What does Christian hospitality look like at the end of life? In this conversation, I talk with Tim Lajoie, a Christian hospice chaplain, about what he has learned from accompanying people and families through the final chapter of life. One statistic Tim shared stopped me in my tracks: 84% of patients admitted to hospice identify as Christian. That number made me think differently about Christian end-of-life care. We often hear about spiritually neutral chaplaincy care and secular end-of-life doula training and wonder whether Christian care is being pushed to the margins. But perhaps we are looking at the landscape the wrong way. The generation now entering its later years is, in large part, a generation with some experience of the Christian faith, the Church, Scripture, prayer, and the hope of Christ. For many people approaching death, a spiritual framework rooted in Christ may not be foreign or imposed—it may be deeply familiar. This is why I believe Christian hospitality at the end of life matters so much. We don't need to compete with secular approaches by simply offering a Christian version of the same services. We have something more fundamental to offer: the hope of Christ in the face of death. To be reminded, at the bedside, that death does not have the final word—that Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will raise his people—is a profoundly different kind of care. In this episode, Tim and I talk about hospice chaplaincy, Christian presence, the spiritual needs of the dying, and what it means for the Church to rediscover its vocation of hospitality toward people who are suffering, dying, and grieving. Perhaps the question isn't whether there is a place for Christian end-of-life care. Perhaps the question is whether the Church is ready to welcome people home.
