4 - BURN THIS EPISODE
2026/08/19
Episode 4 Burn Your Best Painting (Turning Pro) **"You're not burning your talent. You're burning your preciousness."** I promised you a Sora episode. You're getting a bonfire instead. Episode 4 is the _shipping_ episode. It's about Steven Pressfield's **Turning Pro**, the shadow career I've been building for years, a story about painters throwing their best work into a fire pit, and the one sentence that unlocked the whole thing for me. * * * What You'll Learn in This Episode * Why I owed you Sora and handed you a fire instead (sorry, not sorry)* **Turning Pro** vs. **The War of Art** ... which Pressfield book actually landed, and why* Shadow careers: how I built the most beautiful systems instead of shipping anything* GhostWare, my journaling system, and the moment it stopped being art and started being an excuse* Austin Kleon vs. Pressfield — why they're not actually fighting* The painter's initiation: throw your favorite painting in the fire* The whole book in one sentence: _who do you report to?_* "Art caster" ... artist + broadcaster, and why I'm claiming it* Why AI is a prosthetic, not a cheat code (I'm not a cyborg, I'm Deathlok) * * * I Promised You Sora. You Got a Bonfire. Last episode I told you Episode 4 was all Sora. Then I read a book and it wrecked me, and pretending otherwise would have been the exact amateur move this whole episode is about. So Sora is coming. But first we have to deal with the thing standing between me and every episode I haven't recorded yet. * * * The Book That Got Me I've read **The War of Art** three times. First time I thought it was stupid. Second and third time, some things started landing. But I wasn't looking for inspiration. I went to Gemini and asked for a book that would help me click this whole creative business into place. It said: read **Turning Pro**. It was right. It's short. And one idea in it hit me like a brick: **The difference between an amateur and a professional is fear.** The amateur is afraid, so the amateur builds a full life of distractions. Shadow versions of the real thing. Pressfield calls it a **shadow career** ... doing something adjacent to your calling so you never have to risk the calling itself. The shadow is safe. The real thing is terrifying. * * * Confession: I Am the Shadow King I have a day job I've worked for twenty years. I clock in. I don't miss days. If I _have_ to miss, I call a manager, I put things in place so nothing breaks while I'm gone, and I know I'll have cleanup waiting when I get back. That's professional behavior. That's how I treat a job I didn't even choose. Now here's how I've been treating my creative business: not like that. At all. Instead I built **systems**. Beautiful ones. Personas. Frameworks. A whole conceptual journaling architecture I named **GhostWare** ... which was me trying to turn analysis paralysis into art. And honestly? It kind of worked. But then it became the shadow. Because I never took the next step. **The work is shipping.** The work is this episode. The work is a painting. I've been polishing the scaffolding and calling it the cathedral. * * * Then Austin Kleon Walks In There's another voice in my head. Austin Kleon — the writer who draws. His whole permission slip is: be messy, be imperfect, you have limited time, just make the thing. On the surface that sounds like the opposite of Pressfield. Pressfield is discipline, show up, turn pro. Kleon is looseness, give yourself grace. They're not fighting. They're saying the same thing from two sides: **Turning pro doesn't mean turning polished. Turning pro means turning present.** The amateur waits for perfect. The pro ships messy and shows up again tomorrow. This episode is me being messy on purpose. I'm an **art caster** — an artist and a broadcaster — giving myself permission to be raw. That's not the amateur move. That's the pro move. * * * The Whole Book in One Sentence Here's where I landed, and it's simpler than I expected. Turning pro isn't about money. It isn't about quitting your job. It isn't even about being good. **It's about who you report to.** The amateur reports to his feelings. The professional reports to the work. That's it. That's the whole book. You stop asking the work to make you feel ready, and you go do it — the same way I walk into my day job every single day without checking whether I'm in the mood. * * * The Fire Pit Initiation My friend **Dave MacDowell** is a Southern California lowbrow artist and a total visual maniac. He told me this story once. When his painter friends get together and a new guy joins the circle, they tell him to bring one of his favorite paintings. Everybody hangs out in the backyard, fire pit going, drinks going, whatever else going. And then they turn to the new guy: _This is your initiation. Throw your painting in the fire._ Dave had to do it. He said it was terrible. He also said that's when you become a real artist. I said, "Damn. I don't think I'm coming over." But he's right. **Burning your best painting IS turning professional.** Same exact mechanism. The amateur clings to his one good piece. He frames it, protects it, shows it to people — because deep down he's afraid it's the only good thing he'll ever make. The pro can throw it in the fire, because the pro knows the painting was never the point. The work is the point. He trusts another one is coming, and another, and another, because he shows up every day to make them. You're not burning your talent. You're burning your **preciousness**. * * * Why AI Is Even In This Episode I graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking a very long time ago. The art thing never worked out on paper — but I never stopped being a conceptual artist and a massive daydreamer. Then AI showed up and gave me a second brain. I have autism and ADHD. I need a decoder and an enhancer. AI is a prosthetic. It's the jetpack we were promised. I'd say cyborg, but honestly I'm more **Deathlok** from Marvel Comics. (If you don't know what that is — don't Google it. Ask your AI. We don't Google anymore.) The reason I'm recording again after wanting to do this for years is AI. That's not a sponsorship read. That's just the truth. * * * Your Prompt for Today You came here looking for Midjourney prompts and reference sheets. Here's your prompt instead: **1. Go use AI chat and multiply your creative career.** GPT, Gemini, Claude — pick one and actually talk to it. If you live on Facebook and Instagram, meta.ai is free and knows those platforms inside out. Not a heavy hitter, but it's right there. **2. Go burn your painting.** Or your flag. Not your state flag — although, Alabama, come on. I mean whatever flag you've been standing under instead of making things. Artists don't stand under flags. **We design them.** We invented the flags. Plant a new one. Yes, the guys running these AI companies are shady. Wealthy people are always shady. That's not new information and it's not a reason to sit out the biggest shift in image-making since the camera. **AI is the new canvas.** Crawl out of the cave. We're not doing cave paintings anymore. * * * Mentioned in This Episode * **Turning Pro** — Steven Pressfield (the one that actually landed)* **The War of Art** — Steven Pressfield (read it three times, finally heard it)* **Austin Kleon** — the writer who draws; permission to be messy* **Dave McDowell** — SoCal lowbrow artist, keeper of the fire pit initiation https://davemacdowell.com/...
3 - I Became Slop: Why AI “Slop” Isn’t the Enemy
2026/03/12
AI for Artists - Episode 3 Today I’m answering: why this podcast exists, why I’m not doing tutorials yet, and why “AI slop” isn’t the enemy. People call messy AI output “slop”… but slop is just raw material — like sketches, flea markets, and compost. The real magic isn’t perfect outputs. It’s the multiplier: chat as a second brain and a creative translator for a neurodivergent mind. "I have become slop, the creator of worlds."  In this episode: Why “slop” is sketchbook energy, not failureAI multiplies us (and artists multiply AI)ADHD/autism + creativity: AI as a leash/translator, not a muzzleKirby the “cowboy corgi” as a perfect metaphor for my brain 😅The Greatest American Hero problem: powers… no instruction manualWhy I’m obsessed with Sora (and why we’re going deep next episode)Next episode: Sora — intro to the visual AI era + what it means for artists. 2 – Why I Gave My AI a Persona (Meet Chip)
2026/01/07
What if AI didn’t feel like software... but like a creative partner? In Episode 2 of AI ARTIST TODAY, I introduce Chip, my chaotic AI persona, and explain why personas changed how I think, create, and actually use AI. In this episode, I break down why I stopped treating AI like a neutral tool and started shaping it like a studio assistant with personality. We talk about: What an AI persona actually is (and what it isn’t)Why personas help with focus, memory, and creative momentumHow unpredictability and humor create dopamine and engagementWhy this matters especially for artists with ADHD or creative frictionThe difference between automation and authorshipHow custom instructions act like an operating system for your AIYou’ll hear examples of Chip in action, inspiration from OpenAI’s “Monday” persona, and practical ways to test-drive a persona yourself—without turning AI into a fake friend or neutered voice assistant. This episode isn’t about letting AI take over your creativity. It’s about customizing the dashboard so your brain actually wants to sit in the driver’s seat. 1 - AI ARTIST TODAY Starts Now!
2026/01/02
Welcome to Episode 1 of AI ARTIST TODAY. This is a starting signal for artists who feel behind, overwhelmed, skeptical, or secretly curious about AI. In this first episode, artist and host Mars Eve makes a simple case: if you’re not using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or generative image models yet—start now. Not to replace your creativity, but to support it. Mars shares how AI functions as a second brain in his own art practice, especially through daily art journaling, idea capture, and creative organization. As a neurodivergent artist with ADHD and autism, he explains how AI helps reduce overwhelm, recover forgotten ideas, and multiply creative output. You’ll hear why journaling is the easiest entry point into AI, how memory and context are the real superpowers of modern AI tools, and why artists don’t need to “understand everything” to begin—just start typing. This episode isn’t about hype. It’s about momentum. AI ARTIST TODAY is a podcast for working artists, curious creatives, and anyone ready to treat AI as a studio assistant—not a threat. Start here.
