Description

Rob Reiner directed some of the most beloved films in American history. On December 14, 2024, he and his wife Michele were stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. Their daughter found the bodies. Their son Nick was arrested that night. This podcast covers the case from arrest through trial — but the real story starts seventeen years earlier. Nick Reiner went to rehab at fifteen. By nineteen, he'd been through seventeen programs. Homeless in three states. Heroin. Meth. His parents had every resource imaginable — money, connections, access to the best treatment in the country. They followed the protocols. They trusted the experts. They did everything right by the system's standards. And the system gave them nothing. Because here's what nobody wants to say out loud: in America, if your adult child is addicted, mentally ill, or dangerous, your legal options are essentially zero. You can beg. You can pay. But you cannot force treatment. Their autonomy is protected. Your safety is not. The Reiners lived that nightmare for almost two decades. It ended the way these stories sometimes do — with two people dead and a family destroyed. This isn't true crime as entertainment. No breathless narration. No shock-jock nonsense. Just rigorous, fact-based coverage with legal experts, former prosecutors, defense attorneys, and behavioral analysts breaking down the evidence, the strategy, and the questions that actually matter. We're following this case because it exposes something broken in how we handle mental illness, addiction, and families in crisis. The Reiners had every advantage. It didn't save them. New episodes as the case develops.

Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster - Blamed WHO, Every Single Night?!
2026/10/10
On September 14, 2015, Rob Reiner premiered Being Charlie in Toronto, a movie his son wrote about a boy failed by every adult around him, on that son's 22nd birthday. Six years earlier, at a Malibu rehab, the boy in the next bed had heard Nick Reiner's version of who was to blame for every bad night and every locked door, every night, after lights out. Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story opens in that room and runs all three parts in one cut, from the Reiner name to Twin Towers jail. Castle Rock put about $3 million behind Being Charlie. Nick Robinson played the son and Cary Elwes played a cold father running for governor, and one critic in Toronto found two warring agendas in one movie. The film made $32,964 worldwide. A podcast host who had Nick on in 2016 asked him to pass a hat to his father and later wrote that he regretted it. By 2020, people with knowledge of his treatment say, the diagnosis was schizophrenia and later schizoaffective disorder, and a court had put a conservator in charge of his medication for a year. After the deaths, Mel Brooks said he was glad Carl Reiner died when he did. Martin Scorsese wrote an essay on Christmas Day. Michele's sister Martine said their lives were changed forever. And in June 2026, a 136-page petition told a probate court that Nick loved his parents and is devastated by their deaths, in a document asking for the trust they signed before his first Christmas. Tony follows the ledger from the first page to the column that never fills. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 3 - His Check-In Was Missing THIS
2026/10/09
Jake Reiner was a television reporter for ten years and walked up on crime scenes all the time. In August 2026 he sat for his first interview about the one at his childhood home, said he hasn't spoken to his brother, and said he will never understand why this happened no matter how it's explained to him. Chapter three of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story goes back to the first morning, 4:15 a.m. at the Pierside hotel in Santa Monica, and to the thing a staffer noticed was missing from the man at the front desk. Late that morning a housekeeper cleaning room 207 found bedsheets hung over the window and blood in the shower, and the guest never checked out. Around one the next morning a Robbery-Homicide detective walked into the lobby and told the front desk he was there for a welfare check on that room. According to a law-enforcement source, he was worried the guest had cleaned up and disposed of evidence, and he taped the room off as a crime scene. By then Nick Reiner had been in custody for hours, picked up at Exposition and Vermont with a red backpack on his shoulder. The chapter ends where the defense begins. Nick's public defender told the court on September 15 that he has a serious mental illness and a long history of self-medicating, and that his circumstances show how hard treatment is to get. Tony puts that next to the record of help brought to Nick Reiner's door eighteen times. He puts it next to Lindsay Clancy, another defendant with a serious mental illness, who sought psychiatric help repeatedly in the weeks before her children died and got days in a hospital bed. The probate fight over $325,017.49 of his grandfather's money closes the ledger, with his lawyers arguing that the slayer statute requires a determination and not a mere accusation. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 2 - Rob Said Nick Was WHERE?!
2026/10/08
By several accounts, Nick Reiner spent Conan O'Brien's holiday party on December 13, 2025, walking up to his parents' friends in a hoodie and asking each of them the same questions. What's your name. What's your last name. Are you famous. His parents had reportedly asked the host's permission to bring him, because they didn't want to leave him alone. Three months earlier, Rob Reiner had told a public radio host where his son was in life, and that answer is the door chapter two of Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story walks through. Chapter two goes back to 2016, when Being Charlie opened to $32,964 worldwide and Nick moved into the guesthouse on a $13.5 million estate with a reported $10,000-a-month allowance. The Dopey podcast is where he described harm reduction as his recovery plan and did an impression of his father. In 2018 he was back on the same show, laughing about punching out the television and a lamp until the guesthouse was wrecked. A Thanksgiving guest remembered air freshener in the billiard room and a household employee ready to quit. The LAPD logs from 2019 record a welfare check and a call coded mental, and the 2020 conservatorship let the state compel Nick's medication for a year before it lapsed. The money he didn't take is in here too: at least $558,000 due from his trust on his thirtieth birthday, by the trustee's later math, left where it was. The chapter ends on December 13, with a disputed argument at the party, a psychiatric hold reportedly suggested and never called, and Rob and Michele driving their son home to the guesthouse a short walk from their bedroom. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nick Reiner: Self-Made Monster Part 1 - Roommate Texted Friends THIS
2026/10/07
On September 14, 2015, Rob Reiner stood on a stage at the Toronto International Film Festival and told the crowd that Being Charlie was very personal. His son Nick, the movie's writer, turned 22 that night and took a bow for the story of how every adult in his life had failed him. Six years before that, a 15-year-old in the next bed at a Malibu rehab had heard a different version, every night, after lights out. When Nick Reiner was arrested in December 2025, that former roommate texted the old friends from the program, and what he wrote them is the first thing Tony puts on the table in Self-Made Monster: The Nick Reiner Story. Danny Svilar's account is the spine of chapter one. He puts the facility at about $60,000 a month. He describes a roommate with no gratitude, a pompous little punk in his words, who went after another kid and once came at him, and parents who were there for every family group. Svilar's own reason for being there was a shopping addiction, and he came out of it running a restaurant in Wyoming. Nick's path ran the other way, and he narrated it himself. An interventionist at 14, then 17 or 18 programs by his early twenties, a wilderness program in Utah, and a first shot of heroin on Skid Row with someone from treatment. Shelters in three states by choice, a stolen bottle of OxyContin from a sick old woman, and a self-description, at 22, as a spoiled white rich kid from a Hollywood family. In 2015 his parents told the Los Angeles Times they should have listened to him instead of the professionals who called him a liar. The professionals never got an apology. Tony builds the ledger for the first 22 years. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nick Reiner's $1.6M Trust Is Blocked Over WHAT?!
2026/09/27
Nick Reiner says a trust created for him in childhood should have paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars before his parents were ever killed. Now that money is tied up in probate court while he faces two murder charges in their deaths, and the fight could shape who represents him at trial.  Rob and Michele Reiner created Nick's individual trust in 1993. His attorneys say its terms required half to be distributed outright at age 30 and the rest at 35. Nick turned 30 on September 14, 2023. He says the first payment - roughly $558,000 - never arrived. Recent filings put the total trust near $1.6 million. His lawyers argue California's slayer statute should not block money that became payable before the alleged killings because this is not an inheritance created by his parents' deaths.  The trustee side has opposed immediate release while questions about the trust, Nick's capacity, and the criminal case remain unresolved. Court records also show former private defense lawyer Alan Jackson received fees from the trust in April, even though Nick says he has not received money for his own commissary account. Jackson has said his firm is willing to return if funding becomes available.  The criminal stakes changed September 15 when District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. Reiner still faces life without parole if convicted as charged, including the grand jury's lying-in-wait allegation. He has pleaded not guilty. His mental-health history may become part of his defense, but no formal insanity plea is publicly established. The trust dispute is scheduled for October 23.  Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nick Reiner Swears His Mother Never Told Him THIS
2026/09/25
Two filings dated September 17 put a number on what Nick Reiner has taken from his $1.6 million trust since his arrest: not even five dollars. His attorneys Anita Wu and Geoffrey Neri say the age-30 distribution of at least $558,000 came due in 2023 while Rob and Michele were alive, and the slayer statute can't reach money that was already his. They add that $325,017 traces to Carl Reiner, who died in 2020, and that the trust document itself is now paying the trustees' lawyers to oppose him. The trustee's answer is where this fight turns. Jodi Pais Montgomery's filing says prior trustee Matthew Fishburn was told by Michele that Nick knew about the money and chose to leave it, which would mean nothing is owed until 2028. Nick's sworn response: to the best of his recollection, no one ever told him. Montgomery also warns that a payout now can't be undone if a jury convicts. Judge Garcia rules after October 23. *What Nick Reiner Faces Now That Death Is Off the Table*
2026/09/18
The death penalty is gone from Nick Reiner's case. DA Nathan Hochman announced the decision after conversations with Jake and Romy Reiner and a review of the case. Sources say Rob and Michele Reiner's lifelong opposition to capital punishment factored into the decision. The parents who spent their final months trying to keep their son stable reportedly didn't believe in the death penalty — even for the person accused of killing them.Maximum sentence is now life without the possibility of parole. But a conviction requires proving Nick was criminally responsible for what he did, and his defense will likely rest on his documented mental illness. He's been diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. A judge found him gravely disabled and placed him under a conservatorship in 2020. Sources say his medications were changed three to four weeks before the murders and he deteriorated rapidly. In California, the defense has to prove insanity — the opposite of Massachusetts, where Lindsay Clancy's jury deadlocked because the prosecution couldn't prove she was sane. California eliminated diminished capacity, so there's no middle ground. And the lying-in-wait allegation says Nick planned this, which directly contradicts any claim that he was too ill to understand what he was doing. After the murders, sources say Nick checked into a hotel where staff found blood in the shower. The insanity defense has to overcome all of it. Nick Reiner’s Record Next to Lindsay Clancy’s Changes the Whole Debate
2026/09/10
Concealment of purpose. Watching and waiting. A surprise attack from a position of advantage. Specific intent to kill. Those are the four elements prosecutors must prove to make the lying-in-wait special circumstance stick against Nick Reiner. Each one describes a mind that is functioning, planning, and choosing — and the prosecution has seventeen years of behavioral evidence to support it. Nick went to rehab 18 times by 22. He chose homelessness over treatment. On a 2018 podcast he laughed while describing how he destroyed his parents’ guest house piece by piece on a drug binge. Sources say he bragged about what he could get away with, threatened his sister, and took his parents’ money for drugs. His parents gave him the same ultimatum for years: stop using or get out. Sources say they threatened to call the police and never did. His medication was changed weeks before the killings, and sources say doctors warned his parents the switch could make his behavior worse. The night before December 14, Nick argued with his father at a holiday party and was asked to leave. The next afternoon, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death. Tony examines every element of the lying-in-wait charge against the record and puts Nick Reiner’s case alongside Lindsay Clancy’s — where a mother followed every instruction her doctors gave and still lost everything. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. Held without bail. Next hearing September 15. Listen Anywhere You Get Podcasts: https://pod.link/1655749292 Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Nick Reiner's Grand Jury Indictment Changes the Death Penalty Math
2026/08/14
The death penalty math in the Nick Reiner case just changed. A grand jury indictment unsealed August 12 adds lying in wait as a second special circumstance to the murder charges. The original filing carried one: multiple murders. Prosecutors now have two. If the DA pursues capital punishment and secures a conviction, the penalty phase starts with two aggravating factors instead of one. If he does not seek death, lying in wait still carries life in prison without the possibility of parole. California has a moratorium on executions, but the statute is active and LWOP sentences are enforced. The indictment alleges Nick Reiner hid his purpose from his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, watched for his opportunity, and attacked them inside their Brentwood bedroom. Under California law, the lying-in-wait special circumstance requires proof of specific intent to kill, not just malice. Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder years before the killings. He was under a conservatorship for grave disability from 2020 to 2021, with a fiduciary making his medical decisions. His medication was changed weeks before December 14, 2025. The prosecution's theory requires a jury to find concealment and planning in a defendant with that history. The grand jury returned the indictment on July 20 and it sat sealed for more than three weeks, bypassing a preliminary hearing that had been on the calendar. Tony explains every piece of the indictment and what it means for the hearings ahead. Nick Reiner denied the charges. He is held without bail. Pretrial is September 15. Nick Reiner Kept Walking Out. Lindsay Clancy Kept Asking.
2026/08/07
Nick Reiner spent seventeen years with help arriving at his door, and by his own account in interviews given long before any of this, he kept leaving it standing there. His own account of it is on the record long before any of this. A December 2015 People interview has him putting his first rehab around age fifteen, with roughly seventeen stays behind him by twenty-two. The Hollywood Reporter has reported that figure as some eighteen. In the LA Times that same year he described refusing to go at all, or checking in and then walking out to live on the street. He framed homelessness as what it cost to do recovery his own way instead of theirs. Somebody carried that. Records reported by Fox affiliates show a yearlong conservatorship, which means a family asked a judge to take legal control of an adult. Court filings say siblings Jake and Romy Reiner initially agreed to fund attorney Alan Jackson and then reversed, and ABC News reports it isn't publicly known why. There is also a complication nobody should skip. According to Variety, trustee Paul Kanin has been unwilling to release trust funds over unresolved concerns about Reiner's capacity to make sound decisions and adequately protect his own interests. A new trustee, Jodi Montgomery, has since been appointed. He is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has pleaded not guilty, and no motive has been officially confirmed. Tony Brueski contrasts all of it with Lindsay Clancy, who went looking for help and was sent home in a day. A Hidden Killers investigation. The petition itself includes a line worth reading exactly as written. It says Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths. That sits in the court record alongside a request for the money those same parents set aside for him. Holding both of those at once is closer to the truth of this case than picking whichever one fits an argument better. Nick Reiner Turned Down The Help Lindsay Clancy Chased
2026/08/07
Nick Reiner had help brought to him for seventeen years and kept walking out of it. Lindsay Clancy went looking for help and couldn't get anybody to keep her more than a day. Same three words on both files. His father directed a movie about it. Nick co-wrote the film, it premiered at a festival with the two of them sitting there, and he told NPR that making it was part of his recovery. He said people who go through addictions of all kinds are kind of hard to love. Then a petition from a jail cell. Court filings show Reiner asked a judge to release the trust his parents created for him, reported at more than one and a half million dollars by Variety and NBC and at one point seven million by Rolling Stone. He wanted it to re-hire attorney Alan Jackson and to buy basic support items at the commissary. On the other coast, Clancy and her ex-husband Patrick both filed lawsuits accusing her medical providers of failing to properly diagnose and treat her condition. There are named parties. There are signatures on a discharge. He has pleaded not guilty and no motive has ever been officially confirmed. Her jury has not returned a verdict. Tony Brueski explains why treating these two as one story is how every person who made a decision in either of them stays anonymous. A Hidden Killers investigation. Underneath both cases is a condition experts covering the Clancy trial put at roughly one to two women out of every thousand who give birth. Rare enough that most clinicians aren't looking for it. Common enough to happen thousands of times a year in this country. That combination is how something stays misunderstood for decades, and why the conversation about it keeps getting merged with a case that has nothing to do with it. Nick Reiner: The Fight Nobody Stopped In Time
2026/07/14
Nine months after Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home, this episode goes deeper into the detail that's stuck with Hidden Killers listeners more than any other: the fight at the party hours before it happened. According to reporting, Nick Reiner and his father argued at a holiday gathering the night before the killings. Guests reportedly noticed his disheveled appearance and erratic behavior. Everyone went home. Tony Brueski and the team trace Nick's reported history of violent outbursts back to childhood, the addiction struggles he spoke about publicly for years, and the ways compassionate, engaged parents can still end up unable to hold a firm boundary with a child they love. This episode also walks through where the case stands legally. Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder with special circumstances. His defense team has changed once already, the case has moved through nine months of continuances, and both sides are now working through an enormous volume of evidence ahead of a preliminary hearing set for September. The show addresses the insanity defense already being discussed publicly, and why California's legal standard for it succeeds in under one percent of cases, even ones involving a documented mental health history. There's also a closer look at what the Reiner family's surviving children have said publicly since the killings, and what it means to grieve two parents while also watching a sibling face the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty. For everyone following this case closely, this episode covers what's confirmed, what's still speculation, and what comes next. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? How Do The Reiner Siblings Live With An Ending That Never Comes?
2026/07/11
Romy Reiner walked into her parents' home because they weren't answering the door, found her father, and called for help — only to learn the suspect was her own brother. This look back stays with her, with Jake, and with Tracy: the three people who have to keep living after the worst day of their lives. They woke up that December morning with parents and went to bed orphans. They now carry something almost no family ever holds at once — they're the ones who lost the most, the next of kin with a legal voice in the case, and the family of the man accused of doing it. Sources say they've cut Nick off completely. Sources say they don't want him to face the ultimate punishment. We revisit where things stood at the time of our reporting, but the real subject of this segment is everything that comes after the verdict. Because here's the hard part: whatever the court decides, their parents are still gone. A conviction won't change that. A finding of not responsible by reason of mental illness won't either. So much of grief becomes waiting — for the apology, for the ruling, for the moment that finally makes it make sense. This segment is a gentle, honest argument that the moment may never arrive, and that the people who find their way through aren't the ones who got closure handed to them. They're the ones who decided to stop letting the chaos write the rest of their story. Jake, Romy, and Tracy will have to learn how to be a family without the two people who made them one. This is for everyone who's had to do the same. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Is Nick Reiner Really Writing A Book To Hurt His Own Siblings?
2026/07/07
Jake Reiner said he'd trade every Dodger game and every Broadway show for one more hour with his parents. That's the grief Jake, Romy, and Tracy are living inside — and now, according to tabloid reports, the brother accused of taking everything from them may be planning to make it worse. This look back sits with two hard threads. The first is the wait. Months after Rob and Michele were found in their home, the case still hadn't reached a preliminary hearing — the autopsies weren't finished, and the whole thing got pushed to the fall. Criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis breaks down what that delay signals and whether a mental health defense was always coming, given Nick's documented history. For a family already shattered, every postponed date is another stretch of limbo. The second thread is darker. Reports across several outlets claim Nick is allegedly writing a tell-all from his cell — not a confession, but reportedly an attempt to settle scores with the siblings who cut him off. Retired FBI behavioral chief Robin Dreeke unpacks the contradiction: a man described in reports as almost childlike behind bars, allegedly plotting at the same time to humiliate the people who once tried to save his life. We treat the tell-all claims as the unverified reporting they are, work through the questions you've been sending, and revisit where things stood at the time of our reporting. The question no one can answer yet: whose idea is this really? How Do You Stop Loving A Brother Who Took Everything?
2026/07/06
Jake and Romy Reiner lost both parents in a single day — and the person accused of taking them was their own brother. This look back sits with the moment they finally stepped away, and the long, exhausting road that led there. For years, the family absorbed everything: repeated treatment programs, a conservatorship, crisis after crisis. Then their parents were gone, and the two surviving siblings made a quiet, devastating choice. Sources close to the family say Nick's defense is his own and they're not part of it. The attorney they initially funded withdrew. Reports say they won't be at the trial. In months behind bars, sources say his only visitor has been his lawyer. We revisit where things stood at the time of our reporting — but the heart of this segment is what it takes to let go of someone you're supposed to love no matter what. To understand it, we look at three families who reached the same place. A father who walked away from his son and admitted he wished he'd never been born. A family that disappeared from public view rather than speak for the relative who'd done the unthinkable. And a daughter who had to bury the father she adored and the killer he secretly was at the same time. The question this segment asks isn't whether Jake and Romy were right to step back. It's what it cost them to hold on for as long as they did — and what the families who finally stopped can teach the rest of us about survival. #NickReiner #JakeRomyReiner #RobReiner #MicheleReiner #TrueCrime #FamilyTragedy #Boundaries #LettingGo #PeterLanza #TheReinerCase

Horrible
Finds one piece of information, talks about it for 20 minutes with nothing except his opinion and a lot of deep breathing

Tone makes the content less serious- and it should be a serious story
Somewhat repetitive but provides up to date info for those following the case. I don’t like the breathless sensationalistic tone.

This is as good an ongoing conversation about the case as you can find anywhere. I do wish the host would stop flinging the F bomb around so gratuitou...

Hit the nail on the head about rehabs
You should look into advocacy for insurance reform regarding drug rehabs, recovery centers.

No new information; opinion-based
Repeatedly say they’re not blaming the parents, but continue to blame parents. Maybe they should listen to their own Podcast.

Insufferable ads
The content is interesting, but you spend most of the time listening to the same ads over & over🤦🏻‍♀️

Reckless
Essentially, long reckless rants by a host who does not seem to have an appropriate knowledge base or sensitivity for the subjects covered.
