draft a setup for the speech that followed? Mel and I see Eden’s next move differently. Whose side are you on? Tell us in the comments.

Best Medicine S2E3 Reaction Crate Expectations: Karaoke Night, the Crate Race & Louisa’s Date
2026/10/08
Mel, Carol, and Gabriela join Chesla to dig into Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 3, “Crate Expectations.” It’s karaoke night in Port Wenn!
Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) grabs the mic, and the gang splits on whether her singing is comedy gold or something to watch through your fingers. Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) throws himself into it, but is the town’s teasing of Eden a welcome or a warning? Martin Best (Josh Charles) has her back, though nobody’s sold on how he says “girlfriend.” And Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella) and George Brady (Jason Veasey) prove once again that they hold the town together.
When Lorenzo (Malachi Nimmons) keeps fainting, Chesla suspects the “Mary Hart effect,” but the real cause surprised everyone. Meanwhile, a positive pregnancy test among the male sea urchin workers, including Blake (Brandon Gilpin), sets off a testicular cancer hunt. Is Glendon rehabilitated, or still the bully who won’t let Martin forget his childhood crate race? The group digs into their history.
Aunt Sarah Best (Annie Potts) coaches Peter Cronk (Ben Lewis Doherty), who then coaches Martin. Chesla (nerd!) wonders if that makes it transitive coaching, while Gabriela sees Peter as Sarah’s similar-to-Martin second chance. So why did Peter run right past Martin’s open arms? There’s also a family of fibbers, some fixed crates, and “Marty One Crate.”
Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer) and Mark both have dates out of town. IVF becomes a first-date icebreaker, and “now you made me be mean” divides the group, with Gabriela as Louisa’s number one defender. Then there’s that hug after the crate race.
Elaine Denton (Cree) gets to show her character’s depth plus gives Al Large (Carter Shimp) a much-needed talking-to about Bert Large (John DiMaggio).
Plus: guest actors celebrating their TV debuts, how well the writers capture Gen Z humor, Chesla feels good about a GOAT coincidence, and predictions about whether Martin makes it to Boston.

Best Medicine S2E2: "Breakin' In Is Hard to Do" Did Eden set up the prank?
2026/10/01
Best Medicine Season 2, Episode 2, "Breakin' In Is Hard to Do": the Port Wenn pharmacy gets robbed, Louisa's time-sensitive fertility medication is among the missing items, and the town gives Martin Best (Josh Charles) a "welcome" he did NOT ask for. Teasing as a love language, or just plain mean? We argue. A lot.
Two panels this week. (I couldn't get everyone in one room, and yes, I forgot to hit record the first time. Doh!) Carol and Chris share a theory that had me saying "I hadn't thought of that": did Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) have a hand in the prank? Then Mel, Gabriela and Doug fight it out over whether Eden is a sweet, misunderstood girlfriend or a woman who brings her own cutlery to lunch, carries a switchblade, and thinks a Friday the 13th-style summer camp massacre is funny. (Chesla askes, “Dexter, anyone?”)
Also in this one:
- A pharmacy, bistro, and doctor’s office robbery mystery. Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra), Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer), and Martin as "Sherlock and Holmes" and an unforgettable fertility quip.
- Gina (Nadia Dajani) rolls a Brooklyn pizza truck up next to Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella) and George Brady (Jason Veasey) at the Salty Breeze. Hot dog cart vs. half-off pizza, and a town with zero loyalty.
- Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) tries to bond with Eden. It lasts about half a second.
- Old Man Collins and his adult diapers. Trust us.
- Elaine Denton (Cree) and Al Large (Carter Shimp) raise cash, but at what cost?
- Robert Best is coming back, played by Martin Clunes (yes, THAT Martin Clunes, which we're still gleeful about), plus Sally Mylow (Clea Lewis) and a bigger role for Bert Large (John DiMaggio).
- 80s movie references that sent Mel back to rewatch, and a debate about Louisa's baby plan we're still not done having.
So tell us: is Eden a force for good or for evil? Was the teasing affection or cruelty? Will Elaine really stay in New York? Drop your thoughts in the comments. We work your comments into the episodes now, and UK viewers, we'd love to hear from you too. If you're enjoying the show, please like, subscribe and share. We're closing in on 200 YouTube subscribers!

Best Medicine S2E1 Reaction: A Mermaid, a Blood Phobia & Is Eden Friend or Foe?
2026/09/23
Best Medicine Season 2 is here, and so is a new format! I'm trying to incorporate your suggestions from last year's survey, so this time Gen Z panelist Gabriela and I trade hot takes, then my Unspoiled panel (Mel, Doug, and Carol Doehler, none of whom have seen Doc Martin) takes over. Every few episodes, I plan to have Doc Martin-spoiled Best Medicine fans giving their takes.
Five months have passed in Port Wenn, and writer Liz Tuccillo wastes no time tying up the Season 1 finale's loose ends. Al Large (Carter Shimp) is headed to school in New York. Is Elaine (Cree) going with him? And why is Al still giving Bert (John DiMaggio) grief?
Then there's Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe). She has redecorated the office, put Elaine in a dental-assistant coat, and is also Louisa's fertility doctor. Gabriela thinks there's nothing wrong with Eden. Doug thinks she's conniving and points to one "I need to see Louisa" moment as proof. Freudian slip, or all part of the plan? Meanwhile Peter Cronk (Ben Lewis Doherty) and poor Copernicus are being pushed aside, and Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) says Martin (Josh Charles) has taken a few steps backward.
Louisa (Abigail Spencer) is juggling IVF, two jobs, and a lot of loneliness. Watching her third-wheel on the couch with Al and Elaine hurt a little. Martin's blood phobia also goes public, and Aunt Sarah is not happy about who got told first.
This episode also brings us a mermaid. Cecilia washes up in Port Wenn, and Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) handles her story with more heart (and more actual police work) than we've seen from him before. Is this the grown-up Mark we've been waiting for? We also get Sally Mylow (Clea Lewis) and that neck brace, the Judith (Andrea Martin), Geneva (Didi Conn), and Aunt Sarah trio (more of them, please!), and the teens (decrepit? Puh-LEASE!). Plus the sea urchin economy at the Salty Breeze, a smoking gag that had us crying with laughter, and what increased tourism can mean for a town like Port Wenn. Speaking of smoking, good messages: don’t smoke, if you have a mental health crisis, getting professional help is good, and phones can be addictive!
So tell us in the comments: Eden, friend or foe? Who should Mark end up with? Too soon for everyone to learn about the phobia? And a question for our UK viewers: when Louisa pays for her own IVF, or someone jokes that mermaids don't have insurance, how does that land for you if you're used to the NHS?
If you're enjoying the show, please subscribe, like, and comment. See you next week, Besties!

Best Medicine Season 2 Preview: A Gen Z Fan's Hot Takes on Martin, Louisa & the New Love Pentagon
2026/09/12
Season One of Best Medicine ended in a tangle of misunderstandings, and I’ll have a Season Two podcast guest to help sort it out: Gabriela, a Gen Z viewer who runs with a whole Discord group of fellow fans. She found the show on Hulu (blood-phobic doctor, sold), then went back and watched Doc Martin to see where it all started. She’ll be bringing her group chat's best theories with her.
We also get into whether Al (Carter Shimp) should actually take one of those college acceptances or stick around Port Wenn for Elaine (Cree). Gabriela's take, as someone closer to Al's age than I am, might surprise you.
Then there's the Best family. Robert (Martin Clunes) is confirmed to be returning, we debate whether he and his wife Vanessa are actually still together given what we know about Robert's gambling and Vanessa's very "radical honesty" psychology style. Glendon (Patch Darragh) gets the villain treatment too — we dig into why he's so threatened by Martin (Josh Charles) taking his spot as Port Wenn's big man around town.
Of course we can't skip Martin and Louisa (Abigail Spencer). Between Eden (Eliza Coupe), Sheriff Mark (Josh Segarra)'s proposal, and a new monitor named Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott) throwing a whole love pentagon into the mix, Gabriela and I both have opinions about where this actually goes by the end of season two. We also talk through what it would take to get Robert and Martin in a room to finally deal with the accident and Rosemary — and yes, we go there on generational trauma and why Martin's blood phobia shows up when it does. Plus: baby, or no baby, for Louisa?

Doc Martin Season 7 Newbie Reaction: Couples Therapy, a Taser, and Patty's Big Told-You-So
2026/09/06
Patty has said it for seasons: Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) keeps putting Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) into situations he was never going to survive, then treats the wreckage as proof she was right. In Season 7, Dr. Rachel Timoney (Emily Bevan) asks whether Louisa is setting Martin up to fail on purpose, and whether that is really about avoiding intimacy. I could not WAIT for Patty to get to this season. She’s been so on target with her comments. And I loved her reaction enough to make it the intro for the episode.
Season 7 opens with Louisa in Spain for three weeks with no contact, and Martin just getting on with it until Aunt Ruth (Dame Eileen Atkins) points out how odd that is. Then comes the therapy: three hugs a day, three nice things, and an actual date at the restaurant where they first met. Also one of the great fake-out lines in the whole series. IYKYK. It involves a sweater. And the picnic! Great to see Angela Sim (Caroline Quentin), Martin’s Men Behaving Badly better half, join in the fun.
Patty's other verdicts. She really loves Aunt Ruth and PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez) has crossed from annoying to endearing, although her sentiments don’t extend to ‘competent’. Who thought it was a good idea to arm Penhale?! Peter Cronk (Preston Nyman) turns up aged fifteen and starts bossing Morwenna Newcross (Jessica Ransom) around, which got us ranking all three receptionists - Elaine Denham (Lucy Punch), Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson), Morwenna - and me asking whether Best Medicine's Elaine Denton (Cree) is a composite of the lot. We also get into whether Martin Best (Josh Charles) changed more in one season than Martin Ellingham has in seven. Patty has had enough of Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell) and Danny Steel (Tristan Sturrock).
Then there's the dog. Martin decides Buddy has to go, permanently, and neither of us could get past it. Patty watched it wondering how I was going to defend it. I did not. Did this fly in the UK? In the US, the dog can NEVER die. It’s a rule. (Well, it should be).
Plus Sigourney Weaver wanders into Portwenn as Beth Traywick (Patty wants more!), and Gemma Jones closes the season as Annie Winton in a hostage situation that becomes the sharpest mirror Martin and Louisa have had yet.

Doc Martin Season 6 Newbie Reaction: "He's Not the Only One Who Has to Change"
2026/09/02
Season 6 opens with the Ellingham wedding and ends with depression, disillusion, and a surgery that should never have happened. Patty came into this one off a season 5 finale she loved — and this season did not clear that bar.
She's firmly on Team Martin (Martin Clunes) at this point, though she gives Louisa (Caroline Catz) points where they're earned. Aunt Ruth Ellingham (Eileen Atkins) — stalker and all — and Joe Penhale (John Marquez) have both endeared themselves to Patty, and the Al (Joe Absolom) and Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) spark has caught her interest. She's even a fan of Mike Pruddy (Felix Scott) as a childminder, OCD and all. Bert (Ian McNeice) grates on her more every episode for how often Al has to bail him out of his own scrapes. Of course we agree that Margaret Ellingham (Claire Bloom) is despicable. And Patty thinks Mrs. Tishell (Selina Cadell) came back not quite right — and downright mean to Jennifer Cardew (Annabelle Apsion).
What she can't forgive: playgroup, and then sports day. Patty's read is that Louisa keeps putting Martin in situations where he's set up to fail, then treats the failure as evidence. "He wants to fix it. He's gonna need some help with how — but she has to wanna fix it too, and he's not the only one that has to change."
Here’s your assignment:
- Up through season 6, were/are you on Team Martin or Team Louisa and why?
- Are you from the UK? How did season 6 sit with you when you saw it the first time?
- What are your thoughts on “You’re my patient. And you’re my wife?”

Best Medicine Season 2 Preview: Love Pentagon, Blood Phobia Goes Public, Mark Finally Gets Love
2026/08/30
Best Medicine is scrubbing up for Season 2, and so is Podcast Portwenn! For the first time, the whole Season 2 Unspoiled panel is together. Doug from New Jersey is back from our Season 1 crew, and he's joined by Mel from Maryland and Carol from Colorado.
First things first: Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) finally has some fans. Mark didn't get a lot of love from last season's panel, but Mel and Carol are here to fix that. Yes, he's a doofus. He's also a good guy, and this season he's getting his due.
Now, about that love pentagon. We're picking up five months later, and let's count: Martin Best (Josh Charles), Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer), Mark, Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) who is somehow still in town (is she commuting?), and a brand-new arrival apparently sent to keep an eye on Martin after Glendon Ross (Patch Darragh) reported those blood draws to the medical review board. How many people can be in one love pentagon? Yikes. The panel does not agree on this one, and how many are too many?
There's plenty more to chew on. Does Al Large (Carter Shimp) actually leave for college, and what does that do to him and Elaine Denton (Cree)? Did the sea urchin money change Aunt Sarah Best (Annie Potts)? And now that Martin's blood phobia is about to become public knowledge, is that finally what gets him talking to his father, Robert Best (Martin Clunes)? We have three completely different theories about how those two ever have that conversation.
Plus a little casting news: Andrea Martin is joining the show, and Greg Garrison (Stephen Spinella) and George Brady (Jason Veasey) got promoted to series regulars. (George has always been my fave, so I was very pleased.)
No answers here, just three fans on the record before the season proves us right or wrong.
Available now: I went to Dorset, England for Buckham Fair and met Martin Clunes. There’s a podcast episode for that!
So tell me. Is Louisa better off with someone uncomplicated, or is that just Martin's cue to wake up? Does Al go to NYC? And are you Team Mark yet? Leave a comment on YouTube. I read all of them, I answer all of them, and I've started bringing some into the podcast. This is my little hobby, but if you're not happy, I'm not happy.

Take Me To The Fair: What Was Buckham Fair Like?
2026/08/25
Podcast Portwenn goes off-script for a special episode and the video version is not to be missed. Over the last few months, Chesla invited you to donate to Buckham Fair, a fundraiser for the Dorset County Hospital's Emergency and Critical Care unit hosted by Martin Clunes and Philippa Braithwaite. You requested an update on how it went, so here it is. This year's fair raised roughly £138,000!
So why would three Americans fly across an ocean for a fair benefiting a UK hospital they will HOPEFULLY never use? Chesla, Chris, and new friend Janice dig into it: the pull of Dorset's countryside, the chance to say thank you in person, and, for Chris and Chesla, the anchor event in a larger Dorset trip.
There's plenty of Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey face time too. Both judged the fair's dog show categories (Fluffiest & Scruffiest, Best Six Legs, and yes, a "dog who looks most like Neil Morrissey" class), and the group compares the stiff, dog-averse Martin Ellingham of the show to the very real Martin Clunes getting mobbed by his own on-set dogs Chicken (real name Taffy) and Paddy.
Chesla also fesses up to an accidental goosing of Martin during a photo opportunity. And in front of her own husband! Sorry Martin! Setup days get their due too — tent stakes in drought-hard ground, zip-tied dog fencing, and a crash course in reading instructions.
Once it's running, the group walks through the scale of the thing: nine dog rings, a heavy horse display including Martin's Clydesdales, a horse trainer (Ben Atkinson) whose methods leave a lasting impression, and the Lamb National — a butcher-sponsored obstacle race of lambs, then kids, then adults, then one very fast sheepdog. And that’s just a subset!
The episode closes on a Tombola raffle gone sideways, which somehow ends with Chesla going home with a cowboy hat donated by Martin. Photo credits go to friends Simo (Martin Clunes Art Project), Janice, Marisa, Chris, and Chesla whose photos and sketches show up throughout.
If you weren't able to donate before the fair wrapped, it’s not too late to donate directly to Dorset County Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Fund: https://dchcharity.org.uk/

Doc Martin Season 5 Newbie Reaction: New Aunt, New Baby, and a Pharmacist's Breakdown
2026/08/14
Doc Martin newbie Patty is back for Season 5, a favorite season for many Doc Martin viewers.
Auntie Joan’s (Stephanie Cole) death hits Patty hard and Aunt Ruth (Dame Eileen Atkins) doesn’t seem like a very warm substitute. Of course, Patty does laugh at Martin’s (Martin Clunes) eulogy of his aunt, which is completely true but, really? Aunt Ruth doesn’t strike Patty as a typically compassionate mental health professional, until Chesla explains that being a psychiatrist at Broadmoor isn’t a typical mental health assignment.
Patty and Chesla discuss whether Martin is on the autism spectrum, triggered by Aunt Ruth making the surprising statement that people don’t change. Does she mean people who might be psychologically predisposed to missing social cues or does she just think she knows Martin well enough that he’s fixed in his ways due to his horrible upbringing?
Season 5 has other departures and arrivals: Pauline (Katherine Parkinson) is out and Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) is in as the receptionist. We meet Joe Penhale’s (John Marquez) ex-wife Maggie (Julie Graham) and Louisa’s (Caroline Catz) absentee mother, Eleanor (Louise Jameson).
Patty is surprised by Martin’s willingness and aptitude at parenting, and comments again on Louisa’s coping strategy of running away instead of discussing problems.
Both Patty and Chesla really enjoy the final scene of the season, both for it’s normally excellent acting and it’s fantastic writing.
There’s a quick Best Medicine checkin, as well as numerous questions on US vs England ways of doing things. Podcast viewers from England – you know the assignment!
Do you think Martin’s behavior can be entirely explained by his appalling childhood?
Doc Martin Season 4 Newbie Reacts: Total Miscommunication, a Threat Named Edith, and a Baby
2026/08/03
Doc Martin newbie Patty is back for Season 4. Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) wants to go back to London — or does he? Old flame Edith Montgomery (Lia Williams) is back in his orbit too, and this time she's angling to rekindle the romance, while Martin seems interested in her strictly as a colleague. Patty is not a fan of Edith either way.
Patty isn't surprised by Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) showing up pregnant, but she is surprised by Martin's lack of growth — or is he actually backsliding? His blood phobia looks all but conquered by season's end... until the baby's messy arrival puts it to the test. There's a surprise of a different kind waiting at the chemist's, too: Patty did not see Mrs. Tishell's (Selina Cadell) husband, Clive (Malcolm Storry), coming. What's going on there?
Patty also digs into PC Joe Penhale's (John Marquez) brother storyline and its unexpected forgery twist, plus the Al (Joe Absolom), Bert Large (Ian McNeice), and Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson) relationship tangle — is Bert actually looking for love this time? Patty is warming up to him.
Finally, the big payoff: the car chase, the birth, and Martin holding his own baby for the first time — though of course, he can't resist a comment.
Since Patty has also watched Best Medicine Season 1, we close with a compare-and-contrast: how the American version handles its own hairball patient episode differently, how the blood phobia is explained, and what it means that Best Medicine's Eden Montgomery (Eliza Coupe) is teased to return in Season 2 the same way Edith Montgomery keeps reappearing throughout Doc Martin's Season 4. Patty's paying close attention to that one.

Doc Martin Season 3 Newbie Reaction: Mark's Out, Joe's In, and What's Up with Martin and Louisa?
2026/07/24
Doc Martin newbie Patty (a Best Medicine veteran) tears through Season 3, which is a season of surprises. She spends half the season hoping PC Mark Mylow (Stewart Wright) is coming back. She hasn't yet warmed up to his replacement, Joe Penhale (John Marquez). Al Large's (Joe Absolom) return partway through the season was a tease but, alas, no Mark.
Auntie Joan (Stephanie Cole) surprises everyone! IYKYK, right? Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson) gets a jealousy-fueled rival at the surgery AND learns phlebotomy, making her far more useful than S1's Elaine (Lucy Punch).
Then there's the big one: the Martin-and-Louisa Glasson (Martin Clunes, Caroline Catz) will-they-won't-they finally does, um, something. Patty walks through the concert date gone wrong, the mood-swing comment, the breakup, and everything that follows. Chesla and Patty cover what's believable, what the motivations of Martin and Louisa might be, and what it might mean for their futures.
Martin Ellingham is, well, Martin: rude, blunt, whatever word you want to use — and some British terms send Patty and Chesla down a rabbit hole comparing US and UK vocabulary (Decrepit! Really?). They also start connecting the physical abuse hinted at in Martin's childhood to his bedside manner, and discuss how much compassion Martin has for patients compared to his drive to solve the medical mystery and heal.
Best Medicine chat centers around composite characters: is Elaine (Cree) a composite of Elaine and Pauline? Is Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra) a composite of Mark and Joe? Plus, inevitably, dog comparisons.
Season 3 leaves Patty more eager for Season 4 than any previous season-ending cliffhanger did. If you're English, help us Yanks out on vocabulary and whether you think the characters of Doc Martin seem genuine.
If you have questions you wished Chesla would have asked, comment. If you have future-season questions you want asked, send her an email.

Doc Martin Season 2 Newbie Reaction: Patty on Parents, Best Medicine Parallels & Predictions
2026/07/16
Patty the Newbie is back for Doc Martin Season 2 with the perspective of a full season of Best Medicine behind her, and she's not shy about the comparisons. Elaine Denham (Lucy Punch) is gone, replaced by the far more competent Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson), and PC Mark Mylow (Stewart Wright) gets his heart broken when his fertility test doesn't go the way he hoped. Martin Ellingham's (Martin Clunes) parents and Louisa Glasson's (Caroline Catz) father finally show up and explain a lot about why Martin and Louisa are the way they are. Patty and Chesla also cover Al Large (Joe Absolom) and Bert Large's (Ian McNeice) own paternity scare, Louisa’s complicated history with Danny Steel (Tristan Sturrock), and the two-part "On the Edge" hostage story that Patty and Chesla have a fundamental disagreement on. Plus: a full Doc Martin vs. Best Medicine face-off, a Britishisms tangent, a tribute to the late Sam Neill, and the line Chesla's been dying to use on someone in real life.
