Wrapping up 2026 with our 'alternative awards'
2026/10/21
For the final time this year, it's time for your weekly dose of Warrington Wolves chat. To wrap up the first season of "The Wire Untangled," hosts Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning have some awards to give out as they take a final look back through the good and the bad of Warrington Wolves' 2026 season. Certain players get their flowers while we also highlight some of the most and least memorable outings of the season just passed, finishing with our three-word summary of 2026. We'd like to thank all of our listeners for lending us their ears throughout the year - we'll be back bigger and better in 2027!
A comprehensive 2026 season review
2026/10/14
Warrington Wolves' campaign may now be over - but we're not quite finished just yet! We have two more episodes of our dedicated Wire podcast for you to round out our first season, starting with this comprehensive review of what we saw from the team in 2026. Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning take a look back over eight months of twists, turns, highs and lows which ended with Sam Burgess' side falling just short of the ultimate glory of winning the Super League Grand Final. Before that, Warrington had undergone an impressive resurgence to go from an eighth-place finish in 2025 to third this time around, with a staggering home record of 16 wins from 17 matches in all competitions being the foundation of their efforts. We look at where we feel Warrington are heading into the off-season and assess the changes we feel they still need to make before the 2027 campaign begins. Then next week, we will bring you our season finale as we hand our our "alternative awards" for 2026.
Unpacking more Grand Final heartbreak for Wire
2026/10/07
As the dust settles on yet another Grand Final defeat for Warrington Wolves, it's time to unpack where things went wrong at Old Trafford. Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning take one final look at the defeat to Wakefield Trinity as well as looking at some of the fallout from it, with sections of the fanbase expressing their anger and frustration. While plenty of it was justified, did some of it go too far? Warrington found themselves 19-0 down at the break following a nightmare first half as they conceded the biggest half-time deficit in a Grand Final since 2001. When it became clear that Plan A was not working, why was Plan B not enacted sooner? We also ask whether or not Warrington need to look deeper into why the team has once again failed to perform in a final. The chaps then discuss England's squad for the Rugby League World Cup, which was announced on Monday with three Wire players included - but was another unfortunate not to get a seat on the plane to Australia? All of that and more on this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated Warrington Wolves podcast
Immortality beckons...Grand Final preview special
2026/09/30
It's Grand Final week and for the fifth time in the Super League era, Warrington Wolves stand on the brink of history. Is this the time for them to finally end a wait for a league title that stretches all the way back to 1955? Among other things, this week's very special episode of "The Wire Untangled" sees Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning explain what a Wire win at Old Trafford on Saturday would mean to them. But amid all of the emotion attached, there is still a game to play and the chaps assess just how Warrington can go about getting the job done against an impressive Wakefield Trinity side who beat them only a month ago. What lessons have they learned from that game, and others in the last few weeks? We pick out the key area in which Wire simply must step up if they are to be the ones making history on Saturday evening. All of that and more on this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated weekly Warrington Wolves podcast
It all comes down to this...
2026/09/16
The regular season is done and now, it's time for the play-offs! Thankfully, there is no early holiday for our Warrington Wolves team this year with The Wire back in the mix, and this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" looks ahead to what will hopefully be a long post-season campaign. Matt Turner and Gareth Dunning take a look ahead to Saturday's huge eliminator tie against Hull KR, whom Warrington have beaten home and away in Super League this year. However, the Robins have also ended Wire's participation in the last two Challenge Cups and their last two sets of Super League play-offs - can they put those wrongs right? Head coach Sam Burgess has a refreshed squad to choose from boosted by several returnees from injury - can he find a role for players like Cai Taylor-Wray and, perhaps more pertinently, Leon Hayes? We also touch on how a youthful Warrington team ended the regular season by impressively beating Toulouse Olympique and there is big praise for Ben Currie after the loose forward won the club's Player of the Year award before being named in the Super League Dream Team. With George Williams moving on at the end of the year, is Currie the stand-out candidate to be Warrington's next captain? All of that and more on this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated weekly Warrington Wolves podcast.
Matt and Gareth pick their Super League Dream Teams
2026/09/09
It's time for your weekly dose of Warrington Wolves chat. It's Matt Turner and Gareth Dunning holding the fort this week in the aftermath of The Wire's six-match winning run being brought to an end by another play-off bound side in Wakefield Trinity. We ask what the key lessons for Sam Burgess' side to take from the game were as well as picking out the things they were doing well before falling away in the second half and asking whether another final-quarter drop-off is a cause for concern. It means Warrington still have a job to do in order to fully secure third place which could complicate Burgess' team selection - does he go full-strength against Toulouse Olympique, or does he rest his star names in preparation for the eliminator round? Finally, it's getting towards awards season with the Super League Dream Team set to be revealed later this week - will there be any Wire players involved? And if not, is that such a surprise? On that front, Matt and Gareth both reveal who they would pick in their Dream Team for the 2026 season. All of that and more on this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated Warrington Wolves podcast
Wakefield Trinity 25 Warrington Wolves 18 - The Debrief
2026/09/06
Our Warrington Wolves reporter Matt Turner looks back at The Wire's 25-18 defeat at Wakefield Trinity
Is it now time to rest the troops?
2026/09/02
Your weekly dose of Warrington Wolves chat is back! Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning review The Wire's victory at Hull FC in which they secured home advantage in the eliminator round - did Sam Burgess' side show the kind of signs needed for a deep play-off run? We discuss THAT Ligi Sao incident - or should that be THOSE Ligi Sao incidents - for which the Hull forward not only escaped a red card but also any sort of charge from the Match Review Panel. Does this sum up the problem many have with the entire officiating process in a nutshell? Finally, a look ahead to this weekend's trip to Wakefield Trinity - a game that had been looking pivotal until recently but with a third-place finish now highly likely, is it time for Burgess to ring the changes? All of that and more discussed in Episode 28 of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's weekly podcast dedicated to all things Warrington Wolves
The selection question and the curious case of Cai Taylor-Wray
2026/08/26
It's time for Episode 27 of our weekly Warrington Wolves podcast. Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning regather to go back over The Wire's win over Huddersfield Giants - and Gareth makes a big declaration about how important he feels the result actually was... It did allow Wire to secure their play-off place, with a home eliminator tie next on the tick list - they are in a strong position for that while they retain a faint hope of gatecrashing the top two. With that in mind, we discuss how Sam Burgess may approach team selection given the need to keep players as fresh as possible given their gruelling recent run. We also talk about Toff Sipley's season-ending injury - the only real blot on an otherwise perfect fortnight for Warrington - and ask how big a loss the New Zealander is for the crunch games, while we also ask whether or not Cai Taylor-Wray has a part to play in what remains of 2026. Attention then turns to Saturday's trip to Hull FC and with future Black and Whites coach Steve McNamara getting a live view of his future charges from the Warrington coaching bench, do they have to be ready for a more motivated home side? All of that and more in this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated Warrington Wolves podcast.
Warrington Wolves 34 Huddersfield Giants 24 - The Debrief
2026/08/23
Our Warrington Wolves reporter Matt Turner gives his take on The Wire's 34-24 victory over Huddersfield Giants that sealed their spot in the Super League play-offs
A statement made but a big banana skin ahead
2026/08/19
Later than usual to account for the midweek trip to Hull KR, your weekly dose of Warrington Wolves chat is back! Matt Turner is straight off the motorway and straight into the studio to join Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning to dissect a superb result and performance from The Wire. We ask where the victory at Craven Park ranks among the best of Sam Burgess' era and what doors it could open up for the remainder of the season. The chaps also discuss captain George Williams' impressive return to the team from injury, the performance of Wire's starting middle and whether or not Ewan Irwin is a 'bolter' for England's World Cup squad. Attention then turns to Huddersfield Giants' visit to The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday as Warrington bid to avoid an "after the Lord Mayor's Show" display against an in-form Giants side that has won its last four games. Will the Round 24 game go to form? Or is this a big banana skin for Burgess' boys? All of that and more discussed in Episode 26 of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated Warrington Wolves podcast.

Recruitment, dream locations and squad management
2026/08/12
Your weekly dose of Warrington Wolves chat is back for another week! Matt Turner and Gareth Dunning pick their way through a busy week at The Halliwell Jones Stadium either side of Saturday's win at Bradford Bulls, which has included two exciting announcements for 2027. The chaps discuss the signings of props Toby Crosby and Mitchell Prest and with the clash with Wigan in Dublin now officially in the calendar, they discuss their dream locations for watching a Wire match. In the present day, Warrington are approaching a busy week with a Thursday-night clash with York Knights followed quickly by Tuesday's rearranged trip to Hull KR. The lads put themselves in Sam Burgess' shoes to say how they would manage the squad through this run of three games in 10 days to keep themselves in the hunt for the upper placings in Super League. All of that and more in Episode 25 of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated weekly Warrington Wolves podcast

Lift off for Toff and assessing the top-six picture
2026/08/05
Our Warrington Wolves podcast is back from its summer break! Matt Turner, Mike Parsons and Gareth Dunning regroup to discuss The Wire's progression towards sealing a Super League play-off spot - but where can they actually finish? With Saturday's win at Castleford Tigers having kicked off a run of fixtures that are deemed more presentable in some quarters, we also discuss whether or not that actually does Sam Burgess' men any good when it comes to the questions that hang over them. A highlight of recent matches has been the return to fitness and form of overseas prop Toff Sipley - are we finally starting to see what Warrington signed him for? And how key is his bench partnership with Joe Philbin? As Wire prepare to head to Bradford Bulls this weekend, could there be changes made to the team? With squad management paramount over the coming weeks, we pick out a few players who look like they could do with a rest. All of that and more in this week's episode of "The Wire Untangled" - the Warrington Guardian's dedicated Warrington Wolves podcast.
