Ray Campbell: A Gunshot, a Mystery and an Unexpected Connection
2026/10/18
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In September 2002, 38-year-old Ray Campbell was found dead from a gunshot wound at a property in Darwin River, south of Darwin in the Northern Territory.
In the days leading up to his death, Ray had been behaving strangely. He was frightened, convinced that people were after him, and carrying a gun for protection.
But when police began investigating his death, the circumstances surrounding the shooting were far from clear.
What followed was a coronial inquest involving conflicting evidence, questionable witnesses and forensic findings that left investigators with more questions than answers.
And just when you think you've heard the whole story, another Northern Territory case comes into the picture, with a connection that raises some very interesting questions.
In this episode of Territory Famous, we look at the mysterious death of Ray Campbell, the investigation that followed, and an unexpected connection to another unsolved shooting.

Taylie Jade Sweeney: A Friendship Built on Lies
2026/10/10
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In 2008, Taylie Jade Sweeney was a young mum working as a court orderly in Darwin when she met Emily Adam.
The two women hit it off and soon became close friends. They worked together, went shopping, caught up outside of work and, according to Emily, were best mates.
But in 2009, a series of events would bring their friendship to an end and land Taylie in serious trouble with the law.
What started with some rather questionable decisions turned into a story of betrayal and deceit.
This week, we're heading back to Darwin for a story involving friendship, lies and chaos.

The Daly River: Crocodiles, Close Calls and Tragedy
2026/10/04
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
The Daly River is one of the Northern Territory's most iconic waterways. It's also home to some very large saltwater crocodiles.
In this episode of Territory Famous, we look at a series of stories from the Daly River, beginning with the death of 26-year-old Stuart, who entered the river while trying to get away from police in 2010.
We also remember Keith, who was just days away from his 21st birthday when he was taken by a crocodile while attempting to cross the river, and hear the incredible story of Johnny, who survived a crocodile attack in 1990.
Then there are the people who, despite everything we know about the Daly River, still decided that getting into the water was preferable to being arrested.
A warning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander listeners: this episode discusses Aboriginal people who have passed away. I have used first names only throughout the episode out of respect for those featured and their families.

What happened at Wagait Beach? Investigating the death of Jonathan Hempel
2026/09/26
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In June 2018, American soil scientist Jonathan Hempel was living at Wagait Beach, across the harbour from Darwin, with his partner Cathy Lin.
On the night of June 4, the pair caught the ferry home from Cullen Bay. Not long after they arrived at their property, Jonathan was critically injured in an incident involving Cathy's Landcruiser.
At first, what had happened appeared to have a straightforward explanation.
But as police and the NT Coroner began looking more closely at the circumstances surrounding Jonathan’s death, questions emerged that weren’t so easily answered.
What followed was a police investigation, criminal charges and a coronial inquest that would eventually lead Coroner Greg Cavanagh to raise some serious concerns of his own.
This week on Territory Famous, we look at the death of Jonathan Hempel, what happened that night at Wagait Beach, and why years later, there are still questions about exactly what happened.

Matt Wright: The Secret Recordings Played at His Trial
2026/09/20
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
During Matt Wright's 2025 Supreme Court trial, the jury heard a series of secretly recorded conversations and intercepted phone calls involving Wright, his family, friends and colleagues.
In this episode of Territory Famous, I'm taking you inside those recordings.
Some are crystal clear. Others are so difficult to understand that even the people involved in the conversations disputed what could actually be heard. They cover everything from helicopter flight hours and maintenance records to Sebastian Robinson, the crash investigation, what happened at the crash site and Wright's own thoughts about the case against him.
You'll hear a number of the actual recordings that were played to the jury, including conversations the prosecution relied on as part of its case and recordings the defense said supported a very different interpretation of what Wright had been doing.
Where the audio was too poor to be useful (or where I chose not to play it for privacy reasons) I've used the court transcript to explain what was said and how it was used during the trial.
This episode follows my earlier coverage of the Matt Wright trial and contains strong language.
Territory Famous covers true stories, court cases, history and some of the more unusual characters and events from Australia's Northern Territory.

Matthew Rosewarne: The Investigation and the Inquest
2026/09/13
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In May 2016, Matthew Rosewarne was found dead at his home in Darwin from a gunshot wound to the neck.
Police believed Matthew had taken his own life, but as more information became available, questions began to emerge about the way his death had been investigated.
There was the position of the gunshot wound, a safety catch that was still engaged, evidence that wasn't collected and parts of the scene that weren't properly examined. Despite those issues, Police remained convinced they knew what had happened.
Eventually, Matthew's death went before the NT Coroner, where the original investigation came under serious scrutiny.
In this episode of Territory Famous, I go through Matthew's life and his struggles with alcohol, the events leading up to his death, what happened during the police investigation and what eventually came out at the coronial inquest.
This is also a case that raises some bigger questions about investigative bias and what can happen when Police settle on one explanation early in an investigation.
A quick apology before you listen — my voice still isn't quite 100%, so please bear with me. I didn't want to put this episode off any longer and hopefully it's not too distracting.

The Disappearance of Richard Roe: What Happened at Lake Bennett?
2026/09/06
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In November 2016, Richard Roe disappeared in the Northern Territory.
His car was found abandoned near the Stuart Highway, but Richard was nowhere to be found. Despite an extensive police investigation and searches of the surrounding area, he has never been located.
The circumstances surrounding Richard’s disappearance raised plenty of questions, and the case was eventually examined at a coronial inquest.
In this episode, we look at Richard’s disappearance, the investigation and the inquest, and the questions that still remain about what happened to him.
Richard is still very much loved and missed by his family, who have spent years waiting for answers about what happened to him.
If you have information that could help locate Richard or explain his disappearance, there is currently a $250,000 reward for information that leads to his location and, if foul play is established, a conviction.

Richard Woodward & the Ti Tree Roadhouse: One of the Most Bizarre Court Cases in the NT
2026/08/30
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
This episode is a little different from my usual Territory Famous stories.
This is the story of a very unusual man, a Ti Tree Roadhouse, a few trespass notices, some increasingly bizarre legal arguments and what happens when you decide to represent yourself in court.
Richard Woodward was told to leave the Ti Tree Roadhouse after complaints about his behavior. He refused, was eventually arrested, released on bail with conditions not to return without police, and then… well, you can probably guess what happened next.
What makes this story so entertaining is what happened once Richard got into court. He represented himself and brought an extraordinary collection of documents, letters, legal arguments and grievances into the proceedings. Along the way, he managed to bring everyone from Britney Higgins to Caroline Kennedy, the former US Ambassador to Australia, into his increasingly elaborate arguments.
There are High Court letters, Magna Carta, sovereign citizens, 000 calls, alleged conspiracies, a reconciliation dinner, a six-pack of beer and a man who seemed determined to take a relatively straightforward trespass matter as far as the legal system would let him.
Richard's behavior in court reminded me a LOT of Trevor, the Rubbish Warrior. So, if you enjoyed Trevor's particular brand of self-representation, bizarre legal arguments and increasingly spectacular court appearances, I have a feeling you're going to enjoy this one.
This is the very strange story of Richard Woodward and the Ti Tree Roadhouse.

The disappearance of Peter Murphy: The Evidence, The Inquest and The Trial
2026/08/23
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
First, I just want to apologize for my voice, I had laryngitis last week and was still recovering from that at the time of recording. Hopefully the content makes up for it, it's a pretty crazy story and Ive been wanting to get it out for a couple of weeks,
So, this week I'm taking a deep dive into the disappearance of Peter Wayne Murphy, a case that eventually led to a coronial inquest and a murder trial.
The evidence surrounding Peter's disappearance is complicated, involving drugs, guns, bikies, money, business relationships and a number of people whose lives were closely connected.
For this episode I've gone through the court documents in detail, including evidence about conversations between the people involved, alleged drug dealings, debts, recordings and evidence that was ultimately challenged in court.
There are a lot of names and a lot of twists and turns in this one, and I may or may not have spent a considerable amount of time wishing I had a giant board with pictures and red string to keep track of everything.

Update for the next couple of weeks
2026/08/16
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
Hey its Kellie, I'm so sorry last week's croaky voice turned into a case of full-blown laryngitis and unfortunately, I couldn't record the episode I had planned for this week. Please check back in next week as it's a big one and one of the crazier types of stories I've covered which is saying something!
I also will be putting out an episode with updates on the Matt Wright saga, including the recordings that have been released which I have now and will be talking about on the episode. Whether I can play them or parts of them I need to look into, but I will be bringing you all of the details either way. I will probably have that one out the week after next.
Again, I'm so sorry I have nothing new this week but please look out for next week's episode because if you enjoy the stories Ive covered so far, this one will be a good one.
Cheers, Kel ;)
Cahills Crossing: The Warnings Are There for a Reason
2026/08/09
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
I apologise in advance for my voice in this episode! I’ve been quite sick this week and I’m still getting my voice back, so this is a shorter episode than usual. I had a much bigger episode planned for this week, but I really wanted to get something out for you guys rather than nothing at all.
And when I saw the recent footage from Cahills Crossing, I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
Cahills Crossing, on the East Alligator River in Kakadu National Park, is one of those places that has become almost infamous for people underestimating the danger. There are warning signs, a viewing platform and plenty of information telling visitors to keep away from the water, but people still get dangerously close.
In this episode, I talk about the recent viral footage showing children playing right at the water’s edge while a large saltwater crocodile moves through the water nearby. Experts who examined the footage said the crocodile appeared to be following a fish rather than deliberately approaching the children, but that doesn’t make the situation any less dangerous.
I also look back at two confirmed fatal crocodile attacks at Cahills Crossing.
In 1987, 40-year-old Kerry McLoughlin was killed while fishing at the crossing. I found contemporary reporting from the time which included eyewitness accounts of the attack and some incredible details about what happened that day.
I also talk about the 2017 death of a 47-year-old man who disappeared while crossing the river. One of the most powerful accounts I found came from former Northern Territory police officer Sam, who was involved in the search and recovery operation. Sam later spoke about what happened and the impact of seeing someone he knew die in such horrific circumstances.
I also share my own experience crossing a croc-infested river in the Territory and why river crossings still make me extremely nervous.
This is a shorter episode, but I wanted to talk about Cahills Crossing because the recent footage was a pretty confronting reminder that the warnings aren't there for decoration.
The crocodiles were there first.
Maybe I'll come back to Cahills Crossing in a future episode and tell some of the other crazy stories from the crossing, because there are plenty of them.

In this episode of Territory Famous, I explore the case of Valerie Wurramara and the investigation that followed on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory.

The Stuart Highway Mystery: The Joshua & Deborah Mason Case
2026/07/26
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In 2022, a disturbing discovery on the Stuart Highway left Northern Territory police with more questions than answers.
A human leg had been found beside the highway, but police didn’t know who it belonged to, what had happened, or whether there was a missing person somewhere out there.
What followed was an investigation that slowly pieced together the events of one night — a crash, a decision not to call police, and an attempt to conceal what had happened.
In this episode, I take you through the events leading up to the crash, the investigation that eventually uncovered the truth, and the very different roles played by Joshua Mason and his mother, Deborah.
I also look at their lives before the offending, the circumstances surrounding their decisions that night, and what the judge considered when sentencing them.
This is a story about a woman who lost her life, a family left grieving, and the consequences of the decisions made afterwards.
This episode discusses death, grief, alcohol, drug use, mental health, suicide and criminal offending.

The Night a Plane Was Stolen in Alice Springs
2026/07/19
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
In August 2000, a quiet morning at Alice Springs Airport turned into one of the Territory’s most unusual aviation tragedies.
Bryan Dallos had been receiving treatment for serious mental illness when he left the hospital where he was being cared for. Days later, he entered the general aviation area of Alice Springs Airport, gained access to an aircraft, and took off in a plane he was not trained to fly.
The flight ended in tragedy when the aircraft crashed shortly after take-off, leaving behind a series of questions that would be examined during a Northern Territory coronial inquest.
In this episode of Territory Famous, we look at Bryan Dallos’ story, the events leading up to the crash, the investigation, and the recommendations that followed, including questions around mental health services, communication between agencies, airport security, and aviation crash investigations in the Northern Territory.
This is a story about a tragic chain of events, a complex set of circumstances, and the difficult questions left behind after a life was lost.

Goat Island, NT: The Pub Surrounded by Crocodiles
2026/07/05
Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode!
Goat Island isn't what you think it is.
Despite the name, there aren't any goats.
What you will find is a pub in the middle of the crocodile-infested Adelaide River, a Danish bloke known as King Kai, a "pet" crocodile named Casey, a tiny dog that spent years chasing a three-metre saltwater crocodile, and a frying pan that somehow became part of Territory history.
In this episode of Territory Famous, I dive into the bizarre story of Goat Island Lodge, the man who bought an island because he hated traffic lights, the heartbreaking fate of Pippa the terrier, and the stories that have made this one of the Northern Territory's most unique destinations.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to have a beer surrounded by some of Australia's biggest saltwater crocodiles, this one's for you
