Irrevocable Trusts for Doctors - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/10/06
Do doctors really need an irrevocable trust? In this episode we discuss how irrevocable trusts work and the reasons why a high income professional might want (or need) to set one up. Irrevocable trusts can be a useful estate planning and asset protection tool, but using them will increase the complexity of your financial life. We discuss the pros and cons of using an irrevocable trust, when it might make sense for you, and the different types of trusts you can use. An irrevocable trust is not something that every doctor needs, but understanding what they are and how they work will help you determine if their added complexity outweighs their benefit in your life. What Doctors Need to Know About Term Life Insurance - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/09/29
How much term life insurance do you actually need, and is there a simple way to calculate it yourself? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down term life insurance using a straightforward formula: add up what your family would need if you were gone, subtract what you already have saved, and that gap is your coverage number. He walks through a real example covering college costs, a mortgage payoff, and full financial independence for a surviving spouse, showing how a $2 to 5 million policy, typical for most attending physicians, actually gets calculated rather than guessed. Jim also covers how to choose the right term length based on when you expect to reach financial independence, the difference between level premium and annually renewable term policies, and why term life insurance functions largely as a commodity, price and financial strength matter, but most add-ons and riders, like return of premium features, are not worth paying extra for. He addresses how dual income couples should think about coverage, and explains why term life insurance is meant to be temporary: once you are financially independent enough that no one depends on your income, it is time to cancel the policy and redirect that money elsewhere. The right amount of life insurance is not about following a rule of thumb. It is about doing the math for your specific situation, and insuring adequately to cover your needs. We know finances can be complicated, especially when you are just beginning your journey to financial literacy. What Doctors Need to Know About Traditional IRAs - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/09/22
Does using a traditional IRA before age 59.5 automatically mean paying a penalty on your money? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down how traditional IRAs work, from the upfront tax deduction and tax-protected growth to the asset protection benefits most people overlook. He explains the key difference between traditional and Roth IRAs, why the decision between them is one of the more difficult choices in personal finance, and how high earners with a workplace retirement plan often lose the ability to deduct traditional IRA contributions, which is exactly why the backdoor Roth IRA process exists. Jim also covers the lesser-known exceptions that allow penalty-free withdrawals before age 59.5, including the 72(t) substantially equal periodic payment rule, which means early retirement is not a reason to avoid using retirement accounts in the first place. He closes with the most common mistakes people make with traditional IRAs, from failing to use them at all to mishandling the backdoor Roth conversion process due to the pro-rata rule. A traditional IRA, used correctly, almost always beats investing the same money in a regular taxable brokerage account. We know finances can be complicated, especially when you are just beginning your journey to financial literacy. When you listen to the Financial Boot Camp Podcast, you'll learn the basics of money: how to earn more of it, how to save more of it, how and why to invest more of it, and yes, how to safely spend more of it. Stop Budgeting, Start Tracking Your Expenses - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/09/15
Could your retirement plan be off by hundreds of thousands of dollars simply because you do not actually know what you spend each month? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Cole Anderson, CFP®, CSLP with White Coat Planning explains why expense tracking matters more than traditional budgeting. Budgeting tends to create a restrictive, scarcity-driven mindset, while tracking expenses builds a clearer, more accurate picture of where money is actually going. Using a simple example, a couple who believes they spend $10,000 a month but actually spends $15,000, he shows how a spending gap that size can increase a retirement number by 50 percent, from $3 million to $4.5 million. Cole breaks down the three categories of expenses, fixed, variable, and episodic, and walks through practical ways to track spending, whether that means manually reviewing bank and credit card statements or using tools like Monarch Money or You Need a Budget. He also shares how tracking expenses over time reveals forgotten subscriptions and spending patterns that do not match a household's actual values, and explains the surprisingly large long-term impact of even small monthly reductions in spending. Accurate spending data is not just a nice-to-have. It is the foundation every other part of a financial plan, from emergency funds to insurance coverage to retirement timing, actually depends on. Is Charitable Giving Actually a Good Tax Strategy? - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/09/08
Is giving to charity actually a smart tax strategy, or does the math not work the way most people assume? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down the real relationship between charitable giving and taxes. He explains why giving money away purely to save on taxes never makes financial sense on its own, but also shares data suggesting that people who give tend to build more wealth over time, likely tied to mindset and behavior rather than the tax deduction itself. Jim then walks through the specific tax rules worth understanding once you've decided to give: the $1,000 to $2,000 deduction available without itemizing, how recent changes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act affect deductions for high earners, and why donating appreciated shares instead of cash can eliminate capital gains taxes entirely. He also covers qualified charitable distributions for those 70.5 and older, one of the most tax efficient ways to give available, and common mistakes people make, including giving enough to feel generous but not enough to actually benefit from itemizing. The bottom line: give because you want to, not for the tax break, but once you've decided to give, make sure you understand how to do it efficiently. The Estate Planning Decisions That Actually Matter - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/09/01
Do you actually need a trust, or is a will enough to protect your family? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down the three core purposes of estate planning: directing where your assets and minor children go, minimizing or avoiding the probate process, and reducing taxes tied to your death. He explains the difference between revocable and irrevocable trusts, when beneficiary designations can pass assets outside of probate, and why most Americans will never owe federal estate taxes given the current exemption of $30 million for married couples, though state-level exemptions can be dramatically lower in places like Oregon and Washington. Jim emphasizes that estate planning isn't really about the documents themselves, it's about the decisions behind them: who will raise your children, when and how your money should reach your heirs, and what medical care you would or wouldn't want if you couldn't speak for yourself. He also covers when advanced techniques like family limited partnerships or domestic asset protection trusts might be worth considering, and why sharing your wishes with loved ones matters just as much as writing them down. The core message: good estate planning isn't about complexity for its own sake. It's about making the hardest decisions in advance so the people you love don't have to guess. Is Your Group Disability Policy Good Enough? - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/08/25
Is your group disability insurance actually good enough, or is the lower price hiding a much weaker policy? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down the real differences between group and individual disability insurance. He explains why group policies often come with a weaker definition of disability, one that can make it harder to get paid for conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, or depression, and how benefit offsets, lack of portability, and missing cost of living adjustments can all quietly reduce the real value of a cheaper group policy. Jim also covers the tax differences between the two, why group policy benefits are typically taxable while individually purchased benefits generally are not, and why individual policyholders tend to have stronger legal standing if a claim gets disputed. He shares his own experience carrying a group policy for part of his career specifically because it didn't exclude one of his more dangerous hobbies, and explains the situations where a group policy still makes sense, including convenience, no medical underwriting, and employer tax benefits. The takeaway isn't that one type of policy is always better. It's understanding exactly what you're trading away for a lower premium, and deciding if that tradeoff actually fits your situation. Investment Glide Paths: How Much Risk Should You Take? - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/08/18
Should your portfolio become more conservative as you get closer to retirement? And how should your asset allocation change once you actually retire? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, we break down investment glide paths and how your mix of stocks, bonds, and other investments can change throughout your career and retirement. A traditional glide path gradually reduces investment risk as retirement approaches. Someone might begin with 80%, 90%, or even 100% stocks early in their career and gradually shift toward a more conservative portfolio. The reason is largely to reduce sequence of returns risk, which can be especially damaging when a portfolio suffers large losses just before or after retirement while you're also withdrawing money. We also look at the alternative view that investors may eventually need to take more risk later in retirement to maintain portfolio growth and protect against inflation. Target-date retirement funds provide one simple way to implement a glide path, but different providers don't necessarily agree on how quickly an investor should become more conservative. The right answer depends on your individual need, ability, and desire to take risk. Your written investing plan should address not only your current asset allocation, but how that allocation will change over time. There isn't one perfect glide path for every investor. The important thing is to make a deliberate decision about how much risk you're willing and able to take before market volatility forces you to make the decision for you. Whole Life Insurance: What Doctors Need to Know - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/08/11
Do doctors actually need whole life insurance, or are they being sold an expensive financial product they don't need? Whole life insurance is a form of permanent life insurance that provides a death benefit for life, unlike term life insurance, which only pays if you die during the policy term. The tradeoff is cost. Permanent life insurance can cost many times more than comparable term coverage. In this Financial Bootcamp episode, we break down how whole life insurance works, why most doctors primarily need term life insurance during their working years, and what happens to the cash value inside a whole life policy. We also look at the tax treatment of policy withdrawals, borrowing against cash value, non-direct recognition policies, and why the investment returns on many whole life policies can be disappointing during the early years. Some policies may take 15 or 20 years to break even, creating a significant opportunity cost compared with other investments. That doesn't mean whole life insurance is never appropriate. There are legitimate uses involving estate planning, business succession, and certain specialized financial strategies. The question is whether you actually have one of those needs. Before buying whole life insurance, understand what you're purchasing, how the policy works, and what else you could do with the money. For most doctors, there are likely better places to put those dollars first. Fixed vs. Variable Rate Loans: Which Should You Choose? - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/08/04
Should you choose a fixed interest rate loan for the certainty, or a variable rate loan for the potential savings? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down the real tradeoffs between fixed and variable rate loans, and how to decide which one fits your situation. He explains how fixed rates protect you from interest rate risk at a cost, while variable rates typically start lower but expose you to the possibility of rising payments over time. Jim walks through how to evaluate the worst case scenario on a variable rate loan, including rate caps and adjustment limits, and why that worst case, not the starting rate, should drive your decision. He applies this framework across student loans, mortgages, and car loans, and explains why fixed rates tend to make more sense for long-term obligations like a 30-year mortgage, while variable rates and adjustable rate mortgages can make sense if you know you won't hold the loan for long. He also revisits 2022, when interest rates rose about 4% in roughly six months, one of the fastest rate increases in U.S. history, and what happened to borrowers and investors who had taken on too much variable rate risk without planning for it. The right loan structure isn't about picking whichever one has a better reputation. It's about understanding the real cost, running the worst case scenario, and matching the loan to your own financial plan and risk tolerance. How to Choose the Right Asset Allocation - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/07/28
What actually drives your investment returns, the stocks you pick, or the mix you choose? In this episode of the WCI Financial Bootcamp Podcast, we break down asset allocation, the decision that studies show accounts for 80 to 90 percent of your portfolio's returns. You'll learn the difference between tactical and static allocation, and why chasing the market usually backfires. We walk through how to determine your real asset allocation using three factors: your need to take risk, your ability to take risk, and your willingness to take risk, with real examples showing how two people with identical goals can need very different portfolios. From there, we cover the core building blocks of any portfolio, stocks for growth, bonds for stability, and how many asset classes you actually need (hint: somewhere between three and ten, not more). We also dig into diversification, why concentrated bets in a single stock or property are how financial tragedies happen, and why the biggest threat to your plan isn't the market. It's you. Performance chasing, panic selling, and FOMO do more damage to portfolios than any recession. There's no such thing as a perfect portfolio. There's only a reasonable one you can stick with, funded consistently, rebalanced occasionally, and left alone. How to Know If Refinancing Is Actually Worth It - WCI Financial Boot Camp
2026/07/21
Can refinancing your mortgage save you money, or cost you more than you realize? In this Financial Bootcamp episode, we break down how to decide whether refinancing your mortgage is actually worth it. While a lower interest rate often sounds like an easy win, the real decision depends on closing costs, how long you plan to stay in your home, and whether you're improving your overall financial position. You'll learn when refinancing makes sense, why shortening your mortgage term can accelerate your path to becoming debt free, and the important difference between a no-cost refinance and a no-cash refinance. We also explain how escrow accounts work, when paying mortgage points may be worthwhile, and why shopping multiple lenders can save thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. We also cover common misconceptions about credit scores, why focusing only on your monthly payment can lead to expensive mistakes, and the biggest refinancing opportunity many homeowners miss when interest rates decline. The goal isn't simply to lower your payment. It's to reduce the total cost of borrowing while making decisions that fit your long-term financial plan. Understanding the math behind refinancing can help you avoid costly mistakes and keep more of your money working toward your financial independence. We know finances can be complicated, especially when you are just beginning your journey to financial literacy. When you listen to the Financial Boot Camp Podcast, you'll learn the basics of money: how to earn more of it, how to save more of it, how and why to invest more of it, and yes, how to safely spend more of it.
