Roadless Rule, Trail Stewardship, and Ultrarunning Soundtracks (Reflection 4 | Bonus Smiles S2E12)
2026/09/12
Against the backdrop of the August 18th proposal to rescind the Roadless Rule, we’re looking through the lens of the Runners for Public Lands episode for this reflection. As George Plomarity says, “There is no such thing as a trail running industry without public land access. It’s the foundation that everyone is building off of. You can’t have climbing, you can’t have mountain biking, you can’t have trail running if we don’t have this shared resource that we all get to access.” And it’s all outdoor recreation people who are potentially adversely affected by this proposal. We also hear from Bryant Baker and Kat Baker of Runners for Public Lands, alongside Mammoth Trailfest and the Mammoth 200 RD, Tim Tollefson as well as Griselda Garcia of Santa Mujeres Run Club and RPL ambassador. We also look at the distinct music strategies from Joe, Jason, and Vicki.  Featured Guests:  Vicki Allen - personal trainer, coach, ultrarunner Jason Bahamundi – coach, endurance athlete, founder Joe Hardin – ultrarunner, host of Beyond the Finish Line Tim Tollefson – founder, mammoth trailfest, professional runner  Griselda Garcia – long-time educator, baker, reader, and runner, ambassador for Runners for Public Lands Clare Gallagher – ultrarunner, ecologist, writer, future PhD George Plomarity – tireless advocate for public land access, environmental awareness, run culture Kat Baker – Executive Director, Runners for Public Lands Bryan Baker – Director of Advocacy & Education, Runners for Public Lands Resources & Featured Links Runners for Public Lands: Learn About the Roadless Rule Outdoor Alliance Members: Outdoor Alliance Coalition Episode Playlist: Listen Here Gear & Lighting: Vests and Waist Lights  Connect with Us: Podcast: Listen to Bonus Smiles Broadcast: Listen to the radio show Playlists: Human Curated Bonus Smiles Jams
Lone Star Trail FKT & Music as an Aid Station (Vicki Allen | Bonus Smiles S2E11)
2026/09/06
Vicki Allen is an ultrarunner who’s after the fast known time, or FKT on the Lone Star Trail just north of Houston. This 96 mile traverse is the longest continuous trail in Texas. But for Vicki this wasn't a one way adventure–it was a 192 mile out and back.  Unlike other 200 milers such as Tahoe, Bigfoot, Moab, or Cocodona, it’s not hundreds who toe the line on raceday–this year 25 souls lined up for the point to point race. And outside of some water stations, the rest is up to you!  Vicki shares sonic strategies that keep her moving forward and entertained when headphones greet you with an unexpected low battery message. OG Cocodona, Everyday Athlete, Running Music | Jason Bahamundi (Bonus Smiles S2E10)
2026/08/23
The mythos of ultrarunning as shrouded in social media narratives, simultaneously inspires and robs you of joy. Against the backdrop of effortless miles, continuous progress over time, and a calendar full of races everyday athletes and their stories of struggle and success get buried in the algorithm. In this episode of Bonus Smiles, we sit down with Jason Bahamundi, founder of Run Tri Bike and the Everyday Athlete Podcast Network, to understand what it means to be "people who run," and not "runners who people." Jason shares stories from his adventures in the inaugural Cocodona 250, how he talks the talk and walks the walk of being an everyday athlete, and how running re-entered his running life. Bonus Smiles S2E7: Runners for Public Lands Special
2026/08/01
How can the trail running community shift from extractive to additive models when it comes to our public lands? In this special episode of Bonus Smiles, we spotlight an inspiring panel discussion hosted by Runners for Public Lands (RPL) at TrailCon. Speakers from the panel highlight how the trail running community can better show up for public lands–as individual runners, what races and race directors can do, and how brands can support initiatives across the sport and industry.  Whether you're a casual trail runner, an ultra marathoner, or a public radio supporter, discover how finding a deeper connection with your local trails can help shape a sustainable future for outdoor recreation. Thanks to Runners for Public Lands, the panelists, and TrailCon! Welcome to the first reflection episode of season 2 ! We look back on the UltrAspire mini-series as well as the episodes of this season. We explore the different ways our guests use music as well as what keeps them going--whether that's on a training run or toeing the line on race day. While it may seem counterintuitive, most of the time, it's not about the running! Thanks to our guests! Jeff Browning, Lindsay Teague, Ricky Urias, Kilian Korth, Nate Clifton, Anna Simonsson-Søndenå, Julian Blevins, Romy Ancona, Katie Asmuth, and Jeff Cady! Bonus Smiles S2E5: Jeff Cady
2026/07/13
Jeff Cady isn’t a stranger to running or to exploring the beauty of the backcountry. While others were learning how to make sourdough in their kitchens, he was traversing the Snowqualmie section of the PCT in Washington State. From hiking to fast packing, it's no surprise that his adventures would continue into the world of ultramarathons. In fact, this Halloween at the Javelina Jundred race, his eyes are on his first 100 mile buckle.   Tune in to learn how Jeff found his way into ultras and the music that powers his runs! Bonus Smiles S2E4: TrailCon Special
2026/06/28
This special episode seizes the kairotic  moment between two races–Broken Arrow and Western States. We’re keeping the vibes high and showcasing what public radio music is about–human curated jams you won’t find on commercial stations and that can’t be replicated by algorithms.     We’re coming to you fresh from TrailCon–the conference that brings together pro athletes, brands, and every day runners in the Olympic Village at the Palisades Tahoe Resort. We asked our guests one question: What would your walk up  song be for a race?
Bonus Smiles S2E3: Blevolution (Julian Blevins)
2026/06/15
Blevolutions’ feet have been around the globe from New York to Japan, but running has been a glue between his extensive travel experience and his love of music. A diverse collection of jams have fueled many of his ultras. Through the ups of meeting trail royalty to the downs of when nature calls.but not in way you’re thinking…Actual nature and wildlife!   Up first, a dive into what shaped his love and interest in music!
Bonus Smiles S2E2: Anna Simonsson-Søndenå
2026/06/08
You may know Anna from her 165km (or about 100 mile) journey around Lofoten, the Norwegian archipelago. In this episode, she shares how sensitivity is thread through music, running, and pain. For instance, that boredom is a kind of pain. Or while music can be a powerful running tool, it’s also important “to be present in it.” Up first, a look into where Anna’s music philosophy started.
Bonus Smiles S2E1: Nate Clifton
2026/05/25
Welcome to Bonus Smiles! A music and interview show that’s fueled by runners and their playlists! I’m Public Radio Runner. In this episode, Yuma local Nate Clifton, shares his stories, jams, and some nutrition advice. He also walks us through his perspective that ultrarunning isn’t so much a sport about the miles as it is a sport of self-discovery.  He also shares a strategy that works both in the kitchen and on the trails. Up first, what it means to be a master ultrarunner in a demographic of mostly 20 and 30-somethings.
Trailer
2026/05/19
Bonus Smiles is a narrative music show about the shared miles and stories on trail, from Cocodona to local runs, fueled by runners and their playlists. Public Radio Runner is the veteran trash panda who calls the dumpster behind his local public radio station home. He loves snacks, running distances people hate driving, and above all the communities that comprise the trail, ultra, and public radio worlds. Because the friend, family member, or rando cheering you on at a mile 77 aid station is the same kind of person who supports local public radio. They both care about community when it hurts. Bonus Smiles UltrAspire Mini Series E4: Kilian Korth
2026/04/27
Welcome to Bonus Smiles! A music and interview show that’s fueled by runners and their playlists! I’m Public Radio Runner. You may know him by his 2025 Triple Crown win. But in this episode, ultrarunner Kilian Korth shares how music ties into his running! Like his strategy to save music for when you need it. Or his epiphany that came during the Moab 240 race while listening to the HUNTR/X song Golden.  But the path to making it isn't always paved in success. Up first, a look into the philosophy behind the No Limits and Run Tough Mindset.
Bonus Smiles UltrAspire Mini Series E3: Rage Rhino (Ricky Urias)
2026/04/20
Welcome to Bonus Smiles! A music and interview show that’s fueled by runners and their playlists! I’m Public Radio Runner. Ricky doesn’t usually listen to music when he runs–preferring to do everything with an intention and purpose. So why is his daughter’s message of encouragement and song recommendation so meaningful to him? To appreciate it, we have to understand who Ricky is– and the support team who showed up for him–from his first 100 miler to his 250 mile finish in Heritage Square in downtown Flagstaff.  Up first, Ricky’s relationship with running. Stay with us!
