#20 From False Start to a Thriving Studio in Two Years
2026/10/13
Vanessa Munns, a Group Piano University graduate, lives in Beacon, a tiny farming community in the Central Wheat Belt of Western Australia. She drives up to 300km a day to teach. She has rebuilt her studio from scratch - twice - after drought wiped it out. She went through the pandemic having just had her ability to teach in state schools taken away overnight.
And she has built a six-figure income from teaching piano and music in the middle of the Australian outback.
This episode is one of the most awesome conversations we’ve had on the podcast!
Vanessa's mindset, her resilience, her absolute refusal to let geography or circumstance stop her - it is genuinely inspiring.
In this episode, you'll discover:
How Vanessa built her studio twice - and watched drought wipe it out both times
The teaching model that actually works
The day that 50 new students became part of her weekly schedule
That time when a school asked her to write a five-year music program dream list
Why being remote actually worked in her favour
What Whole Body Learning did for her neurodiverse students
The teaching track that transformed her students’ progress more than anything else
The mindset that took her from side income to six figures

#19 From Side Hustle to Teaching Full-Time with Groups
2026/09/30
She was told you can't make a proper job out of teaching piano.
She has 80 students.
Lorraine lives on Malta - a tiny island in the Mediterranean with a small population. For years she taught piano on the side while holding down a day job. She knew she wanted more. She just couldn't see how to get there.
Then she found group piano, and enrolled in Group Piano University. And on the 1st of May this year, she handed in her notice at her day job, and went all in on teaching groups!
Four months later she had grown to almost 80 students - with four brand new classes starting in October.
This episode is for every piano teacher who has ever wondered whether teaching could actually be their main gig - a real career.
Lorraine's answer is YES!
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why Lorraine learned piano in a shared lesson as a child - and why that's completely different to real group teaching
The moment she decided to go all in and leave her day job behind
How she grew to almost 80 students in four months of going full-time
Why she was terrified to have parents in the room at first - and why she now actively encourages it
Navigating space challenges
Advice for teachers who are teaching as a side hustle
About Lorraine
Lorraine is a piano teacher based in Malta who completed Group Piano University and went full-time with group piano teaching in May of this year. She is growing her studio toward 80 students and is building toward her dream of owning her own dedicated music school space.

#18 Start Your Groups in the Space You Already Have
2026/09/16
It's been a busy few weeks here as Paul and I have been doing pre-enrolment chats with piano teachers for Group Training University. What's surprised me is that so many teachers have done other courses that exist out there on group piano teaching, but still haven't taught their first group!
It got me thinking about what's stopping them... Maybe it's that they don't feel confident enough or they want to get it all perfect first - I think a lot of us suffer from perfection paralysis! Gosh, know I’ve suffered from both perfectionism AND not feeling confident enough. But what I’ve learned is that both of those things are a trap.
And when it comes to teaching groups, I think the biggest obstacle or roadblock many put in their way is that they think they don't have space. They say, "I can't start until I have the right space."
But what if that wasn't true?
In this episode, I speak with two Group Piano University graduates - Victoria from Australia and Akera from the US - who just got started with what they had. I call this Imperfect Action.
Victoria had spent the last few years raising her young family, and rather than going back to her professional career, she wanted to build something of her own. That meant that, rather than having an established studio and teaching reputation, she was starting from scratch - with zero students.
She secured a church hall on Thursday afternoons because that was the only day it was available and started her first groups. But then something happened... she was then getting a lot of enquiries for Saturday lessons. So rather than putting them off, she made it happen by rearranging the family room on Friday evenings and starting those classes. Check out the podcast to hear where she’s at now. It’s a great story!
Akera on the other hand started in her lounge room, rearranging furniture to fit four pianos and teaching her first groups while her husband slowly came around to the idea. Nine months later, Akera is starting this school year in a brand new space she found nearby that's big enough to hold all the pianos, including her baby grand, and classes are filling up.
Neither of them waited until everything was perfect; both just kept moving forward.
I've seen this time and time again. Piano teachers are creative and inventive creatures, and we find solutions to all sorts of problems in our teaching and also in our studios!
In this episode, you’ll see -
How Victoria built a studio from zero - no students, no space, no existing piano teaching career
How Akera went from lounge room to her own dedicated studio in under a year
The range of spaces that can be used just to get started
The strategy behind starting small

Part 2 is about the logistics side - like how much to charge, how to work groups into your schedule
Part 3 outlines the 4 foundations to long-term success with groups. If you've crashed and burned with groups before, 9 times out of 10 it will be because you were missing at least one of these four foundations

What does a great group piano lesson actually look like?
In this episode we share a real life group piano lesson in action - stopping along the way to unpack exactly what is happening, why it works, and the activities and teaching tips you can take into your own studio.

We also share a beautiful message from Bethany, a recent Group Piano University graduate in the US, who just taught her very first group class.
And if you've been curious about the Group Piano Breakthrough Series - this episode gives you a real window into what groups can look like, and what's possible when the teaching is done well.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why Whole Body Learning happens before anyone touches the piano - and what that does for learning
How to use articulation in the body and voice to prepare students for what they need to do with their hands
Why two-handed coordination is so much easier when it's prepared through movement
The power of musical cues instead of words

#13 How to Teach Improvisation in The First Lesson (No Jazz Degree Required)
2026/06/24
When you hear the word ‘improvisation’, if you picture one of these smoky dens where these really cool jazz dudes sit in an almost meditative state, playing and improvising with their mates whilst being completely immersed and at one with the music? They have these crazy cool riffs at their finger tips and you think how on earth can you do that? How on earth could I ever teach that? I can't even do it myself!
For most we just weren’t taught improvisation. It wasn’t part of how we learned piano. So the whole improvising piece seems a mystery and belongs to a select few.
But here's the thing: that gap in our own learning doesn't have to become a gap in our students' experience. If we keep waiting until we feel "qualified" to explore improvisation, we end up passing on the same limitation to the next generation of pianists. And that's a cycle worth breaking
In this episode, Paul and I tackle one of the most requested topics from piano teachers worldwide. We show you exactly how to get a complete beginner creating their own music from the very first lesson
We walk you through a beautifully simple approach that gives you the confidence to introduce improvisation right away, whether you've ever improvised yourself or not.
And as a bonus, we share a video of Paul doing this exact activity with a real adult student in his very first lesson — so you can see it in action before you try it yourself.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why So Many Teachers Avoid Improvisation (t's not your fault)What Paul's Master's Research RevealedWhy Improvisation Belongs in Lesson OneThe Copy Me Game: a simple activity that works with any age or levelHow to Use Backing Tracks to Support YouThe Science Behind Why Improvisation Matters

#12 Every Piano Teacher Needs to Know this Japanese Warm-up Game
2026/06/09
Looking for something engaging, fun, and packed with real musicianship skills to bring into your studio?
This episode is a little different - and so much fun!
Paul recently ran this traditional Japanese clapping game with a group of teachers at Top Music Live in Sydney, and the room had an absolute ball. In this episode, we walk you through the activity, unpack the pedagogy behind it, and then we show you the video of Paul leading the teachers so you can try it for yourself.
You’re going to love it!
It's called Omochio Tsukimasho - and the version Paul shares has been beautifully modernized for today's students.
This is one of those activities that works for every age group, every level, and every setting.
Whether you're running a group class, a summer camp, an end-of-term lesson, or you just want to inject some energy and connection into your teaching week - this one delivers every time.
And the best part? It doesn't matter if anyone makes a mistake.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why this traditional Japanese clapping game is the perfect warm-up or ice-breaker for any age group
How Paul establishes the beat without saying a word - and why that matters
The simple layering approach that gets everyone engaged, laughing, and learning at the same time
Why mistakes don't matter in this activity - and what that unlocks in your students
How backing tracks teach the foundational musicianship skill that pays off at the piano afterwards
Why this activity is perfect for end-of-term classes, summer camps, and group lessons
What to watch for in the video:
Before you watch, here are a few things to look out for:
Paul doesn't start with the music. He gets everyone feeling the beat first - and then teaches the words a little at a time, with the beat already underneath.
Watch how he moves his body to place the beat and the whole room follows without even realizing they're learning.
Once the beat and words are locked in, he layers in the second part. That's where the fun really begins.
And notice how nobody stops when they make a mistake. They laugh, catch the beat, and keep going. That is such a freeing experience for students - and such a powerful way to build foundational music skills.

#11 What happens when piano students become active music makers? With composer, Elissa Milne
2026/05/27
“Because we have keys [on a piano] we can press, it’s so tempting to turn the keys into a data entry exercise, and to think if we get the data wrong, the calculations will come out wrong. You could play all the wrong notes with the right rhythm, and it’s music.”
What if the way we've been teaching piano is actually getting in the way of real musicianship?
That's just one of the ideas Elissa Milne drops in this conversation, and it's one you won't stop thinking about.
Elissa and I sat down together at Top Music Live in Sydney, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat listening to this conversation as we explore the big picture and grand philosophies behind music making.
It’s funny, thought-provoking, and game-changing. Elissa is one of Australia's most beloved and internationally recognised composers, the mind behind Little Peppers, Pepperbox Jazz, and pieces that piano teachers and students around the world have been playing for decades.
If you've ever wondered how to build musicians who are truly expressive, this episode is for you. In this episode, you'll discover:
(00:00) Why Elissa started writing educational music
(05:00) The compositional philosophy behind her pieces
(10:00) Why she doesn't use her students as "crash test dummies"
(16:00) The Shakespeare analogy that reframes everything about performance
(22:00) Questioning why we become vessels for dead composers’ art
(28:00) A case for mucking around with music
(34:00) The harmonic hologram: a fascinating concept from contemporary music your students will love
(40:00) Why BTS, Taylor Swift, and the supermarket soundtrack matter in the piano studio
(46:00) The two pieces that deserve to be in every exam syllabus

2026/05/13
The children sitting in front of you right now have brains that work entirely differently to the way they did just a few years ago. They’re living in a world where information is accessible at all times.
In this podcast episode, Anita Collins says this will require us, as humans, to evolve. She talks about how we can work with devices and addiction withdrawal and other experiences kids need in their lives that balance the digital world they’re living in.
This is why music is so important for kids right now.

This one will change how you see your work.
In this episode, you'll discover:
How growing up in a screen-saturated world is genuinely reshaping children's brains
What executive function actually is, why it matters, and why it's not developing the same way it did in previous generations

#7 How to Teach Pieces in Group Piano (Without Losing Control of the Class)
2026/04/01
When thinking about group piano, many teachers get stuck on one big question: “How do I teach pieces to multiple students at the same time?”
Because in private lessons, we naturally adapt to each individual student. But in a group setting, that approach simply doesn’t work.
So what’s the solution?

#6 Before You Start Group Piano, Ask This One Question
2026/03/17
When thinking about starting groups many teachers get caught up in the “How will I do this?” question but what they should really be asking themselves is
What is important to me musically and professionally?
In other words, what do you want for your students and yourself from adding groups to your teaching?
And that’s where the principle of “Beginning with the end in mind” made famous by Stephen Covey in his book “Habits of Highly Effective People” comes into play.
Adding groups to your studio can be one of the most powerful ways to teach music but choosing the right format, one that gives both you and your students what you want is key.
In this episode we share how our single level curriculum has enabled us to keep students long term in groups sharing footage of a group of teens who started in groups at 4 or 5 and how they are best of friends - still learning in groups.
Enjoy a peek into our world with real-life examples of groups in action.
See the lasting friendships, performance skills, and strong musical skills students can achieve almost effortlessly in groups.
