Before it Goes Wrong- Look Twice Volume 3 with Tim Beard
2026/10/03
LOOK TWICE — VOLUME 3: BEFORE IT GOES WRONG | TIM BEARD
The best time to think about danger isn't after something happens. It's before it goes wrong.
Tim Beard returns for Volume 3 of our LOOK TWICE series for another conversation about personal safety, awareness, prevention, and the small decisions we make every day that can have enormous consequences.
This time, the focus shifts toward recognizing problems before they become emergencies.
How often do we move through our daily lives on autopilot? How much do we really notice about our surroundings? And could simply slowing down, looking twice, and thinking one step ahead prevent an accident—or something far worse?
Tim joins Tim and Eli to discuss situational awareness, preparation, everyday risks, and why prevention often begins with something incredibly simple: paying attention.
This isn't about living your life afraid of what might happen.
It's about recognizing what could happen before it goes wrong.
Welcome to LOOK TWICE — Volume 3.

Ciphered Past Episode 90- The Loose Thread with Jeff Kaye
2026/09/29
THE LOOSE THREAD | Jeffrey Kaye | Ciphered Past Episode 90
Jeffrey Kaye returns to Ciphered Past for a wide-ranging second conversation that follows some of the lesser-explored threads surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Beginning with a broader discussion about government secrecy, censorship, war, and the limits of transparency, Jeffrey takes us into his continuing research on military intelligence and the events surrounding November 22, 1963.
At the center of the conversation is an intriguing and often overlooked trail involving the 112th Military Intelligence Group, San Antonio, Lackland Air Force Base, anti-Castro Cuban personnel, and military training programs operating during the critical months of 1963.
Jeffrey discusses documents concerning Cuban veterans of Brigade 2506, Victor Krulak, military intelligence activity in Texas, and the relationship between military intelligence and CIA operations. The discussion also turns to Lee Harvey Oswald: his defection to the Soviet Union, Helsinki, intelligence tradecraft, his missing military intelligence file, Mexico City, alleged impersonation, and the unanswered question of what role Oswald may actually have been playing.
Later, Jeffrey connects these questions to the larger history of secret military operations, Cold War secrecy, Cuba, and a 1963 military planning document that he believes deserves considerably more scrutiny.
Sometimes the smallest detail leads somewhere unexpected.
Sometimes all you have to do is pull The Loose Thread.

Look Twice Volume 2- When Normal goes wrong with Tim Beard
2026/09/26
What happens when an ordinary day suddenly stops being ordinary?
In Volume 2 of our Look Twice series, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome back author and former CIA officer Tim Beard for a practical conversation about recognizing risk, preparing for emergencies, protecting your digital life, and making better decisions when something goes wrong.
This time, the discussion moves into situations many of us could actually encounter: road rage, phone security, suspicious emails and texts, social-media exposure, scams targeting families and older adults, travel safety, natural disasters, power and communications failures, and emergency preparedness.
Tim explains why preparation doesn't mean living in fear. His recurring message is much simpler: understand what is normal, recognize when something has changed, slow down when someone is pressuring you, and think through problems before you're forced to make decisions under stress.
We also discuss what happens when technology we normally take for granted stops working. Should you keep emergency cash? What happens when cellular service disappears? How should you prepare for an earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or extended power outage? And when does reasonable preparation cross the line into over-preparing?
Later, Tim answers listener questions about public transportation and family safety before giving us a preview of Look Twice: Volume 3, where the conversation will move into more immediate dangers, civil unrest, medical preparedness, self-defense considerations, and overseas travel and living.
About Tim Beard:Tim Beard has more than three decades of experience in the public and private sectors. He served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer and was recruited into the CIA's Directorate of Operations, where he conducted and managed sensitive clandestine operations overseas.

Look Twice: The Safety Briefing Volume 1 with Tim Beard
2026/09/24
THE SAFETY BRIEFING with Tim Beard | Look Twice — Part One
Welcome to a new kind of conversation.
In this first installment of The Safety Briefing, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame sit down with author, former United States Marine Corps infantry officer, and retired CIA officer Tim Beard to discuss his book series, Look Twice: Your Guide to Staying Safe in an Unsafe World.
This isn't a conversation about secret operations or classified intelligence.
It's about you, your family, and the everyday decisions that can help keep the people you care about safe.
Drawing from more than three decades of experience, Beard explains how ordinary people can develop greater situational awareness without living in fear or becoming paranoid.
What does it actually mean to “look twice”?
How much awareness do we surrender when we're staring at our phones or wearing earbuds in public? How can we recognize when something simply doesn't fit our environment? And perhaps most importantly, how can we avoid dangerous situations before they ever become confrontations?
Beard introduces several concepts from the Look Twice mindset, including his Traffic Light System, identifying Hard Points, understanding the difference between what is possible and what is probable, establishing a baseline for familiar environments, and learning how to get off the X when something goes wrong.
The conversation also moves inside the home.
Beard discusses practical home-security habits, apartments and condominiums versus single-family homes, lighting, locks, alarms, windows, garages, family emergency plans, and why expensive technology means very little if it isn't backed by disciplined everyday habits.
We also discuss one of the most difficult questions for parents:
How do we teach our children to protect themselves without teaching them to be afraid of the world?
Beard explains why trust should be earned, how conversations about personal safety should change as children grow older, and why families should think through emergencies before they happen.
Finally, Beard explains what adrenaline can do to the body during a crisis, why people sometimes freeze, and why planning ahead can give your mind somewhere to go when seconds matter.

Ciphered Past Episode 89- The Same Monster with Jackson R. Brooks
2026/09/23
Episode 89 — The Same Monster | Jackson Brooks
In Episode 89 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome researcher and writer Jackson R. Brooks for a wide-ranging roundtable discussion examining the JFK assassination and the larger world of covert operations surrounding it.
Jackson explains how his research began outside the Kennedy assassination itself. While studying covert operations, Cold War history, intelligence agencies, drug trafficking and figures such as Ted Shackley and David Morales, he began encountering the same names, institutions and methods across seemingly separate chapters of American history.
That realization led him to a provocative way of looking at these events:
“It’s the same monster.”
From Guatemala and the Bay of Pigs to Vietnam, the CIA, organized crime, military intelligence and the Kennedy assassination, this conversation asks whether understanding November 22, 1963 requires looking beyond Dealey Plaza and examining the larger systems operating during the Cold War.
Jackson discusses his ongoing research into legendary CIA officer David Atlee Morales, including his largely unexplored postwar period in Germany and the questions surrounding how Morales developed the skills that would eventually make him an important figure in covert operations.
The conversation also explores Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, James Angleton, Frank Wisner, David Atlee Phillips, the Dulles brothers and United Fruit, the Bay of Pigs, Lee Harvey Oswald, the Warren Commission, institutional secrecy, and the difficulty of separating documented history from interpretation when researching intelligence operations.
Later, Jackson offers the perspective of a younger generation of researchers. Why are younger people increasingly skeptical of official narratives? Has access to enormous amounts of information made historical research easier—or simply made it harder to distinguish evidence from misinformation?
Finally, Jackson previews his upcoming project on David Morales, “The Spy from the Barrio,” and explains why he believes Morales’s early years in postwar Germany may be critical to understanding the intelligence officer he later became.

Ciphered Past Episode 88- The Talking Bone with Rene Denfeld
2026/09/20
Episode 88 — The Talking Bone | Rene Denfeld
In Episode 88 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome internationally acclaimed author, journalist, and licensed investigator Rene Denfeld, author of The Talking Bone, The Enchanted, The Child Finder, The Butterfly Girl, and Sleeping Giants.
For nearly two decades, Rene has worked in the world of criminal investigation, including cases involving wrongful convictions, exonerations, missing persons, trafficking victims, and some of society's most vulnerable people.
Her latest novel, The Talking Bone, draws upon those experiences through the story of investigator Ruby Spencer, known as “The Exonerator.” But behind the thriller is a much larger question: What happens when the evidence of the past begins to speak—and are we willing to listen to what it tells us?
Rene explains the inspiration behind the haunting title and discusses how bones can “talk” through DNA, archaeology, history, and the evidence left behind by people who can no longer speak for themselves.
The conversation then goes far beyond fiction.
Rene takes us inside the reality of wrongful-conviction investigations, explaining how confirmation bias can take hold once authorities identify a suspect, why defendants often have attorneys but no independent investigator, and why being willing to discover that your own assumptions are wrong may be one of an investigator's greatest strengths.
We also explore the forgotten side of missing-person investigations: why some disappearances receive enormous attention while others barely register, how assumptions about runaways can cost investigators precious time, and why the first hours and days after someone disappears can be so important.
Rene also discusses eyewitness memory, false memories, trauma, interviewing witnesses, visiting crime scenes, DNA and genetic genealogy, the limitations of technology, and why even in the modern era much investigative work still comes down to old-fashioned shoe leather.

Ciphered Past Episode 87- Harvey & Lee with David Josephs
2026/09/19
EPISODE 87 — HARVEY AND LEE | DAVID JOSEPHS
What if the history we know of Lee Harvey Oswald is actually the history of two different men?
In Episode 87 of Ciphered Past, researcher David Josephs returns for his fifth appearance on the show to begin Part One of our examination of one of the most controversial and complicated areas of JFK assassination research: Harvey and Lee.
Based on the extensive research of John Armstrong—and David Josephs' years spent examining Armstrong's sources, records and supporting documentation—this episode begins at the foundation. Rather than starting in Dealey Plaza, we travel backward through Oswald's history and examine the documentary conflicts that proponents of the Harvey and Lee theory believe point toward two separate individuals whose histories were eventually merged into one.
This is Part One of our Harvey and Lee series with David Josephs.

Ciphered Past Episode 86- The Imponderables with Dr. Peter C. Grace
2026/09/17
In Episode 86 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome author and researcher Peter C. Grace, author of The Intelligence Intellectuals: Social Scientists and the Making of the CIA, for a fascinating examination of the intellectual foundations of American intelligence during the early Cold War.
Grace takes us back to a period when the newly created CIA was struggling to understand exactly what intelligence analysis should be.
Following major intelligence failures involving the Soviet atomic bomb, the communist victory in China, and the outbreak of the Korean War, CIA leadership sought a fundamentally different approach. Under Director of Central Intelligence Walter Bedell Smith, academics and social scientists including William Langer, Sherman Kent, and Max Millikan were brought into the intelligence world.
Their challenge was extraordinary: transform incomplete information into assessments that American policymakers could actually use.
Peter discusses the development of National Intelligence Estimates, the difficulty of separating Soviet intentions from capabilities, the limitations of ideology as a predictive tool, and the emergence of scenario-building and estimative probability.

Ciphered Past Episode 85- More Than Meets The Eye with Brian Edwards
2026/09/15
Some of the most intriguing pieces of the JFK assassination story aren't necessarily the famous ones. They're the strange witness accounts, overlooked interviews, unexplained observations, and photographic details that remain buried in the historical record.
In Episode 85 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome researcher, author, former law-enforcement officer, and returning guest Brian Edwards for a deep examination of several lesser-known mysteries surrounding November 22, 1963.
Brian begins with the remarkable accounts of WFAA cameraman Malcolm Couch and Dallas Morning News employee Jerry Coley—two men who separately reported encountering unexplained blood or bloody material in different areas of Dealey Plaza shortly after President Kennedy was shot.
The discussion then turns to overlooked testimony connected to employees of the Dal-Tex Building, including Mary Frances Hall, who described unidentified men asking about the presidential motorcade route the day before the assassination. Hall also reported seeing an Honest Joe's Pawn Shop station wagon near the Texas School Book Depository on November 22 and a man carrying a long package toward the building's loading area.
Brian recounts an interview involving military collector Jason Weigler, who claimed that years after the assassination he encountered a mysterious man carrying a briefcase containing photographs allegedly depicting Lee Harvey Oswald and Marina Oswald in formal attire at what appeared to be a White House function. The photographs themselves are not presented in this episode, making Weigler's account an unresolved and extraordinary allegation rather than an established historical fact.
Finally, Brian examines several famous images from Dealey Plaza, raising questions about positioning, shadows, highway signs, perspective, the Altgens photographs, the Willis photograph, and how photographic evidence should be evaluated alongside eyewitness testimony.

Ciphered Past Episode 84: In Real Time with Steve Cameron
2026/09/12
Ciphered Past — Episode 84: In Real Time | Steve Cameron
Steve Cameron returns to Ciphered Past for an investigation that is unfolding in real time.
Joining Tim Gardner and Eli Frame, Cameron presents his continuing research into the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the criminal case against Tyler Robinson, who has pleaded not guilty.
One year after the assassination, Steve takes Tim, Eli, and the audience through surveillance footage, satellite imagery, vehicle movements, rooftop video, the alleged murder weapon, the timeline presented by prosecutors, and other material that he believes raises serious unanswered questions about the case against Robinson.
Among the evidence examined is surveillance footage containing an apparent 1-minute-and-16-second gap, footage of an unidentified individual moving across and descending from a rooftop, questions surrounding the identification of that individual, multiple white SUVs appearing in surveillance material, a Dodge Challenger captured after the assassination, and aerial imagery Steve believes deserves further investigation.
The discussion also examines Lance Twiggs, Robinson's legal defense, the preliminary-hearing evidence, the physical dimensions and configuration of the rifle attributed to Robinson, and newly circulated imagery that Steve says researchers continue to analyze.
Throughout the episode, Cameron distinguishes between what is visible in the available material and his own theories about what that evidence could mean.
.
This is an active criminal case. Tyler Robinson has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Nothing presented in this episode should be interpreted as a determination of guilt or innocence. Ciphered Past encourages viewers to examine the available evidence, distinguish documented facts from interpretation and speculation, and reach their own conclusions.

Ciphered Past Episode 83- The Inevitable Trap with Charles Goyette
2026/09/11
Ciphered Past — Episode 83: The Inevitable Trap | Charles Goyette
New York Times bestselling author, commentator, and longtime broadcaster Charles Goyette returns to Ciphered Past for a wide-ranging conversation with Tim Gardner and Eli Frame about what he sees as a nation approaching an economic, political, and institutional reckoning.
Drawing from themes explored in his book Empire of Lies: Fragments from the Memory Hole, Goyette examines the relationship between American military power, the national debt, the global role of the dollar, foreign intervention, and what he describes as “imperial overstretch.”
But the conversation goes far beyond economics.
Tim, Eli, and Charles discuss the erosion of trust in mainstream media, the legacy of the JFK assassination, Vietnam and Iraq, government investigations, the national-security state, political tribalism, entitlement and generational debt, Social Security, inflation, the banking system, the consequences of the war with Iran, rising energy and food costs, and the possibility that several long-developing problems are beginning to converge at the same moment.
Is America caught in an inevitable trap—where attempts to preserve an unsustainable system ultimately accelerate the very crisis they are intended to prevent?
And if a reckoning is coming, could something constructive emerge from it?
In the closing moments of the episode, Charles discusses the importance of national self-knowledge and understanding what has been concealed or forgotten about our history. He also offers some powerful words about the work being done by Ciphered Past and independent researchers searching for answers.

Ciphered Past Episode 82: The Power of the People with John O'Loughlin

Episode 82 — The Power of the People | John O’Loughlin
John O’Loughlin returns to Ciphered Past for a wide-ranging conversation about the JFK assassination, government secrecy, intelligence operations, the erosion of public trust, and the enduring power of ordinary citizens to question the narratives presented to them.
Tim and John begin with the reported discovery of FBI “burn bags” containing JFK-related material and discuss whether newly surfaced evidence should be accepted at face value or approached with skepticism. From there, the conversation examines Lee Harvey Oswald, the continuing debate surrounding his intelligence connections, the value of expert testimony, and how the case against Oswald might be viewed if it were examined today.
The discussion then expands far beyond Dallas.
John draws upon his background as an attorney to discuss how expert testimony could help preserve decades of JFK research for future generations. Tim and John also examine the media, surveillance, privacy, technology, institutional power, and the importance of maintaining a healthy skepticism toward authority.
In the second half, John takes us deep inside one of the lesser-known areas of Cold War history: SACSA — the Special Assistant for Counterinsurgency and Special Activities.
John explains his research into SACSA, the highly secretive Pentagon office where his father, Thomas F. O’Loughlin Jr., worked. The conversation explores counterinsurgency, covert operations, Vietnam, the Son Tay raid, Operation Popeye, the CIA, alleged narcotics activity in Southeast Asia, and John's continuing effort to understand his father's work and the institution in which he served.
Ultimately, Episode 82 becomes a conversation about something larger than any single assassination or intelligence agency: the responsibility of citizens to study history, challenge assumptions, preserve evidence, and refuse to surrender their voice.
The power of the people begins with the willingness to ask questions.

Ciphered Past Episode 81- The Imposters with Scott Reid
2026/08/25
What if the strange trail of Lee Harvey Oswald imposters began years before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy?
In Episode 81 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome researcher and writer Scott Reid back to the show for a fascinating investigation into one of the lesser-known mysteries surrounding Lee Harvey Oswald: the account of Louise Steenbarger.
In 1978, Steenbarger contacted the House Select Committee on Assassinations and described an extraordinary encounter from October 1959. While traveling aboard a Military Air Transport Service flight from the United States to Europe, she claimed she sat beside a young Marine who identified himself as Lee Oswald.
The problem?
The documented Lee Harvey Oswald was supposedly traveling to Europe by an entirely different route.
Scott takes us inside his research into the Steenbarger account, including surviving flight records from Prestwick Airport, MATS routes through McGuire Air Force Base and Stephenville, and new evidence that may narrow Steenbarger's journey to October 10, 1959—the very day Oswald's documented European journey places him traveling from London toward Helsinki.
From there, the conversation expands into the larger mystery surrounding Oswald's identity.
Was Steenbarger simply mistaken? Did she actually encounter Lee Harvey Oswald? Or was someone deliberately traveling under the Oswald identity?
Tim, Eli, and Scott examine the mysterious journey into Finland, the missing hours in London, conflicting descriptions aboard the Marion Lykes, Billy Joe Lord's later concerns about the JFK assassination, the Bolton Ford incident, J. Edgar Hoover's concerns about someone using Oswald's identity, and the recurring reports of apparent Oswald imposters before November 1963.
How early did the Oswald impersonation phenomenon begin—and what was its original purpose?

Ciphered Past Episode 80- The Helsinski Corridor with Bart Kamp
2026/08/22
Episode 80 — The Helsinki Corridor | Bart Kamp
In Episode 80 of Ciphered Past, Tim Gardner and Eli Frame welcome back researcher and author Bart Kamp for a deep examination of one of the lesser-discussed chapters in Lee Harvey Oswald's life: his mysterious journey through Helsinki, Finland, in October 1959.
Drawing from his newly released illustrated paper, The Helsinki Corridor, and the much larger book project now growing from that research, Kamp reconstructs Oswald's brief stay in Finland and places it against the extraordinary Cold War intelligence environment operating in Helsinki at the time.
How did a 19-year-old former Marine arrive in Helsinki, stay at one of the city's premier hotels, obtain a Soviet visa with remarkable speed, and depart for the USSR only days later?
Bart discusses the surviving hotel and registration records, Oswald's finances, his unexplained move from the Hotel Torni to the Klaus Kurki, and the unusual lack of photographs, diary entries, or other documentation describing what Oswald actually did during those days.
Central to the investigation is Soviet Vice Consul Gregory Golub, who had authority to expedite certain Soviet visas without first obtaining approval from Moscow. Kamp examines Golub's activities in Helsinki, his contacts within the Cold War intelligence environment, and CIA operational records that provide a remarkable glimpse into relationships between American and Soviet personnel.
